  • Newspaper vendor hangs self

A 42-year-old newspaper vendor, identified as Amaechi, was yesterday found dead.

He hanged himself in his room.

Although not much could be ascertained about the deceased’s personality, The Nation gathered that Amaechi,  described as a rather withdrawn person, as he hardly interacted with his neighbours, was last seen on Monday.

One of his co-tenants said he was an indigene of Kwale in Delta State,

He said: “We saw him last on Monday when he was leaving the house. Nobody knew when he returned. We never knew he had hanged himself in his room. It was this morning, when we smelled a pungent odour, that we suspected foul play.”

Another source, who pleaded anonymity, said Amaechi hardly interacted with people.

Police spokesman Chris Orisewezie said he was informed of the incident, but the information was sketchy.

He said investigation into the incident would be made later.

  • Dad hangs self after killing his four children

ALESA, a community near Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, was yesterday the scene of horror sparked by a strange family tragedy.

A resident, Achibong Patrick, strangled his four children, who were asleep.

Achibong, 35, killed his children after chasing his hairdresser wife away from their two-room apartment.

The Nation learnt that after killing the children, aged one, three, five and eight, he set his home on fire and hanged himself.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 1am.

A source said Achibong’s wife, who was running away, shouted that her husband, a native of Ogoja in Cross River State, was after her and their children, but before neighbours could intervene, the evil deed had been done.

A neighbour, who spoke in confidence, said Achibong was notorious for beating up his wife.

He said the woman had attempted to seek divorce, which the man got wind of, leading to the sad incident.

The source said when the wife later returned home, she saw the bodies of members of her family and the burnt flat.

She was taken to an unknown destination by sympathisers.

The police have evacuated the bodies and deposited them in a mortuary.

Police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incident on the phone.

When asked if anybody had been arrested, he said: “Who are you going to arrest? The man chased away his wife before killing their four children. He did not stop at killing the children; he set his house ablaze before hanging himself.”

  • Man hangs self in Somolu

The decomposing body of a 46-year-old man, Kola Shotunde, was at the weekend, found dangling from the ceiling in his apartment.

The incident occurred at Ayepe Avenue by Okesuna Bus Stop, Somolu, Lagos Mainland.

The deceased, a lone occupant of his apartment, was said to have been depressed since the death of his mother. He had no wife or child.

It was gathered that Shotunde’s neighbours had perceived disturbing odour from his apartment and could not reach him to know what the problem was.

They were said to have knocked on his door several times on Friday night without response, which raised suspicion.

According to a source, the neighbours contacted the police and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to report their fear that he might have died inside the house.

“LASEMA and policemen came to the scene and discovered the door was locked from inside. So, his brother was invited before the door was forced open. As soon as it was opened, Shotunde’s body was seen hanging on the ceiling fan.

“It was already smelling, which means he might have died some days back. It was around 9pm on Friday that the door was opened.

“The last time anyone saw him was Monday or Tuesday. When the odour was coming from his apartment, people were looking for him to find out what was wrong. That was when people started suspecting he might have died.

“Before his corpse was evacuated, his family members performed some cleansing.”

Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP), confirmed the incident, adding that the deceased’s brother told the police that he had been sick.

Man, 82, hangs self in Ondo

The lifeless body of an octogenarian, identified as Adegoke Oriola, was at the weekend discovered in Ondo town.

He reportedly hung himself with a rope fastened to a ceiling fan inside his bedroom at Ayeyemi Street.

She reportedly discovered her father’s body when she went to his room to check up on him.

Police sources said there was no suicide note.

Some spiritualists and traditional worshippers removed the body for burial.

Family sources said the 82-year-old may have committed suicide as a result of one of his daughter’s protracted illness on which he has spent all his money without cure.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Enuowa, Kunle Omisakin, said the report on the incident has been forwarded to the state police command, Akure.

  • Boy, 12, hangs self in Lagos neighbourhood

    •’Police should investigate properly’

Residents of Funmilola Judge Street, Oko Oba, Agege, Lagos, were shocked beyond words penultimate Friday when the body of a 12-year-old furniture apprentice, simply identified as Hassan, was seen dangling in a shop.

An impeccable source, who asked not to be named, recalled the incident, saying that the boy had been reprimanded by his boss for damaging a piece of furniture that belongs to a customer.

“Hassan (deceased) was scolded by his boss for damaging a chair belonging to a customer. His boss, who is married to his sister, then sent words to the boy’s parents in Oyo State, asking them to pay for the cost of the chair damaged by their son.”

It was gathered that  a few days before the incident, Hassan’s father begged his boss  to allow him to travel to Oyo so he can give him the money, but the boss, simply identified as Taofik, felt that it was a ploy to take the boy from him.

“It was a few days after his boss turned down his father’s request for the boy to come to Oyo State for the money requested that Hassan killed himself.

“Men of the Oko Oba Police Station later evacuated the body, while some community leaders were also interrogated at the station.”

Some eyewitnesses, however, believed that there was more to the boy’s death than meets the eyes.

A resident, who spoke in confidence with our reporter, explained that the circumstances surrounding the discovery of Hassan’s body deserve serious investigation.

His body was found dangling around 11 am on the day of the incident. Some of us don’t believe that he killed himself by hanging because of the condition we met his body.

“From what we saw of his body, he might have been killed before his body was hanged because his legs were on the ground when his body was found and it did not appear that he struggled while dying.”

The boy’s parents have since been informed of his death, while investigation on the matter continues.

The spokesman of Lagos Police Command, Mr Kenneth Nwosu, promised to return our calls for his comments, but failed to do so.
