  • 50 mechanics, 200 others graduate from auto school

Fifty unemployed youths, sponsored by the Lagos State Government for intensive computerised automobile repair training, yesterday graduated as mechanics.

The ceremony took place at Adeyemi Bero Hall, Alausa, Ikeja.

They graduated six months after they started the training at Automedics Nigeria Ltd, Ilupeju, Lagos.

They were trained in auto-diagnosis, auto-electrical, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and heavy duty/diesel engine repair.

Two hundred others graduated at the event, after acquiring employability skills, including critical thinking, problem solving and time management to secure good jobs and become outstanding entrepreneurs from a sponsored training at a Lagos-based Wave Academy.

Wealth Creation and Employment Commissioner Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf urged the graduands to make good use of the skills acquired to better their lives.

She said: ”The emphasis is to give the youth skills in such a way that they are employable and also encouraged to embrace entrepreneurship, leveraging on innovative technology. Innovations in the automobile industry have gradually transformed what it means to be an auto repair worker. As the cars on the streets become more computerised, so it becomes more imperative to be able to properly diagnose, maintain and repair these computers on wheels. A trade that was once largely done through trial and error is today highly technical and therefore requires workers to have well-informed InfoTech skills.”

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Dr. Olufemi Salaam, said some of the graduands would be employed in the Lagos State Computerised Vehicle Service Unit of the ministry.

Automedics Nigeria Ltd’s Chief Operating Officer Mr. Gbola Oba hailed the government for investing in the development of youths, thereby curbing unemployment.

UI produces first History first class graduate in 69 years

For the first time in 69 years, the University of Ibadan has produced its first graduate with a First Class honours degree in History.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, said Ozibo Ekele of the Department of History, was one of the 186 students who earned First Class degrees at the 2015/2016 convocation ceremonies, which began Monday in Ibadan.

Olayinka said 5,629 students graduated in various academic programmes from 12 faculties, including the Distance Learning Centre at the convocation.

According to him, 186 passed with first class honours, 1,538 finished with Second Class Upper, while 3,133 finished with Second Class Lower.

Similarly, 434 students finished with Third Class, while 81 others graduated with Pass degrees.

The Vice Chancellor admonished the graduates to be  good ambassador of the university, saying they should impact positively on their world.

“Our students would have graduated a long time ago but for the strike embarked upon by the academic and non-academic staff unions” he said.

According to him, the breakdown of the graduating list showed that 3.5 per cent and 28.6 per cent finished with First Class and Second Class (Upper) honours, respectively.

“I am aware that there has been strident public criticism of the large number of first class graduates from our universities.

“We are exceedingly proud of all Ibadan graduates.

“We see this phenomenon from the strategic point of view of input-process-output.

“The University of Ibadan has the most competitive mechanism for undergraduate admissions in the country.

“This has been attested to consistently by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, in which Ibadan is the only university in the country ranked among the topmost 1,000 universities in the world,’’ the VC said.

He was full of praises for Ekele for breaking the jinx as the department had never produced a first class student since inception.

“We warmly congratulate Ozibo Ekele, who is graduating today with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.6 out of a maximum of 7.0,’’ the VC said.

Meanwhile, giving a valedictory speech on behalf of others, the overall best graduating student in Law, Tolulope Ogunmodede, attributed their successes to hard work and prayers.

On his personal experience, Ogunmodede said that although he faced challenges during his academic pursuit, he was focused on his priorities.

He urged his fellow graduates to generate ideas that could make them entrepreneurs and not to trade their integrity for anything evil.

  • Graduate demands N5billion from UNIUYO, special convocation over delayed degree result

Graduate demands N5billion from UNIUYO, special convocation over delayed degree result

A graduate of accounting from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state,Uduakobong Peter Nquot has asked his alma mater to pay him the sum ofN5billion for delaying the release of his degree certificate for 10 years.

Narrating his ordeal to our correspondent in Uyo yesterday, Nquot saidhe was admitted into the University for a Degree Programme inaccounting through direct entry in the 2002/2003 academic year, but only got his degree result August this year.

His degree result which was sighted by the Nation in Uyo indicatesthat the Senate of the University of Uyo had approved Nquot’s resultsince 2008.

Speaking, Nquot lamented that the university omitted his name from the list of students who graduated in 2006/2007 batch, adding that he was denied the honour of graduating and participating in the convocation

    ceremony of that year.

Besides demanding for N5billion compensation for the wasted years andthe physiological trauma suffered over the years, Nquot with registration number 02/CE/BA/AC/007 has demanded that the university conducts a special convocation ceremony for him.

The aggrieved graduate of the UNIUYO said he was deceived for 10 years by the university into believing that he had failed some courses, and therefore was not eligible to be awarded a degree.

He said he did all his clearance and screening and was accordingly given a clean bill of health by all relevant departments of the school.

Nquot told the Nation that though the university did not publish results throughout his studentship in the school, he never failed any of his courses.

He said the University embarrassed him further when they told his parents that he had abandoned the programme mid-way, adding that for 10 years he was treated with disdain by friends and family as a result

    of the misinformation.

In a petition to the Vice-Chancellor of the UNIUYO dated 18th August, 2017, a copy which was obtained by our correspondent, Nquot stated that “I was deceived for many years that I had no result, and therefore could not graduate with my set of 2006/2007.

“All enquiries about my result proved abortive from the Department of Accounting, Faculty of Business Administration and the School of Continuing Education.

“In the year 2016, a staff of the University of Uyo in the School of Continuing Education deceived me that I had an outstanding course BNF 224, that I should apply to the Vice Chancellor for waiver in order to

    graduate.

