Driver, guard held for ‘stealing’ hotel’s bus

The police in Lagos yesterday paraded a driver and a security guard at Best Western Hotel for allegedly stealing the company’s unregistered bus.

Fabian Arinze and Chiedozie Izuegbu allegedly connived to steal the bus on August 12, and took it to Onitsha in Anambra State to start a transportation business.

It was gathered that Arinze, who was recently employed at the hotel, drove the bus out of the premises and never returned.

Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said a manhunt for him was launched as soon as the case was reported and his employment record was reviewed.

“It was discovered that the gate man, Chiedozie Izuegbu, was his guarantor and the information he provided led to the suspect being tracked to Onitsha in Anambra State.

“He was arrested, the bus recovered and during interrogation, he disclosed that it was a plot between them to steal the bus.”

Owoseni urged residents to embrace profiling of domestic help and employees for easy tracking should a crime be committed.

Admitting the crime, Izuegbu said he did it because the hotel was not paying their salaries regularly.

He claimed that despite the fact that the salary was less than N25,000, the hotel usually owed them, making life difficult for him.

Izuegbu said: “Our plan was to use the bus and start a transportation business. The hotel used to owe us salary. The amount is small, yet they do not pay us regularly. It was frustration that led me to do it.”

The police also arrested a suspected armed robber, Segun Egan and recovered two locally made pistols, three mobile phones and four cartridges around Alagbado.

Owoseni said the arrest was made on August 25, by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ikeja, who were on patrol.

According to the Commissioner, the team encountered a gang of armed robbers and a gun battle ensued.

He said one of the suspects, Femi alias Lighter was killed during the battle, Egan apprehended while others fled.

On preparations for the Eid-el-Kabir, Owoseni said adequate security arrangements have been made to cover all 345 identified prayer grounds as well as recreation centres during the holiday.

He assured Muslim faithful that the police and other security agencies in the state would ensure that all roads leading to the prayer grounds were secured.

Owoseni said: “While wishing our Muslim faithful happy celebration, I want to assure them that every operational plan has been put in place including identification of the 345 Eid playing grounds in Lagos.

“Adequate security arrangements have been made to cover the grounds and ensure that all roads are covered by presence of policemen with a view to effectively manage traffic and give assurance to Muslim faithful that they won’t have hindrances to places of worship or recreation.

“The command will not give room to criminal elements to molest or attack anyone in the state within the period. Criminals are warned that the police and sister agencies are fully on ground and well positioned at strategic locations to catch anyone wanting to commit crime during the holiday.”

  • Guard: I killed my madam because of insults

My madam was always cursing me. She would insult my late father and mother. She was wicked and was never pleased. I went to Maruwa Park, Ajah, to smoke Indian hemp before I came back and killed her.”

Those were the words of a 22-year-old Abdulateef Tanko, the guard alleged to have murdered his employer, Mabel Okafor, 50, at Victoria Garden City, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The suspect, who fled to Taraba State after killing his employer, told The Nation yesterday that he slept at his quarters after stabbing the woman around 8:30pm on August 17, to avoid raising suspicion and fled the following morning.

Tanko disclosed that he stabbed the woman twice on her stomach with a scissors he used to trim the flowers, adding that she screamed his name before she fell on the ground.

He said: “After stabbing her, she screamed my name and so, I went outside the gate and some other security guards who heard her shout asked me what was happening. I told them nothing. Then, I told them that I was going back inside because my madam has warned me to always stay inside once its 6pm and she’s around.

“I knew that if I leave that night, the estate security will arrest me. So, I went and sat outside my quarters. That night I slept in the house and in the morning, I parked my things and went into her room where I took her three phones, her jewellery and some of her clothes. I also took N10, 000 from her wallet. It was the only money inside.

“I did not want to kill her but the woman is always insulting me. She insults my generation and it got me angry. I did not know her from anywhere. I have worked for her for just about two weeks before it happened. It was her former security man who gave me her number to call her. She was to pay me N18, 000 per month.

