Residents flee as gunmen again storm Ogun communities

Residents of 27 villages in Imushin, Ogun State yesterday fled their homes after gunmen raided the areas.

The attack was the second in two days from the suspected militants, who have killed no fewer than 13 people and left several others injured.

This is just as the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the death of two suspected kidnappers last Friday at Elepete, who were shot during a raid by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Sqaud  (SARS).

The command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), who confirmed their deaths, said one other suspect sustained gunshot injuries but was responding to treatment.

The Nation gathered that although no one was killed yesterday, the gunmen raided shops and carted away villagers’ wares and money.

It was also learnt that three of those injured in Saturday’s attack died later same day in the hospital and have been buried.

Decrying the spate of attacks on the communities, the monarch, Oba Taiwo Adebunmi Gbamboshe, said his people have fled from their homes for fear of the unknown.

He appealed to the government to deploy more security to the riverine communities, adding that those injured and hospitalised should be catered for.

“There are 27 villages in the communities and the residents have fled because of the attacks. There were sporadic gunshots early yesterday morning. My people’s lives are in danger. They have fled and have refused to come back because of fear.

“Despite the presence of police and soldiers, the people are still afraid to return. I am appealing to the government to send more security and to cater for all those who sustained injuries and are hospitalised.

“Also, the owner of the hotel , where some security men raided, was taken away and till now, she has not been found. All the police divisions say they do not have her and never took her. We do not know her whereabouts now,” he said.

Badmos said: “Information was received on Friday at about 1:30pm that some kidnappers had assembled at Elepete, a sprawling community near Ogijo with intent to carry out kidnappings. Based on this, operatives of SARS moved in. “At a point near the creek, one Victor Worimegbe was arrested. He led operatives to TOPKATT Hotel, where others lodged. • Gunmen kill 10, injure many in Ogun communities

Gunmen kill 10, injure many in Ogun communities

A pall of anguish descended on five communities in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State yesterday after a gang of gunmen invaded the area and shot no fewer than 10 persons to death.

Several others were wounded by flying bullets, some others  fell into ditches while they were  scampering to safety in the bedlam sparked by the unexpected shooting at Imagbon, Elepete, Kajola, Glorious land and Ereko.

Residents gave the names of some of the dead as Wasiu Okeowo, Yah Lateef, Oladele Ogundare and one Umoru.

Eye witnesses blamed the attack on   pipeline vandals who had earlier on Friday been dislodged by policemen from their hotel hideout at Elepete.

During the raid, two suspected pipeline vandals were allegedly shot dead.

The wounded among them were taken into safety by their fleeing colleagues.

But at about 12midnight, the runaway vandals returned in fury and well-armed.

They vented their anger on the residents killing and destroying whatever they could lay their hands on.

Goats, fowls and dogs did not escape their fury. They were mercilessly mowed down.

Over 20 shops were broken into and valuables therein carted away.

A resident, whose name cannot be mentioned for safety reasons, said corpses littered the community.

“Some of us came back this morning to see corpses everywhere. Houses were destroyed. Shops vandalised and they even killed our livestock,” he said.

“It was those militants that did it. They have been terrorising us for some time now especially since the government stopped pumping fuel through the pipeline at Elepete.

“Before what they usually did was to come and kill our livestock. They would also attack people with guns and steal from them. The only time people died was during shoot outs between the boys and security agencies.

“But yesterday they came for the residents. It was an attack on the community. I don’t know why they went on the rampage and killed our people like that.

“Already we have counted about 10 corpses and three injured people have been rushed to the hospital. We have been having meetings and policemen from Ogijo division came to see things for themselves.”

Another resident simply identified as Alhaji said the boys had threatened to return and raze their houses.

He pleaded with government to “come and help us before these militants kill us all,” adding they left threatening to come back and torch our houses. They have even marked some building for destruction. We want justice for our people who have been killed.”

Some of the bereaved families have buried their dead. One of those already buried is one Oladele Ogundare.

A source described him as a comfortable and popular man in the area.

“He was a rich guy. Nobody knows why or how he was killed. But I can confirm to you that his family has buried him,” he said source.

