    Governor praises Ambode

The governorship bid of an All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant, Akinwunmi Ambode, received a boost at the weekend as letter of commendation written to him by Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola became public.

Ambode, who retired as the state’s Accountant-General after 27 years, was described by the governor as a dedicated and selfless man.

A group, Lagos Deserves More Forum, also said at the weekend it had been working with different groups across the state to broaden Ambode’s political support base.

The group said it had been waiting for Ambode to collect the APC forms.

In the letter of commendation dated December 2, 2012, Fashola wrote:  “I write on behalf of the government and people of Lagos State to specially praise you for the high sense of dedication, selflessness, loyalty and integrity, which you have brought to bear during you public service career.

“You have always been guided by the philosophy of a true public officer, who must place himself last while rendering service to the public. While convinced that your brilliance and zeal would make you excel in your future endeavours, please be assured of the support of the state government as might be required.”

  • ‘Why I want to be governor’

‘Why I want to be governor’

Senator Ifeanyi Araraume spoke at the weekend on why he is seeking the Imo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket.

He said unresolved  problems, which bordered on good governance, informed his desire to salvage the “heartland of Igbo land.”

His words: “For me, I had the aspiration first in 2007 and it didn’t work out that time. Certain things made me to say I wanted to be governor in 2007 because Imo is the heartland of the Southeast. It is the heartland of the East actually and I believe that in Imo, we have a lot to offer if only the state has in governance, somebody who actually knows what to do.

  • Maeba to run for Rivers governor

Maeba to run for Rivers governor

Senator Lee Maeba has promised to solve the problem of housing facing the people of Rivers State when he becomes the governor next year.

He made the promise in Port Harcourt, the state capital, at the weekend, when he declared his ambition to run for the governorship position on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The senator, who represented Rivers South East in the Senate, condemned the free-for-all, which ensued among PDP members during a parley at Legacy House, Abuja, urging politicians to eschew politics with bitterness.

  • Ngama: why I want to be governor

Ngama: why I want to be governor

Former Minister of State for Finance Dr Yerima Ngama has explained why he wants to be Yobe State governor.

He said it was to reverse the state’s “unfavourable development indices for the good of the common man”.

Ngama is the only aspirant who has picked the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) N11 million nomination form.

There are indications that former Minister of Police Affairs and Agriculture Adamu Maina Waziri is also interested in the seat, which he has contested and failed four times.

Speaking with reporters in Damaturu, Ngama said: “There can never be a better time to serve Yobe than now. My ambition is hinged on the plight of the common people, who are poor in the majority. I am convinced that the time to offer myself for the service of my state at this exalted capacity is now.

“My ambition is not personal; it is the ambition of every common man that desires change in Yobe. Together, we are going to reverse the negative developmental indices that have characterised our dear state since its creation in 1991. In any development statistics taken in the country, you will discover that Yobe is either the second to the last or the last.

“The time has come for our people to live a good life and make healthy children for future generations and that is what I represent if I am voted as governor.”

Pledging to eradicate polio and other diseases, and reduce child/maternal mortality if elected, Ngama said: “We have the worst result in maternal mortality rate; 218 of every 1,000 women die at childbirth. Polio has been eradicated in all states except Yobe. This is unacceptable.”

  • Deputy Governor donates equipment to military hospital

Deputy Governor donates equipment to military hospital

The cordial relationship between the Imo State Government and security agencies in the state received a significant boost recently with the donation of multi-million Naira hospital equipment to the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze by the State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere.

According to the donor, the equipment, a digital Dental Chair, will improve health care delivery not only within the Brigade but also within the entire state.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony which was attended by members of 34 Artillary Brigade and neighbouring communities, the Garrison Commander, T. A. Adedoja, on behalf of the Brigade Commander, Brig. Gen. Bello, thanked Eze Madumere for his generosity.

He assured the Deputy Governor that the Military Hospital in the Brigade will make judicious use of the equipment for the benefit of patients.

In his speech, the Commander, recalled the challenges they experienced in assessing dental treatments as they had to rely on other hospitals for the dental needs of their patients.

Expressing the gratitude of the Brigade, he called on members of the state executive council and members of the public to visit the hospital for their medical needs, noting that the hospital is not only meant for the Army but also for patients from the host community and beyond.

He further reminded the guests of the significance of the hospital, which he said has become a major medical centre for accident victims along the Owerri-Elele Expressway.

The Deputy Governor, who expressed his happiness over the installation of the equipment, said the sorry state of the Dental Unit of the hospital motivated him to make the donation.

He said: “The sorry state of the Dental Unit of the hospital during my visit to the Artillery Brigade at the last Armed Forces Remembrance Day underscored the strategic importance of the Military Hospital. I therefore made a promise to help to procure befitting equipment because of the fact that the Army and people of the state rely on the hospital.”

