Group opposes bill seeking to grant citizenship to non-indegene

An organization, The Society for Odua Socio-Cultural Renaissance, has opposed a new bill introduced by the Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, which seeks to grant indigene status to individuals who have resided in a state for ten years or acquired it through marriage.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of the group stakeholders expressed deep concerns about the implications of the bill, arguing that indigeneity is an ancestral and cultural identity that cannot be legislated. According to the society, while citizenship is determined by legal frameworks, indigeneity is tied to lineage and heritage, passed down through generations.

“To be reconfigured as an indigenous person in any of the six geopolitical zones one your parents must come from these zones. Any attempt to redefine indigeneity through legal means undermines the sacred connection between people and their ancestral lands,” the statement read.

The group further described the bill as part of ongoing efforts to dilute ethnic identities under the pretext of fostering national unity. They warned that such an approach is not only flawed but could pose significant risks to the country’s cultural and historical foundations.

“The Yoruba identity, like those of other ethnic groups, is deeply cherished and integral to the lives of its people. Any effort to erase or alter these identities will be met with firm resistance,” the organization stated.

With Nigeria being home to over 250 ethnic groups, the Society for Odua Socio-Cultural Renaissance emphasized the importance of protecting indigenous identities to prevent cultural erosion and potential disintegration of the nation. The group argued that redefining indigeneity could lead to further fragmentation and conflicts, rather than fostering unity.

They also expressed concern that granting indigene status based solely on residency or marriage could lead to a loss of traditional structures, where indigenous communities play a key role in governance, land ownership, and cultural preservation. The group insisted that legal recognition should not override deeply rooted traditions that define Nigeria’s ethnic diversity.

“Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities, Yorubaland, Hausaland, Igboland, Ijawland, Tivland, Kanuriland, and others are the bedrock of its cultural heritage. State creation and the rhetoric of ‘One Nigeria’ cannot erase these identities,” the statement added.

The group called on lawmakers to reject the bill, urging them to uphold the sanctity of indigenous identity. According to them, the unity of Nigeria must be built on mutual respect and the protection of the rights of all ethnic groups.

They further urged traditional rulers, cultural organizations, and civil society groups to speak out against any policy that seeks to alter the essence of indigeneity in Nigeria.

Group seeks transparency in Nigeria’s oil pricing regime

Amid the confusion over the cost of fuel in the country, a group, the Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has advocated for transparency and accountability in the handling of issues in the nation’s oil industry to ensure fair pricing and product availability.

CASER said although the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) has been working to fulfil its statutory obligations as the supplier of last resort for security reasons, it requires the involvement of all stakeholders to address the challenges plaguing the sector.

CASER’s Executive Director, Frank Tietie made the group’s position public while unveiling the Energy Security Coalition (ESC), intended as a network of Nigerian-based Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that will operate autonomously and impartially in the Nigerian oil and gas sector as an advocacy group.

Tietie said ESC’s goal is of significant value to the Nigerian people because it plans to promote understanding, transparency, and functional utility of Nigeria’s petroleum resources to the benefit of all Nigerians.

He added: “The coalition was established in response to the pressing issues related to the availability and pricing of premium motor spirit (PMS) in Nigeria.

“PMS (petrol) is a key driver of the Nigerian economy and has been a major topic of discussion, laden with claims and counterclaims that could negatively and significantly affect the well-being of people across all social classes.

“The urgency of these issues necessitates immediate action and the need for accurate information.

“However, despite the challenges it is facing, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd  (NNPCL) has been working to fulfil its statutory obligations as the supplier of last resort for security reasons, as mandated by Section 64 (m) of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) which is crucial in providing national energy security and economic stability for Nigeria.

“Therefore, the Energy Security Coalition is committed to exploring collaborative approaches to ensure an informed citizens-driven intervention in the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

“This intervention, engaging all stakeholders, has the potential to give the welfare and interests of all Nigerians the highest priority in the implementation of the policies and programmes of the Federal Government of Nigeria and its agencies in the petroleum sector.

This work offers hope for a brighter future for Nigeria.

“The coalition, therefore, extends a warm invitation to all well-meaning NGOs across Nigeria to join its collective stance in taking active positions on all issues in the oil and gas sector.

“Your participation is crucial, particularly regarding the correct pricing of petroleum products, the transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), the menace of oil theft and all other ancillary matters in the petroleum industry that would affect Nigeria’s national security, the economy and well-being of Nigerians.

“The task of finding solutions to Nigeria’s myriad problems requires collective efforts and engagement. As a coalition of civil society organizations, we seek a transparent and well-intentioned governance regime for the petroleum industry.

