‘UN food for Northeast not hijacked’

The United Nations World Food Programme yesterday denied reports in some online media that its food supply meant for Damboa in Borno State was “hijacked.”

In a statement yesterday, the World Food Programme (WFP) described the report as “totally inaccurate.”

The statement said: “All WFP food dispatched in Nigeria over the past week arrived safely at destinations without incident.

“No WFP convoy was on the road to Damboa when the incident allegedly took place.

“The WFP takes every precaution to ensure that all food is delivered safely and intact to hungry people who need it the most.

“This includes strictly following and complying with all necessary security protocols for dispatching food convoys in high risk areas such as Damboa.

“The WFP would of course condemn any diversion of humanitarian assistance.”

  • Johnson: Mimiko has hijacked Labour Party

Johnson: Mimiko has hijacked Labour Party

Kolawole Johnson, who just resigned as the Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Ondo State, spoke with LEKE AKEREDOLU on Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s alleged plan to impose a governorship candidate on the party.

Why did you resign as the LP Chairman?

This question reminds me of 2014 when we decided to stay back to ensure the party was not buried by the same people that are battling for its soul today. The answer then was that it was principle and that has not changed today. Principle! I have read different versions of report that gave reasons for my resignation. Some partly correct while some are mischief per excellence. A revered friend sent me one and I replied. He was furious because he knew what transpired, he was aware of the drama for weeks before it finally ended with my letter. He expected me to be angry but I kept smiling because I knew I have done my best to the satisfaction of my conscience, my faith and my creeds. I expect sound minds to read between the lines. The reason is well spelt out. I said and you can quote again: “It is with a sense of strong character which determines moral purpose and set of things we choose or avoid, that I tender my resignation letter today”. The elders will say, ‘Kaka ki Kiniun se akapo ekun, wan yaa se ode won lotooto ni. I leave you to interpret that. I have raised my voice in the public space to speak on certain matters, will I turn back to say they were no longer so? No! You must have some measure of respect for your words. Perhaps you know, it is expected of you at some levels to see more, hear more but talk less. So, I will not go into some details in order not to give room for some folks to think we are pained. No, I am actually glad with my head high that I stood for what I believe to the end. I am proud of that. Though many stakeholders are actually angry at my decision to quit, but I had to at that point. It was becoming too deadly and wisdom is profitable to direct. I don’t know if you were at the venue of that stakeholders meeting on Saturday, July 30.  They never and can never accuse me of betrayal.

But, it was rumoured that your executive at the state level was sacked. how true is this?

Let me laugh in Spanish. That is to show how pained they are. I informed the national body of my decision to resign and dropped my letter few days after. My letter was duly received by the national secretariat on the 28th of July. The photocopies of the letter are here for you. Can you see the date? Well, I am not surprised because you know where you got that version of innuendoes. Are you expecting anything better? When governors’ aides start writing releases for another political party, then, you shouldn’t be surprised. When some of you called to ask why I was not at the stakeholders’ meeting of July 30, I informed them of my resignation and sent the letter to them but added a caveat that it is only for proofs and nothing more. Dissolving the body long after my exit should not be a surprise anyway. I, Kolawole, resigned willingly. If stomach ulcer ( Etanu ),  will not allow some folks to take in that peacefully, I forgive them wholeheartedly.

Governor Mimiko was alleged to be plotting to impose a candidate on the party, ahead of governorship poll. Is this true?

Let me remind you that I was not present at that particular meeting. Infact my absence was responsible for its abrupt end. I would resigned some few days before the meeting and I was trying as much as possible to ensure my exit does not lead to crisis so I had to maintain an expressible silence. Of course, those expressing that fear know what they’re talking about and I am sure your people would have gotten more information about it from them. I learnt one of the elders in the meeting alleged that the fellow to be used resigned that same week or thereabout. Now, let me take you back to the interview I granted some months ago. I said and I quote “ I don’t know their definition of anti-party. You belong to a party openly. yet, you are still fighting dirty to plant yourself in another party claiming you want to have a fall back option.” I threatened to even write the PDP to report the anti-party activities. So, the people at the stakeholders meeting are aware of all of these and more. Perhaps some of them have been spoken to for possible support for a certain individual who was in the governor’s cabinet but working to run under Labour Party. But, nobody would doubt the fact that I would have resisted that vehemently as the sitting chairman. Like a revered elder told me that he would rather work for the number one than staying with a second option that will mess him up. Infact, the drama that led to my exit was not without the intrigue of their plot. it’s all about the game.

However, let me be clear, having that option in the face of the lingering crisis in their party is not a crime but the way they are going about it is inhuman. I hope they know that the master trapper can also be entrapped.

Do you think the LP will bounce back in the state?

