  • Happy days here again for Osun women

Happy days here again for Osun women

Thousands of women stormed the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, Osun State Thursday last week when Governor Rauf Aregbesola launched a special empowerment scheme for women who are heads of their households. ADETUTU AUDU reports that a cheque of N375m was given out to the jubilant women.

The jubilant crowd mostly of women that converged on the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, capital of Osun State Thursday last week was an appreciative one. And the women had every cause to be as they showed their appreciation through singing, dancing and prayers for the Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola. Their joy and appreciation were not out of place. That day the Aregbesola administration was giving out N375 million in aid of women who head their respective households in the state.

Apart from giving the women stipend monthly, they will also be trained in vocations common to their area after which at the end of the 12th month, they will each be given a seed money to start small scale business.

The only condition attached to the beneficiary households was that they should make use of government infrastructure – meaning pregnant women in such households should make use of government health facilities while their children attend government schools.

Also, at the event, new ultra-modern hand-held ultrasound diagnostic scanners (touch screen) and mirror-3d (colour) Doppler ultrasound diagnostic scanners were launched.

Speaking at the event, Governor Aregbesola restated the commitment of his administration to making life better for the generality of the people of the state. “With all sense of modesty, I want to say that there is no household in Osun State that our administration has not touched positively,” he said.

According the governor, the programme being launched was the pilot programme assuring that it will spread to other local government areas in the state.

“You have not seen anything yet. We want to ensure that poverty is reduced to the barest minimum in this state. That is why our programme is anchored on the development of our people,” he assured.

Speaking on the scanners, the governor stated that they were procured to ensure reduction in maternal mortality and reduce incidence of stroke among the populace.

“The first scanner will scan pregnant women and detect the position of the unborn baby for any necessary medical action if there is need, while the second scanner detects early stroke symptoms in people for early medication,” Aregbesola explained.

The governor was emphatic on the fact that: “pregnant women and others that will make use of these facilities will not pay any money – it is free”.

The programme climaxed with the handing over of a  N375 million cheque to the heads of the benefitting households and the commissioning of the ultra-modern, ultrasound scanners.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Aregbesola on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Honourable Abdullah Adeyanju Binuyo, under whose office the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme was executed, described it as a win, win situation for the people.

“From whichever way you look at it, the people are the winners. They are not only the direct beneficiaries but also all the positive multiplier effects of the programme come back as plus for the people,” the SSA said.

He explained further: “we give out N5,000 monthly to the head of each benefitting household who is a woman. That is the cash aspect. Residents of the benefitting households must make use of government facilities that is the condition. The transfer aspect is that the money given out will be spent in the state; that is ploughing back the money into the state economy thereby contributing to its development. At the end of the 12th month, each head of the benefitting household will get N100,000 to start a small scale businesses of their own. Remember that the pregnant women are treated free at government hospitals while the children enjoy not only free education but they also get free school uniform and are fed free. So the people are the ultimate winners of this programme”.

Explaining further, the state Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Mofolake Adegboyega, stated that the benefitting households were not picked at random. “They were selected through a thorough research by the consultant we employed to do so and the woman is a Professor from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife. It took her six months of crisscrossing the nooks and crannies of this state to arrive at the list of beneficiaries,” she explained.

According to her, the pilot scheme involved five local government areas in the state with 100 from each local government. A total of 2,250 households will benefit from this programme,” she said.

  • Bosso happy with El-Kanemi’s new home venue

Bosso happy with El-Kanemi’s new home venue

The Head Coach of Abia Warriors FC, Ladan Bosso, yesterday expressed happiness over the change of venue for all the home matches of El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri to Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the League Management Company (LMC) shifted the venue indefinitely, pending when full security would return to Borno.

With the change of venue, the LMC had also announced March 26 for the postponed week 2 Globacom League match between El-Kanemi Warriors and Abia Warriors.

Bosso told NAN in Lagos that he was happy about the change of venue and was expecting a good game against the Maiduguri side. He said that he was anticipating a balanced game because of the neutral ground.

“We are ready for the game and any time we are given the go ahead to play, we will play. I’m happy the tie has been taken away from the war-prone zone and with my understanding of Kanow, we will surely overwhelm our hosts,’’ he said.

Bosso said he was not underestimating El-Kanemi but that the change of venue would definitely be a minus for the Maiduguri-based club.

“El-Kanemi are a good side and with my understanding of the club, I’m sure we will prevail. It’s going to be a balanced game and we are ready for the club,’’ Bosso said.

Abia Warriors currently occupies the 4th position on the league log after winning their season opener against Kaduna United.

EMMANUEL EMENIKE: I was not happy in Russia

Nigeria international Emmanuel Emenike has expressed delight over the reelection of Aziz Yildirim as the President of Fenerbahce.

Yildirim was elected as the supremo of the Yellow Canaries earlier this month to continue his 15-year romance with the club.

“As a team, we will continue on our way, and our goals. I am very happy that our president Aziz Yildirim was re-elected. President brings to Fenerbahce all the material and spiritual values, large and indisputable. All of us are aware of that. Would like to congratulate him,” Emmanuel Emenike told the official Fenerbahce magazine.

