  • Governors’ wives chart ways forward

    Governors’ wives chart ways forward

This year’s 3-day National Women’s Conference, organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos Sate Officials (COWLSO), which was tagged “Strong Family, Strong Nation,” was another opportunity for the wives of government officials in the state to map out ways for the development of the state and the improvement of the welfare of the inhabitants of the state, Omolara Akintoye reports

HAVING wondered how best they could assist and complement the efforts of their husbands and indeed the state government, the idea of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) was established. COWLSO which was established 16 years ago has grown in leaps and bounds and has since become a channel through which these women contribute their quota to the development of the state and the improvement of the welfare of Lagosians.

This year’s 16th National Women’s Conference, which was tagged ‘Strong Family, Strong Nation’ and held at the Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, provided an opportunity for these women to, among other things, be exposed to topics such as building blocks of the family unit; protection of family values as well as how best to ensure effective transfer of one’s assets to loved ones after demise. The founding objective of COWLSO, according to the Chairman and wife of the governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, was to assist the government in adding value to the lives of the entire populace.”Our committee has faithfully applied itself to this ideal over the years, which has resulted in the successful completion of many people-oriented projects across the state.

The theme for this year’s conference, according to Mrs. Ambode, was carefully chosen bearing in mind the strength of its family units. Her words: “When family units are bound together in love and children are raised in the fear of God and high socio-moral values, it begets a good and peaceful society and country, where social vices are reduced to its barest minimum.”

In his topic, titled ‘the Art of Parenting’, Jerome Onipede said parents must be equipped in rearing balanced individuals who are raised with virtues that enable them to encourage commitment, appreciation, time communication, religion, shared responsibilities and service to others. Anything short of this, according to Onipede, is dangerous.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, it was revealed,  is doing all he can protect and safeguard people living with disabilities  from all forms of discrimination and equalise their potentials in every area. He has urged the National Assembly to speedily work to pass Disability Bill,” said Honorable Uzamat Akinbile Yusuf while delivering her lecture.

Highlighting some of its achievement in the last one year, Mrs. Ambode said COWLSO has added to its list of achievement with two major projects: the upgrading of the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos; the second is the distribution hearing aid devices to persons with hearing defects, most of whom are children. Other projects sponsored by COWLSO include goiter surgeries for over 30 women, visit to orphanages with food items and cash gifts, among others.

Other major highlights of the conference include the investiture of Senator Oluremi Tinubu as COWLSO’s new Grand Matron and the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award given to Tara Fela Durotoye, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, House of Tara. Other award recipients include, Princess Adejoke Orelope Adefulire, Sir Kensington Adebutu, Chief Mrs.  Kemi Nelson, Dr. Cosmas Maduka of Coscharis Group and Mr. Jack Quo of Noble Fashions Limited.

At the end of the three-day conference, participants were fully charged and ready to make the family stronger by effecting positive changes.

She said: “As wives of political office holders, we must continue to do our best in contributing to the success.

“I believe in our little ways, we can assist them to bring succour to the populace, especially those in need such as victims of insurgency in the North East and other forms of violence, physically challenged and other vulnerable groups.

“It is on this note I felt it is important for us to come together to strengthen our unity and extend our solidarity to each other under a common platform.

“There, we need to develop strong leadership structures in the two regions not only in one as the case with the already known Northern Governors Wives Forum of the country.” She added

Aisha also called for the restructuring of the two regional halves of the forum to boost networking, cooperation and constructive partnership.

She urged the First Ladies to be prepared to deal with programmes that are capable of impacting positively on the lives of citizens particularly the less privileged members of the society.

She listed some of the challenges facing the poor to include widowhood rites, female inheritance rights, female genital mutilation, early marriages, violence against women and children, high maternal mortality and women economic empowerment.