“This is for the benefit of all Nigerians, including the interests of the Federal Government and the NNPC, which now operates as a profit-driven private entity but still has statutory obligations to ensure energy security for the Nigerian economy,” Tietie, who disables as the Convener of the ESC, said.

    • ’Fit to replace Lalong’

A group, Plateau Progressive Movement (PPM), has urgrd President Bola Tinubu to appoint Chief Amos Gizo to replace former Labour Minister, Simon Lalong in the Federal Executive Council.

The group said Gizo is the right person to fill Plateau’ State’s position in the cabinet

PPM, a group within the Plateau State All Progressives Congress (APC), has written an Open Letter to President Tinubu on its request.

Lalong recently resigned as to take the Plateau South Senate seat after the Court of Appeal sacked PDP candidate, Napoleon Bali, and ordered the electoral commission to retrieve his certificate of return.

In the letter signed by its Chairman, by Mr Danjuma Song, Secretary, Alhaji Zakari Iliyasu, and eight other members, the group said Gizo would be the right choice.

The letter reads in part: “Mr President, we are extremely concerned about the delay in the appointment of a minister from Plateau State to replace the immediate past minister from the state, Simon Lalong, who resigned late last year.

“We are also your die-hard supporters, who are deeply concerned about the need for you to make the right choices to enable you to succeed in office, in order to bequeath indelible legacies for posterity, which you have already started, so that we can equally thump our chests and share the bragging rights.

“We are also making this passionate and patriotic appeal to you as crucial members of the APC’s 2023 Renewed Hope Campaign Agenda at the National, State and Grassroots levels, having served as a members of the party’s pre-election and election Planning and Strategic Committees at various levels.”

The group, urged the President to micro-zone the appointment of Lalong’s replacement to Plateau Central Senatorial Zone, which has unfairly produced just one minister in 25 years, since 1999.

“It is noteworthy that Lalong is from Plateau South Senatorial Zone, which has produced six ministers since 1999, namely Pauline Tallen (twice), Fidelis Tapgun and his sister, Josephine Tapgun, Solomon Dalung and, lately, Lalong.

“Besides, out of the six ministers produced by Plateau South Senatorial Zone in the past 25 years (the zone has many ethnic groups), all of the above appointees are from Shendam, Lalong’s Goemai ethnic group, except for Solomon Dalung, a Taroh man, from Langtang South LGA.

“Like Lalong’s Plateau South, Plateau North Senatorial Zone, on the other hand, has similarly produced five ministers within the same period: “Damishi Sango, Mark Aku, Musa Izam, Dasuki Nakande and Sarah Ochekpe, and they were all picked from different ethnic groups in the zone, namely, Ganawuri, Rukubu, Afizere, Hausa-Fulani and Birom, in that order.”

The group said Plateau Central Senatorial Zone, on the other hand has only produced Bagudu Hirse as minister since 1999, in spite of its returning massive votes for APC in all elections.

It added: “Plateau Central Senatorial Zone also has some of the APC’s founding fathers, major financiers and prominent chieftains, who are Tinubu’s die-hard political supporters, who the ministerial cap fits, Gizo towers above them all.

“There is no need to beam the ministerial searchlight any further.

The PPM would like to boldly and unequivocally suggest, without any sentiments, that you appoint Chief Gizo, who hails from Kanam LGA in the Central Zone.

“He towers far above the available ministerial options, based on his unmatched political pedigree and trajectory of experience, loyalty, maturity and competence.

“Mr President, recall that Gizo was at various times the Plateau State Chairman of your party, the defunct Action Congress (AC), as well as when the party was rechristened as the Action Congress of Nigeria ACN, during which he was elected as the National Coordinating Chairman, Forum of CAN Chairmen in Nigeria.”

Gizo was the Director-General/Coordinator, Malam Nuhu Ribadu for President 2011 Presidential Campaign, when Ribadu, now National Security Adviser (NSA), was the Presidential Candidate of the then ACN.

Also, Gizo was the National Patron and Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of numerous support groups of the Asiwaju for President 2023 Campaign and was also Plateau State APC.

He was a governorship aspirant in the buildup to the 2023 Governorship Election.

According to the group, Gizo has a support base that cuts across party lines, as he earns a lot of respect across main political parties in Plateau like the PDP, Labor Party and other parties.

It stressed: “A political juggernaut of sorts, who combines his rare gift of an uncanny ability to combine politics and diplomacy, Gizo will leverage his requisite experience and capacity to strengthen the APC in the state by bringing together aggrieved members to form a strong united party front.

“He will also bring back those that defected, take back the state from PDP in 2027, and engender the much needed but elusive unity and peace in Plateau State, if given the ministerial slot.”

