    Heirs Insurance opens Hackathon

    • To reward nine tertiary students

    Heirs Insurance Group (HIG) has called for applications for the maiden edition of the Heirs Insurance Hackathon, a technology-driven innovation programme designed to empower young students shape the future of insurance through Artificial Intelligence and digital solutions.

    The Hackathon is open only to students in universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary institutions to build solutions for real-world challenges across the insurance value chain, from customer experience and claims processing to underwriting, distribution, data, and operational efficiency.

    Registration closes on February 16, 2026, with winning teams to be announced at the Hackathon Grand Finale in April.

    According to the company, a total prize pool of N9 million will be awarded to the top three teams. The initiative reflects Heirs Insurance Group’s commitment to youth empowerment, digital skills development, and inclusive innovation, providing a platform for young Nigerians to apply emerging technologies to critical financial services challenges while gaining exposure to industry, mentorship, and real business problems.

    The Hackathon is being delivered in partnership with Redtech, the digital payment solutions arm of Heirs Holdings, which will bring its technical expertise to support the programme and review submitted solutions, ensuring that ideas are evaluated not only for creativity but also for technical feasibility, scalability, and real-world impact.

    Heirs Insurance Travel Festival: Nigerians call for borderless Africa

    In a historic gathering of travel enthusiasts, diplomats, creatives, and business leaders, the inaugural Heirs Insurance Travel Festival drew thousands to Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Saturday, highlighting the urgent need for an inclusive and borderless travel ecosystem in Africa.

    Under the theme “Promoting Cultural Diversity and an Inclusive Travel Ecosystem,” the festival combined cultural celebration with advocacy, urging reforms in visa policies, bilateral agreements, and travel systems to ease the financial and bureaucratic burden on African travellers.

    A high-profile panel, “Passport Power and Diplomacy,” featured Brazilian diplomat Ambassador Manuel Innocencio de Lacerda Santos Junior, Angola’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Jose Bamóquina Zau, and Stephanie Busari, CEO of SBB Media and former CNN Senior Editor. The panellists stressed easier visa processes, stronger border controls, and harmonised travel frameworks to enable seamless movement across the continent.

    The festival also featured a session led by popular travel creators, including Zim Erobu, Adenike Tejuoso, and Steven Ndukwu, who called for fewer travel restrictions within Africa and refunds for rejected visas, highlighting how current policies increase costs for African travellers.

    The Chief Marketing Officer of Heirs Insurance Group, Ifesinachi Okpagu said the festival provides a platform to address critical challenges in Africa’s travel ecosystem.

    Heirs  Insurance Group has opened applications for its Essay Championship, targeted at Junior Secondary School pupils. This year’s edition features N10.5 million prizes.

    The winning pupil will receive a N5 million scholarship with a N1 million education grant for their school. The first and second runners-up will receive N2 million and N1 million scholarships.

    In addition, insurance-focused themes and quizzes have been embedded in the application for pupils, ensuring early engagement with insurance.

    In a significant expansion of the initiative, the 2025 edition introduces the Teachers’ Insurance Awareness Prize – a new category designed to recognise and reward teachers who actively promote insurance education within schools and communities.

    For the Teachers’ Insurance Awareness Prize (TIAP), the top teacher will receive a N1 million cash prize, with an additional N500,000 grant awarded to their school. To qualify, teachers must implement an insurance awareness project and provide evidence of their initiative and its impact.

    The company organised a seminar themed “Insuring Nigeria’s informal sector for the better,” convening representatives from the Keke Riders Association, Market Women Association, Hotel Owners Association, Taxi Drivers Association, and Okada Riders Association in Abuja.

    Heirs Insurance Group records N31.7b premium

    Heirs Insurance Group (HIG), comprising Heirs Life Assurance (HLA) Heirs General Insurance (HGI) and Heirs Insurance Brokers (HIB), has recorded N31.7billion Gross Written Premium (GWP) in 2023, a financial performance which highlights the Group’s resilience and operational efficiency.

    In a statement from the Group, the Group’s General and Life companies, combined, recorded a 59.30 per cent increase in Gross Written Premium (GWP), rising from N19.9 billion in 2022 to N31.7 billion, for the year ending December 31, 2023, as they enter their fourth year.

