    North harmonises groups for 2015

The North announced yesterday the formation of a Joint Action Committee to harmonise the interests of the various groups working towards winning power in 2015.

The groups’s spokesman and former Secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, told reporters in Kaduna that the Arewa Consultative Forum, the Northern Elders Forum and some groups from the Middle Belt have agreed to collaborate in their approach to the 2015 elections.

Baba-Ahmed said part of the objective of the group is to improve the unity and cohesion of the diverse people of the North in pursuit of goals and objectives which affect every northerner.

He noted that the various groups in the committee have decided to devolve some of their responsibilities to the joint committee, but they will continue to exist as separate groups.

The committee was essentially created to reduce waste in energy.

Baba-Ahmed said “this is a collaboration to improve the way the North will approach 2015, politics generally and all other developmental issues. My statement says that one of our objectives is to take full advantage of the many options and opportunities that are available to the North.

“We want to see a situation where the North plays a very informed, disciplined, strategic role in the manner in which politics is played in this country. There are many options available and we want to be sure that we work with those that will take the decisions to make sure that the north takes the best position in the interest of the people of the North.

“Let me say that this collaboration is unique. It is one of the very few efforts that all northerners have made that involve the genuine participation of all northerners. Our committee does not recognise core or subsidiary North.

“We recognise fundamental equality of northerners because the problems of the North affect all northerners equally. What happen, to the northerner in Benue happens to the northerner in Zamfara. We see the same level of poverty, insecurity and concerns. Those who use words like core northerners have no idea and we don’t want to operate with that kind of mindset.

“All northerners are equal and we realised that we have been divided by these kind of talks. There is no such thing as core North. We are united by our common heritage, our history, our poverty and our contemporary exposure to the same kind of problem.

“We are weakened by the day. There is no northerner that will tell you that he is better of because of his tribe or religion. So, this divide and rule has not worked for any single northerner.

He said: “I don’t know about the elitist north. The masses have to be led by somebody because they cannot lead themselves and the Nigerian masses have been let down by the elites for too long.

“Many people have claimed to be leading the North and they have let the people of the North. The elite themselves are rediscovering their potentials to lead and will submit their leadership to the goals and aspirations of the ordinary northerner. The elites cannot work without the masses.

“Our group is to make sure that the best candidate with the best interest of Nigeria emerges President in 2015. If any group said that one North is dead, they are entitled to their opinion. I am sure that they have their reason for saying that. What I know is that there is a north.

“There are many other options we are looking for and we will not limit ourselves to the issue of northern Presidency because it is only one of the options available to the North and we are going to work with others all over the place and we are going to be very strategic about the manner in which we work and advise politicians in this regard”.

Groups seek action on Southeast roads

President Goodluck Jonathan is under fire over the major highways in the Southeast, which are in deplorable state.

The Campaign for democracy (CD) Southeast region and the Progressive People Alliance (PPA), called on the President to find solution to the problem.

The CD urged the governors, Senators and House of Representatives members, past and present from the southeast to join forces in rehabilitating the abandoned Onitsha-Enugu-Port Harcourt express road.

The group said a quick intervention of the opinion leaders from the region devoid of political affiliations will help to end the long sufferings of the people of southeast.

CD chairman David Kalu in Aba, after the meeting, said efforts are in place to educate voters on the need to vote for credible and reliable candidates.

“2015 is approaching, Nigerians should start now to look for credible and reliable candidates for any elected offices. No more party…..we will be going into Voters Education Programme to empower people “.

The CD hailed the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) Aba Branch, for drawing State and Federal governments’ attention to the state of roads in Aba.

The PPA called on governors from the zone to meet with President Jonathan for solution to the problem.

Chief Sam Nkire, the National Chairman of the party, made the call in Umuahia in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He expressed confidence that the meeting, irrespective of party affiliation, would produce ‘meaningful and urgent’ result in addressing the challenges faced by commuters using the roads.

