Gynaecologist cautions against s3x enhancement drugs

A Consultant Gynaecologist, Dr Ayodele Ademola, has cautioned against the use of s3x enhancement drugs, saying people should stop using it, “except when exceptionally necessary.”

Ademola, who is also the Medical Director of a fertility centre in Lagos, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.

He said s3x enhancement drugs are drugs which enhance erectile function and aphrodisiacs which increase s3xual arousal and desire.

He added that the use of such drugs could have both positive and negative implications on human health, stressing that the negative effects, however, outweighed the benefits.

According to him, s3x enhancement drug is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

He explained that such drugs could cause hypertension, heart failure and related diseases.

The gynaecologist said “it is not advisable to use s3x enhancement drug, except when exceptionally necessary, and must be under strict medical prescription and supervision.”

According to him, there are many instances where people who used s3x enhancement drugs end up losing their lives.

“I have had a situation where two elderly couple took erectile dysfunction drug simultaneously had heart attack and died.

“Also, a young man of about 45 years of age who took overdose of tramadol with the aim of enhancing his s3x performance also died in the course of having s3xual intercourse.

“If anyone has potency problem, it is advisable that such person seeks medical attention rather than using enhancement drug because it has many underlying side effects.”

The gynaecologist further advised against self-medication, emphasising hospital visit for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Ademola explained that Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a common medical disorder with increasing prevalence worldwide.

He said “hypertensive, diabetic and aged people are at higher risk, and should completely avoid using it because they might drop dead in the process.

“Some health implications of over-the-counter male enhancement drugs include damage to the urethra, permanent difficulty maintaining an
    erection, among others.”

  • Infertility: Gynaecologist tasks women on routine checks

Dr. Charles Oti, an Abuja based gynaecologist, has advised sexually active women to go for routine check to detect early symptoms of gonorrhea and other bacteria’s that could lead to infertility.

Oti gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

The expert described gonorrhea as a common human Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) caused by the bacterium neisseria gonorrhoeae.

He said that the bacteria were transmitted from one person to another through vaginal, oral or anal sex.

Oti said that women were at 60 to 80 per cent risk of getting infected from a single act of vaginal intercourse.

He said that men were at 20 per cent risk of getting infected from a single act of vaginal intercourse with an infected woman.

According to him, the risk for men who had sex with men was higher, noting that a mother could also transmit gonorrhoea to her new born during child birth.

The expert said that it affects the infant’s eye, which was referred to as ophthalmia neonatorum.

However, Oti explained that gonorrhoea cannot be contracted through toilet or bathrooms.

He further said that the risk of infection can be reduced significantly by using condoms and by having a mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected person.

Some women with the bacteria are asymptomatic (do not shown signs), whereas others have vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain or pain during intercourse.

He said that most infected men have symptoms such as urethratis associated with burning during urination and discharge from the penis.

Gonorrhoea, if left untreated, may last for weeks or months with higher risks of complications.

“One of which includes systemic dissemination resulting in skin pustules or petechia, septic arthritis, meningitis or endocarditics.

“In men, inflammation of the epididymis, prostate gland and urethral structure, while in women the most common result of untreated gonorrhoea is pelvic inflammatory disease,’’ said the expert.

He said that other complications include septic arthritis in the fingers, wrists, toes and ankles; septic abortion; chorioamnionitis during pregnancy, neonatal or adult blindness from conjunctivitis and infertility.

Oti said that due to the increasing rates of antibiotics resistance local susceptibility patterns must be taken into account when deciding on treatment.

  • Uncontrolled diabetics prior to conception pose danger – Gynaecologist

A consultant gynaecologist, Dr Nathaniel Adewole has advised diabetic mothers to always control their blood sugar level before conception to prevent congenital malformation in unborn babies.

Adewole in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja said that uncontrolled diabetic in pregnant mothers risked giving birth to abnormal babies and were prone to increased level of abortions.

He added that in the latter part of pregnancy “diabetic mothers are prone to intrauterine restriction; which at times could lead to intrauterine foetal death.’’

NAN reports that intrauterine growth restriction is a condition where a baby’s growth slows or ceases when it is in the uterus.

Foetal death refers to the spontaneous death of a foetus at any time during pregnancy; although the term is often used interchangeably with stillbirth.

Adewole said that since the baby in the womb of a diabetic pregnant mother was already used to certain level of sugar; it might have low sugar level after delivery.

“For those that are already diabetic prior to pregnancy, one of the steps is controlling the diabetics before pregnancy.

