  • Boy, 17, held for allegedly defiling minor

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for alleged defilement of a seven-year-old girl.

The incident occurred at 4, Obanta Road, Apapa, Lagos.

The Nation learnt that the victim’s mother became aware of the defilement on November 3, after her youngest child, who felt cheated about the ice cream bought for them, disclosed the incident to her (the mother).

A representative of a human rights group, the Arms of Comfort Foundation, Adejumo Kazeem, said the child told their mother that her sister had been sucking Brother …’s ‘toi toi’ (manhood).

Kazeem said: “The woman lodged a complaint. She alleged that on November 3, she became aware that her daughter had been sucking the boy’s manhood.

“The woman said she bought ice cream for her two daughters to share. The elder one gave the younger one little and she was not happy about it.

“Then, she threatened her elder sister that she would disclose the secret they had been keeping to their mummy. Their mother heard and asked the younger one to speak up. That was when the younger one told her that Brother… had been making the seven-year-old girl to suck his toi toi (manhood).

“The woman asked the victim if it was true. She initially refused to open up, but later begged the mother not to tell her father. The woman agreed that she would not tell their father and the girl said she had done it three times.

“The woman quoted her daughter as saying that the boy (suspect) one day attempted to penetrate her, but he was unsuccessful. She said when her husband (the father) heard about it, he was furious. The woman alleged that the boy had also defiled a neighbour’s son, but the incident was not reported.”

Continuing, Kazeem said the woman and her daughter were referred to the Mirable Centre, Lagos for examination, where it was established that the girl had been penetrated through the anus and private parts.

He added: “They were counselled before they were referred to the centre for check-up. The results proved that the girl had been defiled. She was given drugs at the centre.

“We were asked if the matter had been reported to the police and we said no. We assured them that we would do so once we got back. They said the test result can be given to us, but the medical report is confidential and can only be given on request either to the police or the court.

“Immediately we left Mirabel Centre, the Executive Director, Arms of Comfort Foundation, wrote a letter to the Area ‘B’ Police Station, Apapa and copied the Medical Officer and Education Officer at the Apapa Local Government.

“When we explained everything and presented the letter to the police on November 8, they rejected the letter because we did not notify them before referring the victim to hospital for test and treatment.

“Another thing they said that baffled me was that we would have to motivate them financially. The victim’s mother said her husband had told his relatives abroad and they were interested in the case.

“When the police heard this, they told her to call the person. That they would like to speak with the person and she did. It was later that day that I called the woman and she said the boy had been arrested. She said the boy confessed to the crime.”

Police spokesman Chike Oti confirmed the incident.

He said the case was at the gender section of the command.

Oti said: “The suspect was arrested and transferred to the gender section. He is underage and ill. So, he was given an administrative bail and handed over to his parents so that he could be treated. The suspect will be arraigned when he gets better.”

  • Fake EFCC official held over N900,000 fraud

A man, who posed as an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Paschal Ugwu, has been arrested by the police over alleged N900,000 fraud.

Ugwu, according to Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, claimed to be an EFCC official and defrauded local and international businessmen.

Edgal said the suspect was arrested after he collected N805,000 from the Managing Director (MD) of Wire-My-Cake Company, Ijegun, Isheri-Oshun.

The Nation learnt that the firm has a case with EFCC, and the suspect took advantage of the situation.

Edgal said: “The suspect met his waterloo on October 5 at Ijegun, having defrauded Wire-My-Cake Company. Two months before his arrest, while pretending to be an EFCC official, he accused the company’s CEO of defrauding GTB.

“He further accused him that it was the proceeds of the fraud that he used in setting up his company.

“The suspect did not only intimidate the company’s CEO, but also followed it with accusations and at the end of the day obtained N805,000 from him.

“The command operatives attached to Area ‘F’ Ikeja began operation. This led to the arrest of Sodiq Ibrahim, a dismissed employee of Wire-My-Cake Company, who connived with the suspect to defraud his former employer.”

Edgal said Ugwu and Ibrahim would soon be arraigned.

  • Man held for ‘sodomising twins’ sons’

A 37-year-old-man, Jephath Ighodaro was yesterday arraigned before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly having sex with his own twins’ sons.

Ighodalo, who is the founder of Purple Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, and lives at Saint Augustine Street, Orisunmbare, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge before Magistrate P.E. Nwaka.

The police alleged that Ighodalo penetrated his sons through the anus.

The incident was said to have happened between January and July.

