  • Professor Emeritus Dare greets The Nation on ‘rich harvest of awards’

    EMERITUS Professor of Journalism Olatunji Dare yesterday congratulated The Nation‘s team on the  newspaper’s excellent outing at last year’s prize-giving of the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence DAME) and the Nigeria Media Merit Awards (NMMA).

    In a statement from his base in Peoria, Illinois, United States of America (USA), Dare, who is The Nation‘s Editorial Adviser, said:   “As in years past, I have again the pleasant duty of congratulating the entire management, editorial staff, production team and ancillary personnel of the NATION Newspapers on another excellent outing at the annual prize-giving of the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence DAME), and the Nigeria Media Merit Awards (NMMA).

    “At DAME, The NATION won two prizes outright, and was adjudged runner-up in nine of 15 categories, including Editor of the Year, Newspaper of the Year, and Informed Commentary categories.  In the remaining six categories, it was named second runner-up.

    “Our Associate Editor and star writer, Olatunji Ololade consolidated his prize-winning by winning yet another trophy on the way to becoming the first person in DAME’s history to garner eight prizes in five different categories.

    “Another star correspondent, Joseph Jibueze brought his trophies for the Judicial Reporting category to five, a record.”

    The emeritus professor added: “If the overall showing fell a tad beneath our expectations, we compensated for that by a much more emphatic outing at the NMMA.

    The NATION won the crown jewel of the Awards, the Babatunde Jose Prize for Newspaper of the Year, beating last year’s winner, The Punch, as well as Guardian Newspapers.  It also won four other awards outright.  Editor Gbenga Omotoso was named runner-up in the Editor of the Year category.

    The NATION was adjudged runner up in 16 categories.

    “Together, these awards indicate powerfully that we have kept faith with an attentive audience that            has come to expect only the best of us and that we have maintained our place in the front ranks of journalism and newspapering in Nigeria.

    “We owe our sustained distinction to Management’s commitment to backing the publication of a superior with the necessary resources despite the great challenges facing the industry, and to the continual dedication of our editors, columnists and staffers to their craft and to public service.

    “The task of attaining greater heights in 2019 begins today.  A Happy New Year to all.”

  • Buhari greets Jonathan, Attah, Ezeife on birthdays

    PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has joined Nigerians in sending warm greetings to former President Goodluck Jonathan as he turns 61 today.

    He also felicitated with former Akwa Ibom State Governor Obong Victor Attah as well as former Anambra State Governor Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife. They turn 80 today.

    The President believed the life journey of the former president remains an inspiration to every young Nigerian of the possibilities that await anyone willing to learn, work hard and participate in making the country great.

    The President, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, also congratulated Jonathan on the publishing of his memoir, My Transition Hours, which will be launched as part of ceremonies marking his birthday.

    He encouraged Nigerians to follow same example of sharing their experiences in writing.

    The President prayed that the almighty God will strengthen Jonathan, grant him longer life and bless his family.

    He also joined family members, friends, professional colleagues and political associates of Obong Attah in celebrating the many years of service to God and humanity, and obvious impact of his leadership style.

    As an architect with versatile and global working experience, the President, in a statement by Adesina, hailed the strategic thinking and planning of Obong Attah and his cabinet in shaping the infrastructural development of Akwa Ibom, which he said still remained one of the most hospitable and attractive states for tourists in the country.

    Buhari affirmed that Obong Attah’s contribution to architectural growth has been most remarkable, and historical, especially when he served as President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects.

    He prayed to the almighty God for longer life, good health and more wisdom for the former governor to continue serving the country and humanity.

    Buhari, in another statement by Adesina, joined family, friends and political associates of Ezeife in celebrating the milestone, which has been lined with many notable achievements, both at state and national levels.

    As the for governor turned 80, the President believed Ezeife’s investments in human capital and laying of a foundation for a vibrant economy in Anambra State would be remembered and cherished by posterity.

    He prayed for longer life, good health and strength for Ezeife.

  • Excitement greets Buhari’s branded campaign wristbands

    ALL Progressives Congress (APC) candidate President Muhammadu Buhari now has new campaign wristbands.

    The wristbands were shared at The Eagle Square, Abuja, venue of the party’s recently held primaries to highlight an early start to his campaign.

    Excitement greeted the distribution of the branded wristbands, as 7,000 APC delegates gathered to endorse Buhari for a second term at the Square last Saturday.

    The branded wristbands were distributed by Directors of the Good Governance Ambassadors of Nigeria (GOGAN) and the Buhari Unity Band (BUB) namely, Hajia Zainab Mohammed, Dr. Abayomi Oyekoya and Mr. Yinka Oladunjoye.

    A statement signed by the Director, Communication and Media, BUB, Dr. Kunle Hamilton, said printed leaflets titled: “Ahead 2019 Presidential Election”, were also distributed along with the Buhari wristbands.

    Billionaire business mogul Chief Felix Idiga is the chairman and national coordinator of GOGAN and BUB.

    The statement also said APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Secretary to the Federal Government, Boss Mustapha, were the first to wear the wristbands. Mustapha then distributed the bands to the party’s hierarchy.

    APC Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, wore the new wristband, which bears an arty image of Buhari and showed the president, who also wore one with excitement.

    Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Governor Nasir El Rufai equally shared Buhari’s excitement.

    The new wristband, which thousands of people at the APC presidential converge squabbled for, has the inscription, “Buhari for one more term; Nigerians’ 1st Choice” plus APC’s logo. The four versions of the wristband made available at the Eagle Square were in English, Yoruba, Ibo and Hausa.

