    HID Awolowo: A year after

It has been a year since the death of Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, the wife of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. To mark the first year anniversary, the Awolowo family organised a lecture and inaugurated the advisory council of the HID Awolowo Foundation. LEKE SALAUDEEN was there.

Nigerians from all walks of life converged on Ikenne, Ogun State, last week for the first year remembrance of the matriarch of the Awolowo dynasty, Chief HID Awolowo who died on September 19, 2015. HID had remained relevant in Nigeria politics because of her loyalty and dedication that sustained the political vision of her spouse – the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.  She was always there for Awo through good times and turbulent periods.

She did so not only by ensuring happy, loving and peaceful home but also by active participation in political campaigns and activities. Indeed, she contested the 1964 Federal elections as the Action Group candidate in Awo’s constituency. The late sage acknowledged her invaluable contributions when he attributed his success in life to three factors –  the grace of God, a Spartan self discipline, and a good wife. He went on to describe her as his “jewel of inestimable value.”

Being the first anniversary, three major events  took place:  A memorial service was held at the family chapel;  a lecture entitled: “The Nigerian woman in the footprints of HID” was delivered by a human rights activist, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, and the inauguration of the HID Awolowo Foundation.

In his sermon, the Archbishop of Lagos Anglican Diocese, Dr Michael Olusina Fape, said the remembrance service would not have been held if Mama had not contributed her to the development of Nigeria, which, according to him, had made her to be a reference point, even in death. Dr Fape  explained why the family decided to celebrate HID in death, saying he was a woman who knew God; a woman who held forth in the family and political circles of her late husband for 30 years after his exit and a woman who handed a good name to her children.

The cleric praised the family for setting up a foundation in honour of their matriarch. He said the initiative would further perpetuate the memories of what she stood for in her lifetime.

“We appreciate God for keeping watch over everybody an the gathering here to remember a virtuous woman , a matriarch of Awolowo dynasty, Chief( Mrs) HID Awolowo, who transited to the great beyond exactly a  year ago,” he said.

To the children, Dr Fape reminded them: “When you mention HID, it resonates. When you mention HID, people know it for good. Whether you like it or not, the onus is on you to make sure that the good names of your parents do not evaporate. It is a big challenge and you may not know, but reality will dawn on you more and more now that Mama is gone.”

The issue that dominated discussion at the lecture session was the virtues of HID Awolowo and how the present generation could emulate her qualities.

The chairperson of the event, Mrs Ayo Obe, set the ball rolling when she said the late sage described HID as “his jewel of inestimable value” because of her sterling qualities as a woman that was ready to stand by her husband in times of joy and adversities. Mrs Obe, a human right activist/lawyer, said Mrs Awolowo was an example of a woman who was ready to sacrifice her comfort not for the sake of her immediate family alone, but for the downtrodden. She said what Mama achieved in her life-time should be celebrated.

In her presentation, Dr Odumakin lamented that there was a dearth of  new generation HID in the society due to survival instinct occasioned by economic factors. She said the ideal family had been lost because of social limitations and shrinking space for women expression.

Dr Odumakin enjoined the present generation of women to learn from Mama Awolowo’s qualities, such as being a pillar of support, an ideal, consistent, industrious and highly respected woman, which made her husband to refer to her as his “jewel of inestimable value”. She noted that the Awolowo family was a typical example of a model family this generation must emulate.

She said: “If we want a prototype of standard family life, a family with great value, we will be so wasteful to be looking far for an example. Here is just for us, the great family- Awolowo! This generation, therefore, needs to learn and copy this model family, Awolowo. There is a dearth today, however, of this model of Awolowo family. We have been inundated instead with stories of domestic violence and resulting dangers for innocent children in the family.

“The dearth of a new generation of HIDs is due largely to economic factors, shrinking space for women expression and social limitations. While a proportion of women is wandering for survival due to economic hardship, others are facing various forms of gender abuses and domestic violence, today. The family idea is under serious assault.”

In her welcome address, Executive Secretary of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation Dr Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu explained the rationale for setting up another foundation in memory of her mother. Her words: “Our reasons for this are simple. First of all, given her remarkable life, she deserves all the recognition that can come her way.

“Following Yeye Oodua HID Awolowo transition exactly one year ago, today, the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation’s governing bodies quickly took a decision to honour her in perpetuity by setting up a foundation in her name, under the aegis of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation.

