  • Gunmen kill policeman, kidnap Lebanese in Delta

    Fear gripped residents of Uti Street and other parts of Effurun, Delta State on Wednesday following the killing of a mobile policeman in the area.

    The incident occurred during a kidnap of an expatriate staff of a construction firm.

    An expatriate staff working for the Lebanese construction firm, Levant Nigeria Limited, whose identity was not immediately known, was abducted by gunmen brandishing dangerous weapons.

    The Nation gathered that the ill-fated policeman was among security personnel attached to the expatriate before the gunmen struck.

    Although the circumstance of the killing was yet unknown, our correspondent gathered that the attack took place along Uti Road, which link the DSC Expressway base of the construction firm.

    The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, could not be reached for comment as he did not take calls placed to his mobile phone by our reporter. He was also yet to reply to our text inquiry.

    However, a staff of the construction firm who answered calls to the company’s official telephone line in Abuja confirmed the kidnap. The staff, who simply identified himself as Shittu, said details were still sketchy when our reporter called at 2:16pm.

    He said, “Yes, we heard of it (kidnap), but we do not know the details yet. The events are still unfolding now.”

  • Gunmen kill two soldiers on Okene-Lokoja highway

    Two soldiers were on Saturday shot dead along the Okene-Lokoja highway by a group of armed hoodlums who are yet to be identified by security agents.

    The News Agency of Nigeria learnt in Lokoja that five other soldiers were critically injured in the attack, which took place at about 6:30am at a spot in Abobo Village along the busy Okene-Lokoja-Abuja highway.

    The dead and wounded soldiers were among over 100 military personnel travelling in a convoy of two army luxury buses to Kaduna for a training programme at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji.

    The Commander, Brigade of Army Records, Lokoja, Maj.-Gen. Alphonsus Chukwu, who confirmed the incident to NAN said that the convoy came under gun and explosive attack.

    He said the five wounded soldiers had been taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja for treatment.

     

     

  • Gunmen kill two policemen in fresh Kano attack

    Gunmen on Tuesday killed two policemen at Kwana Hudu in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, barely nine hours after they murdered two and injured another.

    An eye witness told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano that the incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

    According to the witness, the gunmen attacked a police check-point in the area and killed their victims.

    However, the Public Relations Officer of the state Police command, ASP Magaji Majiya, told NAN that security agencies were trailing the gunmen in the affected areas with a view to apprehending them.

    “What happened at Kwana Hudu in Nasarawa Local Government Area was not an attack, but it was a search carried out by our men, which is yielding positive result,’’ said the spokesman.

     

  • Gunmen kill two policemen in Kano

    Gunmen again struck in Kano on Tuesday killing two policemen and injuring one at Yan’awaki, Unguwa Uku area of the city, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

    NAN recalls that gunmen also killed two policemen and injured two other civilians on Monday in Kano.

    An eye witness, who wants to remain anonymous, told NAN in Kano on Tuesday that the latest incident happened at about 8:20 am.

    According to the witness, the policemen were in their patrol vehicle when the gunmen laid an ambush on them, killing two of them and injuring one.

    When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state command, Mr. Magaji Majiya, confirmed the incident.

    He said the incident happened at about 8:00 am on Tuesday when the gunmen laid an ambush on the police vehicle at Yan’awaki, Unguwa Uku.

    He said security operatives had cordoned off the area while investigation had also commenced into the matter.

     

  • Gunmen kill journalist in Onitsha

    The Editor of Anambra News, a monthly local newspaper in Onitsha, Anambra State, Mr Ik Udendu, has been killed by suspected assassins.

    The late Udendu was returning from Onitsha to his home in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government, on Saturday night, when he was reportedly killed.

    Police Commissioner Ballah Nasarawa confirmed the killing in Awka, the state capital.

    He said he would investigate the matter to know those behind the killing.

    The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Henry Nwasike, and Secretary, Comrade Ifeoma Anumba, could not be reached for reactions yesterday.

    A family source said the late Udendu visited a commercial printer in Onitsha to know if his paper had been printed for distribution.

    He did not return home, the source said.

    The late editor’s elder brother, Chukwulozie, also a journalist and publisher of the paper, said the body of his slain brother had been deposited at the Iyi-Enu Hospital Mortuary, Ogidi, for autopsy.

    Chukwulozie said his late brother had no misunderstanding or disagreement with anybody that could have warranted his murder.

    He, however, said he received an anonymous phone call on Saturday night that he should pick his brother’s body in front of a restaurant at Afor Nkpor.

    The publisher said the family contacted the vigilance group, which contacted Ogidi Police Station.

    According to him, the police took the body to nearby Iyi-Enu Hospital Mortuary.