  • Okorocha greets BBN winner

    Imo state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has congratulated  the winner of the Big Brother Naija Reality Show, Mr. Miracle Igbokwe.

    Miracle is an indigene of Imo state.

    The governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary,  Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, described Miracle, as a good ambassador of the state, adding  that he was not surprised that he ended up being the winner of the show.

    He commended him for conducting himself well for the 12 weeks the entertaining event lasted.

    The governor disclosed that the State Government would give Miracle the attention he deserves and commended him for the good remarks he made about the free and qualitative education in the state.

    He equally commended the organizers of the event for coming up with such youth  oriented show.

    The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated former Governor Adebisi Akande on the celebration of his 79th birthday today.

    A statement yesterday by the party’s Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi, said: “We join families and friends to honour our great leader and use this occasion to also celebrate some of his grand achievements.

    “It is to the credit of Papa Akande that APC was nursed until it was given birth to in 2013. We had to depend on his wisdom and political sagacity in putting together parties of different orientations into one cohesive family that we are today.

    “Besides, we celebrate his uncommon wisdom, which was not appreciated by some, at the time he was governor, in placing this state in a firm foundation, administratively.

    “Also, Papa Akande will be treasured for his statesmanship, which cuts across party lines and has brought him to the forefront of national leadership.

    “As Papa turns 79 today, we wish him many more glorious years of selfless service to the state of Osun and the country.

    “Many happy returns of this day.”

    Afenifere chieftain Senator Ayo Fasanmi has felicitated with President Muhammadu Buhari on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

    Fasanmi, in a statement, laded the president for his courage in fixing Nigeria and prayed the President “will celebrate 92 my age and many more years”.

    He also prayed that before the end of his tenure, he would have cause to say that “he came, he saw and he conquered”.

    “As he celebrates his 75th birthday, I wish him many happy celebrations with good health and wisdom,” the statement added.

    Buhari greets Soul Winning Chapel overseer at 86

    President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with Reverend (Dr) Moses Iloh, General Overseer of Soul Winning Chapel, on the occasion of his 86th birthday celebration on February 13, 2016.

    President Buhari, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, joined Rev. Iloh’s family, friends, associates and other well-wishers in rejoicing with him as he marks another notable milestone in a fulfilled life of service to God and humanity.

    The President commended him for his numerous contributions to nation building and development exemplified through his pastoral teachings which have brought succour to the less-privileged members of the society.

    He also extolled Dr Iloh’s endearing humility and integrity and for being a great inspiration to many Nigerians as a philanthropist, labour leader, humanist, footballer and cleric.

    The President prayed Almighty God to grant the elder statesman more years of good health, strength and prosperity.

    Meanwhile, fiery social critic and reformer, Pastor (Dr) Moses Iloh, has said that the hard times which the nation is presently going through demands a committed and visionary leader of President Buhari’s stature, to successfully take the economy out of the wood.

    In a statement marking his 86th birthday, the General Overseer, Soul Winning Chapel, Ebute Metta Lagos, described Buhari’s presidency as a product of Divine intervention, and a telling signal that God has answered the prayers of the teeming mass of concerned Nigerian’s especially the poor.

    “I tremble to contemplate the consequences, if a figure of lesser stuff and caliber than Buhari, had clinched the Presidency. It would have been suicidal; it would have spelt a socio-economic chaos of unprecedented proportion. The crime situation would have been so terrible, and the nation would have been under a terrible security siege. It would have triggered a chain of reactions, the end of which no one can foretell, said the founding President, Eclectic Network, a socio-political pressure group.

    He commended Buhari over the on-going probe; asking him to pursue the exercise to the logical conclusion, adding that it’s a right step to ignite an ethico-moral revolution, that will entrench the culture of probity and accountability.

     

  • Vatican greets Muslims

    The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has released its annual Ramadan message to the world Muslims, calling for genuine fraternity between followers of the two faiths to promote mutual respect and friendship.

    “Christians and Muslims are brothers and sisters in the one human family, created by the One God,” the message, released by the president and secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, was quoted by Catholic World News.

    “We thank the Almighty for what we have in common, while remaining aware of our differences,” they continued.

    “We perceive the importance of promoting a fruitful dialogue built upon mutual respect and friendship. Inspired by our shared values and strengthened by our sentiments of genuine fraternity, we are called to work together for justice, peace and respect for the rights and dignity of every person,” the Vatican said.

    Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos Central  Senatorial District, has congratulated  prominent newspaper columnist and journalism teacher  Prof. Olarunji Dare at 70, saying the birthday is a landmark worth celebrating.

    “Your sterling achievement in the fields of academics and journalism will continue to inspire many towards aspiring excellence,”  Mrs. Tinubu  wrote in a birthday felicitation letter she personally signed.

    ”As a newspaper columnist, you have contributed in no small measure towards enlightenment and understanding of social and developmental issues in our society,” she said.

    Wishing Prof. Dare many more years of good health and fulfilment, Senator Tinubu noted that attaining “the septuagenarian age is a testament of God’s abiding grace” towards the celebrator.

    President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday identified with former Lagos governor and Action Congress of Nigeria (AC N) National leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who turns 61 today.

    In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President prayed for many more years of fulfilment and God’s continued guide, guard and prosperity for Tinubu.

    The statement reads: “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has felicitated with former Lagos State governor and chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, (ACN), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the occasion of his 61st birthday anniversary which comes up tomorrow.”

    In a letter to Asiwaju Tinubu, on behalf of himself and the Federal Government, the President said: “It is my prayer that Almighty God continues to guide, guard and prosper you even as He blesses you with many more years of fulfillment.”