“Secondly, here we have, clearly, a ‘team made in heaven’. Chief Awolowo was, without doubt, the visionary and leader of the team. But Yeye Oodua HID Awolowo was his incomparable enabler and enhancer. Together they braved phenomenal challenges and, today, the consensus is that they won, ultimately”.

Extolling HID’s virtues, Dr Awolowo-Dosumu said: “Her loyalty and dedication to spouse and family, even and especially in the face of severe trials, her perseverance in the struggle for the supremacy of truth and social justice, her extra-ordinary  industry and entrepreneurship, and her indomitable spirit in the face of formidable odds stood her out  She was strong. She was smart and she was kind.

“These are the attributes that should be acclaimed and celebrated now more than ever, even if evidence all around us appears to suggest that it is no longer enough to possess such noble qualities. We must, nonetheless, keep hope alive. Ths is the fundamental reason this initiative is not only necessary, but also timely. In the words of Bishop Desmond Tutu, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”

On the objectives of the HID Awolowo Foundation, the executive secretary said the Foundation was “poised for advocacy and, if necessary, intervention on issues that inspire women, promote values and build the nation. Our focus will be to underline the careers of role models like Yeye Oodua HID Awolowo in a bid to reset the values of younger Nigerians who already, I fear, appear to be morally adrift.

Other objectives include: to foster the legacy of HID and to disseminate literature and materials relating to her civic virtues and commitment to nation building; to imbue in women the qualities of leadership and doggedness demonstrated by the matriarch and to advocate for the empowerment of women in all spheres of life; to develop the spirit of entrepreneurship and managerial acumen in young Nigerians, especially women, and to inculcate in Nigerian citizens virtues and qualities relating to family stability with which she was famously associated with, having been described  by her husband as his “jewel of inestimable value”.

The high point of the event was the inauguration of the HID Awolowo Foundation Advisory Council  by Prof. Oladipo Akinkungbe, who held brief for Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Chairman, Obafemi Awolowo Foundation.

The 17-member  council has Senator Daisy Danjuma as chairman.

Other members include Prof. Wale Adebanwi, Mrs Yemi Alabi, Chief Tunji Ayanlaja (SAN), Yeye Olunfunke Daniel, Mrs Toyin Fape, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, Prof. Segun Gbadegesin, Mrs Fatima Waziri Ibrahim, Lady Maiden Ibru, Ms Lana Mandilas, Mrs Eriwu Molajo, Dr Insa Nolte, Dr (Mrs ) Femi Ogunsanya, Mrs Fola Olumide, Dr (Mrs) Jayne Soboiki and Mrs Folusho Olaniyan (Secretary).

Senator Danjuma, in her acceptance speech, commended the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation “for finding us fit and proper to serve as members of the HID Awolowo Foundation Advisory Council. I am happy with the calibre of men and women in the council.

“What the life of Mama Awolowo taught us particularly men is that you need a good woman to live long and to be able to cope with your job. Mama stood solidly by the side of her husband in his struggle to make life worth living for common people. That is why Papa Awo described her as his jewel of inestimable value.

“Nigerians need to refocus on home value. We should go back to the drawing board. We have misplaced values; it’s time to get back on the track. We should start to mentor young girls through advocacy, seminars and workshops to ensure our moral values are brought back. It’s time to wake up and imbibe HID’s virtues”.

She promised that the foundation would mentor the younger generation of girls to become responsible women in the society like the late Mrs Awolowo.

Dignitaries on the occasion included the Obi of Onitsha and patron of Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe;  Prof Oladipo Akinkugbe; Chief Ebenezer Babatope;  former deputy governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu;  Prof. A.B.O. Oyediran, Chief Idowu Sofola; Dr Femi Majekodunmi; Senator Femi Okurounmu, Prof Theophilus Ogunlesi , Prince Bola Ajibola, Princess Adenrele Adeniran Ogunsanya, Prof. Ayo Olukotun  and Senator Tony Adefuye.

Ogun names school, estate after HID Awolowo

    •Schools, markets closed tomorrow

The Ogun State government has named the state-owned Model School in Ikenne and Plain Fields Estate, Abeokuta after the late Mrs. Hannah Idowu Dideolu (HID) Awolowo..