Femi, Oladele’s brother said he was shot up to 10 times in his Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) by hoodlums.

He said: “My people called and told me that my brother had been killed. I was not there when it happened. They said it was around past 11pm while he was driving that the militants attacked him.

“They deflated his tyres so that he won’t run. His vehicle was riddled with bullets and the wind screen shattered. One of the bullets hit his leg. He was bleeding and ran out of the car to enable him escape, but they pursued him.

“We saw traces of blood from where he left the car to the place his body was found. We have buried him. He was 44 years and he worked at the airport. He left a wife and three children. All we want is justice. We are crying for justice for our brother and for all those killed by the militants.”

The State Police Command, however, confirmed only three deaths.

Spokesperson for the command, Muyiwa Adejobi, said three persons died and one was injured.

He identified one of the deceased as Waheed Buhari, adding that the man was shot with his daughter.

He said: “Gunmen numbering about 100 stormed the riverine community of Elepo around past 11pm. They shot a man, Waheed Buhari, and his daughter, Miriam. The man later died in the hospital but his daughter is responding to treatment.

“We also found two unidentified bodies. So, what was recorded was three fatalities and one injury. “People are alleging that the gunmen are militants. We cannot say for sure who they are and are not leaving anything to chance since the community is in the riverine area.

“The Police Commissioner has directed a widened scope of investigation and security has been tightened in the affected areas.”

But operatives of Ajeromi Police Division were led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Aminu Gusau, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) chased and caught the injured man and two others.

Before their arrest, the gunmen had reportedly attempted to silence their injured colleague but killed a mechanic, Idris Taiwo, instead around Kola bus stop in Ajegunle.

An eyewitness, Adetunji Bakare, the gunmen shot sporadically to evade police arrest.

He said: “Some of the robbers were able to escape on their motorcycle but the policemen put up a good fight and arrested others. The injured robber was among those arrested and when he was searched, three live bullets were found on him.

“But the man claimed he was not an armed robber. He claimed that he was a robbery victim and that the criminals carried him on their motorcycle after collecting his N600,000 and phones. He said the armed robbers put the bullets in his pocket and that he thought it was his house keys. He claimed that he sells cars at Cotonou.

“The police asked him who owns the gun used for the operation but he did not answer. They brought out a motorcycle rider for him to identify but he started crying after the rider gave him sign.’’

A police source told The Nation: “Three of the armed robbers were arrested. They robbed in another area and were fleeing when they were caught at Ajeromi. They have been moved to Special Anti-Robbery Sqaud (SARS) Ikeja..

The men after their operations tried to escape through Ajegunle but were spotted by a policeman attached to a bank and after a hot chase they opened fire and in cross firing one of them was shot on the leg, while a stray bullet from the robbers hit a road side mechanic.

“The robbers were later arrested. Ammunition was recovered along with a motorcycle. The case has been transferred to SARS for further investigation.”

  • Gunmen abduct GSM dealer in Aba

A four-man gang yesterday in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, abducted a phone dealer, identified as Pastor Okey from his shop on St. Michael’s Road.

The Nation gathered that the gunmen arrived the area in a black Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) Lexus 300 at about 10am. They were said to have pretended to be waiting for someone buying phone and on sighting their victim, approached him and whisked him away.

The incident, which took phone dealers and buyers unawares, resulted to pandemonium as many scampered for safety on sighting the gunmen.

The commotion forced commercial banks in the area to abruptly suspend services.

The abduction of Okey, who is also the chairman of St. Michael’s Phones and Accessories Dealers Association, sources said, could not have been unconnected with the leadership tussle within the union which was recently resolved by the State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

A source said: “I saw heavily armed gunmen in a Lexus 300 jeep. They masked their faces.

“Shortly, they emerged with Pastor Okey, who was recently recognised by Governor Ikpeazu as our chairman. They (gunmen) didn’t shoot sporadically maybe because they didn’t want to attract the attention of the security agencies.” Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Ogbonnaya Nta confirmed the Aabduction and said the police would ensure the victim’s release.