According to police, Ighodalo was arrested after his wife filed a complaint against him that he allegedly sodomised their boys.

Ighodalo was alleged to have withdrawn the children from their school in March 2016 following his separation from his wife the previous year.

He was alleged to have been abusing the children by penetrating their anuses and forcing them suck his manhood.

The police said his wife became suspicious when the twins went for a weekend at their mother’s place and fondled her breasts.

When she enquired from them, the kids allegedly told her their father had been sodomising them.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Nwaka adjourned the case till September 3.

  • Three policemen held for alleged extortion

Three policemen held for alleged extortion

The X-Squad Unit of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID) has arrested three policemen for alleged extortion of motorists at Surulere, Lagos mainland.

The Nation learnt that the men, from the Surulere Police Division, are in detention pending disciplinary action.

Following their arrest, acting Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal directed that a query be issued to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Surulere, for alleged poor supervision.

The command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said the Commissioner was unhappy that the the incident occured despite directives from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) that senior officers would be held accountable for the actions of their subordinates.

Famous-Cole said the Commissioner also placed restrictions on the category of persons to sign detention order.

He said: “Yes, three policemen were arrested. I do not have their details but they are being interrogated. The CP directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Administration to issue the DPO of the area a query for poor supervision.

“He also directed that henceforth, only Heads of Department (HODs), Area Commanders and DPOs are allowed to sign detention orders.

Famous-Cole said the CP had warned that Area Commanders or DPOs would be held liable if their jurisdiction is found culpable in any “unworthy, shameful act of unnecessary detention of citizens.”

  • A nation held hostage

Our dear nation has gone through very many difficult times. We’ve survived bloody coups, several rounds of ethno-religious violence; we’ve emerged even from a long and bloody Civil War” – Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The warring Fulani and Igbo political rivals already know this. What Nigerians therefore want the acting President to tell the fortune-seeking Igbo political elite and their power-seeking Fulani rivals is that their unhealthy rivalry has held our nation down for far too long. Ironically while the duo pretended to be enemies, they have according to Brigadier General Alabi Isama, jointly ruled our country for the greater part of our independence.  Tragically, our nation has known no peace since 1962, when they unpatriotically undermined our constitution in order rule the nation according to their blurred vision of society.

If we needed any reason to prove that the rivals are behind current tension in the nation, the well-crafted Monday letter to Osinbajo, and the measured response from Ohaneze settled that. The Arewa youth in the said letter had said the north cannot “afford to continue giving the keys to (their) cities to a people whose utterances, plans and arrangements are clearly geared towards war and anarchy”, as “Kanu and IPOB who preach hatred and war virtually every day, have not been cautioned by any Igbo leader”. We didn’t need to assume this was the case of the hand of Esau and the hand of Jacob as Fulani elders did not waste time before endorsing the statement.

The Igbo political elite in its own response say – “That some individuals are pushing for self-determination in the South-east does not mean that the Igbo want to secede. The real situation is a protest against marginalization.” Since the Ibo political elite were not only influential during the administration of Jonathan who has confessed he was ‘caged all through his presidency’, one cannot divorce the madness and campaign of hate in the last two years from those who recently lost influence.

After undermining our constitution, the two rivals first confronted themselves over the disputed 1963 census result. Outwitted by their rivals through the judiciary, the Igbo political elite understood that if democracy is game of numbers, the census returns figures for the north had foreclosed the possibility of an Igbo leader emerging through a constitutional means. Afterwards, what followed on the pages of newspapers was a campaign of hate with the Igbo dismissing the Fulani as ‘the kola-nut eating ignoramuses’ with the Fulani responding in kind about ‘half naked non-believers of the eastern forest’. This was the atmosphere under which the 1964 election was held. Again in the constitutional crisis thrown up by the disputed election result, the Fulani outfoxed their Igbo rivals.

The first recorded Igbo victory against their Fulani political rivals followed the January 1966 Igbo led military coup which decimated the political and military leadership of the north. The victory however was short-lived as the Fulani came back with a vengeance in July 1966, mindlessly killing every Igbo military officer in sight. The civil war that followed (1967-70) ended in favour of Fulani political elite.

By 1979, the Igbo political elite, often driven by quest for material resources and access to power have forgotten the scar of war as they became the ‘beautiful bride’ to Fulani-dominated NPN, an offspring of NPC of the first republic. Even rebel leader Odumegwu Ojukwu who escaped to Ivory Coast as Obasanjo closed on his last hold of Biafra, returned home to embrace the Fulani-controlled NPN. The romance between the two rivals again fell apart over sharing of offices and resources shortly before the 1983 election.

