Why we are prunning down Heartland – Task Force

Chairman of Imo State Task Force Committee on Sports Facility and Deputy Speaker of Imo House of Assembly, Hon. Ugonna Ozuruigbo, has defended the Committee’s plans to reduce the number of the players of the team.

According to Ozuruigbo, the move is geared towards improving the welfare of the players.

“We have 47 players in the club’s pay roll. Of these 47, only 30 are registered with LMC. Many of those players have not played a game for the past two years. Where is that done? We want to improve on the players’ remuneration and we cannot do so with such a crowd,” he said.

“There is no need keeping 47 players and tomorrow we cannot be able to pay them. Rochas Okorocha’s government is a very prudent and responsible government and we cannot harbor players who are not productive. We are going to have a squad of just 30 players. And we will pay them very well. We will also have a functional feeder team from where we can draft in players when we need to fortify. This is the era of change and a lot has to change.

“The management and technical staff alone is up to 35. We cannot sustain such a large staff. That is actually why this committee was set up. Some of those players are there just to compensate them. Things are not done that way.”

The Committee will go beyond the current playing staff of the club.

He said: “We are investigating the sell of many Heartland key players. A particular club in the South East purchased three of our key players. That reduced the quality of the team. We are going to find out why the club will sell very good players and replace them with lower quality players. That affected the club’s performance.”

He reacted to a newspaper report that the players were not comfortable with the committee’s style of administration.

“Why will the players be unhappy with the committee’s style? They had been owed bonuses for up to two years but within this one month, we paid their two winning bonuses on the pitch immediately after the matches. It is appalling to note that a club that gets N28m every month has not paid the players’ bonuses for two years. Within this one month, we have paid two match bonuses and staff salary with N18m. A lot of questions need to be answered.

“Meanwhile, we are going to have an interim management committee in the next couple of days. The management will run the club while the technical crew will recruit the players they need without interference from the committee,” he concluded.

El Kanemi promise Heartland tough time in Owerri

The Chairman of El Kanemi Warriors FC, Alhaji Mohammed Zannah has said that they are coming to Owerri with the hope of ending the Glo Premier League season on a high ahead of their Week 38 fixture with Heartland FC on Sunday at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

The Borno Army have secured their place among the elite division clubs for next season after they beat Wikki Tourists 1-0 in their last home game of the season to move to 49 points from 37 matches.

But Zannah who is popularly called Kakaje told SportingLife that El Kanemi would approach their final game of the current season against the Naze Millionaires with all the arsenal in their armoury and that they are targeting a positive result.

He said that El Kanemi have identified some of the mistakes they encountered during the course of the season and that they will ensure that they get it right next season.

Zannah added that some issues prevented the club from aspiring to their set heights during the season and that they had the lofty dream of qualifying to play on the continent at the end of the season just like it was three seasons ago when they returned to the premier league to place fourth at the end of that season.

    Heartland hail Golden Eaglets

Heartland FC have hailed the remarkable performance of the Golden Eaglets at the just concluded Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup where they emerged as champions after the 2-0 win over Mali in the final last Sunday.

The Team Manager of the Naze Millionaires, Promise Nwachukwu told SportingLife that the Eaglets and the technical crew led by head coach Emmanuel Amuneke deserved to be praised for ensuring that Nigeria’s name is portrayed in good light and the fact that the country’s cadet team were able to defend the crown won two years ago in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Nwachukwu noted that the hard work of Amuneke was evident from the assemblage of the players in Abuja to when they placed fourth during the African U-17 Championship in Niger Republic and when they went ahead to the World Cup after correcting the lapses noticed to claim the highest honour at the cadet level for the fifth time.

He said that he was in love with the disposition of Amuneke who remained quiet during those turbulent periods before the World Cup when he was accused wrongly and that he was thrilled that the former African Footballer of the Year has been vindicated.

Nwachukwu also praised  President Muhammadu Buhari whose tenure as the head of Nigeria has delivered two of the five trophies won by the Eaglets.

He said the administration of President Buhari and the enabling environment he has given to sports development in the country have made it possible for the Eaglets to flourish in Chile and for the country’s representatives to excel in other sports.

“I want to praise the good work of Emmanuel Amuneke for the good job he has done on the team. He made us proud in Chile and I also want to accord special praise to our President, Muhammadu Buhari for the way he has made sports, especially football to thrive,” Nwachukwu told SportingLife.

  • I didn’t sell Uche Kalu, Olanrewaju-Heartland GM

    I didn’t sell Uche Kalu, Olanrewaju-Heartland GM

General manager of Heartland FC of Owerri,Prince Okechukwu Ibeh has denied allegations of financial malpractices and other sundry matters levelled against him by the Deputy Speaker, Imo State House Of Assembly and Chairman of Task Force Committee on Sports Facilities,Ugonna Ozuruigbo.

