  • Buhari calls Gowon, consoles him on sister’s death

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday commiserated with former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd), over the death of his younger sister, Kande Martha Audu.

The President, who called from London, extended his deepest condolences to Gowon and his family, urging them to take solace in the fact that Mrs. Audu lived a worthy and exemplary life.

Buhari, in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said “death is an inevitable end that must come to all mortals, and we must keep praying and working to ensure that we live a life that pleases our Creator and benefits humanity.”

He also prayed that God will comfort the grieving family and grant rest to the soul of the deceased.

Gowon, who thanked President Buhari for the commiserations, assured him that he will not relent in praying for the unity and progress of the country.

He told him that Nigerians are also praying for his quick recovery.

•Ex-Head of State preaches unity, love

The Aso Villa Chapel yesterday organised its annual end of the year thanksgiving with former Heads of State – Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo and Ernest Shonekan – in attendance.

The service, which took place in the chapel, was also attended by former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, former Chiefs of General Staff Ebitu Ukiwe and Oladipo Diya and host Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Osinbajo said the service was an exciting time to thank God for all he had done for the country during the year.

“Today is a special thanksgiving for the end of the year and as you have seen, all the former Presidents and vice presidents are here for the special thanksgiving service.

“They have been specially invited to come; we also expected President Jonathan, but unfortunately, he had to cancel at the last moment.

“So, we are all extremely excited that we have been able to bring everyone together to thank God for our nation and to give Him thanks for the great future ahead of us,’’ he said.

Gen. Gowon said he was delighted to be at the service with other former colleagues and thanked Osinbajo for facilitating his attendance.

Gowon said he was more excited with the children, who came also to do their thanksgiving and prayed to God to bless the children in a special way.

He enjoined the children to keep the faith with other Christians “to always make sure that we keep this country one and together’’.

He urged Christians to love every Nigerian in spite of their faith following the injunction of Jesus Christ to love your neighbour.

“Our neighbours are Christian, Muslim, traditional religions, among others. Whatever we do, we make sure that we live up to the expectation of what Christ expects of us,’’ he said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, thanked the Vice President and organisers of the service for bringing the past and present leaders to the service.

The Chaplain of the Aso Villa Chapel, Pastor Seyi Malomo, in his message, said thanksgiving was an injunction from God, adding that everyone in spite of status must thank God in all circumstances.

According to him, thanksgiving is an acknowledgement that God is alive, adding that each time the faithful gave thanks; they demonstrate their faith in God.

Recession: Gowon seeks support for govt

EX-Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon  has urged Nigerians to support the Federal Government in its effort to address the recession.

Gen. Gowon, chairman of “Nigeria Prays’,’ spoke at a news conference on the organisation’s 20th anniversary in Abuja, yesterday.

He expressed optimism in the ability of this administration to take the country out of its challenges, saying the problems that led to recession had lingered for years coupled with the drop in the nation’s oil revenue profile.

According to him, things are not achieved overnight; we have missed out in some of these things over the years, that is why industries are not able to meet up.

“Let us join heads and cooperate with the government so that something can be done about it; that is why the country needs continuous and fervent prayers.

“The government should consult within and outside the government. We are at this level because of the political, economic, security and other problems that surround the country.’’

Gowon explained that the aims of Nigeria Prays is to promote the virtues of patriotism, transparency, and incorruptibility in leadership and governance.

He added that the organisation would provide opportunity for any Nigerian, irrespective of denominational affiliation, to be involved in the mission of birthing a new nation through prayers.

The former head of state explained that the anniversary would afford Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the past, present and future of the nation politically, socially, economically and spiritually.

“Prayer can solve problems better and more permanent than generals and soldiers can do with physical weapons for war. I have no doubt in my mind that God will honour our collective prayer and intercession for our nation,’’ Gen. Gowon said.

On the arrest of judges by the DSS, Gen. Gowon appealed to the government to ensure that security agencies operate within the law and respect the fundamental rights of citizens.

Gowon added that nobody could be arrested outside the precepts of the law.

    presentation of biography

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday described President Muhammadu Buhari as “a true democrat”.

He spoke in Abuja during the public presentation of a book entitled: “Muhammadu Buhari – The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria”.

Tinubu, one of the reviewers of the book, also described Buhari as a disciplined and focused person right from his youthful days.

The former Lagos State Governor said Buhari was in haste to bring change as a young leader, but as an older leader, Buhari “is now slow and steady”.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon and former United States Ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell also eulogised the President.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife Dolapo, Senate President Bukola Saraki and his wife Toyin, Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara and his wife, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun attended the ceremony.

There were also Presidents Idris Deby of Chad, President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic  and President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger.