The Model School and Plain Fields Estate are being built by the Ibikunle Amosun administration.

Former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande; Minister of Solid Minerals Kayode Fayemi, his wife; Bisi, yesterday joined the  people to celebrate the life of the matriarch of the Awolowo family.

For hours, dignitaries including Governor Amosun, chairman of the defunct Interim National Government (ING) Chief Ernest Shonekan; Chief Ayo Adebanjo and ex -military administrator of Ekiti State Gen Tunji Olurin extolled the virtues of Yeye Odua.

Amosun, Shonekan, Adebanjo and Olurin, who spoke at the Gateway International Stadium,  Sagamu, venue of the celebration, described Mama Awolowo as an “exemplary woman,” a “ great mother, grandmother and a true daughter of Ogun State”.

Amosun enjoined Yoruba women and Nigerians to imbibe Mama’s core values of selfless love and service to humanity.

According to the governor, the State Executive Council (SEC) concluded that one of the best ways in which the state could immortalise Mama Awolowo was to sustain the ideals and philosophy, which she stood for.

He noted that the late Yeye Odua worked for the stability of the Awolowo dynasty, standing by her husband throughout his political travails.

“We should imbibe her ideals, selfless service and love for humanity because it is the greatest legacy we can leave for Mama. We should copy all the good virtues, values and attributes of Mama HID because that is the way to honour her.

“Mama worked for the stability of Papa’s dynasty. She stood solid and resolute not only for the Awolowo family but also for the Yoruba. She was a good woman, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and daughter of Ogun State,” Amosun said.

For Shonekan, HID Awolowo was a rallying point in progressives’ politics, an exemplar in character, who worked diligently for the economic and socio-political development of Yorubaland.

He said Mama’s support for her husband was unique, adding that her “indelible marks on the sands of time and the legacies left behind will continue to speak for her”.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mama’s eldest daughter, Mrs Omotola Oyediran, said the show of love by Nigerians attested to their appreciation of what her parents did for the country.

The government has directed that all markets and public schools in Remo be closed tomorrow.

This was contained in a statement in Abeokuta yesterday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Adeoluwa.

It stated that the closure was a mark of respect for the late matriarch.

The release, however, said the directive would affect only schools Ikenne, Remo North and Sagamu Local Government Areas.

”Government, hereby, appeals to market men and women as well as residents of the state to troop out en-masse to give late Mrs Awolowo a befitting burial,” it said

At the ceremony are wife of the Vice-President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Alaba Lawson, Ambassador Olatokunbo Awolowo – Dosunmu, Chief Doja Adewolu, the General Overseer of Deeper Life Christian Ministry, Pastor Williams Kumuyi, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey, among others.

HID Awolowo, best First Lady Nigeria never had – Atiku

The former Vice – President, Abubakar Atiku, on Wednesday described the late Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu (HID) Awolowo as the “best First Lady Nigeria never had.”

Atiku said the deceased was not only loyal and supportive house-wife, but one that helped her husband, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo to attain success in life.

The ex-vice president spoke in Ikenne while presenting to the public, a book titled – In the Radiance of the Sage: The Life and Times of HID Awolowo, a biography of the late wife of Chief Obafemi Awolowo (SAN).”

The 311 – page book written by Prof. Wale Adebanwi and reviewed by Prof. Adigun Agbaje, chronicled the life and times of HID Awolowo.

The biography also discussed many key moments in the deceased’s life, the key roles she played in the life of her husband and the politics of the then Western Region.

In attendance at the public presentation of the book are ex – governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Pa Olanihu Ajayi, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Hon. Ladi Adebutu and former Speaker of the House of Representatives,  Dimeji Bankole, among others.

Atiku said:”I know it is a cliché to say that behind every successful man there is a woman. It may even sound somewhat sexist in this day and age when women’s achievements are deservedly receiving more recognition. However, it has long been known that ChiefAwolowo owed a large portion of his success to his beloved wife of 50 years.

“Of course Chief Awolowo’s life was not only about successes and triumphs. He had his low and very challenging moments in life and politics – suffering state-imposed restrictions on his physical movement, exile in Lekki Island and imprisonment – all arising from political crises in the Western Region and attempts by his political rivals to seize those opportunities to weaken or destroy Awo politically.”