Ibe had been accused among other issues of selling some former players of the Owerri based side without remitting the transfer fees to the coffers of the club but the football administrator has revealed that he was in not even the GM when some of the players in question were sold.

“Please go and check the records, I was not Heartland GM when Uche Kalu and Kayode Olarenwaju were sold. I do not know anything about their transactions neither have I seen any record of their deal. So what document would I use to claim their transfer money?

“Out of the N10m we are supposed to get from the sale of Orji Kalu, Bobby Clement and Osas Okoro, Rangers International of Enugu have only paid N6m.This amount was paid into the Heartland Account and the records are included in the financial report we submitted to the Governor and the Task Force Committee”

On the allegation that he allegedly diverted the club’s share of the funds from the Premier League sponsors, Globacom, Ibe said that since this year the club has not received any money from the sponsors of the League.

“The truth of the matter is that all the premiership clubs are still expecting the money. Also, none of the 20 premiership clubs have collected the N200,000 worth of phone recharge cards for every home match as claimed by the deputy speaker.

“The argument is, if we are not able to get the sponsorship money why should we go for recharge cards. I am one of the directors representing club owners on the board of the League Management Company (LMC) and I know that the Glo money has not yet come. Please let the committee carry out its investigation well.

“However, due to the challenges all the clubs were facing especially towards the beginning of the league season when most governments were concentrating attention on electioneering campaigns, the LMC decided to share in bits, part of the TV rights sponsorship money from Supersports. Heartland received at different times N10m, N5m, N1m and N4m all of which were paid into Heartland’s bank account.

“This enabled the club to conduct trials, pre-season camping which was in two phases spanning over two months, sign some new players and pay other bills including running of some matches which are contained in the financial records already submitted to the government.

“Let me state clearly that the Heartland bank account we are using was not opened by my administration rather, I inherited it when I took over. Before any withdrawal is made, we send in a requisition stating what we need the money for and asking for approval by the Ministry of Youth and Sports which happened to be our supervising ministry.

“From the record I met, those before me were spending as much as N4m for a two week camping exercise. Due to election issues, we had to go on camping to Oba, Anambra State two times, which amounted to over two months with many players and coaches waiting for the league to commence,”he said.

•Not interested in taking over Naze Millionaires
•Laments financial irregularities under Okechukwu Ibeh

The Deputy Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly,  Ugonna Ozuruigbo has told SportingLife that he has not come to take over HeartlandFC as being widely circulated in the media but that he and his committee have been mandated to clean up the rot in sports in the state.

Ozuruigbo told SportingLife that  Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha told him to look into the affairs of sports in the state and also to take a cursory look at Heartland FC and know why the club has not been productive despite getting  N28 million  as subversion monthly.

He said the findings of Heartland revealed so many  acts of misappropriation of funds by the management of the club and other vices.

  • Obi unhappy with Heartland display

    Obi unhappy with Heartland display

Heartland goalkeeper Ebele Obi has criticized his side’s performance in the 1-0 away defeat to FC Ifeanyi Uba on Wednesday.

The elder brother to Super Eagles central midfielder John Obi Mikel, who has also played for Enugu Rangers in his football career, believes the Naze Millionaires lacked the fight against the Anambra Warriors.

“We must not lower our competitiveness. We lacked our usual aggression and that must not be allowed to happen again,” Obi told News24, although he conceded that the current Heartland side are still a team in the making.

“We’ve come off a good run where we have been playing well and we’d like to have taken three points off Ifeanyi Uba. It was a slip-up and we must use it to improve in the few games remaining in the season.

“However, there are some players who have had virtually no minutes on the pitch. Hopefully we can use them all, which means we will then be playing at our highest level.

“Little by little we are taking the technical crew’s ideas on board but that takes time, both for the coaches and the team,” he explained.

The experienced goalie believes the match against Giwa FC will be a good time to move forward.

“We must use it to work hard, maintain our intensity, clear our minds after the last game and against Giwa this weekend eager and strong.

“Our objective then will be to reach a position in the table where we will be able to fight for something,” he concluded.

    • Praises Pinnick, Oliseh

Heartland Team Manager, Promise Nwachukwu has warned the Naze Millionaires players not to toy with their chances of getting away points in their Glo Premier League Week 35 tie with FC IfeanyiUbah in Nnewi today.

The Owerri side are seventh on the league table with 50 points from 34 matches but Nwachukwu in a chat with SportingLife  revealed that for the team to end the season better than they did last season, they must take all their remaining matches seriously, especially the tie in Nnewi today.

Nwachukwu reckoned that all points against the Anambra Warriors would provide them with a sensational double and also the bragging rights over them ahead of next season.

“We need to take the game with FC IfeanyiUbah very seriously because we would like to end the season impressively and a victory in Nnewi would afford us that opportunity and also the chance to brag that we have claimed a double over them,” Nwachukwu told SportingLife.