He, however, gave the credit of the gesture to the Governor Rochas Okorocha, who he said, taught him to give and reach out to the downtrodden.

Madumere described the Governor as one of the rarest and greatest givers ever known; who he said has over 12, 000 students across the country he has adopted as his own children.

He assured of the state government’s collaboration in areas of strategic importance, especially the health sector and the sustenance of positive security status of the state.

He, therefore, called on well-meaning people of the state and other Nigerians to help assist in whatever way they can to help give succour to the hopeless.

  • Ijaw, Ogoni renew claim to Rivers governor

Ijaw, Ogoni renew claim to Rivers governor

The battle for which area of Rivers State should produce Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s successor continued yesterday. The Ijaw, the Ogoni and a section of the Ikwerre backing Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike are involved.

The Ogoni added a new angle to it by organising a prayer session yesterday. The Ijaw, speaking through the Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), at the weekend, said it was not negotiating its right to produce Amaechi’s successor.

The renewed battle is coming on the heels of condemnation of the violence at a parley of the Rivers Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja last Thursday. The violence is not unconnected with the quest of the Ijaw in Rivers PDP to stop Wike, an Ikwerre man, from succeeding his kinsman, Amaechi.

IYC President Udens Eradiri said the next Rivers governor must be an Ijaw person.

He spoke at a summit organised by the IYC in Warri.

“An Ijaw man must be governor in Rivers State, but we must help ourselves. Even now those who can’t even afford the form have started jostling to be governor,” Eradiri said.

Ogoni leaders from four of the Rivers State’s 23 Local Government Areas of Khana, Gokana, Eleme and Tai, spoke at a dedication service and special prayer session organised by the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) held yesterday at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral in Bori, the traditional headquarters of Ogoniland.

MOSOP President Legborsi Saro Pyagbar called for an end to the political marginalisation of Ogoni people, who are yet to produce governor, deputy governor, speaker of the House of Assembly and chief judge, since the creation of Rivers state from the defunct Eastern Region on May 27, 1967.

Pyagbara also called for the full implementation of the recommendations contained in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoniland’s environmental assessment, in order to end pollution, environmental degradation and marginalisation of the crude oil and gas-rich area by the Federal Government and the oil companies.

The MOSOP president, who took the first lesson from Isaiah 6: 1-8, requested a minute silence for all Ogoni, who lost their lives in the course of the struggle, including the renowned environmentalist, Ken Saro-Wiwa.

Pyagbara declared that an Ogoni emerging as the next governor of Rivers state was non-negotiable, in order to ensure justice, equity and fairness. He urged all the political parties, especially the APC and the PDP, to field only Ogoni persons as their governorship candidates.

The service, which had as theme: “That We May Be One,” was presided over by the Bishop of the Methodist Diocese of Bori, Rt. Rev. Innocent Ndinwii, had the governorship aspirants of two of the political parties in attendance.

The governorship aspirants at the service were the representative of the Rivers Southeast Senatorial District, Magnus Ngei Abe, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was represented by a member of the House of Representatives, Barry Mpigi, an Ogoni, who represents Tai, Eleme, Oyigbo constituency and Abe’s predecessor in the Senate, Lee Maeba, of the PDP.

In attendance at the service were also the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Leyii Kwanee; Rivers Commissioner for Works, Chief Victor Tombari Giadom; the representative of Gokana constituency in the Rivers House of Assembly, Dr. Innocent Barikor; Chairmen of the four Ogoni local government councils and other eminent personalities.

MOSOP president said:                                                                                                                                                                                                                          “Twenty four years after the launch of the OBR, it is our time to produce governor. If we miss it this time, God forbid, we will have to wait till 2031. We must stop the political marginalisation of Ogoni people now. The MOSOP’s campaign is not centred around any political party. President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Rotimi Amaechi and leaders of all the political parties should look the way of Ogoni people, as they are taking their decisions. We have competent persons. We are angry in MOSOP. That is why we are involved in this campaign.”

Pyagbara also assured that Ogoni people would sink their political differences this time and speak with one voice, while calling on the youths and others to shun violence and bloodletting, drop their personal interests and support the collective Ogoni interest to produce Rivers governor next year, adding that behind the tragic history of Ogoni people, there is hope.

The President of the umbrella organisation of Ogoni elite, KAGOTE (Khana, Gokana, Tai and Eleme), Dr. Peter Medee, expressed optimism in Ogoni producing the next occupant of Brick House (Government House) in Port Harcourt, but said the peace-loving people must continue to be united.

Medee said if an Ogoni is not elected as Rivers governor next year, the people would have to wait for another 24 years, saying the campaign against zoning was a conspiracy against the Ogoni people.

