  • 2019: Oyo health commissioner joins guber race

Havard-trained cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, has declared his interest in the governorship seat of Oyo State. Adeduntan, who is currently the Commissioner for Health in the state, made his intention to succeed Governor Abiola Ajimobi known yesterday when he led thousands of his supporters to the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Secretariat, Oke Ado, Ibadan, where he was received by the party executives and leaders.

He was a former governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the state during the 2011 general election. “When you look at those people aspiring for the position, there are contenders and pretenders. I am a contender and by the grace of God I am the next governor of Oyo State. I have done my best to uplift Oyo State in the last 19 months as a commissioner. I thank my brother, Ajimobi, for giving me the opportunity to serve the state,” he said.

Highlighting his vision, Adeduntan noted that he was poised at transforming the state into a medicine hub that would rival the likes of University College Hospital (UCH) and others in the country. According to him, “leaders can emerge from any part of the state. I am not contesting as a candidate of Ibadan but Oyo State. We won’t allow the state to retrogress.”

Welcoming the guests to the party office in the presence of other party leaders, the state party chairman, Chief Akin Oke, hailed the medical specialist for his laudable professional efforts which have brought so much fame to the state from across the globe. The party leader assured that all the aspirants will be given level playing field for the best to emerge.

  • Ekiti 2018: Church general overseer joins guber race

Ekiti 2018: Church general overseer joins guber race

A popular Pentecostal preacher based in Ekiti State, Reverend Tunde Afe, has declared intent to vie for the governorship seat in the July14, 2018 poll.

Afe, who is the Founder/General Overseer of House of Faith Christian Centre with headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, said he was joining the governorship race to make the difference in the life of the people.

Addressing a news conference in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, Afe declared that he would not contest on the platform of the two major political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, the two big parties have woefully failed Nigerians during their time in power. Afe promised to disclose the platform he would use to contest as soon as he concludes consultations.

The cleric also promised to field a Muslim as his deputy governorship candidate to have religious balancing and to send a signal that Nigerians are one in spirit.

According to him, time has come for Nigerians who mean well for the country to rise up and take leadership positions, to prevent total collapse of the system due to activities of corrupt politicians.

He said: “I didn’t receive any special direction before taking this step, because every Nigerian knows that the country is in dire need of good leadership and as a man of God who believes that things must be done properly, I have no reason to sit back while things degenerate.”

Afe continued: “Look at what is happening in Nigeria today. I mean killings everywhere and the best way to address this is by using Ekiti as a launch pad for good governance in Nigeria. All those that had ruled Ekiti did their best, but I think I can do better because I won’t take whatever that doesn’t belong to me as a benefit in government because I fear God.

“Let me say this: if all the governors and those occupying leadership positions take what are legitimately due to them alone as benefits, Nigeria will be far better than this and that is exactly what I am going to use my aspiration to teach.”

  • Imo deputy gov breaks silence, joins guber race

Imo deputy gov breaks silence, joins guber race

IMO State Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere, Thursday night, disclosed his readiness to join the 2019 governorship race after years of silence on his political ambition. Madumere who is from Owerri zone which has not produced a governor since the return of democracy in 1999, said that he is eminently qualified to succeed his boss, governor Rochas Okorocha.

Speaking while playing host the entire executive of All progressives Congress in Mbaitoli, Madumere, said that he is one of the earliest apostles of the Rescue Mission and can be trusted. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Uche Onwuchekwa, the deputy governor, said he has decided to heed the calls across the state and beyond to contest the 2019 election in the interest of the people of the state who have shown him overwhelming support and solidarity. The party chieftains endorsed him as their sole candidate for the 2019 gubernatorial election.

The party executive members from all the 12 wards of Mbaitoli LGA, led by the Local Government Chairman, Barr Tony Amaechi, stressed; “Among the few celebrated leaders in state and in the country at large, the Deputy Governor, Prince Madumere has distinguished himself in all ramifications. He has not only been proven to be loyal, humble but he has displayed competence to unimaginable measure.” They asserted that, “among the 12 qualities that have been enumerated as regards who succeeds Governor Okorocha, our deputy governor has scored over 98%. For us as a people, he has become a role model and the pride of Imo State.

On this note, the entire leadership of the All Progressives Congress, Mbaitoli chapter presents him as our soul candidate for the governorship race.” The youth leader, Comrade Obinna Osuji, in his speech, described the deputy governor as a “trustworthy Imo son who has shown competence, capacity, the administrative acumen and utmost love for the youth through life time empowerment programmes and mentorship”. • Guber race: No regret backing my deputy – Fayose

Guber race: No regret backing my deputy – Fayose

As the crisis over who picks the governorship ticket continues to rage in the Ekiti State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Ayo Fayose has insisted that he has no regret backing his deputy, Kolapo Olusola, to succeed him as the next governor of the state. He, however, added that in spite of his endorsement of his deputy, a primary election would still be conducted by the party’s national leadership to determine the PDP governorship candidate.

The governor spoke during an interactive session with teachers at the Government House, Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on Friday. Fayose said other aspirants who are up in arms against him for adopting Olusola would have been singing another tune if he had extended same gesture to any of them. “I have no role to play, only the NWC will conduct the primary to elect the candidate. So I won’t interfere despite my support for Prof Kolapo Olusola.

“I have no regret supporting Olusola. If it were those people I had supported, they won’t be abusing me. But they remain our brothers and sisters and we are going to put our house in order at the right time so that we can be on the same page,” Fayose said.