“Because uncontrolled diabetics prior to pregnancy can lead to a lot of complication including congenital malformation; so is better one controls the diabetic before conception,’’ he said.

According to him, diabetic occurs when the body cannot handle relative or absolute level of insulin that result in high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia).

“But if the pancreas is producing adequate insulin and the body is responsive; it will not affect the blood sugar level, because the body will be able to handle normal level of sugar consumption,’’ he said.

He also advised that those whose diabetics started during pregnancy should look out for the risk factors and ensure proper management.

Adewole, however, said that expectant mothers who were at higher risk of having pregnancy induced diabetics were those with family history of diabetic parents or siblings.

“Others risk factors are a woman that had delivered a baby of 4kg and above or a woman who is more than 90kg.

“Also a woman who during antenatal test up to two pluses for sugar during urinalysis,’’ he said.

The gynaecologist stressed that once diabetic mellitus was diagnosed in pregnancy; it required urgent treatment which could be diet alone or diet and insulin.

He said that most of the time patients were allowed to deliver by themselves under supervision if the insulin level was appropriately managed.

Adewole said that uncontrolled diabetic could affect all parts of the body including fertility in both male and female.

He, therefore, urged expectant mothers to register for antenatal clinic early and go for regular medical check-ups.

  • Miscarriage: Gynaecologist warn women against stress

Dr Adaora Ukoh, an Abuja based gynaecologist, has warned that women who exhibit signs of stress are three times more likely to miscarry during the first three weeks of pregnancy.

She disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ukoh described stress as a physical response, saying that when stressed the body thinks it is under attack and swithed to fight mode thereby releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine to prepare the body for physical action.

According to her, women whose ages ranged from 18 to 34 four with elevated levels of stress hormone miscarried during the first three weeks of pregnancy, compared to 33 per cent of those with normal levels.

However, she said that miscarriages are known to happen during the first three weeks of pregnancy especially if the stress hormone was high.

The expert added that factors such as elevated cortisol levels at a very early stage of pregnancy increases the stress hormone thereby causing miscarriage.

The expert noted that during times of physical or emotional stress, the brain releases several hormones such as corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) as such causes miscarriage.

She added that women who deliver prematurely or have low-birth-weight babies were often found to have high levels of CRH in their bloodstream and demonstrate a greater risk of miscarriage in women reporting stress.

Ukoh also said that stress could cause the placenta and the uterus of a pregnant woman to trigger uterine contractions that could predispose the woman to lose pregnancy.

The gynaecologist added that mast cells were abundant in the uterus and during stress; the release of CRH causes these mast cells to secrete substances that could predispose a pregnant woman to miscarriage.

“Research shows that women who deliver prematurely or have low-birth-weight babies were often found to have high levels of CRH in their bloodstream, and show a greater risk of miscarriage in women reporting stress.

“CRH is a hormone the brain secretes in reaction to physical or emotional stress, and also produced in the placenta and the uterus of a pregnant woman to trigger uterine contractions during delivery which can also cause miscarriage.

“With several studies, indication of miscarriage shows an increased risk among women reporting high levels of emotional or physical turmoil in their early months of pregnancy or just before conception.

“But while a relationship has been noted, it has been proven that stress hormones and other chemicals can wreak havoc on the uterus and foetus,’’ she said.

Ukoh noted that those who had previous multiple miscarriages had significantly high levels of CRH and another hormone urocortin, in the tissues of their foetuses when compared with women who miscarried once or those who had abortions.

She therefore advised women to avoid stress emotionally and physically on or before being pregnant in order to avoid miscarriage.

She also enjoined women who want to be pregnant to always go for urine checkups weekly for a period of one year to look out for stress induced hormone cortisol in order to help reduce risk of miscarriage.