Abe said Ogoni people would not continue to be slaves, saying: “This is liberation time. Ogoni people are prepared to move forward by producing the next governor. The unity of Ogoni must continue.”

Maeba, who is of the PDP, declared that: “It is our time to produce Rivers governor. People who can do it are in Ogoniland. Dr. Peter Odili is of Rivers West Senatorial District. Sir Celestine Omehia and Governor Amaechi are from Rivers East Senatorial District. It is the turn of Rivers Southeast Senatorial District and an Ogoni person will be the next governor of Rivers State. Elections are coming and they are now saying no to zoning. We will not accept it.

“When we produce Ogoni governor in 2015, it will be easier to have Bori State.”

Rt. Rev. Ndinwii said he was glad that Ogoni people were now speaking with one voice, while admonishing them not to betray the just cause.

He said: “Whatever happens in Ogoni, we should demonstrate faithfulness, love and forgiveness. If we do, good things are on the way and all of us will celebrate.

A PDP governorship aspirant, Mr Tonye Princewill, condemned last Thursday’s violence at the party’s reconciliation parley in Abuja.

Nyesom Wike yesterday insisted there was no violence at the meeting.

Wike, through his media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, supplied pictures showing factions of the party exchanging pleasantries.

He added that a chieftain of the party, Chief Sara Igbe, after being part of the peaceful process, “went ahead to mislead journalists who were not around”.

Princewill, in a statement at the weekend, apologised to Nigerians on behalf of the party.

He said the incident was regrettable.

Princewill’s statement by his Personal Assistant (Media and Publicity), Wabiye Idoniboye-Obu, reads: “As the 2015 elections draw closer, statements, actions and decisions become more influential in moulding the future of our dear state. The incident at the Legacy House in Abuja is not just condemnable but an embarrassment to Nigeria’s democracy, the PDP and the good people of Rivers State.

“Portraying the party in a bad light will not help its growth and existence and will do those of us who wish the President well, no good whatsoever.

“No individual’s ambition is more important than the peace and development of our state. Following the perceived security challenge, and advice from some PDP national stakeholders, Prince Tonye was not present at the integration committee sitting, but had earlier submitted his memorandum. A Rivers state in crisis is a region in crisis. And our region in crisis will not bode well for our beloved nation. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.”

  • Mambilla honour for Taraba Acting Governor

The Acting Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar, has been described as not just a political leader but also one of the greatest sons of the Mambilla ethnic group. And what is greatness if it is not recognised by the anonymous many. The aftermath of recognising him as one of their greatest sons was the conferment on him of the most prestigious chieftaincy title in Mambilla Plateau. He is now the “Sardauna Mambilla.”

For him, the day will ever remain memorable, as the people of Mambilla honoured him at a colourful and carnival-like ceremony. In Umar, the people saw hard work, loyalty and humility.

Preparations for the conferment of the title on him took a week. But when the day finally came, the crowd that attended the event was more than what the organisers had bargained for.

There were various cultural displays to thrill the guests who came from different states across the country. There were also guests from the neighbouring Cameroun Republic.  The people said the title was their traditional way of appreciating the immense contributions of Umar  to the development of the Mambilla ethnic group in particular and the state in general.

Some of the personalities that graced the occasion included Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo; his Bauchi counterpart, Isa Yuguda; Minister of State for Niger Delta Mr. Darius Ishaku and the Deputy Governor of Katsina State.

Others were the Premier of Adamawa, Dr. Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha; Emir of Gombe Alhaji Abubakar Usman Abubakar; the Chief of Kaltungo, Mr. Saleh Mohammed. as well as other Emirs and chiefs in the state.

“This is a platform for uniting the people of Taraba State and Nigeria,” one observer said.

The revered Chief of Mambilla, Dr.  Shehu Audu Baju II performed the conferment at the Muhammadu Mansur Stadium in Gembu in Sardauna Local Government Area.

The chief said the event was in appreciation of the Acting Governor’s “immense contributions to the development of the Mambilla Plateau and Taraba State.”

The monarch noted that the Acting Governor played a pivotal role in settling the chieftaincy crisis which had rocked the people of Mambilla for 12 years.

“He (Umar) used his wisdom to reconcile the hitherto warring ruling houses within the few months of his assumption of office,” he said.

Baju added that the Acting Governor should see the title -which is highest in the land, as a challenge to do more for the development of not only Mambilla Plateau, but also the entire state.

The Sardaunan Mambilla said he has been honoured in the past with several traditional titles and awards, but the recognition by the Mambilla people was “very special and dear” to him.

Umar said the honour was special because of its historic attachment to the shining star of Northern Nigeria, the late Sardauna of Sokoto Sir Ahmadu Bello.