Alleged Extortion: Group dismisses online media reports, says it’s misleading

The management of the foundation, Hope for the Needy and Skills Empowerment Foundation, popularly known as Hope For Nigeria (HFN), conveyed their astonishment regarding a news article released by an online publication, denouncing it as entirely untrue and contrived.

In a statement signed by Kerry Kenu Sholaye, the president of the foundation, it is affirmed that the news report titled “Exposed: NGO Extorting Nigerians in the Name of the Federal Government” was entirely based on malicious intent and is highly misleading.

Sholaye also criticized the reports as a biased presentation and evident inexperience of a junior reporter, one-sided fabrication without seeking input from HFN’s management or verifying the facts before publication.

He urged for the swift retraction of the story. Additionally, he pointed out that beyond its one-sided nature, the news story was clearly designed to tarnish the organization’s reputation.

HFN has consistently dedicated its efforts and resources to uplift and support Nigerians through empowerment initiatives.

Sholaye explained that the N1,050.00 funds being paid to the organization which is now N1,250.00, were only by those who intend to work with the organization, and therefore voluntary and not compulsory or extortion.

The Foundation also tagged (“Our Organization” “We”), stating that the funds, N1,050.00, “being paid to the organization which is now N1,250.00 were paid only by those who intend to work with the organization.

The payment, according to HFN is a subsidized and one-time payment for a dedicated Salary Account and Agent Banking Account with Access Bank Plc, for ID Card, and Biometric Data processing.

“The story termed it as extortion but everyone who pays the sum would work during the process and would be paid a minimum of fifty thousand naira (N50,000). The dedicated salary/Agent account would be credited with a minimum of N1,075.

“The arrangement is an internal one and our organization never stated that the Federal Government instructed us to collect that sum. The organization needed to set up a structure of fifty thousand workers to ensure the process of data collation is accomplished”, Mr. Sholaye stated.

He added: “The process of Data Capture for Workers for each State has commenced and everyone who pays the above-stated one-time fee and works with the existing structure would be duly remunerated.

“Our organization did not receive any call (s) or WhatsApp messages, or any mail to our Head Office or asked to respond before the story was published. The official email of the organization was not contacted either. Our contacts are open to such clarification with all the available channels, Our Organization is left baffled at the article claiming we could not be reached”, he queried.

He also explained that the National Social Register process was facilitated by the Federal Government of Nigeria. “This is clearly stated on the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office’s (NASSCO), website.

“Our Organization never made any move without informing the NASSCO. Our activities update and details contained in the recent press conference were mailed to the NASSCO Head office on the 22nd of September, 2023 and we have an acknowledgment copy handy.

“The news report claimed that on our website we said we have 210,000 Staff. We want to categorically state that that information is false and the Statistics contained about us on the page of our website are permutations and not actual existing figures. “The organization has a detailed breakdown of its operations to back the Statistics contained about us on the page of the website. A group under the aegis of Noimot Salako-Oyedele (NSO) Frontiers has impressed on the Economic Transition Committee of Ogun State on the need to urgently rescue the gateway state from what it described as the shackles of misappropriation/mismanagement of resources and misplaced priorities caused by the present administration in the state.

In a statement issued by the Director of Communications and Strategy of the NSO Frontiers, Muhammed Mustapha, the organisation urged the team which is raised, according to it, from among seasoned professionals of diverse fields to justify the confidence and trust reposed on them by the residents of Ogun State via the governor-elect.

The organisation disclosed that having dispassionately perused composition of the economic transition team being put together by the governor-elect, its earlier belief and conviction that Ogun State would undergo rapid paradigm shift in terms of socio-economic and political transformation to join league of buoyant states in Nigeria has been reinforced.

The statement also appreciated the governor-elect and his deputy for honouring NSO Frontiers by appointing Ismail Oluwole Obisanya (being its secretary/youth leader) as member of one of the work groups (education, youth and sports) of the economic transition team, stressing that the organisation would proffer necessary supports for its member specifically and the entire team by extension towards delivering on their terms of reference and desired results for common good of the state.

“This is to express our profound gratitude to the Governor-elect of Ogun State, Prince (Dr) Dapo Abiodun, and his deputy, Engr (Mrs) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, for honouring NSO Frontiers by appointing one of us, Ismail Oluwole Obisanya, as member of the Education, Youth and Sports, a work group of the Economic Transition Committee of Ogun State.

“We shall proffer necessary supports for our member specifically and the entire economic team by extension towards delivering on their terms of reference and desired results for common good of the state.

“We hereby implore the entire team not to let down the governor-elect of Ogun State, his deputy and entire residents of the gateway state on the confidence and trust reposed in them and also task them to urgently rescue the state from the shackles of misappropriation/mismanagement of resources and misplaced priorities caused by the present administration in the state.”
