Hamzat: Tinubu’s economic reforms will bear fruits

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat recently celebrated his 60th birthday in Lagos, where he spoke on the need for Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his efforts to reposition the country for excellence. Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU reports.

At 60, boyish looking Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat has great cause to thank God for existence and survival. As deputy governor of Lagos State, life goes on for the prince, technocrat, politician and administrator, who is held in esteem by peers, his party elders and his boss, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

When Hamzat rolled out the drums few weeks ago  to celebrate six decades of his earthly sojourn, the who-is-who in the society turned up to honour him. Many top chieftains of the ruling part witnessed the ceremony, and the few who could not make it sent their apologies.

The multi-purpose hall of the Lagos Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja was filled to the brim. The Government House and state secretariat were temporarily relocated to the premises. Guests were led by the governor, who eulogised his deputy as a worthy, competent, loyal and trusthworthy partner, who has served the state with diligence.

“For five years, we have been inseparable like Aki and Pawpaw; I testify to the glory of God in his life,” said Sanwo-Olu, who described Hamzat as a brother, friend and partner in progress, whose  trust and confidence he has enjoyed as captain of the ship. Exuding happiness, the governor added:”That thing you are asking for, God will do it for you. You will live long in good health and sound mind.”

Sanwo-Olu traced their acquaintances to the Bola Tinubu years in Lagos when they both served as commissioners. He recalled the bond of unity and period of hardwork, vigilance, diligence,  and meticulous duty, saying:”If memo did not pass through us, you needed to come and see us at the back”

The governor said the joint involvement facilitated their adjustment when fate brought them together again in government, adding that their relationship has not been characterised by differences and disagreement. “This is an example of what humility is; an example of unity and harmony,” he added.

Thanking Hamzat for leadership, partnership and sense of purpose, Sanwo-Olu said:”My colleagues tell me that they have not seen an intelligent deputy governor like him; a man of dignity and pride.”

It was a modest occasion; a blend of interdenominational thanksgiving service and lectures by reputable scholars from the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo. At the ceremony, the synergy between Muslim and Christian leaders symbolised religious harmony in a state reputed for its religious and ethnic diversity.

Accompanied by his delectable wife, Remi, and promising children, the celebrator was resplendent in his flowing agbada, beaming infectious smiles and radiating the joy of accomplishments.

At the event were the gerontocrats, who were contemporaries of Hamzat’s father in politics and Governance Advisory Council (GAC) – Prince Oluyole Olusi, Otunba Gbelegbuwa Busura Alebiosu, Baba Aladura Olorunfunmi Basorun and the Apase of Epe, Chief Shakiru Akanni Bamu.

Other dignitaries included First Lady Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Chief Justice Olarewaju Alogba, Sheikh Muyideen Bello, House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Lagos white cap chiefs, who represented Eleko Rilwan Akiolu; Senator Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun, former Deputy Governor Sarah Sosan, industrialist Chief Rasak Okoya and wife, Dr. Folasade, Otunba Lateef Olufemi Pedro, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Kolade Alabi, Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde, Ogun State Deputy Governor Salako Oyedele, Tunde Alade Balogun, House of Representatives members James Faleke, Katilat Ogbara, Wale Hameed and Lanre Oshun;  Senator Ganiyu Solomon, Abiodun Mafe, Iyaloja of Lagos Chief Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, Information and Strategy Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso, former Industry Minister Mrs. Onikepo Akande, Sola Giwa, retired Police Assistant Inspector-General Hakeem Odumosu, Jide Obanikoro, Admiral Jibril Ayinla, Bayo Ajisebutu, Pa Rotinwa, Mrs. Emmanuela Fashola, Rasak Ajala, Dr. Muiz Banire, Sesan Daini, and Jelili Animasahun.

Other family friends and old school mates from Baptist Olivet, Oyo, and the premier University of Ibadan were in a joyous mood. The programme of event was loaded. In the booklet were tributes by eminent Nigerians who testified to the celebrator’s worth and feats as an accomplished public servant.

