Buhari averted bloodbath, says Abia governor

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu said yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to agree to withdraw soldiers from Umuahia’s streets averted a bloodbath.

The governor also hailed the President for the confidence reposed in the South East governors to handle the issues concerning the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The governor said that the near bloodbath which was avoided, “would have set back all we have done in the past two years in projecting the made in Aba products which will boost the revenue base of the state”.

He spoke during a visit to the Abia State Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ)secretariat to sympathise with journalists over the invasion of the secretariat by some soldiers last week.

Ikpeazu described the Igbo as the only group of people that showed true reconciliation after the civil war having found their way to all parts of the country and living peacefully with others.

Ambode: Lagos to get first woman governor soon

•One-day governor, deputy get scholarship, N1m each

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has expressed optimism that the state will soon produce its first woman governor.

The governor spoke yesterday when he hosted the One-Day Governor, Miss Zuffon Bukola, with members of her State Executive Council (Exco) at the Exco Chambers of Lagos House in Ikeja, the state capital.

He said the victory of Miss Zuffon, and her deputy, Miss Rosemary Ogidan, was a signpost of what the future holds for the state.

Miss Zuffon, a 16-year-old Senior Secondary School (SSS) II pupil of Awodiora Senior Secondary School at Ajegunle became the One-Day Governor after she won a keenly contested Spelling Bee competition in June.

Miss Ogidan, also an SSS II pupil of Methodist Senior High School at Badagry, was the runner-up.

Ambode said the victory of two girls as one-day governor and deputy governor showed that a woman could be elected governor of the state.

He said: “This is a significant day for Lagos State. It also signals what the future holds for the state. We have seated here two females, who are strong members of the new State Executive Council. We have a female governor and a female deputy governor.

“This is also telling us a story about what the future of Lagos is all about: that one day, we would find seated here, not just a day governor, but for a period or tenure of four years, there would be a female governor in this state.

“We’ve had female deputy governors in this state. It also says something that these younger ones are telling our women in Lagos to rise up and take their position.”

The governor hailed Miss Zuffon and her Exco members, saying their feat was an indication that the funds the state government spent on improving the Educational sector were not wasted.

He assured all that his administration would further develop the sector.

Ambode said: “I want to congratulate her and her Exco members for also showing to us that the future of education in Lagos is strong. We believe that the resources we are spending in the Educational sector are not going to be waste. They have also shown that they are ready to succeed us as long as we encourage them.

“So, we’ll do everything, as what we have been doing in the last two years, to continue to pay greater attention to education and make sure we do so much in youth development to allow them become mentally capable of succeeding us, even as we move away from all the things we have done in the public service.”

The governor awarded full scholarship to Miss Zuffon and Miss Ogidan.

He also announced a cash gift of N1 million to each of them.

Ambode donated N500,000 to each member of the One-Day Governor’s Exco, consisting of Master Tovishede Ayobami (Secretary to the State Government); Master Philip Daniel (Speaker of the House of Assembly); Master Durojaiye Oluwasegun (Commissioner for Education); Master Atabo Ufedojo (Commissioner for Science and Technology).

Miss Zuffon hailed the governor for his visionary leadership and achievements, especially in the Educational sector.

She noted that despite the economic challenges, teachers’ salaries and entitlements were paid as when due.

The aspiring lawyer requested for a school bus, the renovation of the multipurpose hall as well as the construction of drainage channels in her school.

    Ambode granted her requests.

Lawmaker hails Lagos Governor on renovation of schools

Chairman, Committee on Education of the Lagos State House of Assembly Olanrewaju Ogunyemi has praised Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the on-going renovation of schools and his achievements in the education sector in the state.

Ogunyemi spoke yesterday during a tour by his committee of some of the renovated public schools in the state.

The lawmaker said the committee members were impressed with the renovation and rehabilitation they saw.

Schools visited by the committee included Model College, Meiran, Millennium Junior and Senior Secondary School, Egbeda, Estate Junior High School, Ifako/Ijaiye, and Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School, Agege.

He said: “This government must be commended for their efforts. The governor has really done so much in the last two years, particularly in overhauling infrastructure in the education sector. I have seen schools that have been renovated and I give kudos to the governor because he has done very well.