Presidents of Cameroon and Equitorial Guinea sent representatives.

Tinubu said: “Essentially, the book explores how his professional career, his personal life and prior experiences in government shaped and prepared him for the momentous assignment he now has.

“From the book’s pages, we see a man who has lived his life on assignments that always intersected with vital moments in the nation’s history. He was a man on assignment, when, in the military, he served bravely in a civil war to keep Nigeria united.

“He was on national assignment when he became military head of state in a well-intentioned effort to straighten things out, and set Nigeria on a better path.

“When he ventured into politics and competed for the Presidency, culminating in his 2015 election victory, he was still on assignment, showing that there was no other way for this nation to go but the way of democracy, no matter how difficult the path may be.

“Now, as sitting President, he is on an assignment, against time, to undo the wrongs of nearly two decades of bad governance.

“Such is the life of this man. Always in the public eye, doing things in his different, disciplined and Spartan way. From this compelling narrative, neatly demarcated into three parts and 24 chapters, the reader is able to glean the quintessential Buhari.”

According to him, the book makes an educative and informative reading as he called for re-introduction of history as a subject in Nigerian schools.

“The book is a timely narrative. Apart from being a senior officer to Buhari, Tinubu said Gen. Theophilus Danjuma and Buhari enjoyed a professional and personal friendship unparalleled in Nigeria’s history.

“His words confirm that Buhari was a man prepared for leadership ahead of a time like this.

“The formation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is an important event that the book addresses. The merger was the result of teamwork, belief in the democratic will of the people and a commitment to national purpose.

“Many of us invested ourselves, our heart, body, mind and soul in this project for national salvation. Many did not want it to happen and fought to undermine the good we sought to accomplish. Many others straddled the sidelines, neither completely in nor completely out, but waiting to see how the prevailing winds might blow before making their move.

“Muhammadu Buhari never wavered for one moment on this journey. Proving to be a focused leader, he acted with single-minded determination that showed no fear or doubt in the rightfulness of the cause we pursued.

“So many people made contributions that made the historic merger possible. It would be impossible to give each person the accolades they deserve in a concise work such as this one. However, it is an account that we must begin to chronicle fully, and with care, for it is the story of when reform came to the land.

According to him, the founding fathers of the APC had three challenges while forming the ‘new’ party.

The first challenge, he said, was learning the right lessons from the aborted attempt at political cooperation in 2011.

“Talks mainly between the CPC, led by Buhari, and the ACN, led by myself, later joined by the ANPP and the progressive wing of APGA, would go more smoothly and would reach the desired finish-line this time. There would be a merger and there would be a presidential candidate agreeable to all. A winning combination had been joined.

”It would give the PDP, which had boasted of 60 continuous years in power, more than it could handle. After the successful merger and the birth of APC, it was time to pick a flag bearer. At the Lagos convention, President Buhari emerged as the new party’s choice in a transparently-honest process. His speech to the convention was greeted with ovation, even by those who had opposed him.

”This set the tone for the campaign to come. But first, there was the sticky issue of selecting a running mate. After careful study and discussion, it was agreed that we should field a religiously-balanced ticket given the sensitivities of the moment.

”Based on this conclusion, the name of Yemi Osinbajo, renowned law professor and former Lagos State Attorney-general during my tenure as governor, was proposed as an excellent running mate.

“Osinbajo was also a pastor in the largest church in the entire country, and this would answer those who wrongfully tried to paint Buhari as intolerant.”

Noting that President Buhari made three electoral promises on Security, Corruption and Employment, Tinubu said: “On security, success has been recorded in decimating Boko Haram. On corruption and the rule of law, Buhari continues to plough new ground.”

Another reviewer of the book, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, challenged APC governors to replicate the change mantra in their states.

“We must support Buhari so that we can take our country back from the enemies, the looters,” he said

The Special Guest of Honour, former President Obasanjo said that the book confirmed what he knew about Buhari but didn’t represent a definitive assessment of the President.

Gen. Gowon, who is the chairman of the occasion, said Buhari fought many battles to get to where he is today.

“He deserves every word of praise today,” he said.

The President of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mrs Nike Akande, said Nigerian business community remained grateful to President Buhari for the establishment of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment under the chairmanship of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

This, she said, was a clear demonstration of the Buhari-led administration’s resolve to fix the investment climate issues in the economy and enhance private sector competitiveness.

”He has given Nigeria a leadership that the country deserves at this critical moment of our history. In the last 16 months, Nigeria’s image has improved internationally,” she added.

The author, Prof. Paden, described the book as an attempt to introduce Buhari to the international audience since Nigerians already knew who Buhari is.

