    Havertz in Arsenal training

There had been some concerns over Kai Havertz’s fitness after his struggles with injury this past year.

But the Arsenal forward was out training with the team before the Gunners’ Champions League match against Kairat on Wednesday.

Arsenal are already guaranteed a top-two finish in the league phase so it might be a chance for boss Mikel Arteta to rotate, and also for Havertz to build up his minutes.

The Germany international has played just 59 minutes this term after picking up a knee injury in the opening game of the Premier League season against Manchester United.

Sixteen-year-old centre-back Marli Salmon has also trained with the first team before Wednesday’s game at the Emirates stadium.

There was no sign of Jurrien Timber, William Saliba or Mikel Merino in training so I will ask Arteta about that in his news conference on Tuesday at 13:30 GMT.

Merino, alongside midfielder Declan Rice, are suspended for the match after picking up two yellow cards already during this Champions League campaign.

Arsenal get Havertz’s boost for crunch Newcastle game

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz could feature in their Premier League home game against Newcastle United after recovering from hamstring surgery, manager Mikel Arteta said  as the north London club look to consolidate second place.

Havertz was set to miss the rest of the season when he underwent surgery in February but the Germany forward has fast-tracked his recovery to potentially return for Arsenal in the last two games of the season.

Despite missing more than three months of action, Havertz remains Arsenal’s top scorer with nine league goals this season and 15 in all competitions.

“We’re going to decide that tomorrow. He’s done certain parts of the sessions in the last two days,” Arteta told reporters ahead of Sunday’s game.

“He looks in great shape but the medical staff need to give clearance and how Kai feels. (It’s) unbelievable, it’s a credit to him and the medical staff and they’ve been pushing each other.

“We know how important Kai is for us. He looks in great shape… and you see the transformation on him which is really impressive.”

Arteta said Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli and Jurrien Timber will also be assessed on today.

Havertz scores late goal totake Arsenal top of the table

Arsenal have once again returned to domestic action as a side stronger thanks to the timing of the international break. But all the positivity about how the Gunners might respond from their fortnight off would dissipate quickly in defeat.

However, with the return of both Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard, these are two huge bonuses to an Arsenal side who will be looking to take advantage of the two top-of-the-table clashes taking place this weekend. Manchester City host Liverpool whilst Aston Villa travel to Tottenham.

Brentford have already played Arsenal this season at the Gtech having lost in the third round of the Carabao Cup to a Reiss Nelson goal despite fielding a relatively strong team against a Gunners side which gave a debut to Charles Sagoe Jr.

The likes of Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko are all expected to start this time around however. As is Aaron Ramsdale who comes in for the ineligible David Raya who despite being on loan from the home side will make his move permanent in the summer.

Kai Havertz scored his first goal for Arsenal with a penalty as they comfortably beat winless Bournemouth in the Premier League at Vitality Stadium.

Havertz, who has struggled since arriving from Chelsea in the summer, converted the second of two Gunners penalties to ensure their third consecutive away victory.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring, heading in the rebound from Gabriel Jesus’ effort and Martin Odegaard scored a penalty to give Mikel Arteta’s side a comfortable lead at the break.

The Gunners’ dominance continued into the second half, and after Havertz scored, Ben White headed home from Odegaard’s free-kick in added time to add gloss to a comprehensive victory for Arsenal.
