  • Gunmen attack warehouse in Abia

    •Owner, customers lose over N1m

Six gunmen have robbed a clothing warehouse on Ehi Road, Aba, Abia State.

Sources said yesterday the hoodlums made away with over N1million belonging to the owner and customers.

A source, who identified himself as Kelechi, told our reporter that the gunmen, who came in two commercial tricycles, struck about 2pm on Monday when customers were paying for goods.

He said: “The owner of the warehouse received his goods at the weekend. Around 2pm on Monday while people were buying goods, six hoodlums alighted from two tricycles.

“Nobody suspected them because people were busy. When the young men approached the entrance of the building, people thought they were members of a security agency.

“It, however, dawned on them that the men were unfriendly when they asked people to lie down, pointing guns at them. They collected women’s handbags and asked others to hand over their money.

“The victims, including the owner of the warehouse, complied. The hoodlums shot into the air before escaping. It was then passersby and neighbours became aware of what happened.

“I guess the gunmen were those who robbed a warehouse on St. Michael’s Road. They didn’t shoot anybody. The style of operation was the same. They used tricycles to beat security agents.”

Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna said the matter was yet to be reported.

He urged the public to report such matters to the nearest police station for action, stressing that the police were ready to fight crime in collaboration with other security agents.

  • Plateau killings: ‘How gunmen rained bullets on us’

A survivor yesterday recounted how gunmen killed 29 people inside the classroom they took refuge to avoid violence.

Men, women and kids were displaced by communal conflict which started again last month after a few years of peace in the state.

A survivor, Samson Audu, who is on admission at the Enos Hospital in Miago, the headquarters of Bassa local government, said: “When the gunmen were coming to attack our village, we heard the sound of their guns from the other end of the village, we decided to run for safety. We ran towards soldiers camped at the primary school. The soldiers asked us to run into one of the classrooms, and we responded happily believing that they are armed and could protect us. There were many of us. The classroom was filled. We were over 100 and we thought we were safe, but 30 minutes after, the gunmen came and started firing directly at anyone they could see. Unknown to us, the soldiers that took us there had suddenly disappeared. I received a gunshot on my arm.”

Another villager, Amos Wakili, who escaped the attack, said: “It was God that prevented me from entering the classroom, because when the soldiers were directing our people into the classroom, something told me that even that place was not safe. I refused to go there and hid inside a bush, that was what saved me. Most of my neighbours and my friends were killed in that classroom.”

Berom community, which lost a former head of civil service in Plateau State advised the state government to find the killers and prevent another bloodshed.

Yesterday, Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, accompanied by top ranking security officers as well as state government officials; paid a condolence visit to the palace of the paramount ruler of Irigwe Chiefdom, the Bra Ngwe Irigwe in Miango.

Lalong had an on-the-spot assessment of crisis areas after a security council meeting.

In one of the IDPs camps at a primary school in Shinge, which is hosting over 2,500 IDPs, Lalong told the IDPs that the government lacked words to express its sadness and frustration over the killings.

He said: “First, the government is at pain because these attacks are coming after government has laboured to restore peace in all nooks and crannies of the state. We have been enjoying prevailing peace for over two years now and we thought we should make the peace a permanent one until this one.

“Also sad is the fact that the attack came at the point where farmers were about to harvest the proceeds of their farms in the villages.”

The governor almost broke down on seeing aged women and children displaced by the gunmen. He urged the inmates at the camp to remain vigilant and be watchful of any strange person who might sneak in to carry out evil acts at the camp.

“There are suicide bombers everywhere and they have carried out attacks at IDPs camps, so, be conscious of any strange person among you and report such to security agencies immediately,” said Lalong.

Lalong added: “At a period like this, you have to impress on your people to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies who are out to fish out the attackers.”

The paramount ruler said “In as much as the people still have confidence in the security agencies, government should ensure those on ground are replaced immediately to avoid a clash between the people and security agencies. Changing this group of security agencies will promote peace in this area because everybody is angry at them and might likely confront them.”

Ropp District Development Association and Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation of Ropp district urged Lalong to take all necessary measures to fish out the killer of Da Moses Gwom, a former Head of Civil Service who was murdered in his house recently.

Both organisation represent the entire Berom community of Plateau North senatorial zone of Plateau state.

A statement jointly signed by Da Joseph Chollom Jock and Da Yusufu Fwam on behalf of the Berom community said: “Prior to the murder of the late Moses Gwom, one inspector Davou Chollom, a Berom man was brutally murdered in Wereh coupled with several other attacks and killings in Ropp district in recent times especially in Sho, Kwok, Gassa, Lobring, Jong, Gafat, Zim etc.