“What we have seen so far shows that there is so much hope for education in the state and I would say that the state of complete dilapidation of infrastructure in the schools has been turned around.

“I must commend the governor and state the Ministry of Education ably led by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Oluranti Adebule for a job well done, and for monitoring the contractors to deliver a good job.”

Ogunyemi also had kind words for the Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa-led state House of Assembly “for ensuring that the executive is closely monitored, for appropriating funds, for following up and monitoring to make sure that the fund expended is put to good use.”

On the renovation work done at the Model College, Meiran, Ogunyemi said: “We visited the school over one year ago and we complained about the state of facilities there. The hostel accommodation, the toilets, the classrooms, the water system have improved.

“The House of Assembly is happy that our governor is working and that the Ministry of Education is responsive to the observation of the House.

“I think on the whole, we are pleased that our oversight function is yielding the desired results. We came and we spoke, while the government has responded.”

The politician, who promised that the committee would pay regular assessment visits to the renovated schools, called for more support for the state government.

  • APC to governor: be honest for once

APC to governor: be honest for once

Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Governor Nyesom Wike of being economical with the truth.

The APC, yesterday in Port Harcourt, through its Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, accused Wike of lying during the thanksgiving service in honour of Senator George Sekibo, at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Port Harcourt, when he alleged that APC’s poor governance model is destroying national institutions.

APC said: “The assertion today (yesterday) by Wike that APC has destroyed institutions in Nigeria is manifestly false. Nigerians know between APC and PDP, the party that finished the nation’s institutions and brought us to this sorry pass.

“There is no evidence the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the police are collaborating to favour APC, as the PDP, INEC and security agencies collaborated with Wike and Gesila Khan (INEC’s former Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers, who is still on trial for alleged corruption) by handing over the electoral process to Wike and PDP in 2015. Wike is merely being haunted by his past and his shadows. Let him (Rivers governor) sort himself out and leave APC alone.

“The verdicts handed down last week by the Appeal Courts on the December 10, 2016, rerun elections in Rivers State cannot be politicised by Wike, as a means of shoring up morale among his party members. He should spare the judiciary his needless scathing criticisms. Rivers people and Nigerians are fed up with the Rivers governor’s antics of praising the judiciary when judgments favour his interest and lampooning the judiciary, if otherwise.

“The APC has taken notice of his (Wike’s) subtle threat of violence in 2019. We can only remind him that 2019 will not be 2015. Never. A word is enough for the wise.”

The party earlier described Thursday’s loss at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, by Sekibo to Chief Andrew Uchendu in Rivers East, and Olaka Worgu, also of PDP (defeated by Senator Magnus Abe of Rivers South East), as notice to PDP and Wike to start planning to vacate Government House, next year.

  • ‘Ekiti deserves competent governor’

    ‘Ekiti deserves competent governor’

Isola Fapohunda, a lawyer, is a governorship aspirant in Ekiti State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He spoke with Emmanuel Oladesu and Musa Odoshimokhe on his ambition and how  the party can win next year’s governorship election.

How prepared is the APC for the governorship of Ekiti State?

The party is very prepared because we have precedent to go by. For instance, the Ondo State primary was rancour free and whatever rancour that came up was well managed. We went into the governorship election in Ondo State without any of the parties not supporting the purpose for the election. Let me be sincere, I think I know what is of concerned to the people. The number of the aspirants that are actually coming up for the election which is close to 40 or 50 depending on who you talk to. But, going by the Ondo election which equally has many aspirants and when it came to the issue of picking the ticket, we had only 24 of them actually contesting the primary. We have lot of people crossing over from the PDP to the APC, so whatever the case, I believe we have the machinery that can handle whatever comes up after the primary.

Who are contenders and pretenders in the race?

We have people that are elderly contesting; I don’t think it will be fair to point to any group as pretenders or contenders in the race. The name that you want to believe is formidable might not even pick up the nomination form, so what do you say to that? It all depends on what you are doing, if you have a good grounding, if you understand the politics of the state, the right people behind you, then maybe you can actually become the choice and the flag bearer of the party. But to say this group are pretenders or contenders is left to the party to iron out.

