  • In times like this… let’s go green!

The reality of the times we live in is that the economy is not smiling. That is the lingo many of us have become used to. When translated from Yoruba, it is “the streets are not smiling”. Ask the man on the street how things are and you’ll hear him respond with “Igboro o rerin”.

When the federal government was ushered in with pomp and fanfare last May, many had their hopes renewed. There were sky high expectations from the citizenry that things would finally look up for the common man. Many were unrealistic in their expectations while a few who were not carried away called for cautious optimism.

One year down, the effects of the hard work by the various arms of government to restore the lost glory of the country is starting to be visible. This vindicates the overwhelming support that the majority of Nigerians gave to the barely one-year old government.

Government has set about its responsibility, tackling the issues at hand one by one. Despite the mudslinging and a lot of name calling by the set of people who have found themselves in the opposition, the government is taking bold steps and results are gradually showing in various sectors.

Sadly, however, the level of decay is not one that can be sorted with a quick fix. This has made government take decisions that are seen as unpopular but which in actual fact are going to bear fruits and make everyone happy in due course. Sacrifices have to be made to get the country working again. The effect of this is that there may be some drop in the standard of living of citizens of our great country, albeit for a short time.

The question to ask is what do we do in times like these? What do we do to make life a bit better for ourselves as individuals in these trying times?

The truth is that the present situation can make one tired of how everything is going. This means if the right motivation is not found to keep trudging on and making efforts, there is the tendency to just lie down and let life treat one as it deems fit.

To rise above the same song of “the streets are not smiling” that many of the citizenry sing, steps have to be taken. Each individual has to be able to think outside the box and make things happen for him or herself. There is the need for an extra income stream to shore up whatever comes into the purse. These, however, will work for those who see opportunities in the present economic travails.

In these days of irregular salaries, high inflation, very high unemployment rate and the like, those who have the will and drive to make a fortune out of the quagmire we have found ourselves can actually make it happen. How to make that happen is the main thing.

Governments at different levels now preach involvement in agriculture. They tell us that agriculture is the new crude oil and a money spinner. What those who are encouraging us to go into agriculture have failed to let many of us know is that it is a mixed grill. They have scratched the surface and have revealed gold; they have, however, not told many of us the process that led to the formation of the gold. Many have jumped into agriculture and have run out like someone chased by a colony of bees. Those who escaped are only lucky; because many have sunk everything they have in it and have come out with little or nothing to show for their investments.

A little background check will reveal that agriculture has different branches which are all profitable to those involved. There is the agronomy part which deals with plants and there is the very popular animal production aspect. Of the agronomy part, there is the food crop production, the ornamental plant production and there is the cash crop production. In the animal production aspect, there is poultry, piggery, ruminant animal production, aquaculture, feed milling and production aspect, among many others.Finance is an integral part of any agricultural enterprise. In fact, without financial inputs, nothing is possible in agriculture. It is not always very easy to go into cattle production in the southern part of the country. To go into the field of agriculture, there is the need for expertise.

There is the possibility of the investment into agriculture becoming the investor’s main income source as the years roll by. This is because of the fact that consumables will always sell, no matter the economic climate.

Many agricultural products are industrial raw materials. This goes to say that no matter the branch of agriculture that the main investment is made in, there is the generation of equally profitable by-products.

All I am saying is that care must be taken before investing in agriculture as attention shifts away from oil as the main source of income generation from the government.

    Lagos champions ‘green economy’ campaign

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Samuel Adejare, has called for the integration of tree planting and other environmentally-friendly mechanisms into national policy to enhance development.

He made the call at the third annual forum and seminar of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARKS) held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Lagos State, on Tuesday.

Adejare said the seminar was a forum to educate, inform and exchange ideas by the public and policymakers on how best to integrate tree planting into the national economy for sustainable development.

He said when tree planting is integrated into the national economy, the benefits would be fundamental to militating against the adverse effects of global warming and its attendant climate change impacts. It will also reduce poverty level through job creation and gainful engagement of youths; ensure production of food and other essential goods; ensure sustainability of agricultural production for export; ensure availability of woods, furniture and other allied products; and ensure environmental sustainability and improved socio-cultural value of greening.

Adejare stressed the state’s commitment to protecting the environment for the present and future generation through its pace setting programmes and actions, including the ‘Operation Green Initiative’, which has been lauded locally and internationally. He encouraged Nigerians to embrace good policy framework as regards tree planting, public awareness campaign and positive attitude toward all the ,state’s greening programmes.

