    Head girl bags five awards

    All eyes were on Sarah Benson as she made repeated journeys to the podium to receive various awards during the Valedictory/Prize Giving Day of Livingstone College Ikorodu  last Friday at Ikorodu Town hall.

    Sarah, who was the Head Girl of the school’s Ogba annex, clinched the overall best graduating student, best in Physics, Special Ambassador, Leadership and Best Science Student awards.

    Addressing the graduating SS3 pupils, the guest speaker and a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Mrs Nimisore Akano, urged them to take their education seriously and use it to impact positively on the society.

    “Put what you have leant into good use and impact positively on your friends, family and the society at large. Getting education is just a part of it, the use you put your education is the most important. Make sure to better the situation from the way you met it with the education that you have acquired, and always strive to achieve excellence,” she said.

    Founder of the school, Dr Kola Olusola Chriswealth, in his message titled: Buried treasures, urged the graduands to discover their talents and use it to develop the society.

    The Acting school Administrator, Mr Abayomi Oluwagbemiga Adeniji, urged the pupils to make judicious use of their time and be disciplined.

    “My message to all the graduating student is that time is a concept you cannot ignore. Your time is limited; do not waste it living someone else’s life. You have exactly the same number of hour per day that was given Steve Jobs, Barack Obama, Goodluck Jonathan etc; therefore you can do great things than them,” he said.

    One of the graduands, Miss Simbiat Awolaja, praised the workers for their caring attitude.

    “The members of staff of this school have been so wonderful. Sometimes, if I did not have money for school fees and I pleaded with them to give me time, they used to allow me to for few days,” she said.

     

  • New head for French Village

    The Federal Government has appointed Prof. Raufu Adebisi as the Director/Chief Executive Officer for the Nigeria French Language Village, the inter-university centre for French Studies in Ajara, Badagry, Lagos State.

    Adebisi, who assumed office on June 18, was until his appointment, a Professor of French at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State.

    He had his early education in Ghana before returning to Nigeria for his secondary and tertiary education. He studied French at ABU and was employed by the university as an Assistant Lecturer on graduation.

    His masters and PhD were also earned at the university, where he became a professor in 2004.

    He was sponsored to undergo a basic certificate course in Chinese language in 2008 by the Chinese Government.

    He held various positions in the university, including the Head of Department and Acting Dean, Coordinator.

    Adebisi will serve for a term of five years.

    ICT compliance must for school heads

    From the 2014/2015 academic session no teacher without Information and Communications Technology (ICT) certification will be appointed school principal or head teacher in Cross River State.

    The new policy for appointment of school administrators, the Commissioner for Education, Prof Offiong E Offiong said is to ensure that by 2015 all teachers in public schools in the state acquire Microsoft Digital Literacy Certification.

    Speaking during the formal commencement of computer training for teachers under the state government laptop computer acquisition/e-learning programme in Calabar, Offiong said there was a need for teachers to be digitally compliant in tune with the demands of the 21st century.

    Offiong said about 10, 000 laptops have been distributed to teachers and other government officials who applied for them.

    He said the response so far has been encouraging because of the software built into the system that makes the work of the teacher in terms of note of lessons among others to be easy.

    This he said had encouraged teachers who initially did not key into the programme.

    He urged the teachers to cooperate with the organizers and facilitators of the training so they can make use of the opportunity to improve themselves as individuals and pass on the knowledge to the children for the overall development of the school system.

     

  • Vigilance group head killed

    The police at the weekend shot dead the chairman of a vigilance group in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Nelson Denedo.

    Denedo was allegedly involved in the abduction of a worker of the State University, Abraka, Martins Denedo.

    Denedo was shot when the police stormed his gang’s hide-out at Eboh-Orogun in Ughelli North Local Government, where the victim was held.

    Martins, who was rescued unhurt, is an accountant at DELSU and the branch treasurer of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU).

    The victim was abducted at Abraka at 1am on January 1 while returning from church after the New Year Eve service.

    The vigilance chairman, it was gathered, engaged the police in a shootout before he was killed by the police.

    Three other suspects were arrested.

    Commissioner of Police Ikechukwu Aduba said as soon as Martins was seized, a team of crack detectives was detailed to carry out the rescue mission.

    He said the deceased was identified as the leader of the gang.

    The police chief said the gang had been responsible for all kidnap and robbery in Abraka and its environs.

    Aduba announced the dissolution of the local security outfit area and directed the chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in the area, the council chairman and traditional rulers to assist in selecting credible persons for inauguration as soon as possible.

    Acct Dept gets head

    The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has appointed a new head for the Department for Accounting in the Faculty of Management Sciences. He is Dr Bassey Bassey. He took over from Dr Akabom Asuquo, whose tenure expired last month.

    Before his appointment, Bassey was the examination officer of the department and at the faculty.

    Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE, he said his administration would focus on developing students through seminars and conferences, adding that exposing students to such programmes would make them compete with their counterparts across the world.

    “I will equally reduce the time being spent on processing and compiling of students’ results and other administrative processes,” he said, adding that he would use his office to provide an enabling environment in addition to sourcing books and equipping the resource room to increase the access to Internet materials.

    He admonished students of the department to be good ambassadors by sustaining its high academic and moral standards. He advised them to be serious with their academic work.

    The President of Nigeria Universities of Accounting Students’ Association, UNICAL chapter, Isaiah Ugwueke, described the appointment of Bassey as putting a round peg in a round hole. He said the don would bring his academic experience to lift the department.