  • LUTH did not diagnose, refer Mayowa abroad

LUTH did not diagnose, refer Mayowa abroad

The Management of the Lagos University Teaching University (LUTH), Idi Araba has clarified issues concerning one of its patient, Miss Mayowa Ahmed saying she is an old patient of the teaching hospital who has been on treatment for another condition.
In a statement from the hospital, the management said the 31year-old lady came into the Private Wing of LUTH on Monday, 25th July, 2016 with a history and clinical features of an intra-abdominal mass. The family and the patient brought along some results of laboratory investigations ordered and done from outside LUTH. Three different Specialists were invited to review Mayowa. The Gynaecologist, Oncologist and Haematologist all arrived at a tentative diagnosis of an abdominal malignancy. They planned to conduct a series of fresh tests to confirm the definitive diagnosis, since the earlier tests were neither requested nor authorised by any doctor from LUTH.
“The family, however requested to fly Miss Ahmed outside the country barely 24 hours after her admission in LUTH, thus stalling all the planned investigations meant to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. We were able to transfuse her with much-needed blood only after lots of persuasion where the family was told point blank that it was risky for her to travel by air, given her low blood count. Today is the 3rd day after admission and a definitive diagnosis has not yet been made while the relations insist on their own to carry her abroad. LUTH has only dealt with Miss Ahmed and her relations throughout her stay and not with any other third party. Contrary to any circulating information, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital did not refer Miss Ahmed overseas and this Institution is not involved with any fund-raising activity or activist on her behalf,”the statement read.
LUTH said there was a disturbance of the peace yesterday (today) around the ward premises, when an altercation involving Miss Ahmed’s relatives and persons not known to the Hospital ensued, the police were invited to restore peace in the Hospital. Both parties are presently with the police and we urge the general public to patiently await the outcome of the ongoing police investigations.
The hospital said it enjoined the good-natured public, the  press and all philanthropists to seek the expert opinions of specialists in Nigeria if we want to maximise the gains of their concerted efforts and selfless contribution towards alleviating the suffering of fellow Nigerians.
  • Healthy eating during pregnancy will guarantee baby’s well-being — Experts

A dietician, Mr Olusola Malomo, on Thursday advised pregnant women to imbibe the healthy eating habit during pregnancy for proper growth and development of the foetus.

Malomo, who works at the Massey Children Hospital, Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that adopting the healthy eating habit at any stage of pregnancy would be beneficial to the mother and the foetus.

“Adopting a healthy eating plan before pregnancy is the best; a pregnant woman should begin to eat good food so as to keep the mother and baby healthy during pregnancy.
“A nutritious, well-balanced eating plan can be one of the greatest gifts you can give to your developing baby and it will pave way for easy labour.
“The food which expectant mothers eat determines the basic nutritional health which her child is born with, and provides a model for eating habits during childhood and thereafter.
“Try to incorporate vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes, lean protein, and other wise food choices into your eating plan before and during pregnancy, to give your baby a strong start in life.
“The food a woman eats on daily basis during pregnancy will affect how her body works, and how she maintains energy and strength for years to come,’’ he said.

Malomo said that mothers who do not eat good food during pregnancy place their babies at risk of severe complications such as premature birth and could cause lung and heart problems.
“Eat protein such as chicken, fish and lean beef. Calcium-based foods are milk, eggs, yoghurt and cabbage. Iron foods are bread, cornmeal, cereals, among others.

He also advised pregnant women to drink more water and avoid alcoholic beverages.

Also, a gynaecologist, Mr Oriola Idris, who works with the White Waters Hospital in Ikorodu, said that pregnant women should avoid tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption.
“Reduce caffeinated beverages from your daily intake, maintain a healthy eating habit throughout your pregnancy and do reasonable exercises, to ease labour and delivery.
“Always consult your healthcare provider before taking any strange step during pregnancy,’’ Idris added.

  • Gynaecologist advocates contraception for sexually active women

Gynaecologist advocates contraception for sexually active women

Mr Innocent Ujah, Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Lagos, on Tuesday advocated permissible family planning for sexually active women.

Ujah, also an obstetrician and gynaecologist, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on phone in Abuja that contraception was highly needed by women who were not yet in need of having babies.

He said that marriage or having a baby should not be a measure for any woman to access family planning or contraception, adding that it was primarily for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy.

“It is important that young girls and women who are not prepared to have a baby should go for contraception/family planning.

“When we say family planning, you must not have a baby or be married before you can do family planning because family planning is to prevent pregnancy,” Ujah said.

The expert added that complications associated with unsafe abortions and pregnancies commonly existed among young adults who naturally would not want to visit the hospital for contraception.

He observed that young women mostly abort pregnancies with quacks owing to the panic of facing discrimination from their reproductive healthcare provider and the society.

“Unsafe abortion and risks of unwanted pregnancies are mainly associated with young adults between the ages of 10 to 25, and these are the people that willingly will not access family planning.

“Most times they are scared of what people will say, maybe they are not married and as a result they end up aborting pregnancy with quacks which can cause death,” said the director-general.
However, Ujah enjoined reproductive healthcare providers to realise that these group of young adults have unmet needs.

He further noted that contraception in sexually active women would ensure that unsafe abortions that may lead to maternal mortality were minimised