     

     

     

     

  • Gunmen kill Goje’s security aide

    The police orderly attached to the immediate past governor of Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje, has been shot dead in Gombe.

    Inspector Rilwanu Gadzama was shot by two men at aboutv 4:00pm at Pantami quarters of the metropolis over the weekend.

    His assailants, according to sources, rode on a motorcycle and accosted him.

    As soon as they killed their target, they abandoned their motorcycle and fled the scene.

    Police Commis-sioner, Mohammed Sule, confirmed the incident and said investigation had begun to find  Gadzama’s killers.

    Another policeman, Corporal Mathew Micheal, was shot last Wednesday on his way to his duty post at a telecommunication facility at Pantami area.

    His colleagues, Corporal Umar Mohammed, Constables Audu Mudi and Christopher Gibson, were also injured in the attack.

     

     

  • Unknown gunmen kill four in Kano

    wo unknown gunmen yesterday in Kano shot dead four persons near a mosque on Zoo Road.

    Some Sudanese traders sell locally brewed tea in the area.

    An eyewitness said the incident occurred about 6.45pm.

    It was gathered that the two gunmen, who were riding a motorbike, stormed the area and opened fire on the four persons.

    The victims died on the spot.

    Two of the victims, a source said, were employees of Kano State Road Transport Agency.

    They were said to be on duty at the time of the attack.

    Before men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) arrived on the scene, the gunmen had escaped.

    The JTF cordoned off the area while the residents ran for safety.

    Police spokesman Magaji Musa Majiya, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), confirmed the incident.

    He said investigation has begun to track down the fleeing gunmen.

    Gunmen attack police station, secretariat in Adamawa

    Unknown gunmen on Thursday attacked and razed the Song divisional police station and local government secretariat in Adamawa, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

    A resident of the town told NAN on condition of anonymity that the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday.

    “The police station and part of the one-storey secretariat building were burnt by the gunmen, who also attacked a security check-point on the Song-Yola road,’’ he said.

    The source said that an old woman and a boy were hit by stray bullets in their home near the police station.

    “Dada Audu, an 80-year-old woman with her grandson of about 15 years were hit by bullets and are feared dead,’’ he said.

    Contacted, the Adamawa Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, confirmed the attack but gave no details.

    Ibrahim said he was heading to the location.

    NAN reports that the Song attack came less than a week after a similar attack in Maiha, Hong and Fufore local government areas of the state.

     

  • Gunmen attack Adamawa police station

    Unidentified gunmen on Sunday attacked a police station in Hong, Adamawa State.

    Police spokesman Mohammed Ibrahim confirmed the attack to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Yola, the state capital .

    He said the gunmen attacked the station at 8pm on Sunday but were repelled by policemen, who engaged them in a shootout.

    Ibrahim said: “They were forced to retreat in different directions and were disorganised after they were forced to abandon their mission.

    ”They scattered and could not regroup to attack other places as they planned.”

    The spokesman explained that the police did not record any casualty except that a girl in the neighbourhood sustained a minor injury from a stray bullet.

    The incident came three days after a similar attack on Maiha Divisional Police Station on Friday.

    During the Maiha attack, in which two people were killed (a policeman and a civilian), the hoodlums also attacked Prisons, Customs, the Presidential Lodge, the Area Court and the Local Education Authority offices in the local government.

    The Adamawa Comptroller of Prisons Mr Andrew Barka said 11 of the 35 convicts, who were freed by gunmen at the Maiha Satellite Prisons, have been returned to the custody.

    Barka explained that four of the convicts returned on their own while seven others were rearrested. He sought the cooperation of the public in tracking those on the run.

    The Prisons chief said the inmates have been transferred to Mubi Prison, adding that the convicts of Maiha were serving various terms based on minor crimes.

  • Gombe lawmaker abducted

    Unidentified persons have kidnapped a member of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Alhaji Jalo Ganga in his residence on Sunday.

    A source told the News Agency of Nigeria that the kidnappers with a motorcycle, abducted the lawmaker around 5 a.m. when he was going for his morning prayers.

    The source said the lawmaker shouted for help to no avail as his captors were bent on taking him to an unknown destination.

    The Commissioner of Police in Gombe, Malam Mohammed Sule, confirmed the incident, saying the lawmaker was kidnapped on Sunday morning.

    “Yes, we just heard this morning that some hoodlums came with a motorcycle while he was going to pray.

    “He was accosted and they took him on a motorcycle; it seemed a vehicle was parked close to his house, because people said they heard a sound of a vehicle zooming off,” he said.

    The police chief explained that the kidnappers abandoned their motorcycle with no plate number.

    He assured the public that the police command would do all within its powers to rescue the lawmaker.

    “My investigators and intelligence officers are already working to trace his whereabouts and the motive behind his kidnap,” he said.
