  • Court remands farmer over alleged kidnap of girl, N4m ransom demand

    A Magistrate Court in Minna on Friday ordered the remand in prison custody of a farmer, Jibrin Adamu, for allegedly kidnapping a 19-year-old girl and demanding N4 million ransoms.

    Adamu is standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and kidnapping.

    The Magistrate, Mr Hassan Mohammed, could not take the accused’s plea on grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

    Mohammed directed the police to forward the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.

    He adjourned the matter until May 7 for further mention.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Abdullahi Maiyaki, earlier told the court that the complainant, Alhaji Kampau of Gurara area of Minna, reported the matter to the police on Sept. 10, 2017.

    Maiyaki said the accused person conspired with four others now at large, to invade the complainant’s house and allegedly kidnap his 19-year-old daughter.

    He said the accused persons later demanded N4 million as ransom for the girl’s release.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 97 and 298 of the Penal Code.

  • Court remands man over alleged attempted rape, armed robbery

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of a man, Sadiq Adamu, in prison for alleged attempted rape and armed robbery.

    The accused, who is facing a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and rape, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mr Hassan Mohammed, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison and adjourned the case until April 12 for mention.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Emmanuel Bassa, had told the court that the complainants Abdulmumini Mustapha, Musa Bashiru and an unnamed lady reported the matter at the Bosso Police Station, Minna on Feb.31.

    Bassa said they were returning from a marriage ceremony when the accused and others at large attacked them along Bosso Road in Minna.

    He said that the accused and his accomplices robbed the complainants of two phones and other valuables worth N88,000

    The prosecutor said that Adamu and his cohorts also attempted to rape the lady.

    According to him, when the accused was arrested he was in possession of the two phones.

    “During investigation, the accused confessed to committing the crime along with two other persons now at large,’’ Bassa said.

    He said that the offences contravened Section 298, 95 and 97 of the Penal Code.

    Trader, remanded over alleged theft of satellite dishes

    A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a 26-year-old trader, Hassan Mohammed, over alleged theft of satellite dishes.

    Mohammed, 26, who resides at Gusau road, Sokoto, is facing a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, trespass and stealing.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, ordered the remand of the accused in prison following the prosecution’s request to allow the Police to conclude investigation into the matter.

    Adamu adjourned the case until March 15 for hearing.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpt. Faruk Bala had told the court that the offences were committed in December 2017 along Shinkafi road, Sokoto.

    Bala said that the accused unlawfully entered into the residence of one Bishop Yabugbe, Abdullahi Bliss, Obinna David and Uzoma Sam all of Shinkafi road and stole their satellite dishes all valued at N37, 000.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 349 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Labourer remanded over alleged kidnap of minor

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of a labourer, Samaila Bala, over alleged kidnap of a six-year-old boy.

    Bala is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, theft and kidnapping.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Abdullahi Maiyaki, had told the court that one Mr Shehu Abu reported the matter at the Sarkin Police  Station on December 24, 2017.

    Maiyaki said that the accused and two others, now at large, invaded Abu’s house, kidnapped his six- year-old son and absconded with him to an unknown destination.

    He said that the suspected labourer and the others released the boy after 10 days in captivity.

    The prosecutor said that the accused had previously stormed the complainant’s house and carted away two cows and four sheep.

    He said that the police arrested the accused, having been identified by the boy as one of the people who abducted him.

    Maiyaki told the court the offences contravened Sections 97 and 287 (2) of Niger State laws.

    The accused,  however,  pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor urged the court to remand him in prison custody  to enable police conclude investigation into the matter.

    The Magistrate, Mr Hassan Mohammed, granted the plea, and adjourned the case until February 6 for mention.

    EFCC to Nigerians: Offer confidential information on financial crimes

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC ) has urged Nigerians to give confidential information on financial crimes and misappropriation going on in their areas.

    Mr Johnson Babalola, the Zonal Head of EFCC in South-East, made the plea at the EFCC and Stakeholders’ Walk Against Corruption in Enugu on Monday.

    The Enugu 12-kilometre citywide walk tagged; “Together Break the Corruption Chain’’, was to commemorate the World Anti-Corruption Day.

    December 9 was the World Anti-Corruption Day.

    Babalola, represented by his deputy, Mr Johnson Oshodi, said that the fight against corruption was an all-involving fight, where the commission needed the assistance of other stakeholders and members of the public.

    “We want Nigerians to blow the whistle through feeding the commission with timely and prompt information to nip corruption in the bud and punish its perpetrators anywhere in the country,’’ he said.

    He described corruption as a global phenomenon, adding that its impact and endemic nature had been far-reaching in the country.

    He said that corruption had been crippling the nation’s economy and development.

    “The worst is that it is already stealing what should be left for our future, our children and our children-children and making many young Nigerians to lose hope in the economic system.

    “Every right-thinking Nigerian must stand up and join hands actively with the commission to check this monster and cankerworm,’’ he said.

    In his speech, the EFCC Head of Media, Mr Chris Oluka, lauded the massive turnout of people for the walk, especially corporate organisations that had been identifying with the commission and making its investigative work easy.