How can the activities of the aspirants be managed without unnecessarily rupturing the unity of the party?

As long as the party will provide an enabling environment and a level playing field for all, there will not be problems that cannot be managed within the set machinery of the party and before the governorship election in 2018. If you lose an election, let it be. Move on. As long as the party does not favour one aspirant over another, there won’t be problems. The party itself is a success, it is well grounded; the APC has years of history behind them. I don’t think managing the process of election will be a problem. It has just passed through the same process in Ondo State which it successfully managed.

Is zoning likely going to be an issue in the election?

I don’t think it is as serious as people are taking it now. You need to look at what are the issues in the state. Ekiti is about the only homogeneous state in the country, every man in Ekiti is an Ekiti man, name it, from Efon Alaiye, Okemisi Ekiti, Ikere Ekiti,or Ado Ekiti we are all Ekiti people. The elections that we had previously, some of these aspirants if not all that I know from the South Senatorial District have participated, when the chips are down, we are brothers. So, I have to really choose my words carefully. People have always contested in Ekiti State and I make bold to say that, those who are propagating the Southern agenda are political mischief makers. Senator Adeniyi from Ikere only recently declared his support publicly for Chief Segun Oni. He is actually represented the South in the last senate. What does that tell you?

As far as we know, election process in the state had come far. So, leave it on a level playing ground for everybody to play. So, if you win an election you take the glory, if you don’t win you prepare for another time and present yourself again. It is smacks of political laziness, when you want to ride on the back of a horse that will not get up, and enter through a back door. This is a state that prides itself as the Fountain of Knowledge. There are people looking in that direction. I am from the Central, I can tell you that my people will also prefer the Central agenda as well, there is also the Ado Agenda, and what about the northern zone as well. His Excellency Dr. Kayode Fayemi and His Excellency Segun Oni are both from the north senatorial district; Chief Oni has declared his intension to again contest the election to be governor. I can tell you on all authorities there is nothing like zonal arrangement. What people are talking about is that since no one from that Southern Senatorial District has presented himself for the governor, they are campaigning to drum support for the district. So, not even the constitution of Nigeria stipulates zoning as a criteria for being governor, in the constitution there is nothing like zoning. So, what they should be doing is to go into the race and see whether you can win it or not.

How confident is the APC that it will displace the PDP from power?

When you are a ruling party, people have the opportunity to assess your performance. Now people are assessing this current government whether they deserve a pass mark or not. Go to the streets of Ekiti and find out. But, being in the opposition over the last four years, and you know the rancour that came from the winning formula of this current administration, the mood and sentiments of the people in Ekiti State now is that Ekiti State needs new narrative completely.

Where do we go from here. This is a state that has been heavily endowed. Ekiti is not a state for a candidate that will hold it down in penury perpetually. And people are waking up now, majority of the voters that you have in Ekiti now are children that were born a few years back. They are actually attaining voting age now, they are very erudite, cosmopolitan and more intelligent. These are not people you can buy with cups of rice, and frivolous political promises. These are voters who are actually sitting down to ask questions that will actually jolt you from your unintelligent slumber. They ask questions like what have you got to change the lots of this state? And I think right now what the ruling party in Ekiti State has not really woken up to is the fact that the younger electorates, as well as the older ones have the golden opportunity to actually mingle with aspirants. They are singing about the change that they expect to occur in the state. They are asking not just for generational change for the sake of it, but an intelligent one at that. I think for that, we are very well prepared.

A couple of days ago, a chieftain of the PDP in Ekiti State, Senator Ayo Arise made a very bold claim that if the APC in Ekiti State gets its candidate right, that the APC will win the governorship election in 2018. Now, that was coming from a PDP chieftain who is on the ground and knows the current moods and sentiments of the people of the State for a whole new change completely away from the experience of the past. I want to say that if the candidate of the APC is able to manage this position, the APC will win and be the next governor of Ekiti State, I say that authoritatively too.

There were divisions during the Ondo APC primary. Even, up till now, the case is still in court. What are you fears in this case?

