    Police arrest two more kidnappers of Mrs. Odumosu, recover cash, firearms

    The police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the abduction of Mrs. A. Odumosu, wife of retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Hakeem Odumosu.

    Mrs. Odumosu was kidnapped by four masked men at her residence in Arepo, Lagos, at around 9:55 p.m. on January 16. 

    The police had previously announced her rescue from an Ikorodu forest, where two suspects were killed in a gunfight, and N10 million, along with assorted firearms and ammunition, was recovered.

    In a statement on Friday, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi revealed that the two new suspects—Agbojule Smart, 27, and Keleke Michael, 30—were apprehended by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police Special Squad.

    The suspects were arrested Friday morning while attempting to leave Lagos, with N2,250,000 recovered from them.

    “Upon interrogation, they confessed to their crime; belonging to a gang of four, 2 of whom have been neutralized previously.

    “Recovered from the suspects upon their arrest were the sum of Two Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira, which was part of the requested ransom, two locally fabricated rifles, and 11 live cartridges,” stated Adejobi.

    He said the Inspector General of the (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun commended the operatives for their gallantry in apprehending these suspects and encouraged them to maintain this high standard of competence in the fight against crime in all its manifestations. 

    “The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to public safety and the security of the good citizens of Nigeria. 

    The Force remains steadfast in its commitment to reducing crime to an absolute minimum and fostering the establishment of peace across the nation,” he said.

    FG gives 14-month Abuja-Kano highway completion date

    The federal government has set a 14-month completion timeline for the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano dual carriageway project, following the termination of sections of the contract previously awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria.  

    The Minister of Works, David Umahi, explained that the contract was terminated due to irreconcilable differences and the company’s attempt to extend the project timeline by three additional years, which was deemed unacceptable.  

    Umahi also revealed that modifications had been made to the project to ensure its durability and functionality, considering the road’s significance in enhancing Nigeria’s infrastructure and fostering connectivity across the northern region.

    The adjustments include a 10-kilometer extension at the Kano end and a 5-kilometer extension at the Abuja end to prevent alignment failures that could hinder connectivity.  

    According to a statement on Friday by Mohammed Ahmed, the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Umahi made these remarks on Wednesday during an inspection of the project, accompanied by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammad Idris,

    Umahi affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to completing the project on schedule, noting that the road had been divided into three manageable segments to ensure quality and timely delivery. 

    According to him, palliative works are currently underway on failed sections from Abuja to Kaduna to achieve a pothole-free alignment while awaiting the re-award of the contract.  

    “The road will be built to last between 50 to 100 years, creating a lasting legacy,” Umahi said, emphasizing that all parties are aligned with the goal of completing the project on time, and any delays or hindrances will not be tolerated.  

    He urged stakeholders to set aside any political considerations and focus on delivering a world-class highway for Nigerians, highlighting that President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Administration is determined to alleviate the suffering of road users. 

    He said his directive to complete the road within 14 months has been backed by the full cooperation of members of the National Assembly, adding that all stakeholders are working collaboratively toward achieving the milestone. 

    Reiterating the determination of the Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Tinubu to complete the project without further delay, he said, “He has directed that the suffering of road users on this alignment be brought to an end, and we are committed to doing that.”

    In his remarks, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammad Idris, assured Nigerians that progress inspections would be conducted periodically, with updates provided to citizens. 

    He expressed confidence in the professionalism of the project team, adding that the President remains resolute in improving the nation’s infrastructure and ensuring the timely completion of critical projects like the Abuja-Kano highway.  

    The Federal lawmakers pledged their support for the project through adequate budgetary provisions and oversight to ensure its success for the benefit of all Nigerians.  

  • Police arrest six suspects for assaulting lady

    The Nigeria Police Force said it has arrested six suspects connected to the assault on a lady in Edo State.

    The lady in the video that went viral was stripped naked and pepper was inserted into her private part for allegedly stealing a phone.

    The Police said following the viral video, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu ordered an investigation into the matter which led to the arrest of the six suspects.

    The Police also said they have established contact with the female victim who is 24 years adding that her health status and recovery rate are being monitored.

    The Police in a statement in Abuja on Thursday by the Force Spokesman, ACP Frank Mba also said that two other suspects are currently at large.

    The statement reads: “Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested six male suspects involved in the shocking, barbaric and indecent assault meted out on a young Nigerian female as shown in a video which recently went viral.

    “Following the dehumanizing incident, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the report.

    “Consequently, the Edo State Police Command, led by its Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu swung into action, leading to the investigative breakthrough.

    “Two other male suspects are still at large. Efforts are being intensified to arrest them and bring all involved to justice.

    “The Nigeria Police Force condemns jungle justice in its entirety and warns of dire consequences for persons who resort to criminal acts of self-help.”

    The six male suspects arrested are: Otoghile Joel (owner of the phone alleged to have been stolen by the young woman), Lucky Igbinovia (alias “One Man Squad” in whose house the young woman was tortured), Edobor Osemwengie (manager of Lafun Hotel), Kingsley Iyamu, Gregg Eweka and Friday Omorogbe.

    The Police also stated that the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu will provide more details as the investigation progresses.

  • Man killed for demanding N3m from daughter’s lover

    A 50-year old palm wine seller, Matthew Idahosa, has been killed by a supposed lover of one of his daughters from whom he had demanded the sum of N3m as compensation.