    •Ajimobi, Ambode, Aregbesola pay tribute

Thousands of residents in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, trooped out yesterday to honour the late matriarch of the Awolowo dynasty, Mrs. Hannah Idowu Dideolu (HID) Awolowo.

As early as 7:30am, major roads leading to Oke Bola, Oke Ado and Agbeni were shut. Commuters were stranded due to unavailability of commercial vehicles.

At 8:30am, the convoy from Ogun State arrived at the Ibadan Toll Gate, where the body was received by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The body arrived at the Awolowo residence in Oke-Bola at 9.15am before it was moved to the Methodist Cathedral Church, Agbeni for a commendation service.

The service was coordinated by the Bishop of Ibadan, the Most Rev. Kehinde Stephen.

Rev Stephen recalled that the last time he had an encounter with Mrs. Awolowo was in February when Nigerian Tribune was launching a new printing machine.

“When she saw me she said His Grace it’s nice to see you again. Why have you abandoned me and do not visit me again? She asked after my children.

“She had a sound retentive memory and she was a fast reader. She was a caring mother who not only nurtured her children to excellence but cared about the welfare of the other people’s children,” he said.

The cleric said the Methodist Church will always respect the Awolowo dynasty for its love for education.

“The Awolowo family promoted quality education and is passionate about the welfare of the masses. Today, the education sector has been neglected by successive governments.

“If we make education a priority, it will save the masses and safeguard the future of our children.”

He appealed to the Awolowo family to sustain the Nigerian Tribune and open a special trust to sustain the newspaper.

Ajimobi said the Yoruba and Nigerians are proud of the late matriarch’s legacies.

“Ibadan is the home of Awolowos and the giants stride recorded by the late sage can be traced to Ibadan. Mama’s diligence and outstanding performance can be seen in the way she administered the Nigerian Tribune. She is remembered for her kind heartedness and her service to humanity.

“Mama was a detribalised Nigerian. Mama had strong discipline, principle and doggedness. She gave many people sound education and we are also making education one of our main priorities. Mama was an epitome of the Yoruba and motherhood,” he said.

The governor urged the family to emulate the matriarch’s exemplary lifestyle.

After the commendation service, the body was moved to the premises of African Newspapers of Nigeria Ltd, publishers of the Nigerian Tribune.

In his tribute, Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola said politicians should learn from the glorious exit and honour received by the late Mrs Awolowo.

“She represented the best in coordinating and supporting for the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awowolo. Any woman who stood with Baba Awolowo should be honoured,” Aregbesola said.

Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode said Nigerians are remembering mama today because she was the spirit behind the vision of the late sage.

He said:” We must continue with that spirit. We should not allow the Awolowo legacy to die because we are yet to achieve the vision of the late sage and we need all the support of womanhood to achieve it.”

The first female judge in Nigeria, Mrs Folake Solanke (SAN), said Mama’s death has been a great experience.

She said: “She was an exemplary wife. She reached an age worthy of celebration and her legacies will continue to live after her.”

The wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, said:” Mama lived a great life and all women should emulate her virtues. We should be able to stand the test of time.”

The first grandson, Segun Awolowo Jr, said what he would missed about his grandmother was her dependability, stability and ability to hold the family together.

In his vote of thanks, the Managing Director of Nigerian Tribune, Edward Dickson, promised that the firm would continue to sustain the Awolowo legacy and the newspaper.

In his remark, Governor Ajimobi said the Yoruba race and Nigerians at large are proud of the legacies the late matriarch left behind.

“Ibadan is the home of Awolowos and all the giants stride recorded by the late sage can be traced to Ibadan. The governor charged the Awolowo’s family to emulate HID’s exemplary lifestyle.

Shortly after the commendation service, the late matriarch’s body was moved to the premises of The Tribune Newspaper.

The remains of the Awolowo matriarch, Mrs. Hannah Idowu Dideolu (HID) Awolowo, arrived at the Park Lane, Apapa, Lagos home of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, for the beginning of the 11-day funeral rites.

The black ribbon decorated ambulance had the logo of the  undertaker, TOS Funeral.

The casket was accompanied by six pall bearers dressed in traditional clothes.  The casket arrived at 12.45pm.

Her daughters-Mrs Tola Oyediran, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu -and other family members received people who came to pay their last respect.