For the sake of not repeating what I have said, we are hoping and praying that the APC will create an enabling environment because something phenomenal is going to happen in Ekiti State in 2018. We have mentioned the immediate past governors of Ekiti, Dr. Fayemi and Chief Oni. Chief Oni has thrown his hat into the ring, whether Dr. Fayemi will throw his hat into the ring is still speculative. He has not formally made any pronouncement to that effect. We have other people who are also in the contest, we have a situation where the so called big weights, I call them the usual suspects,  are throwing their hats into the ring and the newer generations are as well actually coming on board. It is a good thing that people are coming out, this will actually give the people the opportunities to actually assess the aspirants, to see how prepared they are for the contest. The APC is a strong political party and a good structure, so if we get into the primary as long as there is a level playing field, where everybody will feel free to contest that election, it will be difficult for anyone to come out of that election and go to court over the matter. Where that fear could actually come to play is when the party fails to provide the level playing ground for the primary. It could happen when people are complaining that some candidate where actually given undue advantage over others. I have seen a situation where our party had to call the party chairman and his vice to actually tell them, to tell the people what was going on. If we can have a process, where people would have a preconceived idea that certain people are being favoured, that will not be good for primary. I can tell you that about 20 of the aspirants are my friends, friends that we can sit together and we will play hard rancor free politics together, but we all have at the back of our minds, that the most crucial interest is the interest of Ekiti State. Ekiti must rise. It must be developed tapping into its huge human recourse base.

What do you want to do if you become governor?

Education and our huge human resource base and potentials will still be the focus and driving force of our rise in Ekiti State.

Even though we called ourselves the fountain of knowledge Ekiti State has not actually showcased that appellation. We have actually not done anything that is worthy of that identity that we have. That is painful! You don’t learn to be governor on the job, we pray that we will not have an accidental governor in Ekiti State. So, what can you do? In the first instant, Nigeria has survived 50 years of oil surplus. The oil is still there no doubt; all the states go to Abuja to get handouts. But what is the place of a state like Ekiti State which picks an average of  N2.5 billion every month? Are you telling me that the state cannot generate equally additional amount every month without imposing unnecessary taxes on the people? In the present days, to survive and compete anywhere in the world, not just Nigeria, a government has to think outside of the box.

Lagos State makes lots of money through its innovations and IGR. The economy of Lagos State is almost larger than the combined economies of the remaining 35 states in Nigeria. What is Lagos doing that other states are not doing?

In the annual statistics that was released by the National Bureau of Statistics for 2016, in the whole country, the total mineral resources produced in Nigeria, (outside of crude oil) was 42. 2 million tons, of that amount Ogun State took the lead and accounted for 38 percent, Kogi State came second, Ekiti State contributed 0.27 per cent.

  • Suntai’s brother dies, as ex-governor is buried

Former Taraba State Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai was on Saturday evening buried in his village Suntai, Bali local government area.

    There were tears and eulogies.

Hours later, his younger brother, Babangida Suntai died.

Former Taraba Information Commissioner Emmanuel Bello confirmed news of the death to The Nation.

“The Suntai family has been severely devastated,” a member of the family told The Nation in an emotion-laden voice yesterday.

Babangida Suntai died in Abuja, in an undisclosed hospital.

A family source said he was rushed to Abuja last week for treatment. “He was sick,” our source said.

Danbaba Suntai who was governor from 2007 to 2015, died on June 28, two days to his 56th birthday in Orlando, Florida, USA exactly four years and seven months after surviving an air crash in which he was the pilot.

He is survived by his wife Hauwa and five children (four daughters and a boy).

The last two are twins who were born in US where Suntai was being treated of the plane crash injuries.

The widow’s eyes had been swollen by ‘rivers’ of tears. It has been a harrowing experience for her in the last more than four years.

Danbaba Suntai’s funeral service was held in Jolly Nyame Stadium, Jalingo –the Taraba State capital.

Among the dignitaries were Governors Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe) and Simon Lalong (Plateau) who offered their deepest condolences.

The governors said they were touched by the late governor’s kind gesture and leadership qualities. They asked Taraba people to learn from the good legacies Suntai left for the state.

Taraba State Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku said Taraba, as a State, had entirely crashed with Danbaba Suntai on October 25, 2015 when the ill-fated Cessna 208 aircraft piloted by Suntai had a mishap.