Leading the officiating Muslim clerics at the event was the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaiman Abu-Nollah. The Christian priests were led by the chairman of Lagos State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rt. Rev. Stephen Adegbite. There were readings ftom the Quran, words of exhortation by the Sheiks-Sulaimon Faruq Onikijipa, Ustaz Abfulhakeen Lawal and Pastor Femi Faseru of KICC, Maryland, Ikeja.

Lectures were given by Dr. SheikhAbdulRahman Lawal on “Rearing our children with the fear of Allah” and by Dr. Sheikk Zaheed Timehin on “Showing gratitude to Allah in relation to our communal intetaction.”

Special prayers were offered for the governor, deputy governor and his family, members of the State Executive Council, the House of Assembly,  the Judiciary and the people of Lagos.

Ustaz Lawal described the birthday as a moment of thanksgiving, reflection and assessment. Turning to the deputy governor, he said:”You got to 60 through the mercy of God. Forgive those who have wronged you. Dont forget your parents. Pray for them.”

Adegbite, who thanked God for the governor “and the peace we enjoy in Lagos,” congratulated Hamzat, saying:”60 is diamond. Gold is for ever.”

The priest hailed the deputy governor as a product of a great background and applauded his sense of friendliness, humility and tenderness, nothing that, not only was he born by a good father, he has also developed good character.

Echoing him, Alhaja Maryam Bisi, who spoke on behalf of the family, described Hamzat as a kind and compassionate person, stressing that he is very nice to the extended family.

Faseru paid tribute to KOH, “ a successful father, husband and leader, who has achieved so much through the grace of God.” He urged him to lift up people “for stretch.”

“Don’t wine down at 60. Refine, re-engage. It is not yet time to relax,” he added.

All those who work in the Office of Deputy Governor also came with messages that validated the evidence of good traits. They were decked in a uniform attire befitting the occassion, dancing and singing. They described their boss as a God-fearing man; noble, humble; a good listener and a man who has knack for details and “ works with data, which helps in decision making.”

Timehin, who held the audience captive by his lecture, stressed the value of thanksgiving,  saying that “only those who know God can thank God.”

He stressed: “Life is full of ups and downs. Thanksgiving through casual speech and thanksgiving through comprehensive behaviour are good. Hamzat has to thank God. How many blessings of God can he deny?

“Thanksgiving entails the extension of a duty of care to the needy in the society. In every position you are, you have to thank God. The poor man sees the  mad man and thank God. The mad man sees the corpes and thank God.”

The university teacher urged Hamzat to always thank God for his father, who taught him courage, wisdom and hardwork. “You need to thank God for survival and excelling among your peers,” he added.

To the audience, Timehin said:”Learn to give thanks always.”

Lawal’s lecture on child rearing with the fear of Allah was inspiring. He drew attention to the “G-Z,” which he described as a dangerous breed, who deserve special nurturing. Alluding to the Quran,  he said patents should nurture their children based on Islamic teachings.

He added:”If they are not well brought up, outsiders who do not love them like us will snatch them from us. They deserve special care at adolescence. “

In Lawal’s view, parents should be role models. He lamented the eclipse of communal parenting. He said children should be brought up to respect elders.

The university don said breastfeeding is important and mothers should not shy away from it. He called for the inclusion of moral and religious studies into the curriculum.

Lawal said the teaching of etiquette to children, particularly dressing, manner of speech and walking, and how girls should sit, is also important.

“Children should be trained not to tell lies. It can lead to perdition,” he warned.

The events brought a lot of people who have not seen for a long time. For the old students of Hamzat’s alma mater, it was a reunion of sorts.

There was much to eat and drink. An Islamic musician took the stage. Many milled around the top table for handshakes. Overwhelmed with joy, tributes, huggings, patting at the back, and photo sessions, the celebrator and celebrants nearly forgot to cut the birthday cake.

