  • Community youths beat up man harassing girl

A thirty-five-year-old and father of three in Mkpuma, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Ejike Nwuzor, was at the weekend, caught by villagers for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl.

Nwuzor was caught by a farmer, Oliver Nwegede, who said he was working on his farm when he saw Ejike harassing the girl.

Nwegede said the girl’s scream attracted him.

“The girl was struggling with Nwuzor, crying and begging him to leave her. So instead of coming out immediately to rescue her, I hid very well in the bush.

“Nwuzor overpowered the girl and this forced me out of the bush but before I could come out, another man, who might have heard the cry, stormed the scene.

“We took Nwuzor while we got cloth from some women in the farm to cover the victim’s nakedness because her clothes were already torn and then we reported to the villagers,” he said.

The youths paraded Nwuzor round the community, forcing him to dance to disgraceful songs which they chanted. The show lasted for four hours.

He was later tortured by the elders who demanded that he offset the victim’s medical bill with a threat to ostracise him if caught in such dastardly act again.

Narrating her ordeal, the victim said she was returning from an errand and at a lonely place, she heard someone whisper.

“I suddenly saw Ejike Nwuzor Okemini after the whisper; he dragged me into a corner of the bush and told me to pull off my clothes, which I refused.

“Because I did not agree, he started tearing my clothes and pounced on me. A man who saw us ran to the scene and nabbed him. Another man joined and arrested him and got clothes from a woman for me”, the girl said.

Police spokesman Chris Anyanwu said he was yet to receive official report on the matter.

Stop harassing our members, Oyo APC warns PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has warned against the illegal arrests and intimidation of its members by security agents on the orders of influential leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, yesterday,  the party condemned the frequent invitation and detention of some of its members for alleged vandalism of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign billboards in parts of the state.

“For about a month now, the Caretaker Chairman of Oyo West Local Government Area, Adesoji Ojoawo and other members of our party have been regular visitors to the police headquarters in Ibadan for allegedly destroying PDP billboards even after proving their innocence.

“The council boss was again invited last Friday on the same issue and he has since been detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“It has been established that the billboard, in question, may have been damaged by heavy winds. These same security agents have failed to act on formal reports of damage done to billboards of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), Sen. Abiola Ajimobi and other APC candidates.

“As part of their usual practice, some PDP elements in the state would not spare any effort to intimidate, harass and witch-hunt APC members perceived to be a thorn in their flesh.

“Having failed to utilise the chances at its disposal in the last 16 years, the PDP is faced with the threat of monumental defeat at the polls.

“Some of their notable members are there sponsoring violence against the opposition but there is nobody to checkmate them. On this note, we call on the PDP power mongers as well as their willing security agents to desist from further abuse of privilege and stop heating up the polity.”

  • ‘Stop harassing law-abiding motorcyclists’

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has urged the Police to stop harassing motorcyclists, under the guise of implementing the new Traffic Law.

Fielding questions from House of Assembly Correspondents during the annual Media Meet, at the weekend, he said the lawmakers had been notified of “some unscrupulous men in police uniform who have been needlessly molesting innocent and law-abiding Okada operators.”

“It is therefore very apt to call on the Lagos State Police Command to properly educate its men and officers not to rough handle Okada operators that are already obeying the Traffic Law; under no circumstance should the motorcycles of such persons be confiscated,” he said.

“The truth of the matter really is that the Lagos State House of Assembly has not banned Okada operators from operating on all roads in Lagos. What we did was to restrict the operation of Okada operators to inner city roads where their lives and those of other residents that patronise them would no longer be in danger. This is why we urge all Lagosians to come to terms with this law that is aimed at their safety and security. Let us all stop playing politics with our lives and those of our children in this matter,” he said.

On epileptic power supply, Ikuforiji said: “It is very sad and unfortunate that we in Nigeria today are still battling to have reliable power supply in our homes and offices. If only former President Olusegun Obasanjo had been more discerning, he ought to have accorded the needed importance and support to the novel and revolutionary plan by the former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, when he, very early in his first term in1999/2000 floated his Independent Power Project, that was meant to generate 370 and 540 Megawatts in its first and second phases.

“But rather than put the interest of the nation first by embracing the Lagos State novel experiment, all that former President Obasanjo did was to frustrate the project. And after undue delay, the project was later taken over by the Federal Government in its watered-down form.

“If only that project had been given the much-needed support by the Federal Government, Lagosians would have by now been through with epileptic power supply. It is therefore my opinion that state governments should henceforth be allowed to generate electricity in the country if they so wish.”

  • Activist to Mimiko: stop harassing journalists

Activist to Mimiko: stop harassing journalists

Rrights activist, Mr Morakinyo Ogele, yesterday urged the ruling Labour Party (LP) in Ondo State to stop harassing journalists and private media.

Ogele alleged that there were plans to attack some journalists who the government regarded as “unfriendly”.

The lawyer said if the LP administration was popular among the people, it would not resort to harassing people.

He recalled how Governor Olusegun Mimiko used a private radio station, Adaba FM, to pursue his election petition at the tribunal in 2009, “as if he was the owner”.

Ogele said: “Mimiko used Adaba FM as his megaphone between 2007 and 2009, when he got favourable judgment at the Appeal Court, Benin City, (Edo State), against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Governor Olusegun Agagu.

“He and his party, the LP, were completely shut out by government media, particularly the Ondo Radiovision Corporation (OSRC), during the period and relied solely on Adaba FM.

“However, instead of the governor to be appreciative of the gesture, he ordered that a construction company should dig a gully on the only access road to the media organisation. For many months, the station and its workers were made to suffer unnecessarily.”

The activist said the media should be allowed to carry out their duties without molestation, adding that a popular government would not attack them.

He alleged that at a clandestine meeting held outside the state, some notable government officials planned to punish Adaba FM workers for allegedly being hostile to the government.

The activist also alleged that the LP administration wanted to plant incriminating materials on the station’s premises to enable the government arrest its senior management workers.

He threatened to mobilise the masses against any political office holder that intimidates the radio workers or other journalists.

Ogele urged security agents to be wary of the antics of the Mimiko administration to cause violence ahead of next month’s governorship election.

The lawyer has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, over LP’s alleged plan to unleash terror on journalists.

In the September 27 letter, Ogele said the LP had been intimidating the media and opposition parties.

He said: “Some six months ago, the state government directed one of its local contractors to dig a gully on the road leading to Adaba FM. For almost three months, this paralysed its activities while several millions of naira were lost.

“In addition, workers at the station were harassed and intimidated while the General Manager and the station’s Head of News and Current Affairs were summoned by the governor, who warned them to ‘behave’.”

Ogele said series of petitions were sent to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), which led to the closure of the station for weeks.

The lawyer noted that the fresh onslaught on Adaba FM was to incriminate the GM and other principal officers.

He alleged that a meeting was held on September 26 at the home of a commissioner, adding that an arrangement was concluded that large quantities of arms should be deposited on the station’s premises.

Ogele said: “The intimidation against the radio station has been extended to correspondents of The Nation, Peoples’ News, Daily Independent, among others.”

The lawyer also criticised the daily attacks on supporters of ACN governorship candidate Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and those of the PDP’s Olusola Oke.

He urged the police chief to transfer the police commissioner for his alleged inability to provide “unbiased” security for the residents.

Ogele also called for tight security for the radio station and its workers.