He noted that despite challenges that may be encountered, regenerating the environment can only be done through collaborative efforts of the government and the private sector.

In this regard, he called on non-governmental organisations (NGOs), private organisations and government to partner to develop the state through holistic tree planting programmes and creating a green national economy.

The General Manager of LASPARK, Mrs Abimbola Jijoho-Ogun, said from a recent survey conducted by the agency, Lagos State citizens have called for the planting of more trees in the state.

Stating the benefits of tree-planting, she said: “It has been long established that trees absorb pollutants in our cities with measurable benefits to people’s health such as reducing asthma levels. Yet, trees also deliver a host of other extra ordinary economic and social benefits as source of foods, medicine and shelter for all.”

She said more empirical studies have shown that employees are more productive and have greater sense of job satisfaction in an environment adorned with trees. Also, she further said, trees have the potential to increase economic wellbeing of the people with properties and values boosted by their presence.

Jijoho-Ogun decried the population’s negative attitude to trees, saying fears over safety or disturbances to foundations and properties, which lead to felling of such trees, rather than its integration, were unfounded.

“The development of the space in which we live and work represents an opportunity for change that may not be repeated for many years. Making the right decision at this pivotal moment can influence peoples’ sense of place, health and wellbeing for generations,” she said.

The LASPARK boss encouraged Nigerians to think positively about trees and to become advocates for greening and beautiful environment.

Prof Musiliu Onilude of the department of agriculture, University of Ibadan and Dr Julius Agboola, an environmental scientist, were major speakers at the seminar.

    I recommended Keshi’s sack -Green

NFF Disciplinary Committee Chairman, Christopher Green has further revealed that his committee recommended the sacking of former Super Eagles gaffer, Stephen Keshi because of his arrogance and lack of respect for constituted authorities.

The former Technical Committee Chairman in a chat with Sportinglife in Port Harcourt, said: “I personally recommended the sack of Stephen Keshi because he has no respect for the nation. He has no remorse whatsoever for any of his actions. You need to see how he presented himself when he appeared before our committee. He showed no remorse, and never believed he did anything wrong. So I had to recommend his sack”

The Rivers State FA Chairman called on all stakeholders to rally round the present board of the NFF to ensure that they take the country’s football to another level

“We need to support the President of NFF Amaju Pinnick in his quest in repositioning Nigeria football, he has a vision for the country’s football, and we should support him”.

On the Nigeria League, the NFF Executive Committee Member said: “We can see that there is a lot of improvement in the League, and this can be buttressed by the number of away wins that have been recorded in the season, and the breaking of the 13- year-record of Kano Pillars in Kano. That is good for our football, and everyone can see that you can win anywhere, as long as you play well. We need to praise the LMC and everyone involved in the administration of the League” he said.

  • Green fears for Sharks, Dolphins

    Green fears for Sharks, Dolphins

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) executive committee member Chris Green has raised concerns about the possible relegation of Sharks and Dolphins, two clubs close to his heart.

Dolphins are in 18th position on the Nigerian Premier League table while Sharks are in last place, with both clubs facing the very real possibility of suffering the drop this term.

Green, though, still hopes to see improvements in the form of both teams as the league nears its halfway mark.

“I grew up in Port Harcourt as a fan of Sharks where I also served as club secretary for quite a while,” Green told SuperSport.

“During my time as Rivers State sports commissioner, Dolphins achieved quite a lot, so I am naturally quite attached to both clubs. Seeing both clubs suffer this much this early in the season makes my heart bleed and it’s my opinion that urgent measures must be taken to stop the rot.”

Green faults Ivorian Federation over Keshi

CHAIRMAN of the Nigeria Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee, Christopher Green has said the Ivorian Football Federation should have reached out to the NFF before shortlisting the Super Eagles coach as one of the candidates to coach their senior national team.

Green, also a member of the NFF Executive Committee, added that Stephen Keshi must respect his employers as he is under contract.

“The practice is very simple,” he said. “Even for players, for as long as you have a contract, you must respect your employers,” Green said of Keshi.

“And if you (Cote D’ Ivoire) want to talk to a coach, you have to obtain permission from the team before you are allowed to talk to the coach,” Green said of the Ivoirian Football Federation.

The NFF are yet to say what their next line of action will be if Keshi is found ‘guilty’ of applying to coach the Elephants of Cote D’ Ivoire, but feelers from the Glass House have it that they may show the 53-year old former Super Eagles captain the door.