“When Suntai had that plane crash, Taraba State literally crashed with him.

“The future and wellbeing of his family, the sanctity of his administration, and indeed, the wellbeing of the people of Taraba State also crashed with him.

“This is because the very fabric of the socio-economic being of the people of Taraba State was intricately interwoven within the stature of this great man and leader of our time.

“The news of Danbaba Suntai’s demise came to me as a rude shock, because from my human perspective, I looked forward with very high expectation to the day that he would be fully restored and returned home to us.

“But sadly, that was not to be. Words cannot describe the intensity and depth of my grief and the trauma that the immediate and extended family members of Suntai are going through, as well as the gloom that has settled on the government and good people of Taraba State,” Ishaku said.

Ishaku described his late predecessor as an “amiable leader and an icon par excellence who was very well known for his frankness, boldness and large heart given to sincere forgiveness.”

The governor remembered the three security aides of the late governor who survived the plane crash.

They were: Aide de Camp (ADC), Iliya Dasat, Chief Detail Joel Danladi and the Chief Security Officer (CSO) Tino Dangana who has been reappointed by Ishaku as his CSO.

They were asked to stand beside their late boss’ casket for the cameras and recognition.

Ishaku thanked all Nigerians, especially those who stood by the late governor during his trying moment and in death.

He said that the love they showed him was a great source of strength to the family and the people of Taraba State.

  • Boy whose genital was cut off by his stepmother is dead

Baby Buhari Dauda, Boy whose genital was cut off by his stepmother is dead

He  died in Wada village in Shiroro local Government area of Niger state after a brief malaria illness.

The Director General of the Childs Right Agency, Barrister Mariam Kolo who confirmed this to The Nation Wednesday said that Baby Buhari had a slight malaria which made his temperature to rise adding that he died even after been administered with his prescribed drug.

Kolo said that Baby Buhari had been slated to undergo a genital transplant in the United Kingdom before he died.

She said that the sickness was not a relapse on his health as he was doing extremely well after series of corrective surgeries carried out on him.

She expressed sadness over the death of the baby who is now over a year old adding that the it is being destined by God.

The DG said that moves are being made to ensure that advice is given speedily about the case and how the case of the step mother who is currently being remanded in the Old Minna Prison would be determined.

She said that the state Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello and his wife are devastated by the death of the Baby as they thought they would have contributed in making the life of the boy meaningful.

It would be recalled that on the 18th of June, 2016, then, two months old Buhari Dauda genitals were cut off by his 17 year old stepmother, Bara’atu Rabiu, who gave no cogent reason for the act.

The state government moved in to savage the situation by working towards ensuring the baby grows up into adulthood with a functional manhood, moves which was truncated with his demise.

  • Church killings: It’s all gang war, says governor

Church killings: It’s all gang war, says governor

    Osinbajo, Obiano vow of justice

    Police hold suspects

    Survivors relive day of horror

Anambra State Governor Willy Obiano yesterday described  Sunday’s  killings at  St. Philips Catholic Church, Amakwa, Ozubulu during Mass as a gang war that spilled to the state from an African country.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and Obiano vowed yesterday that the perpetrators of the crime would not go unpunished.

Obiano upgraded the death toll to 12 from the 11 announced by the police on Sunday.

The governor gave an insight into the killings in a broadcast to the people.

Also yesterday, some survivors relived their ordeal in interviews with our correspondent.

Obiano said: “What happened in Ozubulu yesterday was a tragic dimension of a long battle between two business partners who are from the same town. I have been fully informed that this dangerous conflict has been going on for a while in the country where they both live outside Nigeria before they decided to bring the conflict home.

“This explanation, I believe, has erased the fears that the incident may have been caused by either some terrorist organisations or some members of some groups of agitators in the country.

“Wat happened in Ozubulu was neither a terror attack as we know it, nor a violent action by some agitators. We are dealing with a dangerous gang war that has spilled over to Anambra State from another African country. But this is the last time it will happen under my watch”

He added that “The people directly and remotely involved in this crime are known to the law enforcement agencies. But no suspect, no matter how highly placed, is above the law. So, we have taken bold steps to bring them to book and restore the peace and tranquility that Anambra State has enjoyed since the past three years.”