He said: “This book seeks to answer the questions: who’s President Buhari and how he’s grappling with the many challenges of Nigeria. My initial motivation was to introduce President Buhari to the international audience on the assumptions that Nigerians already knew their president.

“But increasingly, I came to feel that, perhaps, Nigerians might find it useful to review. I also wanted to address the issue of leadership.

“In the past, one such period was the civil war, another was the time of influx of petroleum dollars. The book follows Buhari through his challenges in and out of the office, his military training in the UK and elsewhere, his roles in military regime, including his time as military head of state for 20 months, his detention, his reemergence as a civil society leader and his eventual engagement in politics in the Fourth Republic since 1999.”

President Issoufou, who spoke in French, also lauded the efforts of President Buhari’s administration in fighting Boko Haram to a standstill.

Gowon urges support for anti-graft war

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), on Tuesday urged Nigerians to support the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Gowon noted that corruption is one of the problems that had created serious setback for Nigeria nationally and internationally.

He said: “These are some of the issues we talked about, one appreciates his efforts and determination to rid the country of corruption. Corruption is one of the problems that had held the country down and created serious setback for the country both nationally and internationally.

“And then of course the current situation about the Chibok girls and the efforts the government is making to rescue them. He said the government needs to get credible information about the whereabouts of the girls and also those that would assist the government achieve that.

“I believe that the government is certainly determined to ensure that a number of these girls are brought back home safely as soon as possible. To achieve that, certain credibility must be established on our sources of information and their location. But presently, no one knows where these girls are.

“All these information that you have been getting, I don’t know their sources. But all efforts at engaging the international media and sources are necessary so that this matter can be resolved once and for all.”

The ex- Head of State also disclosed that he was in the Villa to say hello to the President and inform him of his plan to travel outside the country on vacation.

He added: “So I have come to let him know that I would be out of the country. In case he wants me, he knows that I’m out and he is going to pay my way back, if he wants me back for any programme.”

Gowon: I became Head of State by accident of history

Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon has attributed his ascension 50 years ago to the accident of history.

He said he did not nurse the ambition to be leader of the country.

Gen. Gowon spoke when the Deputy Chairman of Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Sen. Shehu Sani, visited him in Abuja, yesterday.

The former Head of State was reacting to calls by some Nigerians for the reduction of the age limit to 30 years to contest for president.

“What happened was the accident of history.

“When you have lost your leadership and there was crisis and you don’t know what to do and it happened that those within your constituency chose you, what would you do?

“I was lucky enough within the military at that time and all the officers knew me by reputation.

“I had no intention to become Head of State but it is the opportunity, if opportunity presents itself and people ask you to do it then do it.

“What I have achieved is (because of) God. I had never thought of becoming Head of State but there was a coup and all my senior colleagues were killed and I was the only one that survived.

“My plan was to rise in my profession and hopefully become a head in my profession but that did not happen.

“I didn’t know what happened but I had the duty and responsibility to ensure the coup in Lagos did not succeed’’, he said.

The former Head of State advised younger Nigerians to prepare themselves academically and morally to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

Gen. Gowon became leader of Nigeria, following the military coup of July 1966. The earlier coup had brought democracy to an end in the country, with the killing of regional political leaders in the northern and western regions, the prime minister and senior military officers of northern extraction.

As a military leader, he reigned for nine years, during which Nigeria also fought a civil war (1967-70).

    Punish those liable, says Gowon

Former Military Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon yesterday called for stiff penalty for anyone found guilty of the padding.

He said punishing those found wanting after investigation would deter others.

Speaking with reporters last night at the Health Caravan and Award ceremony at Ile Ife in Osun State, he wondered why issue had become the order of the day.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi was conferred with the Royal Ambassador for Hepatitis Advocacy in Nigeria by the Seham Health Care Foundation at the event.

Gowon said: “If that is true. If anybody is doing that (budget padding), the person should be checked and stopped to ensure that such does not occur in the future. We didn’t it do it during my time. We had Chief Obafemi Awolowo in-charge of our finance during my time and he taught us to survive without borrowing. Such (budget padding) should stop, there is no point doing that.”

The former Head of State also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to firm up the ailing economy to alleviate the suffering.

Advising Nigerians to cooperate with the Buhari administration, he said the Buhari administration was doing everything possible to resolve the nation’s economic challenges.

He said: “Let the current authority find a way out of the current economic crisis. Minister of Finance Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has been telling us what they have been doing to get the economy strong again. She said all will be well by September. Let’s wait till then.

“I left government a long time ago, so I may not really know what the problem is. The current administration should do whatever they can to solve to economic challenges. They should find a way to restore confidence in the citizens and the nation at large by fixing the economy.”