“There is no state in the Southeast geo-political zone that does not have deplorable federal roads and this is adversely affecting socio-economic activities of the area.

“The Enugu-Port Harcourt, Aba-Owerri, Enugu-Abakaliki, and Onitsha/Enugu roads are all in deplorable and appalling conditions,’’ he said.

The PPA chairman said though Nigerians from other geo-political zones had problems with the condition of federal roads in their areas, the situation in the Southeast is worse.

“It appears the governors from the South-East think that when they present the problem of their people to Mr President, they will no longer be in the good book of the President or that such would amount to confrontation.

“Presenting the problems of your people does not mean confrontation, because you are elected to ensure that the sufferings of your people are jointly tackled between the state and federal government,’’ he said.

Nkire said though the Southeast zone have some states controlled by the PDP and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), the governors should unite to achieve results on matters affecting the welfare and development of the zone.

The PPA national chairman called on President Jonathan to ‘step up’ action in revamping the nation’s railway system, noting that effective and efficient transportation system was crucial to the overall development of Nigeria.

“There is no economy that grows without good and cheap transportation system and railway is one of the cheapest mode of transportation.

“President Jonathan must take railway transportation seriously, if he wants to take the country to the next level,’’ Nkire said.

Group to Jonathan: Deliver on your campaign promises

The Foundation for Integration in Nigeria (FIN) has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to deliver on his electoral promises.

In a communiqué  at the end of its Executive Meeting held at the weekend in Abuja and signed by its National President,  John Aide, the group said:  “We urge President Jonathan to deliver on his campaign promises in all its ramification to Nigerians or forget 2015 as Nigerians will decide his fate through the ballot.

“The continued culture of corruption and the brazenness with which it is practiced is killing the economy of the country. Corruption is an enemy of development. Government should be sincere in its fight against corruption.”

On the state of insecurity, it appealed to the Armed Forces and Northern leaders to live up to their responsibility .

The communique reads: “We urge the Northern leaders to collaborate with the Federal Government to stop the menace of the bombing being perpetrated by the Boko Haram terrorist group and the Armed Forces of Nigeria. They should live up to their responsibilities by providing security to our facilities

“We urge the political leaders who suffer from verbal diarrhea to stop making divisive/undemocratic utterances to allow President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to perform.”

The group also rejected the plan by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to introduce N5000 note.

“We condemn and reject the plan to introduce 5,000 Naira note and the change of the 5, 10 and 20 Naira notes to coins as this will cause inflation and raise the cost of goods and services to the ordinary masses of this country.

“This great nation is bigger than any individual. We call on Nigerians not to be despaired but rather keep hope alive for the help of God and the collective active commitment of the people will bring about positive changes in Nigeria.”

According to the coordinator of the pprogramme, pIyssah Iybrahymm (aka Deluxwizzy), the pageant is organised to make Nigerian students have focus.

“We are going into this pageant to give the Nigeria institution a focus; a pageant that will tell Nigerian girls what they stand for in the society,” he said.
He said the pageant will be taking to different institutions in the country with the aim of reducing social vices ranging from cultism and touting among others.

“We are taking this project into the institutions one after the other; the winner of the pageant is going to take campaign into the Nigeria institutions and our campaign is to reduce social vices,” he said.

Stating further, Iybrahymm said “Miss Institute Nigeria pageant is to project modesty; to bring out colour to values, they are not putting on bikinis; the kind of dressing that we are projecting for the grand finale is going to tell people outside there that this pageant stands for uniqueness. And aside that we want people to see something good in being a model; it is not until you dressed half naked or until you showcase your sensitive parts that you are a model; you can be a model in the society in a more good way without being naked”.

The Coordinator condemns the act of going almost naked by Nigerian girls. “If you are going naked what Godliness is in that, what impact will your nakedness have on the society,”he asked.

“It is going to be a yearly programme; We call on the government and corporate organisations to support our course of bringing modesty back to our institutions in Nigeria”, the coordinator said