He, also in a related development, heaped plaudits on the leadership qualities of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) under Amaju Melvin Pinnick and the head coach of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh.

Pinnick was elected as the President of the NFF in September last year and this has brought about a lot of changes in the Glasshouse including the sending of selected coaches and match officials for courses in England and other elitist ideas aimed at changing the face of football in Nigeria.

Nwachukwu in a brief chat with SportingLife noted that Pinnick should be praised and not castigated for all his good works aimed at putting Nigeria on the world map again.

The former Serbia based player also hailed the impact of Oliseh on the Eagles stating that it has made Nigeria a strong and more disciplined team based on the issues that brewed up in the Eagles camp during the double header friendlies against Cameroon and Congo DR in Belgium.

He asserted that all Nigerians should rally round and support both individuals and those working with them so that the country can be great again.

Heartland want to dedicate Lobi win to Oriental Airline plane crash victims

•Naze Millionaires remember dead duo 21 years later

Heartland will be eager to beat Lobi Stars as a tribute for the repose of the souls of Aimola Omale and Uche Ikeogu who both died when the club’s (then known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale) chartered flight crashed in Algeria in 1994 when they were returning from Tunisia after a CAF Champions Cup first leg tie against Esperance Sportive.

The ill-fated crash happened on September 18, 1994 and 21 years after the incident which happened in an Algerian town of Tamanrasset Heartland players and officials yesterday assembled to pray and have a procession in honour of the two players that died in the crash.

The Media Officer of Heartland, Cajetan Nkwopara told SportingLife the Naze Millionaires players and officials used part of their final training session ahead of Sunday’s duel with Lobi Stars to hold a procession and also pray for the repose of the lives of the dead duo of Omale and Ikeogu.

He said Heartland players have been told to approach the tie with the Pride of Benue with maximum concentration as they would like to dedicate the expected home win to the repose of the lives of their former heroes.

Nkwopara told SportingLife that the death of the two players in the Oriental Airline plane crash still remains one of the sad moments of the club and that even though it is over 20 years the incidence still remains ever fresh in their memories.

  • Udube likes double over Heartland

    Udube likes double over Heartland

Abia Warriors chief coach, Willy Udube is quite a happy man following his side’s double against oriental neighbours, Heartland.

Warriors piped 10-man Heartland 1-0 in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match day 25 clash on Sunday at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

The Umuahia warlords obtained the same goal margin result at Heartland in the first fixture clash in Owerri.

Striker, Chisom Chikatara scored from the penalty spot to hand his side the whole three points at stake.

Udube said though Heartland proved their worth in the game but his charges proved themselves the better side in the clash.

“It was a beautiful game for both sides but more beautiful for us to have picked a win in Owerri and another win on Sunday in Umuahia thereby taking the whole six points off Heartland in the ongoing season.

“Heartland have their youngster goalkeeper, Emmanuel Iwu to thank for the low goal margin.

“Iwu was at his very best as he pulled lot of beautiful saves for his side throughout the hotly contested clash.

“The encounter proved its pre-match rating as a local derby but I think we were clearly the better side.

“We hope to continue the fine run at 3SC in Ibadan to further put more pressure at the summit,” said the former FC Ifeanyiubah coach to supersport.com.

Abia Warriors have taken their total earnings to 40, six points behind league leaders, Sunshine Stars.

  • Heartland beg LMC for leniency

    Heartland beg LMC for leniency

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Heartland have pleaded with the League Management Company (LMC) to relax the three-match ban on Fortune Omoniwari.

The former Sharks marksman was handed a straight red in the 0-2 loss to Nasarawa United in the match-day 23 clash in Lafia.

The LMC was to come down heavily on the player with a stiff three-match ban due to the severity of his unsporting behaviour.

An official of the Owerri outfit, Cajetan Nkwopara, said though the side summarily condemn acts of lawlessness, the three-match ban on Omoniwari is too harsh.

“We are appealing to the LMC to tamper justice with mercy on Omoniwari with a kind review of the three-match ban. Omoniwari has already missed the match against Kwara United and there are two more matches to go.

“We do not condone unruly acts just like we do not accommodate his unsporting behaviour in the match. Omoniwari is a first time offender, a new boy on our roll call who needs a helping hand from all and sundry to settle down in his new post.

“We are human and I think he merely reacted though wrongly to what was an unjust and hard tackle on him. That the match went on despite the vicious tackle, his summary dismissal and resultant goal against his side amounted to enough punishment.

“The three-match ban is too harsh and overkill that’s why we are appealing to the league body for leniency. We have written to the LMC to help the player return to the pitch by waving off the remainder of the ban,” said Nkwopara to supersport.com.

If the ban stands, the former Sharks’ hitman will miss the side’s two matches at neighbours Abia Warriors and Warri Wolves.

Heartland are seventh on the top flight log on 36 points from a possible 72 in the 24-week old league.