“In all these attacks, the district lost hundreds of people to the level that the population of people’s of the district has been restricted to internally displaced persons, even as the paramount ruler of Barkin Ladi LGA is more or less a displaced person in his locality.

The statement appealed to both federal and state governments to come to the rescue by providing security needed for the original inhabitants of the villages to return to their homes, rebuild their homes and continued with farming activities without any hindrance.

Gunmen attack warehouse, rob customers of million of naira

Gunmen numbering six have reportedly attacked and robbed a clothing warehouse located at Ehi road in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State.

Sources within the area who spoke to our reporter on Tuesday said that the gunmen made away with over N1million from the owner of the facility and customers who had come to purchase goods from the dealer.

A source that simply identified himself as Kelechi told our reporter on Tuesday that the gunmen who came in two commercial tricycles struck at about 2pm on Monday while many customers were making payment for the goods that they have selected.

Narrating the incident Kelechi said “The owner of the warehouse offloaded his goods at the weekend and normally, people will come to buy from him. About 2pm on Monday while people were making payment for the goods that they have selected, some guys numbering 6 in two commercial tricycles alighted from the tricycle.

“Nobody suspected them because everywhere was busy as many people were paying for goods while others were making arrangements on how they will convey the goods that they have paid to their shops. As the young men in their late twenties and may be early thirties approached the entrance of the building some people who saw them thought that they were members of one of the security agencies who come to collect royalties like it has been the system.

“It however dawned on them that the guys were the unfriendly ones when they asked the people to lie down and face the floor pointing guns at them. They collected the women’s handbags and asked others to hand over to them all the monies that they have.

“The victims including the owner of the warehouse complied and handed over to them, the monies that they have and released gun shots into the air before they drove off. It was at that point that passersby and neighbours became aware of what happened.

“I guess that these guys were the same syndicate that robbed a warehouse at St. Michael’s roads in a similar way just that unlike the St. Michael’s warehouse robbery, they didn’t shoot at any person. But the style of their operation is the same as they use commercial tricycle in apparent move to beat police, army and other security operatives.”

When our remoter contacted the Abia State Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Geoffrey Ogbonna, he said that the matter was not yet reported at the police station.

Ogbonna however, urged members of the public to report such matter to the nearest police station for prompt action, stressing that the police was ready to fight and nip crime in the bud in the state with the collaboration of personnel of sister agencies.

Buhari orders security agents to halt attacks

    Rep urges probe

Gunmen yesterday stormed an Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) camp in Nkiedonwhro village, Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, killing 29 inmates.

The victims were among the over 100 villagers taking refuge at the camp, a primary school.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen defied the curfew imposed on the area, sneaked into the camp at dawn and opened fire on the innocent victims, who were asleep.

Twenty-seven died immediately; two died later in hospital.

The displaced persons’ homes had been razed in the series of attacks in the locality, a situation that forced them to take refuge at the public school.

President Muhammadu Buhari last night ordered security agents to stop the killings.

The killings in Bassa Local Government began on September 7, about 20 persons were murdered. Several other attacks followed as the gunmen attack each village every night. Governor Simon Lalong imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the local government last weekend.

The government and people of the state were in confusion over how people displaced from their homes and left in the custody of armed security agencies could be killed so easily.

A federal lawmaker from Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency, Hon. Suleiman Kwande, called on the Federal Government to investigate the killings.

Kwande, who issued a statement, said the killings should be singled out for investigation, considering the way it happened.

“I call on the Federal Government to set up a committee to investigate the fresh killing of innocent persons, including children, women, men and aged in a primary school where they were taking refuge,” Kwande said, adding:

“Enough is enough of the killing in Maingo, Bassa Local Government Area and the entire Plateau State. Security agencies must wake up to their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives in the state. This evil must be stop. Enough of all the killings.”

The lawmaker called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials for the community and the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health to move to treat the victims.

Besides, Kwande called for the arrest and prosecution of all those behind the heinous crime.

Luck ran against three hoodlums yesterday as they attacked the Federal Government Girls’ College, Old Umuahia, on the school’s visiting day.

The suspects -two men and a female- were overpowered by angry security men and youths, beaten to stupor and handed over to the police.

Time was 12noon when a number of parents had gathered on the school campus to see their children and wards.

The principal of the school could not be reached but a source in the school who pleaded for anonymity confirmed the story.