The ambulance stopped 500 metres to the Awolowos’. There was thunderous ovation and clapping from residents, who besieged the Awolowos’ home.

The pall bearers lifted the glass casket amidst singing, dancing and drumming and took it to one of the sitting rooms decorated with flowers and candles.

Mourners who filed past the open casket praised Mrs. Awolowo for her exemplary life. Politicians and associates eulogised the deceased during the lying-in-state and service of songs.

The service of songs started at 5pm. Her daughters read the first and second reading from the book of Ecclesiastes.

The Archbishop of Lagos (Anglican Communion), the Most Reverend Abebayo Akinde, said the day of reckoning will come. He urged the people to seek the face of God.

He said the people must go back to God and seek him, noting that God is the only Supreme Being who all must strive to do His wish.

“The only power worth serving is Jesus. The reality is that whether we believe it or not heaven is real and we must be prepared to make heaven.

“Whatever we achieve the choice is ours, if we wish to make heaven the choice is in our hands. Please make the right and wise choice. Now is the time to decide where we want to be.There is life beyond now please be wise and make the right choice.”

The arrival of the National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, set the place agog.

Tinubu said the progressives have lost its mother-pillar.

He said: “Nigeria will miss her sterling qualities, dedication to humanity and commitment to the ideas of the progressives. There is no doubt that we lost a great and virtuous woman, mother of the progressives and unifier of the country.

“Mama was a mother to us. She lived a committed family life. She was a disciplinarian and an embodiment of great values. I recall her commitment to her husband.

“She gave the greatest support and Nigeria has benefited immensely from her advice, discipline, commitment and love and we have seen that reflected here now. There is no gainsaying that we have lost a great woman and a mother.”

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Amobode said Mrs. Awolowo’s final journey from Lagos showed that her death was a loss to the Centre of Excellence.

“Mama’s final journey beginning from Lagos signifies the fact that this is a huge loss to Lagosians and the mere fact that also we are remembering Mama from Park Lane shows that she has been a major bastion of commerce and trade and the development of Lagos State. For us this is a Lagos loss, it is not even about Yoruba’s loss alone.”

Former Osun State Deputy Governor Olusola Obada said she was  full of affection and love.

“We are all going to miss her love, advice and support at all times. She does not care where you come from. She loved everybody and was just a great human being that God created to bless Nigeria.”

Afenifere chieftain Ayo Adebanjo said: “We have lost a woman who devoted herself to a cause, a pillar of support for her husband, unyielding. We wish for more of her type.”

President of the Ijaw Women Leadership Forum Chief Patience Ngene said the Ijaw community has lost a great benefactor, whose genuine concern for women permeated the Ijaw nation.

“Words cannot adequately describe how much her passage affect women and the Ijaw in particular.”

Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of The Trinity House, who prayed for the family, said Mama Awolowo never departed from the standard set by the late husband, who lived and died for the country.

He prayed that the nation will not fail.

At the ceremony were Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senator Muniru Muse,  former Lagos State Governor Alhaji Lateef Jakande, mother of the Vice-President Mrs. Bisi Osinbajo, Hajia Binta-Fatima Tinubu,  Hajia Abba Folawiyo,  Adekunle Ojora and others.

The large number of Boko Haram members surrendering or being captured should have among them those with information on some Chibok Girls. The interrogation teams must please ‘KEEP THEM APART AND SINGLE UNTIL AFTER INTERROGATION.’ It is unprofessional for suspects to be herded into one room or vehicle where they can concoct alibis or intimidate others.

Great sympathy to our Muslim brothers and sisters for the huge Hajj losses.

Hurray, Nigeria is polio-free. Wow, great!!! We owe the success to billions of dollars raised worldwide by Polio-Plus, a selfless-service initiative of Rotary International entering a PPP, Private Public Partnership, with the UN, governments, religious and traditional ruler levels. The battle cost Nigeria ‘8 Murdered Polio Martyrs’, health workers murdered on duty. What are their names? Has Nigeria immortalised them and cared for their families? They were murdered on the ‘Polio War Front’ saving Nigeria’s children.

