Create jobs, Ambode tells graduating students

The Best Graduating Student of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Miss Omotoyosi Fatogun, yesterday said her success was not by accident but by dint of hard work and divine grace.

Fatogun spoke in Ikorodu during the institution’s 26th convocation.

She appealed to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to make the institution  residential.

Fatogun was named the overall best graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA) of 3.81 in the School of Pure and Applied Sciences, Department of Science Laboratory Technology.

She said one of the paramount needs of the students was   hostel accommodation.

“I implore your Excellency sir, to consider making our institution a residential citadel of learning, as the challenges of the off-campus accommodation is sometimes overwhelming,” she said.

Fatogun also pleaded with Ambode to facilitate the construction of a pedestrian bridge at the LASPOTECH axis of the Ikorodu-Sagamu road.

The governor,  represented by his deputy, Dr Idiat Adebule, urged  graduates of polytechnics and colleges of technology in to develop their acquired skills to create jobs rather than be job seekers.

The economic climate of the country, he said, required young entrepreneurs who are determined to create and generate wealth.

The governor noted that   graduating students of the state’s tertiary institutions had been prepared through strategic initiatives including “Ready, Set, Work” initiative to look forward to life after school.

He pledged to continue to invest in the education sector to enrich the pool of human resources from the state’s institutions.

According to him, no society can develop without  investing in the education of its citizens, or providing an enabling environment for ideas to thrive.

The Rector, Mr Samuel Sogunro,  urged the graduands to utilise the theoretical, practical and entrepreneurial skills they acquired to enhance their skills as job creators.

About  6, 355 students graduated, out of which 211 earned distinctions;  1, 368,  upper credit, 3,505, lower credit and 1, 271,  pass.

  • Parents pray for graduating pupils

    Parents pray for graduating pupils

It was with passion and all the seriousness they could muster that parents prayed for their children during the Valedictory Service/ prize giving of Wellspring College, Omole in Lagos.

Each graduand, not minding that the school field was a little wet from the rain, knelt before his/her parents as they prayed for their success, protection and guidance as they move on from secondary school in search of university education and greener pastures.

The session, perhaps, provided the parents with an opportunity to beseech the Almighty to intervene in the lives of their children to right any wrongs they may have made in fulfilling their parenting role.

This may have also been influenced by the day’s exhortation delivered by Dr Peter Olonade, which focused on the vital role parents play in the development of their wards from birth.

Olonade said though God created man to achieve great feats, man is limited because of the activities of enemies within and without.  Contrary to the thinking that the enemies might be witches or demons, Olonade said they are most likely parents or relatives closely associated with the child (enemies within) or found in the larger society (enemies without).

Rather than worry about the enemies without, Dr Olonade warned parents not to be the enemies of their own children by their deeds and misdeeds.

He explained that it has been scientifically established that the intellect of children can be negatively affected if they are not well nurtured between 10 months and two years of age. He also added that negative emotional signals that children pick from their environment early in life can limit their learning.  As a result, he counseled parents to be mindful of the way they raise their children.

“As parents, we are also carriers of destinies.  Parents have to be prepared so we can prepare our children for the world out there so no destiny would be truncated,” he said.

Founder of the school, Mr Daniel Isimoya, said they take prayers seriously because it is the only way to insure the graduands for the future.

“They have been with us for the past six years.  We are happy we were able to finish with them and they are intact.  They are leaving us; we are not in a position to teach them again but we can talk to God,” he said.

Principal of the college, Mrs Oluwayemis Oloriade, counselled parents to make out time from their busy schedules to be with their children.

“Parents have a lot on their hands because these children are exposed to many things in their absence.  If we are available for them, we teach them the right thing.  A day should be devoted by the mother or father for the children.  If you don’t give them the right values, outsiders will give them the wrong values,” she said.

The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a billboard donated by the graduands to the school, and the presentation of gifts by the graduands to their parents.

The event also featured other activities, such as dances, dramas and special songs.

  • Graduating students’ day of festivity

The graduating students of the department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, have held their final year day. It was held after the students finished their final exam last week.

The event, which witnessed a large turnout of students, featured a lecture titled: “Life after graduation, the challenges ahead” by Dr Mu’awiya Jibirn, a lecturer in the department.

The class representative, Mubarak Ibrahim, thanked God for making their stay on campus successful.

The students were filled with joy. One of them, Suleiman Abubakar, said “I have waited for four years to witness today. There is no doubt that today marks a turning point in my life”.

The students later proceeded on an excursion to the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), Zaria. They were led by Prof S.A. Maigandi and Mallam Aliyu Muhammed. The objective of the trip was to expose the students to the practical aspect of artificial insemination. Their counterparts from the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, KSUST, Aleiro, also took part in the programme.

During the excursion, the students were exposed to the activities of different sections of the institute, including dairy, small and large ruminants and yoghurt processing.

  • Astymin to reward graduating pupils

    Astymin to reward graduating pupils

For graduating pupils who have performed exceptionally in their academics this session, it is reward time.

Astymin, a nutritional supplement and flagship brand of Fidson Healthcare Plc, plans to present prizes to over 200 of these scholars in the Southwest and Southeast.

The graduating pupils and their teachers and parents from over 200 public and private schools in the two regions, will be celebrated at an event organised by Fidson under its Astymin Brilliance Rewards (ABR) initiative.

General Manager, Marketing, Fidson Healthcare Plc., Mr Ola Ijimakin, said this year’s edition scheduled for July 19, at the Grange School, GRA, Lagos, holds promise of being more exciting than the previous three.

“The first three editions were great but this edition is ground breaking for several reasons: For the first time this year, we will be rewarding pupils from outside our traditional Southwest states.

In addition to the usual Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun states schools, this year’s event will also reward pupils from Delta, Anambra and Enugu states. Also for the first time, this year’s event will be rewarding the top 10 pupils from public schools in Lagos state. In this event also we will be having an unprecedented number of schools; over 200 in all”, he said.

Explaining the rationale for the event, Ijimakin noted that ABR is the brand’s biggest and most prestigious event apart from the various programmes it sponsors in schools.

“We also sponsor debates, inter-house sports, PTA meetings, Christmas parties and more. At the university level, Astymin is the main sponsor of the annual PANS national conference. The main social event the participants look forward to is the ‘AstyminNite’ and the ‘Miss. Astymin’ beauty pageant. Our biggest and probably the most prestigious event however, is the ABR,” he said.
