Nigerian set to break Guinness World Record in programming marathon

German-based Nigerian cloud engineer, Abel Yakubu, has completed a 60-hour marathon programming lesson in Abuja as part of efforts to break Guinness World Record for longest computer programming lesson.

Yakubu began the attempt at 11 am on Friday, November 21, and concluded at 11 pm on Sunday, November 23, at Minds and Emotions Centre in Graceland Garden, Wuse 2, Abuja. The global record stands at 48 hours and 15 minutes.

The event, streamed live on major social media platforms, was described as a landmark moment for Nigeria’s expanding technology ecosystem. Sixty students participated physically, while over 25 witnesses monitored the attempt.

Yakubu, who has over 10 years of experience in cloud engineering, said the marathon lesson focused on major cloud computing platforms, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. He said he was driven not just by a desire to break a world record but to inspire young Africans to embrace technology.

“I undertook this challenge to inspire young tech enthusiasts to develop profound tech skills, especially now AI adoption is rising globally,” he said. “It is important for young people to build hands-on skills.”

He said he spent two months preparing. “For three days, I have been speaking non-stop. I am inspired to help young people because they are the reason I am doing this,” he said. “The toughest period was going through the night. Training people on cloud computing all night is tough. My voice is almost gone.”

Yakubu urged young Nigerians to embrace technology, noting he has trained over 200 young people in one year. “This is the right time to learn tech skills,” he said.

“Parents should encourage their children to learn digital skills. You can never go wrong by learning a skill.”

He said he plans to continue his advocacy after the record bid. “I intend to continue preaching the gospel of tech to youngsters. Stakeholders also need to support young people in the tech space because it will contribute significantly to national development,” he said.

“When I heard about this, I felt it was an opportunity to stretch myself. Abel simplified everything. The atmosphere was perfect for learning,” she said.

Another participant, Adula Joseph Francis, said he had initially attended out of curiosity but ended up staying for the full three days.

“Abel is doing a great job. The way he explains and breaks things down is exceptional,” he said. “This challenge shows that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.”

Yakubu expressed gratitude to his partners at Minds and Emotions Centre and his support team, who helped coordinate the marathon training session.

Guinness World Records is expected to review evidence from the event before confirming whether the 60-hour session sets a new global record.

Nigeria targets Guinness World Record for longest dining table

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest dining table, as part of the upcoming ‘Oriki: Taste of Culture’ Gastronomy Festival scheduled for December 6, 2025, in Abuja.

According to Abisoye Fagade, Director-General of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), the record-breaking table will stretch an impressive 3.6 kilometers, long enough to sit between 2,000 and 3,000 guests.

Fagade revealed the plan during a briefing attended by Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy. He described the event as both a cultural celebration and a tourism development initiative designed to showcase Nigeria’s culinary excellence on a global stage.

“We plan to break the record in the morning of December 6 and use the same table for a dining event later,” Fagade said. “There will be food, culture, music, and comedy in the evening. It will show that Abuja can also host major cultural events in December.”

He added that the festival aims to strengthen Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism value chain through skills development, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment, while positioning the country as a leading destination for gastronomy and cultural experiences.

Musawa endorsed the project, describing gastronomy as an emerging force in Nigeria’s creative economy comparable to the nation’s booming film and music sectors.

“When we talk about economic growth and youth development, gastronomy plays a role just like film, music, and fashion,” Musawa said. “People eat every day, and Nigeria has made significant progress in showcasing its food globally.”

She also commended Nigerian chefs and culinary entrepreneurs for using food to promote the country’s cultural identity and expand its global influence.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to officially unveil the festival and the world record attempt in Abuja.

The current Guinness World Record for the longest dining table is held by Cairo, Egypt, which set a record of 3,189.93 meters in 2019.

Nigeria’s proposed 3.6-kilometer table would comfortably surpass that mark, potentially securing the nation’s place in the global record books.

Hilda Baci’s mother attributes Guinness World record feat to prayer, God’s mercy

Hilda Baci’s mother has credited her daughter’s Guinness World Record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice to prayer, fasting, and divine intervention.

The record-breaking dish, which weighed 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz), was prepared during a highly anticipated event at Eko Hotel.

Speaking virtually during Pastor Jerry Eze’s NSPPD online morning service on Tuesday, Baci’s mother recalled how she and her daughter embarked on fasting and prayer ahead of the attempt.

“She told me, ‘Mommy, we have to fast all through this week.’ I joined NSPPD every morning, prayed through the night, and placed the event before God,” she said, adding that her greatest prayer was that the occasion would not turn into shame.

She recounted her initial fears when her daughter revealed plans to cook with 250 bags of rice in a six-metre-wide pot. “When I saw the pot, I was afraid. It was like my office. Even the cover had to be lifted by cranes,” she recalled.

The massive effort eventually used 200 bags of rice, 20 goats, 30 gallons of oil, tomato paste, and seasoning, drawing a large crowd of supporters.

Baci’s mother testified that they prayed against accidents or setbacks, particularly the risk of the giant pot leaking.

“That would have turned joy into disaster. But God did it,” she said, affirming that the success was proof of God’s mercy.

She concluded by echoing a popular phrase from the NSPPD altar: “What God cannot do does not exist.”

“When I saw the crowd, I just said, what God cannot do does not exist. Father, no one will collapse here, no death, no accident, no evil report. And that was how it ended, everything in praise,” she said.