    “We are overwhelmed by this show of solidarity, especially the organisations that had been partnering with us in this fight before now,’’ he said.

    Also, Mr Hassan Mohammed, the Zonal Commissioner, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), assured the commission of ICPC’s continuous close working relationship and synergy in information sharing.

    “We will remain committed to the bond between our organisation and EFCC, and we will work together in more aspects of fighting corruption in the country,’’ Mohammed said.

    The Sector Commander of FRSC in Enugu State, Mr Edward Zamber, said that the agency would check all forms of corruption, especially on the highways.

    “In a bid to keep Nigerians safe on the roads, FRSC will ensure exemplary conduct always and shun all forms of inducement in the course of our duty,’’ Zamber, who was represented by Mr Hassan Lawal, said.

    The representative of Diamond Bank Plc, Mr Felix Ezimora, said that the bank would continue to follow the commission’s guidelines in its banking operations.

    “Diamond Bank is known for transparency and excellence; we assure you that we will keep to our good working relationship as well as openness to the commission,’’ Ezimora said.

    Court remands man, 65, for alleged homosexuality in Niger

    A Minna Chief Magistrate’s  Court on Tuesday remanded a 65-year-old man, Patrick Kalu, in prison for allegedly having anal sex with a 15 years old boy.

    The accused who resides in Railway Quarters, Minna, pleaded guilty to the offence.

    The Chief Magistrate, Hassan Mohammed, however, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison and adjourned the case until Jan, 25, 2018.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Abdullahi Maiyaki, had told the court that the accused was arrested on Nov. 8, for having sex through the anus with a 15-year-old boy.

    He said that Kalu was arrested during the act, adding that he had kept the victim in his house for over one year.

    Maiyaki said that the accused lured the unsuspecting victim from Karimo area of Abuja on the pretext of securing him a job.

    He said that the offence contravened Section 284 of the Panel Code Law.

    The section prescribes a 14-year jail term with no option of fine, upon a High Court conviction.

    Court remands eight rape suspects in Minna

    A Minna Grade 1 Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded in prison custody, eight suspects standing trial for raping four minors in Minna.

    Mr Abdullahi Maiyaki, prosecutor for the state Child Rights Protection Agency, told the court that the suspects were arraigned on Oct. 17 for unlawful sexual intercourse with the minors.

    The suspects, according to the prosecutor were; Yahaya Yakuso, 50; Yusuf Idris, 35; Tukur Buhari, 35; Mohammed Yusuf, 25; Musa Ibrahim, 35; Nasir Abubakar, 35; Isah Garba, 29; and Ibrahim, 30.

    He alleged that the suspects lured the teenage girls who hawk wares with N150 or N200 to have canal knowledge of them.

    Abdullahi said that the offence contravenes Section 18, Sub-Section 2 of the Niger state Child Rights Act.

    He said that the offence attracts 21 years imprisonment and pleaded with the court not to grants the accused bail based on the severity of the offence.

    The Chief Magistrate, Hassan Mohammed, ordered the remand of the suspects after they pleaded not guilty to the offence.

    He adjourned the case to Nov. 23 for further mention.

    In her reaction, Mrs Mariam Kolo, Director-General of the state Child Rights Protection Agency, urged the court to give justice to the victims so as to serve as deterrent to others.

    Raping minor, man pleads guilty

    A Minna Grade 1 Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday reserved judgment after a 32-year-old man, Ayuba Salihu, pleaded guilty for raping an eight-year-old girl.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, was arraigned on a charge of rape.

    Mr Abdullahi Mayaki, the prosecutor for the State Child Rights Protection Agency, told the court that the incident occurred on Aug. 31 near Gwari Market in Chanchaga Local Government Area.

    Mayaki said the accused lured the unsuspecting primary school pupil with N100 into the market before assaulting her sexually.

    The offence contravened Section 18, sub-section 2 of Niger State Child Rights Law.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence attracts life imprisonment.

    Chief Magistrate Hassan Mohammed, who convicted the accused as charged, adjourned the case until Sept. 12 for sentence.

    He said the adjournment would also enable the prosecution to get the medical expenses incurred by the girl’s parents.

    Police arraign three for breaking man’s leg

    The Police on Thursday arraigned three men- Samuel Moses, Hassan Mohammed, and Fidelix‎ Edohe , in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, over alleged assault, resulting in the fracturing of the victim’s leg.

    The defendants were docked on charges of joint act, assault and causing grievous hurt.

    The prosecutor, Mr Fidelix Ogbobe, told the court that one John Smith of Police Cantonment, Area 11, Abuja , reported the matter at the Garki Police Station on July 9.

    He said the complainant and his brother, Abubakar Yakubu , were on their way home on the said date, and when they got to Garki 2, they attempted boarding a vehicle.

    He alleged that Moses prevented them from boarding the vehicle. ‎

    Ogbobe further said that when Smith insisted on boarding the vehicle, the defendants jointly assaulted him and used an object to hit his left leg and he sustained a fracture .

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 79, 265 and 246 of the Penal Code.

    All the defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N80, 000 each, with one surety each in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until Aug. 30 for hearing.