“I promptly applied for a waiver “Application for Course Waiver’’ dated 12th May, 2016. In the course of following up my letter to the Senate, I saw my computed result from the Directorate of Academic

Affairs attached to my “Application for Course Waiver”.

Nquot said, “I was shocked to see that I had a Second Class Honours in Accounting and it became clear that something was being done to my result”.

He told the Nation that following a petition to the Vice-Chancellor of the University for his result to be released, he got a telephone on the 15th of August from Mrs. Akpan, Head of Exams Unit, requesting for

    his registration number.

“I met Mrs. Akpan on 24th August, 2017, who said “your result has been here for many years, you did not need to write all these letters” following which he obtained his degree result August this year.

When contacted the Registrar of the University, Mr. Aniediabasi Udoh absolved the institution of blame, and claimed Nquot never showed up to do his clearance for those number of years.

Udoh said Nquot only did his clearance in September hence the delay in the release of his result, adding that the ex-student also has issues with his course forms.

  • 23-yr-old Delta polytechnic graduate arrested for kidnapping, murder

23-yr-old Delta polytechnic graduate arrested for kidnapping, murder

A 23- year- old National Diploma (ND) graduate of the Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku, Obed Ikenna Oluchi yesterday confessed to have been lured into crime because of his desperation for money to repay his creditor.

He said he ventured into crime after he embezzled money meant for online sports betting at the betting house where he worked.

He made this confession yesterday at the Delta State Police Command where he was paraded alongside four others for attempted kidnapping and armed robbery.

According to him, “I work with Bet9ja.I just completed my ND from Delta State Poly Ogwashi-Uku. I studied Office Management and Technology. I was misled by a friend, because I needed money. A policeman came to our betting shop and he played a game worth N30, 000 which I only booked but did not bet because I thought it will not win. But the game won and the policemen wanted to claim his winnings worth over N250, 000. Because I did not bet the coupon I could not give him his winnings. So it was an attempt to find money that lured me into crime. The owner of the betting shop was angry when he found out what happened”.

Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim who briefed reporters said the suspect was a member of a gang that attacked Mr. Amobi Molokwu in front of his gate behind Cornerstone International School ,off Okpanam, but he narrowly escaped .

He said the hoodlums succeeded in robbing him of his RAV 4 Jeep with a number plate ASB 176 AV, his phones and other valuables, adding that “intelligence gathered technologically led to the arrest of Ignatius Obagha in whose possession the victim’s Infinix phone was recovered.”

Ibrahim said Ignatius Obagha following his arrest confessed and mentioned Obed Ikenna Oluchi, Ifeanyi Aniekwe,Ifeanyi Nwosu and Mustapha Ali a.k.a Bababyo as gang members .

Ibrahim said Obed Ikenna Oluchi was also involved in the robbery incident that occurred at Globe Supermarket, Okpanam on 27/7/2017 resulting in the murder of a lawyer Festus Ashiedu.

Obed Ikenna said he did not know he was going to use a gun and that he thought he was only going to help his friend carry the N1.5 million during the robbery at the supermarket.

He denied killing the lawyer, adding that the lawyer was struggling with their gang leader with the keys of his cars and he was shot in the process.

His words: “I was not the one who killed the man, it was the ring leader that killed the lawyer. Someone switched off the ignition of our getaway car so our leader wanted to snatch the car from him and was struggling with our ringleader for the car keys and was shot. Our attempt to rob the supermarket failed as the N1.5 million had already been moved before we got there”.

  • Two Chibok girls graduate from US high school

Two Chibok girls graduate from US high school

The determination of two Chibok schoolgirls who escaped from their Boko Haram abductors in 2014 to rebuild their lives is paying off.

Debbie and Grace, as they are simply called, graduated from a high school in Washington DC, the United States of America (USA) on Thursday after completing junior year (11th grade) and senior year (12th grade) at a prestigious private international school in the Washington metro area in America.

A U.S.-based human rights lawyer and the International Director of Education Must Continue Initiative, a Nigerian non-governmental organization involved in the care of the girls , Emmanuel Ogebe, confirmed the development in a statement yesterday.

Debbie and Grace were among the 57 girls who escaped from the terrorists soon after their mass April 2014 abduction at Government Girls State School,Chibok,Borno State.

They were, along with 10 others, subsequently sent abroad for the continuation of their education by the NGO which is run by victims of Boko Haram helping other victims to overcome the impact of the insurgency.

Ogebe said: “The class of 2017 was the 50th graduation of the school which was the first high school in America to win a prestigious President’s award last year. The Chibok girls were among only 21 students who graduated as a few international students were unable to graduate.”

In remarks during a celebratory reception, the Chibok girls thanked their host families and the NGO volunteers from EMC for supporting them to achieve their dreams. They particularly appreciated them for driving the girls daily to and from school for two years.

Mr. Ogebe appreciated the sacrifice of EMC founders, Mr. and Mrs.Paul Gadzama, who “flew at their own expense to witness the girls’ graduation after missing their own daughter’s graduation with a masters in Public Health (MPH) in Michigan just a few weeks earlier.”

He also thanked EMC’s “American volunteer Education Adviser, Deanna who helped obtain admission and scholarships to the exclusive $35,000 per year school for her role after their former school tried to take advantage of them. The girls had to repeat 11th grade after their initial school failed to meet up to its obligations”.

Mr. Ogebe said the girls won several awards, including for “Most hard-working student in English as Second Language 3”.

“This is an outstanding feat for Chibok girls especially given the fact that in Nigeria, most continue to speak in Hausa to the consternation of many Nigerians. This shows that our education model of immersion – placing the students in American homes – was immensely successful as they are now able to engage confidently, communicate effectively and blossom generally.

“This is why the girls in EMC’s US program are the most articulate Chibok girls anywhere in the world.”