Green had earlier told News24 they are ‘investigating’ Keshi, after the Ivorian Football Federation listed him as one of the applicants to replace Herve Renard as coach of the Elephants.

Agric Bank rolls out Green Cash Card

To make life more meaningful, enable access to its facilities by clients and rural farmers, the Bank of Agriculture(BOA) has introduced a Green Cash Card that will give farmers wherever they are access to its facilities.

Disclosing this to The Nation in an exclusive chat at the bank’s corporate headquarters in Kaduna, the Executive Director, Wholesale Finance, Alhaji Ahmadu Haruna Waziri, said the Green Cash will  key into the cashless policy whereby any of the bank’s clients can transact businesses with minimal cash flow.

According to him, it is e-banking system whereby all the clients can do their business with the bank in a fast and secured way within a twinkle of an eye “You can use your mobile phone to transact all your businesses. You can also use internet transaction in addition to other e-banking businesses. It is a platform for us to provide our client a viable service at the remotest village you can get mobile telephone. People who are dealing in little flow of cash can easily be reached.”

Waziri pointed out that “This Green Cash will allow them to access their fund in any part of the country even at the remotest village. We have sent marketers to the field to sensitise the people on the need to key into this concept. Now, we are at the process of recruiting agents that will serve as intermediary between the bank and the farmers. The agents will act as outlet to the services of the bank.”

He explained that each agent will act like a branch and any customer can visit the agent either to deposit cash or withdraw cash without going to the banking hall. “We have different level of agents and the amount they can deal with. Each branch of the bank will coordinate all the activities of the agents”

The renowned agribusiness expert said  the first recruitment of the agents will be between one and two per each of the 774 local governments and will be saddled with the responsibility of transacting business with the bank clients without going to ATM stands.

“The idea is that cash can be transfered to our customers through their phone number. The handling of the physical cash will be minimal. Outside the eco system, all other transactions can be done on the phone. The agent will be categorized into silver, bronze and gold the amount they are handling will determine their category.

Waziri also stated that the bank is embarking on enlightenment campaign at the grassroots to sensitise  the people on the advantage of the Green e-wallet, adding that when the system is fully operational, it will ease the tension of carrying cash all about for businesses.

“We are backing it with the type of technology they already know like POS, ATM system etc. You can approach the agent and demand for your balance free of charge as long as you are in the Green Card system, he will oblige. It will also provide other services like buying of air time, utility bills etc”

… FA chairmen rally for embattled NFF chief

The State Security Service on Tuesday quizzed the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Aminu Maigari and two other principal officials of the federation.

The other affected officials are – the NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu, and the Chairman of the federation’s technical committee, Chris Green.

Maigari is expected to preside over the NFF general assembly slated for Tuesday, africanFootball.com reports.

Meanwhile, no less than 35 states Football Association chairmen defied threats by security operatives and marched to the SSS office in solidarity with Maigari.

“The FA chairmen refused to be cowed despite threat by heavily armed policemen that they will shoot them down if they leave the premises of the Chida hotel, Abuja,” an eyewitness told africanFootball.com.

“They left for the SSS office and had made it clear that Maigari will preside over Tuesday’s congress despite this open intimidation.”

World football governing body, FIFA, has already stated Maigari will lead the NFF congress.

This latest development comes few hours after the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim had resolved that a non-elective congress takes place in Abuja on Tuesday.

The congress is expected to design a road map for elections into the NFF executive committee.

NFF chiefs Green, Yusuf Ahmed unbanned

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials, Chris Green and Yusuf Ahmed, have had their suspension lifted by the NFF appeals committee.

Both officials were suspended by the NFF executive committee on Thursday for “anti-board activities” among other charges, but on Friday, the appeals committee headed by Eddy Mark upheld their appeals.

“The appellants having made out a good case to nullify and reverse the decision of the executive committee, the aforementioned decision is hereby set aside and the appellants are free to resume their place and duties as executive members of the Nigeria Football Federation board,” stated the appeals committee,

The appeals committee said the suspension of the excos was not on the agenda, the officials were not given formal notice of their offences and there was a serious breach of the appellants’ right to fair hearing.

The committee further disposed that only six executive committee members sat to take the decision to suspend their colleagues when Article 36(1) of the NFF statutes clearly stipulated that it required a minimum of eight members to take such a decision.

The committee also berated the executive committee for violating the NFF statutes.

“This (violation) portends grave danger for the administration of football in Nigeria,” said the appeals committee.

“Let us avoid those things that will portray our country in bad light and as a people that are incapable of managing our affairs for good. The world community of football is watching us.”