Some survivors relived their experiences at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), where doctors are battling to save their lives.

The wife of a man who was believed to be the target of the gunman, Mrs. Caroline Ikegwuonwu, 40, is one of the injured at the hospital. Her husband, Mr. Chief Akunwafor Ikegwuonwu, was shot dead by the gunman who then turned his gun on other parishioners.

Okoye Patricia, 46, and her 20-year-old son, Odinaka Okoye, are also hospitalised as a result of bullet wounds.

But one of those who missed being hit by the bullet, 24 year old Mary Cynthia Ndulue’s brother, Samuel Ndulue, has his legs riddled with bullets.

Cynthia’s escape was “miraculous”, she said, thanking God for His mercy. She regretted that her brother was affected in the shootings.

Anambra State Police Commissioner Mr. Garba Baba Umar announced yesterday in Awka that the command had arrested some suspects over the killings.

Umar did not give the number of suspects in police net, but he assured residents not to panic.

Hospital authorities described survivors’ condition as  stable.

All was calm yesterday at Ozubulu. Residents were going about their normal businesses.

But the chairman of Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Ikenna Ofodeme, said they were not ruling out political influence in the tragedy as it is a governorship election year.

But he ruled out any terror link to the attack in which 12 persons died and 27 others were hospitalised.

He said the Obunadike family lost three persons. A member of the family, Mr. Joel Obunadike, told The Nation that he lost his uncle, his brother’s wife and her niece during the attack.

He was in tears. Ofodeme called on security agencies to wake up to their responsibilities. He praised the police commissioner and Assistant Inspector General of Police (Zone 9), Umuahia for their prompt response to the problem.

One of the community leaders in Ozubulu, Chief Timothy Nwadike, said what happened at the community was a national calamity.

He is the President General of Egbenma Ozubulu. He said the community would not allow anybody or group of people to destroy the peaceful community.

Another community leader, Chief John Ejimkonye, 70, told The Nation that what happened in Ozubulu was the handiwork of bad people.

He said everybody in the community, nay Anambra, had been in shock since Sunday. They are praying to God not to allow such a thing to happen again.

However, they refused to talk on the alleged feud between two suspected drug barons in their community, adding that only God could intervene in the calamity that had befallen the area.

At the hospital, Patricia Okoye, 46, and her son, Odinaka, said they were still in shock .

She said she saw the gunman who came into the church and started shooting, adding that it was later that she saw that a vehicle was stationed outside with other members of the gang in it.

Mrs. Ikegwuonwu, whose stepson is alleged to be one of the drug barons in the community, said she was short of words to describe the incident.

As she was struggling to talk, an elderly man bent down and whispered something to her. She stopped.

Chinasa Chukwueloka (25), another survivor of the attack, said the incident was too fast for anybody to give account of it.

One of the senior nurses at NAUTH, who preferred not to be named, said about six of the injured had been transferred to another place because of the extent of their fracture, adding that 12 of the victims were retained at the hospital.

They were transferred to the Accident and Emergency Complex.

Former Governor Dame Virgy Etiaba, who flew in from Lagos, was seen commiserating with the victims.

She described the shooting as “barbaric, satanic and inhuman”, adding that those behind it would not escape God’s punishment.

A former Commissioner for Health and pro-life activist, Prof. Linus Amobi Ilika, noted that though there had been shootings of Ozubulu indigenes living in South Africa and their bodies brought home, but the shooting of worshippers at St. Philip Catholic Church was an abomination against the land.

Ilika also said there was no evidence that High Chief Nnamdi Ikegwuonwu, who built the church where the lone gun man shot worshipers, was involved in drugs. He described him as a philanthropist.

Ilika, who was one time secretary general of Ozubulu Development Union, said the stories making the rounds that Chief Ikegwuonwu was in drugs business and may have offended his business partners, was untrue.

Ilika said the community does not know the young man’s trade, adding: “He has not been charged or arrested for such offences”

“There is a spate of shooting in South Africa and they brought down the corpses of our people living in South Africa.

“The person who built the church resides in South Africa. There is likely to be dispute and struggle among them but I cannot say exactly what the issues are.

