  • High society mourns with Mutiu Sunmonu

Death is a robber that steals life’s most precious possession. It comes stealthily like a thief and turns day into night within seconds.

For former MD of Shell and current chairman of Julius Berger, Mutiu Sunmonu, death is the malevolent creature that has stolen the love of his life. After stalking her for some time in the detestable garb of cancer, the grim reaper finally did its worst on Monday, plunging Mutiu and the entire Sunmonu family into inconsolable grief.

The late Mrs Sunmonu was known to all and sundry as an exemplar of the good wife. She used her husband’s considerable fortune to better the lot of many and was loved for her caring acts towards the downtrodden. She was like a beacon of hope for them, and for others, a model of virtue and grace.

Still reeling from the shocking news, members of the high society have been visiting the home of the Sunmonus to console the family and offer the little comfort they can to Mutiu and his children in their trying times.

  • High society rallies round Pauline Tallen

If power and money divide politicians, partying and grieving unite them. So it has been with the outpouring of emotions for Pauline Tallen, the Minister of State for Science and Technology, on the death of her husband, Mr John Tallen, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83.

Until his death, John was a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the same platform by which his wife served as a minister during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s first term. She later became the deputy governor of Plateau State before she unsuccessfully used the platform of the Labour Party to contest the governorship seat against the then governor, Jonah Jang.

Leading the women of class and substance in paying their condolences was the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, who paid a solidarity visit to the home of the Tallens. The first lady commiserated with the woman, urging her not to wallow in too much grief.

Following the first lady’s example, the Tallens’ abode has become a Mecca of sorts to mostly female politicians who have been taking turns to console the bereaved woman.

High society honours Okoya at 76

Nothing of real worth can ever be bought. Love, friendship, honour, valour, and respect all have to be earned. Rasaki Akanni Okoya has earned all these traits and is being celebrated as a man of outstanding qualities. The billionaire industrialist and Aare of Lagos is the founder of Eleganza Group of Companies whose sphere of operation spans the entire West African region.

Last Tuesday, he celebrated his 76th birthday in a low-key party in an ambience of sophistication. Although it was a modest party, Okoya seized the opportunity to give glory to God for his life and also exhibited an act of benevolence by reaching out to the less- privileged.

The birthday celebration started with a prayer session at Oluwanisola Mosque, where he doled out gifts to people, including food items and Eleganza products. In attendance were Prince Samuel Adedoyin, Sir Olu Okeowo, Chief Kessington Adebutu, Demola Seriki, Otunba Adekunle and Erelu Ojuolape Ojora, Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, Otunba Alao Akala, Justice Adesola Oguntade, Hajia Abah Folawiyo and many others who added colour to the event.

Pillars of high society honour Mike Okonkwo

A man is not honoured for what he receives but for what he gives. Last weekend, nobles and pillars of high society turned up to honour Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) as he gave out the hand of his only child, Uche Okonkwo, in marriage.

The respected Bishop exuded pride as he gave his daughter’s hand in marriage to her dashing hearthrob, Onyekachi Asugha. The grand white wedding held last Saturday at the Cathedral of His Glory, Anthony Oke, Lagos. The service had a unique twist to it as the Bishop did not only walk his daughter down the aisle but also performed the joining of the couple. The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A. Adeboye, was on hand to bless the couple.

Penultimate weekend, Uche and her fiancé had their traditional wedding at the Grandeur Events Centre in Lagos, while their white wedding took place yesterday at the TREM Headquarters in Gbagada, Lagos.