The 26-year-old signed a multi – year contract with the Istanbul giants after spending two seasons with Russian Premier League outfit Spartak Moscow.

And the striker has now said that he fancied a return to Turkey due to the cultural differences.

“Russia is a very different experience for me. Russian people are different! Spartak Moscow, the club, my trainer, my team-mates and everyone who works there, I tried to feel at home, worked hard. But to speak frankly, I was not happy. Just kept doing my job professionally,” he stated.

Emmanuel Emenike, who has netted 4 goals in his last 3 Super League games, is a fan of the Ivorian forward Didier Drogba, who is on the payroll of another Istanbul team Galatasaray.

  • Akeredolu, Agbaje, others happy

    Akeredolu, Agbaje, others happy

Some prominent lawyers and human rights activists yesterday hailed the release of Mike Ozekhome (SAN.

They also urged the government to intensify efforts in addressing security challenges.

Ozekhome was abducted on August 23 at Ehor, near Benin City, in Edo State.

Former Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) President Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, in a statement, said: “I am happy that regardless of the circumstances leading to his eventual regain of personal liberty, he has joined his family, though psychologically bruised, apparently physically unhurt.

“This unfortunate incident also, with greater intensity, wells up an emotion of extreme anger in the minds of those who feel genuinely concerned about our precarious state as citizens of this country as regards security.

“It appears that kidnappers are now emboldened to grab anyone at anytime. They demand ransom, which confirms pure economic consideration as being responsible for the spread of this nefarious venture.

The array of victims also indicates that nobody is immune from this current scourge.

“This is the time when all Nigerians, professional associations, trade unions, market women and students must act collectively with a view to confronting this menace.

“I recollect that the NBA under my leadership was vociferous in condemning this menace. We were never tired of reminding the government that the welfare of the people should be the primary reason for governance. That approach which earned us respect.

We must actively engage this gover.nment to take the issue of security more seriously.

Taiwo Taiwo, NBA Chairman, Lagos branch, told NAN that the release was a huge relief for the legal profession.

“We are happy about the release, but we should not lose sight of the fact that there is so much insecurity in the nation.

“The government must double its efforts to arrest the incessant kidnapping of Nigerians,” Taiwo said.

A lawyer and human rights activist, Fred Agbaje, said he was disappointed with the time it took to secure Ozekhome’s release.

Agbaje said: “We are happy that he has been released, but we are disappointed with the efforts of our security operatives.”

He urged government at all levels to take urgent steps to address the issue of the welfare of Nigerians.

Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni, Executive Director, Socioeconomic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a human rights group, also expressed a similar view.

Mumuni said: “The point that should be made, in spite of the release of Ozekhome and others who had been kidnapped in the past, is that we need to improve our security apparatus.

“This is the only way to attract foreign investments into the country, because nobody would want to invest in an unsafe environment.”

  • Sodje happy to be back

    Sodje happy to be back

Sam Sodje could be forgiven for a little rustiness against Tranmere.

The centre-back was playing for the first time since he was sent off at Oldham in February.

But he produced a commanding display alongside Gabor Gyepes at the heart of the Blues defence.

Sodje lasted 81 minutes of the 1-0 victory before being replaced by Ricardo Rocha and was delighted to be able to celebrate the first win of his Pompey career.

He said: “Slotting into a winning team isn’t too difficult and it felt great to come back into the side.

“As an experienced player I tried to keep my game simple and make sure I helped the team – after watching from the sidelines for a while I was happy to be back.

“Anyone who knows my game will understand that I just want to defend – it was tough, but the boys stood up to the challenge.

“Once we got in front we knew that Tranmere would do everything possible to get back on level terms, especially against a team chasing promotion.

“We expected that, but we did enough to hold on, which was such a great feeling.

“You don’t want to be losing – when I first came we struggled to get results and it wasn’t a happy place.

“Now I’m so pleased to be part of a fighting team that wants to win every single time we step onto the pitch.”

Pompey’s performance was full of fight, but Sodje is pleased to see the side’s quality also starting to shine through.

He said: “When I first started training with the players, I was surprised that we weren’t winning games.

“It really irritated me and we worked so hard in training to put it right – now you can see that quality.

“We have many good players all over the pitch who are in really good form at the moment.

“Patrick Agyemang and David Connolly always perform well in training – they work well as a pairing and are extremely dedicated professionals.

“We also have a great spine in midfield, thanks to Johnny Ertl and Therry Racon.

“Therry is a typical continental footballer in the way he likes to get on the ball. It makes it a lot easier for us defenders as he always wants possession.

“Johnny just never stops running and is a great presence in the centre of midfield, so we have a good mixture there.”

The Technical Adviser of Warri Wolves, Solomon Ogbeide, has described the signing of former Flying Eagles Star, John Owoeri, A.K.A.Papa as a dream come true and revealed that it will make his team a difficult one to handle when the league kicks off.

According to the Media Officer of the Club, Etu Moses, the coming of Owoeri will add bite to the attack while defenders will only have themselves to blame at the end of the day.

I will always advise him on what to do so I don’t envisage any problem from him. He is one of the best players around and I see him living up to expectations, so fans should watch out for him come next season,” Said Ogbeide who has gradually settled down in the oil rich city of Warri.