    In addition, the Group’s earned insurance revenue for year 2023 stood at N20.5 billion, a surge of 80 per cent from N11.3 billion in 2022, reaffirming the Group as one of the fastest-growing insurance groups in Nigeria.

    Heirs General Insurance (HGI), the non-life arm of Heirs Insurance Group, reported a 77 per cent increase in GWP, rising from N8.5 billion in 2022 to N12 billion last year.

    Total assets for 2023 stood at N18.1billion, a 27.4 per cent increase from N14.2billion recorded in 2022. Profit Before Tax (PBT) surged from N791 million (restated) in FY2022 to N2.4 billion in FY2023, a staggering 203 per cent growth, signaling the company’s effective cost management and strategic growth initiatives.

    Heirs General also reported a net investment income of N1.4billion for 2023, a 45 per cent increase from the preceding year. This impressive top and bottom-line growth underscores the company’s ongoing development and its unwavering focus on delivering value to clients.

     Heirs General also disbursed N1.6 billion to policyholders in claims settlement, up from N471 million in the prior year. This sharp rise in claims settlement emphasises the company’s commitment to customers and its dedication to keeping service promises, with a strong focus on timely and transparent claims processing.

    Heirs Insurance Group (HIG) has announced the appointment of Ibrahim Puri and Sonny Iroche as Independent Non-Executive Directors of its non-life insurance business, Heirs General.

    Puri is an accomplished financial services leader, with over 30 years’ experience in banking, fintech, and FMCG industries.  He was Group Executive Director, United Bank for Africa and Director, RedTech and Nigeria Breweries.

    Heirs Insurance Group has announced the launch of Nigeria’s first-ever digital insurance centre – the Heirs Insurance Experience Centre.

    Based in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, the centre provides one-stop shop for the group’s products and services.

    The centre features an interactive screen, enabling users to view an array of insurance policies to determine the best to purchase and file a claim or chat with the Prince chatbot for faster issue resolution.

    Heirs Insurance Group grosses N20 billion

    Heirs Insurance Group, comprising Heirs General Insurance (HGI) and Heirs Life Assurance (HLA), announced  226 per cent jump in Gross Written Premium (GWP), from N6.1 billion in 2021 to N19.9 billion for the financial year ended December 31, 2022.

    With the strong performance sustained in its second year of operations, Heirs Insurance Group has become the fastest-growing insurance group in Nigeria.

    Heirs Insurance demonstrates Tony Elumelu’s Heirs Holdings’ desire to disrupt the Nigerian insurance market, bringing value, great customer service and relevant products to the mass market, delivering on the mission of providing insurance for all, not just for some.

    Heirs Life, the specialist life insurer recorded a 326 per cent increase in Gross Written Premium (GWP), from N2.7 billion in 2021 to N11.5 billion in 2022. Heirs Life also announced a 494 per cent growth in life funds, from N1.7 billion in 2021 to N10.1 billion in 2022.

    Heirs Life made total claims payouts of N1.5 billion in 2022, a 484 per cent increase from N257 million paid out in 2021, in accordance with its promise of providing relief to its customers, quickly and efficiently, in times of loss.

    In addition, the company’s underwriting profit grew by 109 per cent, from N670 million in 2021 to N1.4 billion in 2022, with a profit before tax (PBT) growth from a loss position of N279m to a positive position of N350 million in 2022, a 226 per cent jump.

    Heirs General Insurance, the Group’s non-life insurer, recorded a 143 per cent increase in Gross Written Premium (GWP), from N3.5 billion in 2021 to N8.5 billion in 2022 and a profit before tax (PBT) increase of 157 per cent, from a loss position of N862.1 millio in 2021, to a profit of N499.4m in 2022.

    Underwriting profit rose from N365.2 million in 2021 to N1.3 billion in 2022. Living up to its promise, Heirs General Insurance paid N1.1 billion in claims in 2022, an increase from N572 million paid in 2021.

    These figures were disclosed in the NAICOM-approved 2022 financial statement, audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
