  • NBBF sacks D’Tigress coach, Vincent

    The Nigeria Basketball Federation ( NBBF ) has ended its relationship with the Head Coach of the Senior Women’s Basketball team, Sam Vincent.

    NBBF Media Officer, Afolabi Oni, in a statement on Friday said the decision was taken after extensive consultations and assessment of the team’s progress in camp ahead of the 2018 FIBA Women World Cup in Tenerife, Spain.

    A a letter signed by the NBBF President, Engr Musa Kida, said the decision was taken in the best interest of all parties involved and the long term interest of the D’Tigress.

    NBBF stated that the numerous conflicting commitments of the 55-year-old coach had affected his duties as the coach of the women national team.

    It quoted the letter stating in part that, “The NBBF has been monitoring the situation in Atlanta closely and we are not satisfied with a lot of things.

    ”You left the National Women’s Team Camp in Atlanta since Friday July 27, 2018, without permission from anybody and you have continuously remained absent.

    ”Following investigations, the 2017 Afrobasket winning coach was found guilty of abandoning the team due to other conflicting professional engagements within the United States of America where the team is currently camped.

    ”In view of the importance of giving the team the best of preparation for the World Cup as to make a mark in Spain, the NBBF decided it needed a coach who will spend more time in camp preparing the team.

    “Be informed that you are hereby relieved of your appointment as our National Women’s Coach, to allow you concentrate better on your other activities.”

    The NBBF thanked Vincent for qualifying the team for the World Cup by winning the 2017 Afrobasket Championship in Atlanta and wished him all the best in his future endeavors.

    The board has promised to compensate him for the services rendered while with the team.

    In the meantime, D’Tigress assistant coach, Peter Ahmedu will take charge of team’s preparation for the World Cup to be assisted by Sola Shomala until a new coach is appointed.

    HEAD Coach, Bayelsa State wrestling team, Victor Kodei has assured that the best wrestlers will be selected to represent the state at the forthcoming Governor Wike National Wrestling Challenge Cup which holds at the Rivers State Indoor Sports Complex, Port Harcourt the Rivers capital city from November 23 to 30, 2017.
    The competition sponsored by the Governor of Rivers State, Neysom Wike is a prelude to the 2018 Cadet, Junior and Senior African Wrestling Championships that will hold in Port Harcourt, next year.
    In a chat with NationSport, Kodei who is also the head coach of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation said Team Bayelsa’s target is to dominate the championship in every weight categories.
    “Our preparation is in top gear for the championship and we will present a very strong team. We have been dominating major national championships in the country for a very long time and the Wike Wrestling Champions Cup won’t be an exception. We will be competing in Cadet, Junior and senior and woman wrestling.
    “Like we have always done in the past, newly discovered talents will be given the opportunities to represent the state, while old wrestlers including national, African and commonwealth will also be on parade and are expected to do the state proud,” the former National, African and Commonwealth Wrestling champion told NationSport.
    A total of 90 weight classes with wrestlers competing for honours in all three styles (Greco-Roman, Female Wrestling and Men’s Freestyle) in the Cadet, Junior and Senior with 10 new weight categories each for all the styles.

    Rangers confirm Amakapabo head coach

    Enugu Rangers have confirmed Imama Amakapabo as head coach after he chalked up his sixth win in the Nigeria league at the weekend.

    Former Sharks and Enyimba assistant coach Amakapabo has been in temporary charge of ‘The Flying Antelopes’ after Kelechi Emeteole was ordered to “step aside” earlier this season.

    “His letter confirming him as technical adviser is ready. He is officially our technical adviser now and he has been informed,” said Rangers general manager Paul Chibuzor.

    The general manager also told AfricanFootball.com Rangers are now up to date as regards payment of match bonuses, while he believes the government will soon sort out the issues concerning the players’ salaries.

    Today, Rangers are away to struggling Bayelsa United in continuation of the Nigeria league.

    They are now eighth on the league table with 26 points from 17 matches.

    Lobi Stars appoint Jupiter as head coach

    Ernest Jupiter has been named as Lobi Stars’ head coach as the team resumes training today in preparation for the new season, SportingLife can confirm.

    It was gathered that Jupiter will be in charge of the club before a substantive Technical Adviser is appointed for the club.

    Information available to SportingLife revealed that the team is not ready to renew the contract of the former Technical Adviser, Evans Ogenyi. Ogenyi’s two-year contract with Lobi Stars ended at the end of last season and the club is not interested in his services again.

    The club’s Team Manager, Barnabas Imenger, told SportingLife that 25 players have been ordered to report to camp today.

    The new players are expected to join the club at the weekend. 10 players have been invited for trials out of which five will be picked.

    Imenger said the players have been informed about the development and any player that disobeys will be sanction.

    “We are resuming training today and 25 players will be in camp. We want to start early so as to have players fit before the kick off. Coach Jupiter will take charge of the training. All the players have been informed,” Imenger told SportingLife.
