  • Breaking: Helicopter crashes into Lagos lagoon

    A yet to be identified helicopter crashed into the Oworonsoki lagoon in Lagos about 35 minutes ago.

    The crash site, according to sources, is directly behind the palace of the Oba of Lagos.

    The number of casualty and cause of the mishap had not been ascertained

    Confirming the incidence, the southwest spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “It is true but NEMA has not receive distress alert from the chopper on its mission control centre yet.

    “We have Maritime Distress Alert only about a ship around Warri in Delta State, rescue agencies are on their way to the scene.”

    A transport helicopter has crashed and burst into flame in a polar region of Siberia with the loss of 19 lives, the Russian authorities say.

    The Mi-8 helicopter came down 66km (41 miles) from the village of Deputatsky in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia).

    Three crew members and 25 passengers were on board, the Interstate Aviation Committee in Moscow said, adding that it had opened an inquiry.

    BBC reports that helicopters are frequently used for transport in remote parts of Siberia.

    According to the Interstate Aviation Committee, the helicopter was flying with Polar Airlines, based in the city of Yakutsk.

    Yakowa, Azazi die in helicopter crash

    Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State and former National Security Adviser Andrew Owoye Azazi died in an helicopter crash today (Saturday)  in Nembe , area of Bayelsa  State,

    Governor Yakowa and Mr. Azazi, a retired military general who served as chief security adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, were among passengers in the ill-fated helicopter.

    They were returning from the burial  of the late father of a special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on research and documentation, Mr Oronto Douglas.

    Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) it was learnt indicated that the agency had activated a search for a crashed helicopter.

    Governor Yakowa and Mr. Azazi were among many political figures who reportedly attended the burial of   Douglas’s father.

    The crash comes on the heels of another helicopter crash on October 25, 2012 that has left Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State severely injured.

    Mr. Suntai was moved to a hospital in Germany where he receiving treatment.

    Aviation authorities are yet to speak on the latest crash.
