Guiness Nigeria Plc  is not only empowering farmers with credit facilities, access to market and training but also supporting campaigns on responsible drinking in the interest of the society.

For instance, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data showed that  Nigeria had about 11 million motor vehicles at the third quarter of 2017.

Around 3,000 car accidents occur every day around the world mainly due to alcohol abuse and human errors like use of phones when driving, disobeying traffic light and signs, impatient drivers , over speeding, bad roads, tires, driving under exhaustion among. This led to 12,077 road accidents of which 5,400 persons died in 2015.

Guinness Nigeria, as part of their corporate strategy for reducing alcohol-related road crashes, has set ambitious responsible drinking targets and is committed to measuring and reporting on every programme. The firm promotes the  Diageo and United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) partnership which has been running globally but will be implemented in Nigeria.

The UNITAR Road Safety Conference, recently held in Abuja served as an outlet to discuss solutions and share best practices and learnings on road safety legislation. It was also meant to look at regulation that will help address the issues of road safety in the country.

At the event were Minister for Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, Executive Director of UNITAR, Nikhil Seth, Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Baker Magunda, and over 100 local and international experts and stakeholders. The stakeholders introduced plans to unveil major road safety engagements to reduce traffic death and injuries and improve road safety both globally and in Nigeria during the conference.

The partnership with UNITAR and Federal Government will deliver a high-visibility drink driving enforcement campaign in Lagos. It will involve the training of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers in planning, running and evaluating road-side breathalyzer checkpoints using the model created by renowned expert Othon Sanchez; who successfully ran a sustained drink drive campaign in Mexico City which delivered a 40 per cent reduction in crashes and fatalities. The objective of the three-year campaign is to increase awareness and knowledge among drivers about the risk factors associated with drink driving and also curb alcohol-related fatalities.

The programme Sanchez, a former police chief of Mexico City and a founder of “Conduce Sin Alcohol Programme” delivered a reduction in drinking and driving related crashes and fatalities. The training aims at addressing drinking and driving and the commitment to the “Drive Dry” campaign – meaning driving without alcohol consumption in the hope of reducing fatalities on the road; is the model that will be adopted by Guinness Nigeria and effected through the partnership with UNITAR and The Ministry of Transportation.  It is also to note that the initiative by Sanchez was also in partnership with UNITAR and Diageo and yielded results across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The target for Guinness Nigeria is to ensure that as a corporate organisation there is a strategic plan to achieve the United Nation’s Global Goals and support WHO’s programmes on health. With UN, road safety targets have been included in the final text of the new Sustainable Development Goals adopted by UN member states in New York. A specific stand-alone target in the Health Goal is to reduce road traffic fatalities by 50 per cent by 2020 and a target on sustainable urban transport in the cities.

Guinness Nigeria is also engaging other stakeholders to curb the scourge of road crashes, in Nigeria. It launched the Annual Ember Months Campaign in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to sensitize drivers on the dangers of drink driving especially during the end of the year through the festivities; to the New Year, when vehicular movements on the roads are usually high. The Annual Ember Months Campaign by Guinness Nigeria has been ongoing for 14 years and has garnered much impact.

  • Guinness posts N1.2b profits

Indications are that the fundamentals of business, especially in the preceding year, shows that things may have been a bit rosy for Guinness Nigeria, a leading beverage and alcohol Company in Nigeria and a subsidiary of Diageo Plc.

In the unaudited results for its first quarter period ended 30 September 2018, released to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), the profit before tax increased to N1.2bn driven by lower finance charges, as a result of the rights issue, which more than offset operating profit decline in a challenging operating environment.

Besides, the company’s net sales declined 6% in the three months ended 30 September 2018, a development driven by increased competition in the value beer segment, that more than offset growth across the rest of the business.

Gross profit declined 12% as a result of continued inflationary pressure on our raw material costs and volume declines. Marketing spend declined 8%, marginally ahead of net sales decline. Operating profit was down 37% largely as a result of the gross profit decline.

Speaking on the announcement, Mr. Baker Magunda, Managing Director/CEO, Guinness Nigeria Plc said, “In the three months ended 30 September 2018 Guinness Nigeria delivered results that reflected the continued challenges in the operating environment and increased competition in beer category. Continued inflationary pressure on our raw material costs and volume declines impacted both gross profit and operating profit. Profit before tax however benefitted from a significant reduction in net finance charges as a result of the rights issue. Looking forward, we will continue to focus on the three strategic pillars of productivity, expansion of our portfolio, as well as the execution of the commercial footprint initiatives to improve performance in the business.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Babatunde Savage, Chairman of the Board of Guinness Nigeria Plc, said, “The Board is confident that we are making the right investments in the company and our brands to ensure our long term competitiveness.”

  • Guinness, Water Aid undertake ‘Water of Life’ project in Kebbi

Guinness Nigeria Plc has entered into partnership with WaterAid to ensure sustainable access to water, sanitation and hygiene, while helping people to improve their health and well-being.

The partnership, which has the Guinness Nigeria’s “Water of Life” programme and WaterAid Nigeria working with Kebbi State government through the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (Kebbi RUWASSA), with the technical support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in implementing a sustainable water project to contribute to building thriving communities in the state, is aimed at providing inclusive access to clean water to an estimated 2,500 people in D’kwa village, Danko/Wasugu LGA in Kebbi. It is to strengthen the community management structures’ capacity to support sustained operations of the water facility model.

The water facility is expected to alleviate water challenges faced by D’kwa community, which is largely a farming community where many households rely on unsafe shallow wells and other unimproved surface sources for their supply of drinking water.

During the dry season from November to January, residents usually have to walk for two to three kilometres to get water from a stream. This scarcity, according to WaterAid, disproportionately affects women and girls, putting them at greater physical risk, as many households rely on them to fetch water from these distances in areas  prone to sand storms.

Speaking on the project, Corporate Relations Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc., Mrs. Viola Graham-Douglas, said: “The Guinness Nigeria ‘Water of Life’ programme is aimed at providing access to clean water, basic sanitation and hygiene in order to reduce poverty, promote better health, wellbeing, gender equality and empower women and girls. We’re working with key partners to shine a light on these issues and find lasting solutions, one community at a time.

“This project is also expected to support local development as the financial model to manage the water point will also help small businesses to thrive and make local financing fund pool available to support larger community development initiatives. This supports Guinness Nigeria’s focus on supporting local livelihoods and prosperous rural economies.”

According to WaterAid, overall, access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services has remained low in Nigeria. A UNICEF/WHO Joint Monitoring Programme, said about 60 million people out of about 190million population still lack access to clean water, while only 33 per cent has access to basic sanitation. This means approximately, about 120 million people in Nigeria do not have access to toilet facilities.

WaterAid Nigeria Country Director, Dr. ChiChi Aniagolu-Okoye, said: “Water, sanitation and hygiene remained some of the most neglected issues in our country today. At WaterAid, our work is all about transforming lives by improving access to these life-saving services for the poorest and most marginalised in our society.
