Eden Hazard announces retirement from football

Ex-Chelsea winger Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from football after leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season.

Hazard, 32, joined Real from Chelsea in 2019 for £89m, but played just 54 league games for the Spanish giants.

He won two Premier League titles during his time at Stamford Bridge.

“You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time,” said Hazard, who has been a free agent since his contract was terminated in June.

“After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer.”

The Belgian had already retired from international football last December after being part of the squad which was knocked out of the 2022 World Cup during the group stage.

At Real Madrid, Hazard won the Champions League, a Club World Cup, a European Super Cup, two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups. But his time in Spain is widely considered disappointing – he scored just 7 goals in 76 appearances in all competitions.

Hazard started his career with French club Lille, scoring 50 goals in 149 appearances and helping the club to win a domestic double of Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France in 2010-11.

He moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2012, signing for a reported £32m and went on to become a club great, winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2014-15.

Hazard scored 110 goals across 352 appearances for the Blues, including the winner in the 2019 Europa League final against Arsenal in his final appearance for the club.

He is also one of only four players in Premier League history – alongside Thierry Henry, Matt Le Tissier and Eric Cantona – to score 15 or more goals and provide 15 or more assists in a single season, having netted 16 times and laid on 15 assists during the 2018-19 campaign.

“During my career I was lucky to meet great managers, coaches and teammates – thank you to everyone for these great times, I will miss you all,” Hazard added on social media.

“I also want to thank the clubs I have played for: LOSC, Chelsea and Real Madrid; and thank the RBFA for my Belgian selection.

“A special thank you to my family, my friends, my advisors and the people who have been close to me in good times and bad.

“Finally, a huge thank you to you, my fans, who have followed me for all these years and for your encouragement everywhere I have played.

“Now is the time to enjoy my loved ones and have new experiences. See you off the field soon my friends.”

After making his international debut against Luxembourg in 2008, Hazard earned 126 Belgium caps and scored 33 goals. He featured at three World Cups and two European Championships, as well as captaining the team 56 times.

He found the net three times at the 2018 World Cup when Belgium finished third, including a strike against England in the third-place play-off.

  • Moses pours encomium on Hazard

Chelsea winger, Victor Moses has joined in raining encomium on his club-mate, Eden Hazard, following the Belgium star’s century of goals for The Blues, footballlive.ng reports.

Moses is all glee for Hazard, after the dashing winger-cum-midfielder hit his 100th and 101st goals from 322 Cheslea appearances in a 2-1 win at Watford on Boxing Day.

Hazard is the 10th Chelsea player to register 100 goals and joins Blues legends Roy Bentley, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Tambling, Peter Osgood, Kerry Dixon, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard in the elite class.

In celebrating his colleague’s feat, Moses, who joined Chelsea on August 24, 2012, 54 days after the London-based side acquired Hazard from Lille Metropole of France, joined some of his colleagues in recalling the star’s best goal of their choice for the squad.

In his verdict, Moses picked Hazard’s winner away to Liverpool in the third round of the League Cup on September 26, 2018 as his favourite.

Moses beamed with nostalgia: “It was unbelievable – I thought it was going to go to extra-time and then he took on three players and they thought he was going to cross the ball, and then he just let it go!”

  • Hazard left out of Chelsea squad for Europa League opener

Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard has not been included in the squad for their Europa League group stage opener at Greek side PAOK on Thursday, the Premier League club said.

The Belgian is among four players left in London by manager Maurizio Sarri along with centre back David Luiz, midfielder Mateo Kovacic and left-back Emerson Palmieri.

Hazard has made a flying start to the season with five goals in as many Premier League appearances.

This is including a hat-trick in his most recent outing against Cardiff City at the weekend.

Sarri’s decision to leave Hazard out of the Europa League Group L match will keep the attacking midfielder fresh for Sunday’s league trip across London to West Ham United.

  • ‘Telecoms masts constitute no health hazard’

‘Telecoms masts constitute no health hazard’

The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) has said World Health Organisation (WHO) has given a clean bill of health to telecoms masts and towers that they do not constitute health hazards.

The Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, spoke at the weekend at the ‘NCC day’ at the trade fair in Port Harcourt.

Represented by the Head, Department of Projects, Bashir Idris, Danbatta warned against resisting expansion and improved service delivery by communities and individuals, who refused right of way access to telecoms companies for fear of the myth.

He said: “There are individuals who believe that telecoms masts and towers constitute health hazards to human beings. The commission maintains that WHO has affirmed that no result of any such hazard has been established against base stations.

“Therefore, any individual or community adducing such reasons to deny right of way to telecoms companies and prevent them from expanding services are contributing to the poor quality of service in the network.”

The vice chairman hinted that NCC would soon issue a directive to service providers to give 14- day window to subscribers to enable them roll over unused data.

He said the move will stop the present practice where subscribers lose their unused data if they fail to renew on the date of expiration of the subscription.

Danbatta said the issue of data expiration at the end of 30 days had been an issue of concern among consumers, noting that the commission had put service providers on special notice about the present monitoring of user experience and would call them to account in due course.

He said the commission had embarked on sensitisation programmes to inform consumers about their rights and responsibilities.

  • Hazards of phone use worries Fed Govt

The Federal Government has expressed worries over the likely health hazards of the use of mobile phones. It has asked experts to examine the issue and fashion inputs that will assist regulators in West Africa to tackle the issue.

Minister of Communications Technology Mrs Omobola Johnson, who spoke in Lagos at the second West African Conference on Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Exposure and Health, said it was also vital the people’s health is taken care of in the booming telecoms business.

She said:  “Even as we celebrate the gains of this revolution, it is important that we are mindful also of the health of our people, both in the short and in the long term. Mindful of the concerns, which have been expressed both locally and internationally, on whether exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) poses any health hazards to humans; and determined to ensure that the people of West Africa are well advised as to the facts regarding the issue, the Federal Government of Nigeria decided to take the initiative to bring about this conference, which is a follow up to the first one held in 2012, also here in Lagos, Nigeria.

“As you may be aware, Mobile or cellular phones are now an integral part of our lives. In many countries, over half the population use mobile phones and the market is growing rapidly. Already, here in Nigeria as at September 2014 there are over 135 million active subscribers of both mobile and Fixed Wired/Wireless lines; and this number will increase. The growth has been equally phenomenal in the other countries in West Africa and in many instances mobile phones are the most reliable or the only phones available.

“Given the large number of mobile phone users, it is important therefore to investigate, understand and monitor any potential public health impact. Mobile phones communicate by transmitting radio waves through a network of fixed antennas called base stations. Signals in the mobile telephony bands of the radio spectrum are non-ionizing radiation such as X-rays or gamma rays, can neither break chemical bonds nor cause ionization in the human body.”

According the minister, the big question is whether there are any health effects from the use of mobile phones. She said a large number of studies have been performed over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phones pose a potential health risk, adding that to date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use.

“But the agitations and concerns continue to surface time and time again. It is, therefore, for us to get the true situation on this topic, as it is currently, and from some of the most informed experts. The Federal Government is very concerned about the welfare and the health of her people; I believe this is the same of our sister countries in West Africa,” she said, adding that the forum would help the governments to get a position that they can use to either reassure the people that they have nothing to worry about. She however said if the conference finds at the end of the day that there is something to worry about, then, it becomes the duty of the various governments to do that which must be done – “to ensure safety of our people and the environment while using mobile communications.”