“I felt weak after stabbing her but there was nothing I could do. I believe it’s my stepmother’s curse that was working on me. She cursed me that I will always misbehave wherever I go and that it will never be well with me. I have never killed anyone before. I have never fought anyone in my life.

“When the police came to Taraba to arrest me, I knew that my end has come and so, I just cooperated with them.”

Asked why he stole the woman’s phones, clothes and valuables, Tanko said he wanted to generate money since he had no money on him.

“I gave the phones to someone to sell for me. Even the clothes, I gave them out to be sold.  Even, those who bought the jewellery (gold trinkets) at N4, 000 have not paid me yet. It was anger that made me kill her. Nothing more,” he said.

Police nab fleeing guard who attacked master

A security guard, Ibrahim Musa who attacked his principal in Lekki Phase 1 Estate, Lagos, last month, has been arrested in his hometown in Michika, Adamawa State.

Mr Ajiboye Akinjide, General Security Manager of Cougar Security Services Ltd, the firm that employed Musa, said he was arrested on July 9.

Musa was arrested by Corporal Stephen Chris and Sergeant Silas and flown to Lagos on July 11 with Inspector Sunday Arebamen and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvanus, both of the Maroko Police Division.

Akinjide told The Nation that Musa has been remanded in Ikoyi Prison pending his trial at Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on August 3.

He said: “We have been able to get the guy arrested.  He is in Ikoyi Prison.  He was charged to court.  It was on the strength of that that he was remanded in prison. We spent quite a lot of money, about N550, 000 to get him arrested.  The police officers from Maroko Police Station trailed him to Michika.  We had to fly him from Yola to Lagos. Members of his family have been contacted.  All of them were disappointed but they told him to carry his cross.”

Akinjide said the victim, who travelled to the United Kingdom for surgery after the incident, is recovering.

“The victim is recuperating in the UK.  I learnt the surgery went well and she was discharged a day after,” he said.

  • Guard flees after attacking master

The police are on the trail of a security guard, Ibrahim Musa, who allegedly attacked his master about five days agoin Lekki Phase 1 Estate, Lagos.

Musa had only worked for two weeks at the woman’s residence when he allegedly attacked her after she returned from work.

A source alleged that Musa hit the victim with a stone beforebiting and beating her. While struggling with the woman, he allegedly broke her hand and finger. Musa fled when the woman’s screams attracted a neighbour.

The victim was hospitalised for four days.

Musa was hired from Cougar Security Services Ltd.But the firm’s General Security Manager, Mr Ajiboye Akinjide, told The Nation that he was not hired directly from the firm by the victim. According to him, Musa was contracted from a client who hired him from the firm.

Akinjide said the firm was working with the police to trace Musa, who he stated, has fled to his hometown in Michika, Adamawa State.

“We know where he is from.  The police are heading towards the place.  We know he is from Michika; we know he is from Adamawa State.  We are on his trail.  I don’t want to say too much because we are still investigating.  We even trailed him to where he entered a bus; we got the ticket he purchased on the bus,” he said.

Akinjide said the firm did a background check on Musa before he was employed. His guarantors, he said, are involved in the search for him. He said there was nothing to indicate he was capable of such behaviour when beingrecruited.

He said: “We feel very bad about what happened and we sympathise with the lady who was attacked.  We are doing all we can to get him (Musa) arrested.  The security man was recruited by one of our managers about two weeks ago.  His documentation was done.  We did a background check.  The person that introduced him is with us and is assisting the police. We know his brother; we know where he works.

“When he was recruited, he did not show signs of being violent.  There is a limit to what background checks can reveal.  It is not as if we have a national database to work with.  The two weeks he worked I gathered he had been friendly with the woman.  She used to give him money and even encouraged him to fast.  The lady allowed him to carry her bag into the house.”

He advised home owners to be careful in relating with domestic workers and take time to study them before trusting them.