In 1999, Obasanjo, the Fulani candidate was roundly rejected by his Yoruba people. Igbo political elite filled the gap. They featured prominently in his administration. They also exploited the clueless President Azikiwe Jonathan to the maximum building millennium cities and mansions in Abuja without remembering their south eastern states. Jonathan loss of power to a Fulani man has rekindled the old rivalry. They agonised not only because they are out of power but also because they lost the position of spare tyre they had always held to their Yoruba political enemy for the first time in our nation’s history.

But who are the Fulani and the Igbo of Nigeria? The former were fortune seekers who came from Futa Jallon about 1804. Under the guise of purifying the Islamic faith that had existed for over 400 years, they overran the Hausa state.  But to underscore it was all about quest for power and quest for fortune, of the 12 leaders appointed by Othman Dan Fodio, all but one were of Fulani tribe .

But the Fulani are astute politicians and empire builders. They adopted Hausa as the lingua franca while keeping their Fulfulde language, spoken only by the Fulani as language of power. Key influential members of the conquered territories are integrated through marriage, business and politics. Ahmadu Bello who was satisfied as the power behind the throne appointed Balewa, a non-Fulani minority who in his autobiography, had referred to his grandmother who had wished all Fulani sent away from their land or be killed, Prime Minister of Nigeria. The Fulani master stroke was deployed in July 1966, when the aggrieved mainstream Fulani military officers settled for Gowon, a Christian from Plateau state as Head of state.

From the fortunes secured from the conquered territories, the Fulani overlords gave fish to the subjects rather than teach them how to fish. They eat food together from the same bowl while sitting on the bare floor with their subjects.  And because they have been programmed not to see the difference between the masters and the serfs, they are easy to mobilise to support and sustain the system that weighed heavily against them whether during elections, census exercises or even social upheavals.

They became easy tools in the hands of their Fulani leaders which led to the killing of over 40 southerners. The northern mobs did not need more than the body language of their leaders in July 1966 before embarking to on mindless killings of those Igbo they believed openly celebrated the killing of their benefactors.

The Igbo political elite on the other hand lack the political wizardry and the diplomatic astuteness of their Fulani rival.  For instance, despite claiming to have investment of about N43trillion in the north, they have for two years engaged on campaign of hate against the same north. They are not at peace with their neighbours including Rivers where the issue of Igbo abandoned properties had lingered on for about 50 years despite the fact that Ikwere Igbos produced the last three governors of the state. They are similarly not at peace with the Yoruba where they have always found acceptance.

What they however also share in common with their political rival is the exploitation of their often vulnerable Igbo urban immigrants who need protection in a strangers land for political ends. For instance when Akinsanya, an Ijebu man and Zik’s candidate lost to Ernest Ikoli an Ijaw man and Awo’s candidate during Nigerian Youth Movement election, Awo was tarred with the brush of tribalism and the Igbo believed their leader.

Although NCNC was a predominantly Yoruba, but the moment Zik lost a chance to represent Lagos to Dr. Olorunnimbe, another stalwart of NCNC, Yoruba became traitors to the Igbo cause. Zik as premier of East did not enjoy the support of mainstream Igbo who regarded him as Onitsha Igbo; but when the Yoruba in 1952 insisted they preferred Yoruba as premier of the West to an Igbo man, Igbo political elite claimed Yoruba started tribal politics in Nigeria.

What unites the Fulani and their Igbo rivals who have over the years put the interest of their members above that of Nigeria is more than what divide them. Except the predatory political rivals who regard every part of Nigeria as “a no man’s land’, informed Nigerians know the cheapest way to tackle the menace of Fulani herdsmen terrorism, kidnapping and distribution of dangerous drugs is through state, local and community policing.

  • Plumber held for ‘sexual assault’ of daughters

A 42-year-old plumber, Idowu Lasisi, has been arrested for allegedly molesting his daughters.

Lasisi was brought to the Police Command at Ikeja yesterday following his 15-year-old daughter’s claim that he sexually penetrated her three times.

The suspect, it was gathered, started the molestation with his 19-year-old daughter who fled their Ketu, Lagos residence when she could no longer bear it.

It was gathered that his wife, Labanke left him because of the alleged incestuous act.

Lasisi was said to have turned to his 15-year-old daughter after his wife and eldest daughter left the house. He allegedly gave her N500 each time he slept with her.

But the suspect denied the allegation, claiming the victim framed him up because he scolded her.