This was just as a PDP chieftain and former Commissioner for Public Utilities in the state, Deji Adesua, contended that Fayose has no right to impose Olusola on the party as governorship candidate. He said the resistance of some senior party figures against Fayose’s alleged imposition bid is a legitimate one, describing the governor’s alleged dictatorial tendencies as a “tragedy that has befallen Ekiti of our generation.”

Similarly, some other PDP governorship aspirants addressed a news conference during the week where they urged the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to disqualify Fayose from playing any role in the primary expected to hold in April. The aspirants include former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye; Senate Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi; former Ambassador to Canada, Chief Dare Bejide and former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi.

  • Matters arising from Abia 2015 guber race

Less than seven months before voters in Abia State, will file out to vote for their next governor, the question of the senatorial zone to produce a successor to the incumbent, Chief Theodore Orji, is already generating intense debates across the state.

And it would not be surprising if the development translates into intrigues and high-powered permutations in the days ahead.

At the centre of this unfolding drama, are the power blocks, which are the old Bende zone and Aba division. Of the two zones, the old Aba bloc is yet to produce the state governor since 1999.

On the strength of this, the popular expectation is that Orji’s successor will hail from old Aba zone, which is also known as the Ukwa/Ngwa bloc in line with the Abia Charter of Equity, ACE.

The ACE, which was occasioned by the need to assuage the fear of domination by any section, provides that the governorship of the state be rotated among the three zones.

Instructively, the document specified the sharing of political offices in a manner that none of the divisions at the time of creating the state would dominate the other.

    The old blocs

Accordingly, the zones at the period ACE was adopted were Afikpo Division, Bende Division and Aba Division.

It is believed that the ACE made the creation of the state from the old Imo State possible, and had guided the emergence of two state chief executives so far.

That may have informed Governor Orji’s declaration at different fora that he would hand over power to Ukwa/Ngwa people in 2015.

According to Orji, the ACE, which prescribed power sharing in the state, remains sacrosanct and will be implemented in the interest of peace and equity. Orji said he would not like to take any decision that would plunge the state into political crisis, hence the decision to respect the charter.

Ever since the governor made this known, divergent reactions have been trailing the decision, particularly from those, who are opposed to the idea. The promise also brought about a debate on which part of Ukwa/ Ngwa zone would produce the governor in 2015.

Instructively, the  Ukwa/Ngwa zone comprises of nine council areas of which Obingwa, Aba South, Aba North, Ugwunagor, Ukwa West and Ukwa East fall under Abia South senatorial zone while Osisioma Ngwa, Isiala Ngwa North and Isiala Ngwa South councils make up the Abia Central zone with the Umuahia/ Ikwuano bloc.

    Complaint and opposition

The opposition and complaint are hinged on the argument that Ukwa-Ngwa people are found in three Local Government Areas in Abia Central.

Political heavy weights like Senator Nkechi Nwogu, Acho Nwakanma, Chief A.C.B Agbazuere, Chris Akomas among others, are of Ukwa/Ngwa origin, but situated in the central.

This is why most analysts, opined that power sharing in the state remained between the old Bende bloc and Aba bloc.

Instructively, the larger concentration of the native Ngwa are believed to be found in Abia Central Senatorial District.

However, there is uneasiness in the camp of those, whose argument is that zoning should not overwhelm competence.

To this group, the best man, who could be trusted for continuity should emerge from any part of state.

    Capability to serve

While where the pendulum would swing to, is still left to be seen, analysts are of the opinion that if the disaffection arising from the governor’s support for the Ukwa/Ngwa is not addressed, the Ukwa/Ngwa people might lose the opportunity of providing the governor come 2015.

Amid the ensuing permutations, the entrance of Senator representing Abia Central District, Sen Nkechi Nwaogu, has altered the political calculation, as she comes in with vigour and great sense of accomplishment.

Nwogu is believed to stand a better position of representing Ukwa/Ngwa people

A two-time Senator and a former House of Representatives member (2003 – 2007), she is known for her wealth of experience in administration and resource management.

With this seemingly robust profile, the mood of the people outside and within the state, suggests that she stands a better position of representing Ukwa/Ngwa people.

Before now, her aspiration existed in the realm of speculation, but the two-time senator, recently put the doubts to rest.

Nworgu, at the PDP secretariat in Umuahia, formally declared her interest to govern the state on the platform of the PDP.

The lawmaker, who holds two records of being the first woman from Abia to take a seat at the House of Representatives and the Senate, insisted that her gender would not be a disadvantage in her quest to succeed Orji.

“If my party will support me I will run for the post of governorship. It is my aspiration, my desire. I have the qualification and experience to pilot the affairs of Abia State if given the mandate to govern Abia,’’ she stated.

    Massive empowerment programmes

Reputed for her massive empowerment programmes, Nwaogu asked not to be judged by her by gender, noting that her qualification and antecedents, stand her out.

The Senate Committee Chairman on Gas, insisted that she would build on the framework already laid by the incumbent, whose legacy projects have formed the foundation for a new Abia.

She is believed to have made her marks in the upper legislative arm as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Banking, where she used her position to get the banks conform to good corporate practices.

Her experience as a former member of the House of Representatives has played a key role in her robust parliamentary activities in the Senate so far.

With this towering profile, it is not doubt that Nwaogu is a remarkable force among all the aspirants.
