  • Hymnodia grand finale looms

Two more hymntestants have been hymnvicted (eliminated) in Stanza 11 of the Hymnodia reality show as the duo of Olumide Dada and Kenneth Ekhuemelo maintained their status as outstanding performers in the tussle for the ASAPH, the grand prize of the reality TV show, which will culminate on April 24.

The winner will also get a brand-new car and N5 million.

The hymnvictees, Uduakobong Akpan Jnr and Jemine Edukugho, who were on probation in the previous Stanza scored the least votes and had to leave.

Mr. Kufre Ekanem, Managing Director of Philosoville Limited, initiators of Hymnodia, said, “our theme for this stanza was hymns in added verses. The hymntestants had to create and graft additional verses to popular hymns of their choice but retaining the poetic metres, rhyming schemes and syllabic structures of the selected hymns. No hymntestant was put on probation in the final performance show.”

Elimination on the show is by public votes and the process is audited by the reputable firm of Gbenga Badejo& Co. For the final, the winner will be chosen via a combination of public votes and judges scores.

Hymnodia is a one-hour programme on Lagos Television (Channel 256 on DSTV, Channel 90 on GOtv and Channel 113 on Startimes) on Sundays with a magazine show on same channels on Thursday evening. It is also streamed live online via the LTV App available on the app store and on the dedicated YouTube channel, Hymnodiahq.

  • Osun school calisthenics:  Road to grand finale

By November 27, 2018, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s second term tenure will end as the Governor of Osun State .  One of the things his era will be remembered for is the re-introduction of Calisthenics. During school anniversaries, inter house sports, government official visits   to schools, it is now an easy exercise for school children to entertain their guests.

In major national and state anniversaries, such as Independence, State Creation and Children’s Day, Calisthenics display is the only event that often attracts spectators to the state city stadium.

It is among the leading ceremonies listed to usher in the Osun Governor-elect, Alhaji Gboyega Isiaka Oyetola, who will be inaugurated on November 27as the governor of the state.

Calisthenics was introduced by the Old Oyo State Governor, Chief Bola Ige in 1980/81. Aregbesola, in 2011, engaged two Calisthenics experts from Cuba to train 40 Physical and Health Education Instructors and Games Masters in Osun.

The training experience culminated in a display of “Osun at 21” Anniversary Celebration, August 27, 2012; the first ever major Calisthenics Display in the state with only a Nigerian precedence in the one put up by the Late Bola Ige, at the Liberty Stadium in the Old Oyo State during the 2nd Republic.

In the last six years, however, five other major calisthenics displays during various Anniversaries, and some other indoors displays, have taken place without the Cubans, under the tutorship of those they trained, including the spectacular Oodua World Children’s Day Celebration in 2013 graced by Late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade and the incumbent Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi along with Obas from Oduduwa lineage; and this year’s Children Day Celebration. Over 20,000 students from Middle and High Schools in more than 30 schools from Osogbo and Olorunda Local Government Areas have passed through the training exercises, which lasts up to 90 days in some instances.

In 2017, there was a new dimension with the introduction of the State-wide School Competition that allowed entry from all public schools in Osun. At this level, more than 40 schools across the state formed themselves into nine teams, training for two school terms, with elimination displays and Senatorial Stage championship and Prizes. The Grand Finale took place in November 2017 between teams representing the three Senatorial Districts as a part of activities to celebrate 3rd Year Anniversary of the Second Tenure of Rauf Aregbesola Government: over 5,000 students were involved. Apart from trophies, plaques and certificates of participation, N10,500,000 prize money was awarded by the state government for the sports facilities development of the participating schools.

By the 2018 state-wide competition, Aregbesola directed that private schools be allowed to participate. Of the 27 schools that registered, only 14 could make it to the elimination stage. After the assessment of their display performances between Monday 22 and 29 October, 2018. Glory Group of Schools, Okuku, a private school in Odo-Otin Local Government Area; St. Raphael College, Ikire, also a private school, and St. Micheal RCM, Ibokun, a public school came best three schools. They got N1 million and a trophy each while the first runners up, L.A. Middle School, Ilesha, Nahada Group of Schools Inisa and  Ife-Oluwa Middle School Osogbo got N750,000 each. The second runners up category, Osu Community Middle School, Osu, Olive Branches Schools, Osogbo, and Anglican Central Government Middle School. Ile-Ife got N500,000 each.

Other five schools in the last category; Anglican Middle/High School Ife Odan, Oba Laoye and Anasru-Islam Middle School, Ede, Oluorogbo Middle School, Ile-Ife, Shekinah Schools, Inisa and Osun North Anglican Diocesan Comprehensive High School, Agbeye got the consolation prize of N200,000 each.