A source said: “The victim was brought by her mother to the station and we have sent her for check-up. The mother said she left her husband two years ago, when she discovered that he was sleeping with their eldest daughter.

“The woman is a trader and she left her three children behind. When the older daughter couldn’t stand the thing, she ran away from home and no one knows her whereabouts.

“According to the younger girl, her father started coming to her one night last year and he gave her N500.  She said there were times she would fight him off but that he succeeded in having sex with her three times. Out of frustration, she stopped going to school.”

Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said the victim has been taken to the Mirable Centre for medical examination. Investigation, he said, was ongoing.

  • Islamic cleric, two suspected kidnappers held for allegedly killing 11-yr-old girl

Three men including an Islamic cleric who allegedly kidnapped and killed a girl, Aminat Ishola, 11, have been arrested by men of the State Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of Ogun State Police Command.

The 50-year-old Islamic cleric, Taofeek Kola Ajisomo and two other suspects, Babatunde Akinrounmu,21, and  Damilare Shina,40, allegedly kidnapped Aminat around 7.30 pm at Arugudu near Ijoko in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area.

Aminat was allegedly taken to Osun-Jegede in Ibadan, Oyo State, where she was kept in the house of Ajisomo.

It was learnt that Aminat died eight days after Ajisomo administered a substance suspected to be poison on her.

To cover their tracks, the suspects allegedly enclosed Aminat’s lifeless body in a sack and dumped it in front of Ogbere Police Division in Ibadan.

The suspects later made calls to the relations of the late girl asking for a N2 million ransom for her release.

In a statement, the spokesman of Ogun Police Command, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, explained that,”police operatives in Agbado Division of Ogun Command had earlier arrested the mastermind of the crime, one Babatunde Aderonmu, 21, after he was suspected and reported to the police by the guardian and relations of the victim .The suspect was subsequently transferred to the Special Anti Robbery Squad(SARS),Abeokuta, for further investigation. Aderonmu, who linked up with the third suspect, Damilare,40, and the cleric, Ajisomo  asked a prophetess in Osun-Jegede in Ibadan to send her account details with a promise that certain amount of money would be dropped in the account to show their appreciation for her prayers over the years. The prophetess did not know that the suspects were only playing on her intelligence. The suspects eventually sent the account details to the family of their victim to drop the ransom of N300, 000, contrary to their earlier demand of two million naira only.”

He added: “The SARS operatives led by the officer in charge, Mohammed Tijani, a Superintendent of Police (SP) swung into action by adopting all available and legitimate strategies to arrest the remaining two suspects, Damilare and Ajisomo shortly after the arrest of Aderonmu, who is a former worker in a bakery belonging to the victim’s guardian in Ijoko , in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area. Aderounmu was allegedly sacked for engaging in dubious acts.

The suspects have confessed to the crime and are presently assisting the police in its investigation. The corpse of the deceased has been kept in a morgue and autopsy had been carried out on it. The Commissioner of Police Ogun State, Mr  Valentine Ntomchukwu, has therefore directed that the suspects  be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

  • Africa kings held to 1-1 draw

Africa kings held to 1-1 draw

Côte d’Ivoire were held to a 1-1 draw by Equatorial Guinea in Abidjan on Sunday evening, in the final friendly of their FIFA window’s campaign.

The African champions had the best start with two attempts on goal from Gervinho and Giovanni Sio in the first ten minutes, but Iban Salvador Edu put the visitors ahead against the run of play in the 12th minute.

The Elephants pushed straight away for the equaliser, with two back-to-back well taken curling free-kicks from Yaya Touré that just missed the target (23rd and 30th minutes), and a clever one-two between Gervinho and Salomon Kalou ultimately cleared by the Nzalang’s defence just past the half-an-hour mark.

The locals suffered another blow with Gervinho forced to leave the pitch with a thigh injury in the 37th minute, as the AS Roma star was replaced by Wilfried Bony.

Kalou, Serey Die and Bony missed more chances before the break to send the visitors with a one-goal advantage into the second half.

Côte d’Ivoire’s coach Hervé Renard decided to send Max Gradel in for Salomon Kalou for the final 45 minutes. A choice that paid off with the Saint-Etienne’s attacking midfielder grabbing the equaliser 20 minutes from time.

But despite all their efforts and the substitution of Giovanni Sio by Gadji Tallo in the 84th minute, Yaya Touré and his teammates had to settle for the draw with Equatorial Guinea, who put an end to the Elephants’ five-match winning run.
