    PSC vows to sanction erring police officers

    The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu, has cautioned police officers deployed to secure polling units during Saturday’s governorship election to avoid any form of misconduct.

    Argungu disclosed that PSC staff have been deployed across the three senatorial zones of the state to monitor police conduct during the election.

    He urged officers on electoral duty to maintain a high level of impartiality and discipline, emphasising that their primary responsibility is to protect both electoral officials and materials.

    The PSC Chairman further directed that police personnel must create a safe and conducive environment for the people of Anambra to exercise their franchise without intimidation or obstruction. He warned that any officer found compromising the rules of engagement would face appropriate sanctions.

    According to Argungu, the Anambra governorship election should serve as a test case for the Nigeria Police Force as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.

    He expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by the Anambra State Police Command, led by Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu, noting that the Commissioner has recently toured all Area Commands and identified flashpoints across the state to ensure a peaceful and credible poll.

    In a statement issued yesterday,  Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC Head of Press and Public Relations, reiterated that the commission will commend officers who display professionalism and commitment during the election while taking disciplinary action against those found wanting.

    “The commission’s staff monitors will operate from the state capital and across the three senatorial districts of the state,” the statement added.

    The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), has expressed shock at what he described as an avoidable death in a petrol tanker explosion that occurred in Niger State, claiming over 76 lives. 

    Argungu called for an improved road safety mechanism in the country, especially concerning the menace of trucks and fuel tankers on the roads. 

    He stated that the gory images of the burnt victims of the explosion were heart-wrenching. 

    Argungu also urged that road safety should be as important as the air we breathe and that those tasked with this responsibility should be alive to their duties.

    According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Head of Press and Public Relations of the PSC, Ikechukwu Ani: “He commiserated with the Government and people of Niger State on this unfortunate development and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased. 

    “He also condoled with the families of others who might have been affected by the fire incident, such as street traders along Dikko Junction and travellers who might have been caught up in the explosion. The PSC Chairman also prayed that God should spare our nation from such calamities.

    N174m bribe rejection: PSC chair hails AIG Fayoade, others in Bayelsa 

    The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), has praised Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade, who oversees Zone 2 Police Command (comprising Lagos and Ogun states), and his officers for rejecting a bribe of $100,000 (approximately N174 million) last week.

    Argungu also commended police officers in the Zone 16 Command headquarters in Bayelsa State for their efforts in recovering N10 million from corrupt colleagues.

    Since assuming office, Argungu has been steadfast in his commitment to eradicating corruption within both the PSC and the Nigeria Police Force. 

    He introduced a whistleblower policy within the Commission and has publicly pledged to be held accountable for his actions, encouraging whistleblowing should he fall short in his duties.

    The PSC chairman expressed his approval of these recent positive actions by police officers, noting that standing against corruption, even in the face of significant temptation, is a critical battle for the nation.

    He described the rejection of the N174 million bribe and the recovery of N10 million as important milestones in reinforcing his zero-tolerance stance on corruption within the police service.

    CSP Ngozi Braide had led her team from Zone 2 police Lagos, to arrest a suspected Internet fraudster, Patrick Akpoguma in Lagos and was directed by AIG Fayoade to courageously play along, collecting a huge sum of S100 000 Dollars an equivalent of N174million in bribe which she subsequently registered as an evidence and arrested the fraudster for investigation.

    According to a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesman of the PSC, Ikechukwu Ani: “DIG Argungu rtd wishes to commend the Inspector General of Police for the current positive dispositions of the Officers and Men against the lure of corruption.

    “He assured that Police Officers who distinguish themselves and take the war against corruption to the next level would in no time be recognised by the Commission and appropriate benefits extended to them.

    “The PSC Chairman said although the Commission will not engage in special promotions, it has the power to give accelerated promotions based on merit and performance.

    “He tasked Police Officers to continue to do their best to advance the nation’s security architecture. DIG Argungu noted that Nigeria must be freed of insurgency and terrorterror.”