Did the Dangote, Odetola, Adenuga, Babangida, Abdusalam, Abacha remnants, Elumelu, FBN, UBA, MTN, Etisalat, Dozie, Ovia, Osagie, Dantata, Oba Otudeko, Okorocha, Alakija, and other Foundations, the ‘BLACK MONEY’ fund any of this Polio MMM -Major Medical Miracle which would not have happened without the billions in ‘WHITE MONEY’? O Nigeria! Where are your saviours? Foreign as usual? You no shame, plus all your billions?

Nigerian billionaires have missed opportunities for impact. Bill Gates’s America is already built. Nigeria is underdeveloped and needs Nigerian billionaires’ money. Yet Nigeria’s billionaires are still in the ‘TAKE’ and not the ‘GIVE’ mode. $1b will change thousands of hospitals and schools in Nigeria. Get on your phone and ask your personal billionaire ‘What is your Legacy Project’. Having $1billion is not a legacy or even an achievement. It is a burden. Helping a billion people is an achievement. Ask me, if you have no ideas on bringing your billions to the people. How about an Aquarium in Lagos?

Chief Olu Falae is free. The police, congrats to them, should investigate the possibility that the kidnapping Fulani Herdsmen may also have kidnapped a Commissioner in Kogi. The police must not discriminate. They must use the same manpower for every kidnap. Too many innocent Nigerians have paid huge sums for freedom or paid with their lives. Yes, the jobs of the Police IGP and his zonal AIGs, did depend on rescuing Pa Falae alive. Their jobs are still at risk if police extrajudicial killings and police corruption are not eliminated immediately and certainly by the October monthly Presidential Anti-corruption Meeting of Heads of Uniformed and Armed Services. Just today I saw two ‘yellow fever’ and one black uniform taking money. In the last week, Police have killed three or four innocent citizens. Who exempted the police from ‘Buhari Change’? Buhari must soon sack someone in the Police as an example.

LET US ANNOUNCE TO NIGERIAN UNIFORMS THAT ‘IN THE NAME OF THEIR CHILDREN, THEY MUST GIVE UP EXTRAJUDICARY KILLINGS AND CORRUPTION’. Then, we will expose the recalcitrant bribe-takers. Problem solved, people saved and corruption eliminated. Simply by secretly using our millions of cellphones, switched on at stop-and-search points, to record proof, we can gather a million pictures and transmit them to media websites. Then the police will arrest their murderous psychopathic and wayward corrupt colleagues.

We the citizens demand that before unleashing armed police, the government must force the police to recruit 200 psychologists to carry out psychological tests on its weapon-carrying personnel who need programmes of breathalyser testing for alcohol before weapons are issued.

A shocking history lesson! I met a 15 year old attending College in Ibadan.. ‘I study government’, he replied my chitchat. I asked ‘What political incident took place this last weekend?’. He replied ‘I do not know’. I said ‘Mama HID Awolowo died at 100 years minus 2 months’. He showed no understanding. ‘Have you heard of Mama HID Awolowo?’ He replied ‘No.’ I asked ‘Do you know of ‘Awo’ or ‘Awolowo?’. The reply was ‘Yes. He owns the Awo University, in Ife’.

For a Western Region youth in school in 2015 to be so ignorant of Awoism is an indictment of education at home and school. Awolowo is beyond politics. Over-centralised curricula are stunting our youth. Eliminating local history will not create unity or federalism. We must teach geography, history- local, Federal, African and world. The young mind needs the challenges of scratching the surface of the Zulu, Kiriji, Fulani, Boar wars. Teach history – international, national and local. Every school must teach some unique local historical, geographic, personality and political content.  I had the honour of giving the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation Lecture at NIIA, Lagos, when Abacha misruled. Mama HID Awolowo will indeed Rest In Perfect Peace, RIPP, but the Awolowo story must be taught in South-west schools.

The British and Americans immortalise figures and events in history through TV, radio, music, plays, films, cartoons, documentaries and study. We Nigerians should too through Nollywood et cetera. Where is the film ‘Awolowo’ starring whom as Awo the youth?

So FIFA and VW are exposed for corruption. The VW boss has gone and Blatter is going. Saraki will likely follow with his name expunged from being Senate President if proven to be fraudulently obtained. He should refund any salary illegally received.

The 40km Ibadan Lagos expressway jam needs urgent patch/patch filling of potholes at Redeemed, Mowe and Ibafo, today.