“I feel humbled to be honoured by the people of Mambilla. As I took time to reflect on the significance of this event, I have come to the conclusion that, for whatever reasons, I have been chosen to serve as the Sardaunan Mambilla. What I will not shy away from is the fact that I have, again, been called upon to do more.

“I assure the royal fathers and everyone present that I will do my best to justify the confidence reposed in me,” he said.

The Emir of Muri, Abbas Tafida praised the people of Mambilla Plateau for “building a bridge of peace,” by conferring on the Acting Governor the title of Sardaunan Mambilla, as Umar hails from Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of the state.

Tafida sued for unity among the various ethnic and religious groups in Taraba State to enable the state to develop. He added that the people would have nowhere to go if Taraba is destroyed.

He said: “Developing Mambilla Plateau must be a priority of the government of Taraba State, because it will mean developing the people of the area by encouraging their education for the exploitation of the abundant potential that abounds there.

“The state government should establish a potato processing plant to tap the potential as well as set up special insemination units on the Mambilla Plateau to produce better cows with better value.

“The government should acquire and provide grass seeds which could be grown on the Plateau to improve the forests for both domestic and international consumptions; for the people and cattle.”

  • Ex-Adamawa deputy governor’s suit for hearing

Ex-Adamawa deputy governor’s suit for hearing

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja will, tomorrow, hear a suit filed by former Adamawa State Deputy Governor Bala Ngilari.

Ngilari is urging the court to declare him governor, saying he should legitimately succeed impeached Governor Murtala Nyako.

After hearing arguments from parties last Friday, Justice Adeniyi Ademola said he would hear all pending applications, including the substantive suit, tomorrow.

  • I’m fit to be governor again at 70, says Ladoja

FORMER Oyo State governor Rashidi Ladoja has assured his supporters that he was still fit to be governor again, even though he would clock 70 years tomorrow.

Ladoja, who is the leader of the state’s Accord, said he was still as strong as Nelson Mandela and Adekunle Ajasin at the time they served as South African president and Ondo State governor.

The former governor, who stated this while addressing reporters in Ibadan yesterday, pledged to lead the state to the path of greatness and bring the people to prosperity, if he returns as governor one more time.

He said the Latin expression, Mens sana in corpore sano, which means “A sound mind in a sound body,” aptly describes him as he clocks 70 years.

The former governor said those seeing his age as a barrier were jittery of defeat even before the actual 2015, adding that scenarios in older democracies have shown that invaluable advantages accrue from having a mature and highly experienced administrator in charge of governance.

Ladoja said a survey conducted by his party showed that 80 per cent of the people still want him to come back as governor in 2015.

He said: “In politics, people use primordial sentiments to eliminate their opponents because they feel they cannot compete with me. Therefore, they want to eliminate me before the race starts and because they know I am still very strong to lead the state to the promised land.

“As governor, am I going into office to hew trees? Or am I going to be breaking stones? At what age did Mandela become president of South Africa, after the rigours he went through in prison for 27 years? Did that distract him from achieving his objective for South Africa at that time?

“At what age did Adebayo Adefarati and Papa Michael Ajasin become governor? If they are not afraid, let them present themselves and not say Ladoja should come and anoint them.

“Age is in the mind. I believe so much in God that anything I want, He will do it for me. I don’t frustrate myself and I do not panic. At 70, my blood pressure still remains 110/70.

“Even at the height of my impeachment, my doctor would come and be shivering about what my BP would read. But as soon as he took it, he would relax – still the same 110/70.”

  • Delta SSG backs Obuh for governor

Secretary to the Delta State Government Ovuozorie Macaulay has described an aspirant, Tony Chuks Obuh, as a ‘near perfect gentleman’ who served the state diligently and qualified to be governor.

Macaulay who is also the Supervisory Coordinator, Isoko Federal Constituency, Project Obuh 2015, said Obuh “always discharged his responsibilities with smiles on his face,”

“He is someone you can trust with great responsibilities while you sleep, never tired and one without complaints.”

The SSG spoke at a valedictory service for Obuh, who was retiring after 32 years of service.

Macaulay, who was Obuh’s boss before his retirement, described him as a dependable man, intelligent and full of initiatives and prayed to God to lead aright.

The aspirant said he started the civil service in the then Bendel State as an administrative officer. The civil service work, he said, gave him a new attitude to life and people, shaped and molded him and challenged him with responsibilities that made him strong.

Obuh lauded Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for the opportunity given him to serve.

Rev. Joseph Ugboh said there is dignity in labour and fulfillment for those who work actively in building the kingdom of God on earth.

Rev. Ugboh promised that the church would continue to pray for the state and for Obuh as he continues with his consultations.