An elated Hamzat thanked God for His goodness and mercies. He thanked his wife, Remi, who he described as his shock absorber. He praised Sanwo-Olu for his dedication, thoroughness and passion for service delivery, saying:”Governor says we must do the Fourth Mainland Bridge. I said where would the money come from. He replied that we must look for it by all means. I thank him for his passion. Lagos is the first to have a city rail.”

Hamzat also thanked Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, distinguished medical doctor and first lady, for her passion for the state.

The deputy governor reflected on the state of the nation. “Governancecis hard. It is not easy to rule,” he said. Therefore,he urged Nigerians to pray for the success of the Bola Tinubu administration in its efforts to reposition the country.

“Nigeria has broken its knees. Asiwaju is doing a surgical operation. Asiwaju Tinubu is well known for his capability. We pray to God to enable him fix the country,” he said.

Hamzat opens road, kicks off trauma centre

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has opened Lambo Lasunwon Road in Ikorodu and kicked off construction of a 40-bed Trauma Centre at the General Hospital.

The projects were facilitated by House of Representatives member, Babajimi Benson.

Hamzat praised him for his commitment to development, and pledged the state’s resolve to building a secondary school in the community.

“Ikorodu has received the largest chunk of infrastructural projects, with N26 billion in compensation to residents and property owners on Isawo, Igbogbo, and Gberigbe roads.

“We did not have a trauma centre, but in nine months, the project would be completed and inaugurated.

“We do not pray for emergencies but we should plan and be prepared the unexpected,”  Hamzat said.

Benson, chair of House Committee on Defence, underscored importance of the road and trauma centre projects.

He urged residents to take ownership of them, adding the road connects 12 community development areas and four communities.

“The newly commissioned Lambo Lasunwon road will bring economic opportunities to these communities,” he said.

Oba Kabiru Shotobi, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, thanked the state while appealing for more projects, especially the completion of the ultra-modern central market.

Managing Director Ikorodu General Hospital, Dr Taiwo Hassan, noted that the trauma centre would reduce the mortality rate.

He said 23,000 patients visit the hospital every month, adding that 16,000 of them have trauma-related issues.

“We thank the lawmaker because this centre will go a long way in reducing the mortality rate,” he said.

  • Nigeria will surmount challenges, Hamzat assures

Nigeria will surmount challenges, Hamzat assures

Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has assured youths there is hope for them despite the challenges facing the country.

He urged them to take advantage of opportunities available to them to become self-reliant.

The Deputy Governor spoke at a National Youth Symposium with the theme ‘Nigeria: Guiding the Youth on the path to self-reliance’, as part of activities to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Hamzat said the youths should see beyond current national challenges and take advantage of the country’s numerous opportunities.

He noted that youths have continued to excel in science, medicine, and music, among others on the world stage.

He said: “We must engage and encourage our youths. These are pivotal moments in Nigeria. Many have lost hope in reversing negative trends. It’s not right that our youths have no future. I am upbeat and optimistic about this country because of our youths.

“Our music keeps the world dancing. Creativity in technology by our youths has soared very high. Your stars keep shining in the world of football. Nigerians are heading everywhere in the world. We must not allow negativity to define us, we must define ourselves. I salute the courage, resilience and tenacity of our young people.”

Hamzat, who admitted the country is facing socio-economic challenges and insecurity, restated that despite the issues, foreigners were coming into the country to invest and make money.

“Our problems are surmountable and there are opportunities there. What is it that foreigners are seeing that we are not seeing? We must shine our eyes. We must look back at our history. Our youths are very dynamic” Hamzat said.

Former Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU) Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun (SAN), who spoke on ‘Why are we here’, noted that despite the challenges in the country, there were many untapped resources for youths to be self-reliant.

“You are not looking at any individual, you are looking at your own resourcefulness and resilience to take you through. The youths must learn not to depend on the system around them, but on their own resourcefulness and resilience,” he said.

Fagbohun also urged the youths to emulate the Deputy Governor by being exemplary in their dealings.