    Late Matthew was said to have been bitter that the daughter’s lover, Atekha Iyare, a vulcanizer succeeded in sleeping with her.

    The incident happened at Oza village in Orhionmwon local government area.

    Atekha, aged 50, who was paraded at the Edo State Police Command said he was shocked that the girl’s father said he would not marry even if he paid the N3m.

    He said the girl is a student and that both of them were lovers.

    The suspect said he fled from the village when late Matthew was using policemen to harass him after the love affair bubble burst.

    According to him, “I thought the father had forgiven me because I ate rice in their house on Christmas Day. The father brought policemen and the matter was being settled.

    “I ran to the bush when the man threatened to kill me if I did not pay the money. They told him to give me his daughter if I paid the money but he said no.

    “When hunger was too much, I came out and decided to face the consequences. The man saw me while going to the farm and we started fighting. He held a gun while I held a wood.

    “When I managed to get the cutlass from him, I cut him on the face and ran away with his motorcycle to avoid arrest. I was arrested by vigilante in Afuze, Owan East local government area.”

    Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, said the suspect would soon be charged to court after investigations have been concluded.

    Chief Imafidon Osia Ehigie, father of Monday, a police sergeant who was killed last week by suspected cultists has debunked reports that his late son was a cultist.

    Monday and two others were killed last Saturday near Namayo junction, Upper Sakpoba in Ikpoba Okha-Local Government area while returning home from work.

    He was an orderly to the Chairman of the Ikpoba-Okha local government area, Dr. Eric Osayande.

    State Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, said late Monday was killed fighting alongside one of the rival cult group.

    But Chief Imafidon who expressed shock at the statement of the Police Commissioner said the cultist tag on his late son was scathing and inglorious.

    Imafidon said Odumosun orchestrated the cultists killing to deny payment of due entitlement to a worthy and committed officer who in the course of duty paid the supreme prize.

    He denied having any meeting with the Police Commissioner where he confirmed his son as a cultist adding that he would seek justice at the appropriate time.

    Chief Imafidon noted that the assertion of Odumosu was not only obviously lost in between naked lies but a dislocation of an official channel of dissemination of verified information from an organized system that uphold professional modalities.

    He said his late son had served three Presidents of the Ikpoba Okha Customary Courts and was deployed to the Ikpoba Okha Council Chairman on recommendation of the Divisional Police Officer Ugbekun as an officer attached and served diligently.

    Police sources told our reporter that over 30 persons have been killed at Upper Sokponba since the cult war began two months ago.

    At Upper Siluko road area, suspected cultists were said to have plucked out the eyes of their victim when they meet their target at home.

    Several other youths have been killed in different parts of the state.

    Odumosu said several persons have been killing in connection to the cult killings.

  • Doctor found dead in Benin hotel

    The Police in Edo on Thursday confirmed that a medical doctor, Dr Osasogie Ogbeide, was found dead in a hotel in the state capital, Benin.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Thursday, that Ogbeide was of the Radiology Department of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

    According to Odumosu, it is not a case of murder or kidnap.

    “The doctor checked into a hotel on Saturday and was not seen going out on Sunday nor did anyone visit him, so, the door was forced open on Sunday.

    “He was found lying face down on bed. The bed sheet was not even ruffled. There was also a bottle of soft drink in the room.

    “There was no sign of struggle or anything on him. We are looking into a case of suicide or suffocation,” he said.

    Odumosu however, said that an autopsy was being conducted on the corpse adding that the police was waiting for the report.

    When contacted for clarification, the Public Relations Officer of the UBTH, Mr Joshua Uwaila, said he was not aware whether the doctor was kidnapped or not.

    “I don’t have that information, that a doctor was kidnapped,” he said.

  • Police in Edo arrest 214 suspects for criminal activities in two weeks

    The Police in Edo State has arrested about 214 suspects for various criminal activities within the last two weeks.

    The State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu made this known on Monday in Benin at his maiden media briefing.

    Odumosu noted that of the figure, 16 suspects were arrested for armed robbery, three for kidnapping, 57 for cultism and nine for child theft.

    “Fifteen suspects were arrested for murder, four arrested for defilement, while 110 others were arrested within the metropolis during a raid by the command.

    “Out of the figure, 68 of the suspects were screened out, while the remaining 42 were still with the command, pending completion of investigations.

    “Within the period, we were able to rescue four kidnapped victims, six robbery victims, four defilement victims and two stolen victims. Thirteen arms, 72 ammunition and four vehicles were recovered within the period,” he said.

    Odumosu said that during his tenure, he would ensure that members of the public have unfettered access to all police formations across the state.

    He said that his mission statement was to reduce criminality through maximum utilization of human and other resources.

    The commissioner noted that the command had put in place strategies to collectively achieve a safer Edo which include: visibility policing, quick response and intervention to distress calls.

    “Others are zero tolerance for corruption, respect for human rights, robust collaboration with other security agencies and other stakeholders.

    “Zero tolerance for crime and criminality, prompt professional and unbiased investigations and mopping up of all illegal arms from unauthorised persons.

    “Other strategies include: the dedication of 100 permanent police lines to all the police divisions and formations in the state,’’ Odumosu explained.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Odumosu is the 39th Commissioner of Police in the state and resumed office on Jan. 2.