“But for whatever it is there is no justification for assassinations and invasion of a place of worship to commit such mass killing of innocent worshippers,” the former commissioner said.

Perpetrators won’t go unpunished, says Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has assured that the perpetrators of the heinous crime at the St. Philip’s Catholic Church Ozubulu in Anambra State on Sunday would be brought to justice.

A statement by Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity Laolu Akande said Osinbajo had been receiving regular updates on the status of investigations regarding the atrocious and mindless acts of violence, which resulted in the death and injuries to some Nigerians..

The statement also said that the Acting President had been in touch with Anambra State Governor Willy Obiano, the police authorities and other security agencies on the matter.

Prof. Osinbajo also condemned the despicable acts of violence, and commiserated with families, relatives, friends of the victims, the entire people and the government of Anambra State.

  • Group wants Oyo Central to produce next governor

Group wants Oyo Central to produce next governor

A political pressure group under the auspices of Liberation Movement has decried what it called growing marginalization of the people of Oyo Central Senatorial District in the political equation of the state, alleging that since the advent of democracy in 1999, they have not been allowed to produce the governor of the state.

The group said in a statement signed by its leader, Victor Oyelayo and made available to newsmen in Abuja that none of the governors of the state since 1999 has come from the central Senatorial district with Oyo south and north dominating the scene.

According to the group, it is politically expedient to balance the democratic equations in the next dispensation with Oyo central producing the next governor in 2019″.

While saying it has begun series of engagement with various stakeholders in the state and beyond, the group said Oyo South alone has produced most of the governors such as Alh. Lam Adeshina, Sen. Rasheed Ladoja and the incumbent governor, Abiola Ajimobi among a host of deputy governors, while Oyo North produced Chief Alao Akala.

It said “emphasis must be placed on collective participation in Oyo state politics, the historical maneuvering, exploitation and political arm twisting of Oyo central must come to an end in 2019.”

“The growth and development of the state must not be undermined by ethnic, racial or sectional politicking, therefore, all hands must be on deck to develop Oyo state to an enviable standard and this can only be achieved when all interest groups and not just a few section is involved in running the affairs of the state.

“The appeal therefore goes to all stakeholders including the political elites, civil society and professional organizations, artisans, market men and women across the length and breadth of Oyo state to look beyond the two senatorial districts that have usurped power in the state in the last 18 years, rather, they should support the fight against sectional marginalisation to a stand still in future gubernatorial elections in the state.

“The highly sensitive political Pace Setter state needs a vibrant, intellectually sound, politically experienced and forward looking grassroots mobiliser from Oyo central senatorial district as Governor of Oyo state come 2019 for the dividends of democracy to be evenly distributed amongst the good people of Oyo state and to guarantee equity, fairness, social justice and a mutually beneficial political climate in the state.

“We have been marginalised for too long and our movement will continue to mobilise and vigorously pursue our goals by all legitimate means within and outside the state to conform with socially and politically acceptable standard,” the group stated.

A group has called on political parties in Ekiti State to field candidates from Ekiti South senatorial District as the electorate go to the poll next year to elect a new governor.

The Ekiti South for Governor Forum, warned that “Ekiti risks an imminent breakout of internal crisis,” if the South district is relegated in the politics of the State at a time when Nigerians are clamouring for total restructuring to correct some imbalances.

Its Chairman Chief Oluwole Ariyo, who made the call at a news conference in Ikere-Ekiti, stressed that the zone has quality aspirants worthy of being elected into the state highest office.

Ariyo said it was against equity, justice and fair play to deny Ekiti South an opportunity to produce governor for the first time since the state was created over 20 years ago. Ekiti Central and Ekiti North had enjoyed the slot before.

The call came on the heels of the declaration of former Governor Segun Oni for governor race while speculations are rife that his immediate predecessor and Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi was also interested.

Ekiti South comprise Gbonyin, Ikere, Ekiti East, Ise/Orun, Emure and Ekiti Southwest local government areas.

“The other two senatorial districts will be carrying a deadly and cancerous burden if they say the South does not have the right to produce governor in next year’s governorship election,” Ariyo contended.

He dismissed the argument of some interest groups in the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the party’s constitution does not make provision for zoning of political offices and positions.