This 2018 edition of the school competition will be concluded with a grand finale on November 21,  as part of the programmes of the inauguration of the  Oyetola administration. The champion will go home with a giant trophy and N2 Million, the runner-up with N1m and the third placed team will go away with N750,000.

Director, Department of Social Mobilisation and Grassroots Mobilisation and Guidance in the Office of the Governor,  Bayo Ojo, said the prize reward is among others, to encourage more participation and assist the schools in improving their sporting facilities in the quest of the government to institutionalise Calisthenics as part of school curricular, noting that playgrounds these days have become scarce resources in schools, especially private schools, a road block to the psychomotor domains objectives of education in Nigeria.

He said 27 schools indicated interest in the competition but 14 eventually made it past the preliminary training into the competition stage, leading to the emergence of the three finalists.

He said this year edition accommodated private schools to participate in the competitions, which has expanded the scope of the programme and solicited for the support of the private sector to sustain the programme describing it as worthy in building a better future for Nigeria.

Commissioner for Education, Omotunde Young, praised Governor Rauf Aregbesola for the initiative, adding that it requires unusual understanding and strong leadership to sustain a programme like calisthenics considering its huge cost and solicited for private sector intervention, especially considering that Calisthenics is one of the best brand-able sports for children.

According to him, in 2017 alone, over 6,000 students were engaged which has transformed their lives through discipline, mental alertness, precision, team work among other Omoluabi virtues acquired through the calisthenics game.

Whenever the government desires to stage calisthenics specifically for anniversaries, about 5,000 students are gathered as a “state team” from dozen contiguous schools in Osogbo and Olorunda Local Government Areas, with the government being responsible for their training, costume and welfare. In order to take the burden of refreshment and transport to the training ground away from their parents, N300 daily is given to each participant for upwards of 90 training days. Although the total monetary commitment, including the cost of costume for 5,000 persons, is huge, it is a direct investment into 5,000 families, apart from the beauty and benefits of Calisthenics. These are among several such social interventions and protection programmes are what have impacted on State of Osun to lower its crime and poverty levels to one of the very lowest in Nigeria.

“However,” explains Mr Omotunde-Young “with the new template of Statewide school competition, the schools, parents and the Parents-Teachers associations, are directly responsible, voluntarily, for the welfare and costumes of each of their teams. The State Training Crew trains the Physical Education Instructors and games masters of those schools.  This way, schools, private and public, has taken ownership and control of the process with government continually guiding and supporting the process with training knowhow, competition staging and prizes, while expecting brand and private sector support in the nearest future.”

The Head of Service, Olowogboyega, said in the history of the state, no governor understands the philosophy of sound and qualitative education like Governor Rauf Aregbesola who has demonstrated unprecedented commitment to educational development.

He said physical education is foundation of education and any society that lacks such is heading for doom and urged the teachers to sustain the institutionalisation of calisthenics in schools.

He said it is only Aregbesola that understands governance best among all the governors that have administered the state and the school curricular designed by his administration are the best in the country.

Olowogboyega commended the teachers for the recent strides in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) with 70 percent performance in English and Mathematics.

He said: “Aregbesola has brought the riddles of impossibility through calisthenics and it is the teachers that will solve this problem; your commitment and determination are important for the success of the programme.”

  • Obasanjo for grand finale

Grand patron of squash in Nigeria and former President, Olusegun Obasanjo will be the special guest at the grand finale of the 2018 Lagos International Squash Classics on Saturday at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Obasanjo who has been an ardent supporter of squash in Nigeria and a player himself has confirmed that he would grace the final to lend support to the organisers of the championship.

This was confirmed by the President, Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF), Boye Oyerinde, who said the presence of the former President attested to the quality of people in the sport.

“We are happy that our former President and a major supporter of the sport – Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has agreed to grace the grand finale of the Lagos International Squash Classics and this is a sign of good things to come. We hope that more people will come and identify with the sport,” Oyerinde said.

The NSF boss lauded the Lagos State Government for keeping faith with the tournament, adding that despite not staging the event in 2017, more players across the globe are still showing interest in coming to Lagos for the tournament. Oyerinde, however, lauded the local players for putting up good performance against their foreign counterparts.

“Quality of play is really high and the turnout is great despite not hosting in 2017 coupled with the reduction in prize money. For our players, it will afford them exposure and ranking points for those PSA registered players.

“Playing higher ranked players and doing quite well is the exposure our players need. They also need to play more matches like these to be able to rate their performance and understand that there is still work to do,” the NSF boss said.

The tournament enters crucial stage today as the quarter-final matches in the men and women events hold.