An IT expert, Dr Stanley Muoneke, called on youths to learn various IT skills to explore opportunities to make them succeed.

He said knowledge was important, ‘but there is a need for youths to have mentors and coaches to make them face the challenges that the sector might present to them’.

Muoneke challenged the youths to do self assessment to be able to determine their areas of strength.

The Executive Secretary, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Dr Rabiu Olowo, reiterated that knowledge was key to success.

He also urged the youths to stop complaining about the economy, but instead seize the opportunities existing within the same economy.

An entrepreneur, Dr Funmilola Tella,  called on youths to invest in themselves and their money in profitable ventures, while a youth entrepreneur and shoemaker, Ms Zainab Alayande, said knowledge of any field of interest was important to succeed.

  • Hamzat: Prince and public officer @ 60

Hamzat: Prince and public officer @ 60

As Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat marks his 60th birthday today, Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU extols the virtues of the consummate scholar, technocrat and astute politician who has been a partner in progress with his boss, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

By 2027, he would be making history as the longest serving deputy governor of Lagos State, unlike his predecessors in the office: Dr. Idiat Adebule, Mrs. Tawakalitu Orelope-Adefulire, Princess Sarah Sosan, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, Otunba Olufemi Pedro, Senator Kofo Akerele-Bucknor, Mrs. Aderoju Ojikutu, Mrs.Latifat Okunnu and Alhaji Rafiu Jafojo.

He rose to political fame, leaning on his solid background. That family connection also became an added advantage as he climbed the hierarchical ladder in the corridor of power. Brilliant, gifted, versatile and serious minded, he has the knack for details and objectivity as a scholar, technocrat and now as an politician and public officer.

It may be true that the brand of Lagos city politics is partly designed for the projection of the children of aristocrats and legends. But what has sustained the prince, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, is proper conduct; the power of ideas and incisive wit, uncanny knowledge, skills, sagacity, experience, self-confidence and capacity to add value.

As he turned 60 yesterday, Hamzat had cause to thank God for divine grace and mercies. The highlight of the birthday was a thanksgiving service and prayer session at the Lagos State Secretariat Community Mosque at Alausa, Ikeja.

Since 2005 when he joined the Tinubu administration in the Centre of Excellence as Commissioner for Science and Technology, after a brief stint at Oando, he has been a key player in state politics and governance. Having put his hand on the plough, he has not looked back. His Excellency Dr. Hamzat’s feat now appears to have surpassed that of his illustrious father, Oba Olatunji Hamzat, Second Republic House of Assembly member and Transport Commissioner, Alliance for Democracy (AD) National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Leader of Justice Forum, and Governance Advisory Council (GAC) member.

Pa Hamzat groomed many actors who rose to stardom. An example is Dr. Muiz Banire, who was a member of the State Executive Council for 12 years before serving at the national level as All Progressives Congress (APC) National Legal Adviser and Chairman of an important board. In his memoir: ‘Reflections of a public man,’ the eminent politician also supported his sons’ foray into politics based on their qualifications and ability to make meaningful contributions to the society. One of them, AbdulGaniyu made it to the House of Representatives from Mushin Constituency on the platform of AD. Another one, Olatunbosun, won the House of Representatives primary in Ifako-Ijaye, but the ticket was given to his rival, Femi Onimole.

In the book, Pa Hamzat made a reference to his promising son, Obafemi, with fondness, stating that “Dr. K.O. Hamzat has a Ph.D in Agricultural Engineering and still carries out his professional pursuits in the Unites States.”

Untimately, the agric engineer became the man of the future. So powerful and influential was the patriarch that once the Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stood up to announce his son as running mate to Babajide Sanwo-Olu ahead of 2019 governorship poll that elders who still wanted to plead the case of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for a second term during the GAC meeting dropped the idea. As a party stalwart later disclosed: “Pleading Ambode’s case at that time would be injurious to Pa Hamzat who occupied a pre-eminent position at the meeting and whose son, Femi, had been tipped for deputy governor.”