  • Gunmen kill four in Ogun

No fewer than four persons were yesterday killed with several others injured after gunmen stormed the Banku Estate, Ibafo area of Ogun State.

It came barely two weeks after a prominent traditional ruler was abducted in the area. He was released after N5million ransom was paid.

It was gathered that the criminals, who were suspected to be dislodged pipeline vandals, arrived in the area in three buses at about 9pm on Wednesday.

They were said to have stormed the residence of a businessman, apparently to harm him, but met his absence.

Out of frustration, the criminals were said to have fired sporadically killing innocent people.

A source, who said the dislodged vandals have taken to kidnapping, said it was difficult for the criminals to vandalise pipelines following pressure from security agents.

He said: “They now feel that they can make more money from kidnapping since it has become increasingly difficult for them to operate as vandals in the area. The hoodlums arrived around 9pm on Wednesday. When they arrived, they fired over 80 shots to scare away people.

“They later headed for the home of a prominent businessman in the area. As at the time they arrived at the place, the target was not home. Out of anger, the hoodlums started firing sporadic shots. Two of the occupants of the house died during the shootout while three others sustained bullet wounds.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesman for Ogun State Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, said three other people were injured.

He assured that the command and other security agencies would get the perpetrators, who, he said were the dislodged vandals.

“We are pained at the loss of any Nigerian life. The police commissioner has been engaging other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure safety of lives and properties,” he said.

  • Seven die as gunmen attacks Military boat in Delta

Seven die as gunmen attacks Military boat in Delta

Insurgents in the Niger Delta drew the first blood in the escalating security situation in oil-rich region Wednesday night when a band of armed persons attacked a military house boat in a creek near Omadino community, Warri South council area of Delta state, killing 7 people, including 2 soldiers.

The Nation gathered that five boats, loaded with heavily armed insurgents, stormed an isolated boat house, located inside the creek around Omadino, an Itsekiri community, at about 8:00pm, opened fire on the occupants, killing all those aboard, except for one civilian, who reported died later while being taking to the hospital.

There was yet to be any claim of responsibility by either the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), the insurgent group, which had in recent times pitted itself against the federal government by destroying oil and gas facilities or any other group for that matter.

Reliable sources, all of whom preferred to be kept anonymous, confirmed the development to the Nation, some with more detailed facts than the others.

A community source, said the attack happened at about 8:00pm, claiming all occupants of the boat, whom he thought to be soldiers, were killed.

“An army security house boat was attacked and all the security men inside were killed last night, at Omadino by pipeline here. This happened around 8 in the evening”, he said.

Another source, from one of the military formations in Warri, however revealed that the house boat was not all soldiers, but that there were civilians, who render different types of services aboard.

A military source from Warri, who confirmed the development, told the Nation that two soldiers and five civilians lost their lives in the attack.

He said most of the men stationed at the house boat had gone on pipeline patrol when the attackers came.

According to the source, although outnumbered by the assailants, the remaining soldiers who were left on the boat when the attackers came gave their best by giving a frantic fight, adding that the assailants did not leave without a bloody nose.

“The report is true. They came in five speed boats, they were many and unfortunately when they got there, some of the soldiers were on pipelines patrol. When the attackers got there, the man on sentry did his best and the rest, but unfortunately, because of their number they opened fire to kill the civilians inside the house boat. There were four civilians and two soldiers, making six.

“The seventh person, who happened to be a civilian, was rushed to Oghara (the Delta State University Teaching Hospital), getting to Oghae, they found out that the hospital was on strike. Before he could be rushed back to Warri, his situation had deteriorated; you know the distance between Warri and Oghara that was how he gave up the ghost.

“Our people also got some of them down, but as they wouldn’t like to leave any of their casualties behind, we can’t ascertain, but the soldiers tried their best in reducing their number”, the source said.

However, efforts to get the Commanding Officer of the 3 Battalion, Effunrun Barracks, Major Monday Anzaku and the Army Public Relations Officer (APRO) of the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Benin, Captain Jonah Unuakhalu, for confirmation and comments were unsuccessful as both men were unreachable.