The $20,000 prize money championship is sponsored by the Lagos State Government and organised by the Lagos State Squash Association with technical support from the Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF).

The Lagos State Government yesterday promised Lagosians and visitors a world-class, spectacular finale for the ongoing One Lagos Fiesta holding simultaneously across the five divisions of the state. An array of A-list artistes, a new set of talented youths that emerged from the Lagos Grows Talent (LGT) competition and a spectacular display of fireworks are some of the “special effects” lined up for the countdown concert, which will usher in the new year and draw the star-studded fiesta to a close at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island, Agege Stadium, Ikorodu Town Hall, Badagry Grammar School and Epe Marina waterfront.

In a press statement signed by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the 8-Day, 5-Centre fiesta has again highlighted Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s passionate commitment to the promotion of art and culture, development of entertainment and tourism and using the creative sector to engage and empower the teeming youths in the state.

An estimated 300,000 people have thronged the five locations of the fiesta on a daily basis in a multi-dimensional arrangement that has made it Africa’s biggest end-of-the-year artistic event. “It is a fiesta that has provided direct, indirect and induced jobs to more than 6,000 people like musicians, dancers, technicians, stall owners, brand ambassadors, food and beverage sellers as well as security guards and transport services owners,” Ayorinde said.

He added that the Victoria Island zone for tomorrow’s grand finale will hold inside the sprawling Eko Atlantic City as against the Bar Beach end where the first seven days fiesta held since December 24. According to the Commissioner, the fiesta train is needed to move from Bar Beach to Eko Atlantic City in order to better appreciate the spectacular display of fireworks that will herald the New Year at exactly 12 midnight today.

He assured that adequate parking provision has been made for those coming in their cars while shuttle buses would be available at the Bar Beach end from 6pm to take guests into the Eko Atlantic venue where some of Nigeria’s biggest artistes like King Sunny Ade, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Falz the Bad Guy, Adekunle Gold, Simi, Humble Smith and Osupa Saheed, among others, will stage a world-class performance that will be broadcast live on various national and international television and online stations.

The statement conveyed the governor’s best wishes to Lagosians and urged them to continue in this orderly and peaceful manner till the end of the fiesta tomorrow.

The governor also expressed gratitude to NB Plc, South Energy X, Eko Atlantic, GTBank, Access Bank Plc, Eko Hotels Ltd, Pepsi, Dangote Group and JMG, among other sponsors and partners whose support has not only made the OLF 2017 incomparable, but has also further developed the creative economy of the state.

  • 27 to battle in Port Harcourt for ACTDF grand finale

27 to battle in Port Harcourt for ACTDF grand finale

All is set for the grand finale of the African Children Talent Discovery Foundation (ACTDF),  otherwise called ‘Unleash Your Talent 2017’, taking place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday, September 8, 2017.

The finale will feature 27 finalists, including aspiring musicians, actors, and dancers who will battle for the coveted prize of N1million naira worth of contract and cash prizes.

The event is scheduled to hold at the Hub Event Centre, Odili Road, Port Harcourt by 7pm.

Expected at the show, according to the organisers, are politicians, entrepreneurs, and star celebrities like Pete Edochie, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), Patience Ozokwor (Mama G), Segun Arinze and a host of others who have confirmed attendance.

According to the President of ACTDF, Engr. Noah Dallaji, the talent initiative is passion-driven and focused on reducing the level of poverty and unemployment in the country.

“When you give people a platform like this, and bring the stars around to encourage them, it gingers them instead of doing something negative. They say I could actually be celebrated like Ramsey Nouah, Faze, Idris Abdulkareem and others. So, that gives them the drive to do something positive with their lives,” said Dallaji, adding that, “What we intend to do is to develop and unleash those talents that would assist in the Nation development.”

Dallaji disclosed that the Foundation was to, initially, hold the grand finale on Friday, September1, but it became necessary to shift it by one week due to the Sallah holiday.

According to him, the programme is aimed at developing and discovering talents while integrating the participants into the mainstream of society for nation building. “Our primary objective is to showcase the talents of young people who are full of sadness because of their hopelessness but here is hope coming their way,” he observed.

The talent hunt designed into three categories will see winners go home with contract deals worth N1 million each plus cash prizes to advance their career in their areas of creativity.

“We have a winner from each of the categories and we are talking of three winners from singing, dance and acting. Each of these winners will follow us to the United States of America for exposure. Each of them will have a contract with regard to their field and they will have someone who will be there to sign them on,” he added.

Dallaji reiterated that ACTDF as an NGO has been doing a lot of humanitarian activities that have seen the less privileged being integrated into schools, taken care of through scholarship and other forms of developmental projects in communities where they need help.