Dr. Hamzat was a kitchen cabinet member of the Babatunde Fashola administration for eight years, and he also served as Special Adviser to the former Power, Works and Housing Minister before returning to Lagos to become deputy governor.

As a public officer, there are testimonies about his worth, performance and profile as a workaholic, a man of honour and integrity, and believer in the cult of efficiency. He avoids scandals. He is never at the centre of controversy.

A consummate debater and lover of facts and statistics, his contributions during the weekly state executive council meetings are rubost and lucid, a source said. More important is his ability to move beyond theories and translate ideas into action. Whenever the history of infrastructural development in Lagos is written, the Hamzats will deserve more than honourable mention; the father being the commissioner when the train project was first  initiated by former Governor Lateef Jakande, and the son being the works commissioner who still tackles infrastructural deficits in the state.

Bubbling with ambition, Hamzat eyed the front seat on two occasions, but without success. The coast  was not clear. He never rocked the boat, but maintained fidelity to the party and the political structure that has the wherewithal to install.

As deputy governor, he is perceived as a strong pillar behind the Sanwo-Olu government. In other states, deputy governors are treated as spare tyres. In Lagos, they are effectively engaged, more or less, as ‘senior commissioners.’ There is no idleness. There is much work to do in Lagos.  So far, there is no sign of governor/deputy governor rift known to the public in the last five years in Lagos State. Hamzat has been described as a partner in progress with his boss. Thus, there is peace in the party and there is harmony in government. However, it was a measure of respect the governor of Lagos had for his deputy when he said “the state now has a two-man governor.”

In presidential democracy, the president and governor are “all in all.” For example, while the president is Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, the 1999 Constitution does not treat the vice president as deputy commander-in-chief. Deputy governors are expected to be sensitive to these constitutional limitations, despite their political stature. That utter sensitivity, maturity and sense of realism may be the baseline for political survival.

The duo of Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat present a sort of interesting drama about fate and destiny. A party source said while Sanwo-Olu, who never nursed a governorship ambition, was inclined to supporting governorship aspirant Hamzat back then, fate rearranged the fortune, making the older Hamzat to now team up with his affectionate younger brother to take the state to greater heights. They are doing this through the effective implementation of the THEMES agenda that has made Lagos a reference point in infrastructural development and good governance.

Also, for partisan reason, there is caucus and religious balancing dictated by the circumstances of Lagos APC, as underscored by the Christian/Muslim ticket, which is not a serious issue in Lagos and Southwest, and the pairing of “Justice Forum” with “Mandate” in the Lagos State Government.

Life goes on for Dr. Hamzat at 60, having achieved what other patriots in the party and the state could not achieve for years. He is still aiming high like all ambitious mortars who have high achievement orientation and motivation. He peeps into the future with optimism and clarity of thoughts. The future belongs to God.

The deputy governor was born on September 19, 1964 in Lagos to the late Oba Hamzat, Olu of Afowowa Sogaade. His mother was the late Alhaja Kehinde Hamzat, who was from Iga Egbe in Lagos Island.

Dr. Hamzat attended Odu Abore Memorial Primary School, Mushin, Lagos State and Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo State. He attended the University of Ibadan where he graduated with a B.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering (1986) and a Masters in Agricultural Engineering (1988). In 1992, he graduated from Cranfield University, England, with a Ph.D in System Process Engineering, becoming the first student in the department to complete his doctorate within three years. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education Programme.

An accomplished academic and a technocrat of proven ability, Dr. Hamzat’s career has seen him work in both the private and public sector with experience in organizations such as RTP Consulting Services, City of New York, Columbia University, Merrill Lynch Inc, Morgan Stanley and Oando Plc., as Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Group Head, IT Strategy of Oando Plc, Lagos.

Hamzat was Commissioner for Science and Technology during the tenure of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in August 2005.

He was reappointed Commissioner for Science and Technology by Governor Babatunde Fashola in 2007  because of his comprehensive roll-out plan of designed initiatives that permanently changed the face of data and record keeping in the state.

Hamzat introduced and championed the automation of government processes, which changed and improved the way Public Servants carried out their operations and eradicated ghost workers through the implementation of enterprise resource planning.

In 2011,  was appointed Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, a position he held till May 2015.

As commissioner he was responsible for many civil and construction works in the state. His achievements include the completion of the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge linking Admiralty Way to Bourdillon Road, Nigeria’s first cable-stayed bridge and the construction of the Lekki Expressway with the upgrade, expansion and maintenance of approximately 50km of the Lekki-Epe Expressway (Phase I), and construction of Yaya Abatan road, Cemetry Road in Ajeromi Ifelodun, Expansion of Lagos Badagry expressway with a rail (blue line) and other infrastructures across the State.

For his extraordinary performance and technical abilities, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Minister for Power, Works and Housing appointed him as his Special Adviser Technical. It meant that from January 2016 to August 2018, Hamzat was Adviser to the minister on roads and other infrastructure assets. Also, he served as a consultant to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on public infrastructure such as Architectural designs, Structural designs, Quantity surveying, Mechanical and Engineering devices.

His scope of assignment also extended to Quality control of Civil Engineering and Building Projects, Planning, Designing and Implementation of Infrastructure Programme as well as Rehabilitation and Maintenance of Roads & Bridges and Research znd Development.

In October 2018, Sanwo-Olu, the APC candidate, picked Hamzat as his running mate for the 2019 poll. As a team, they had a resounding victory at the polls.

Dr. Hamzat a family man. His marriage to Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, which is another contribution to the cause of monogamy in the modern world, is blessed with promising children.

Hamzat: Prince and public officer at 60

As Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr.

It may be true that the brand of Lagos city politics is partly designed for the projection of the children of
    aristocrats and legends.

But what has sustained the prince, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, is proper conduct; the power of ideas and incisive wit, uncanny knowledge, skills, sagacity, experience, self-confidence and capacity to add value.

As he turns 60 today, Hamzat has cause to thank God for divine grace and mercies.

The highlight of the birthday is a thanksgiving service and prayer session at the Lagos State Secretariat Community Mosque at Alausa, Ikeja.

Hamzat to Army recruits: exhibit professionalism

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Hamzat yesterday admonished the state candidates for the 87th Regular Recruit intake of the Nigerian Army to be good representatives of the state.

Hamzat said they should never lose their heads.

The Deputy Governor gave the charge during his visitation to the candidates at the Military Cantonment Ikeja, urging them to always remember their homes and upbringing, and be rest assured that their state is behind them.

While expressing his happiness for the enlistment, Hamzat urged them to remain composed and level-headed at all times, “never forget your roots and the values that will shape your character, remember the ‘Omoluabi’ ethos in us as Yoruba, which should be taken to the military, showing that you can build a country that is better than the ones our fathers have built and that is capable of making you a better soldier”.

The deputy governor advised them to be more determined, noting that everything in life requires determination, stressing that it is important they represent their state and country well.

“Nigeria is the only country we have and it must be sustained, and anyone who helps to sustain one’s country is always rewarded even with the creator,’’ he added.

He assured them that the state is behind them.

Hamzat also assured them further that they are in good hands, and that the Nigerian Army is a professional institution. Adding that the Nigerian Army is an evolving system, which is getting better.

“It is more advanced than before, more technologically grown, and I assure you that the experience you will have will be better than one the officials that precede you had,” he said.

He therefore prayed that they would continue to succeed and become better soldiers than those they met before.

Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, reiterated the commitment of the state government to the prioritisation of the welfare of the Lagos State Candidates, noting that this is the first time the Lagos State Candidates have had it so good.

She added that the government deliberately provided conducive accommodation, feeding, and other welfare packages to ensure that the candidates experienced unusual welfare.