That is one question we should leave to time. However, note this; the true owners of the party shall lay hold on her some day. I strongly believe in the ethos of Labour Party. Leaving the Alliance for Democracy to Labour Party was a good experience; the progressivism spirit is alive. That is why we are bent on having a party and not someone’s chess board. My only fear now is that most of our members who have laboured so hard to keep the party alive in the past two years have vowed to quit and seek refuge elsewhere.

  • How a cabal hijacked cooking gas business

How a cabal hijacked cooking gas business

Last month, the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly called cooking gas, went up by almost 30 per cent. What is responsible? A cabal in the LPG sub-sector has hijacked the business, thwarting the objective of the Federal Governmen to make the product affordable. What is the solution to the problem? EMEKA UGWUANYI examines the situation.

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) saw it coming. Last June 3, it raised the alarm over the malpractices in the liquefied petroleum subsector, warning that if nothing was done, price rise was imminent.

Shortly after, the price of cooking gas rose sharply from N2.3 million  to N4.3 million for 20 tonnes. The cost of filling a 12.5-kilogramme cylinder went up from N3,000 to N4,000.

Investigation by The Nation revealed that off-takers appointed by the Nigeria LNG hijacked the LPG business as they control the shipping and the terminals from which the product is supplied to various sales points in the country.

After a screening, the NLNG appointed six firms to lift the product to terminals and depots in Lagos for distribution to consumers. The off-takers, which are Le Global, Harig, Linetrade, Chimons, Greenfield, and Hyson, an arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), lift 150,000 metric tonnes yearly. However, it was alleged that the off-takers were conniving with terminal owners to hike the price.

According to sources, this happened because the NLNG and other regulatory bodies failed in their supervisory roles.

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers (LPGAR) National Chairman, Mr. Michael Umudu, confirmed that the LPG business has been hijacked  by a cabal. But he did not mention names.

He said: “I am not here to mention names, but we all know that NLNG appointed a selected number of firms to receive and market the product. They should explain to us the factors that brought us to this precarious situation. They (off-takers) should explain to LPG stakeholders, the government and the consumers what happened. We worked together to persuade the government to intervene when the sector was almost dead in 2007. They were appointed to receive and redistribute with the intention of making the product available to other marketers because it is not possible for every marketer to receive directly. Now see what is happening. Our common patrimony has been hijacked by some people who are playing the ostrich.

“I know what we suffered in the past to rescue this industry and now a few privileged ones are taking advantage of the sector. This has not happened in the industry before. We have never witnessed supply shortage without any known cause. The last major scarcity we had was in 2013 when NLNG had a dispute with NIMASA and the distribution was halted as part of sanctions placed on NLNG by NIMASA. The crisis lasted for weeks, but LPG price was not up to what it is today. There were marginal rise in price in the past, which were caused by rise in price of crude oil.

“We were able to easily adjust because the effect was minimal. But now no genuine reason has been given, and the price kept going up. We suspect stage-managed supply shortages to be cause. The situation is such that the LPG industry has been pocketed by a few. Some of them did not even participate in the process that led to the relative growth  being witnessed in the sector in recent years.”

According to him, the alleged cabal does not think about the growth and future of the LPG sub-sector, because “all they think is self, self and only self”.

“The cabal protects its members interest only. They are organised and cohesive in their dealings,” he added.

The alleged hijack of the LPG business, it was learnt, started when a private depot was the only depot selling LPG. “The depot kept increasing  the price and everyone was complaining, including some off-takers, mainly Nigerians. The depot was accused of being owned by foreigners, whose interest was not the progress of Nigeria, but to exploit Nigerians. Eventually, another consignment arrived three weeks after in which many indigenous off-takers had allocation. We expected them to sell at normal price or at least bearable price as a show of patriotism, but instead the price continued to go up higher,” a source said.

According to the source, members of the cabal are so powerful that they presented one-sided data to the NLNG. “They are highly connected. They present themselves as if they represent the common interests of the sector. So, what is happening is that the NLNG is made to believe that there is normalcy in the sector whereas the reverse is the case. It is just unfortunate,” he added.

On what the members of ALPGAM, NALPGAM and LPGAR are doing to address the problem, Umudu told The Nation that the only organisation that is independent of this cartel is the one he heads and that is LPGAR branch of NUPENG.

“They are so powerful and parade a lot of cash. Of course, you know what money can do in Nigeria. They do everything to suppress and impoverish gas retailers and their umbrella body – LPGAR. But we don’t mind. We will continue to provide checks and balances in the sector. “We are planning a number of events to tell the whole world what is happening.

“Apart from publicity, we are planning to petition relevant authorities and if that does not suffice, we move to the next stage which is protest. Our lawyers are already instructed to secure for us necessary police clearance. We are planning to stage some protests to bring this to the notice of some arms of government.

“We are peace loving people but should not submit to this kind of exploitation. Though the president of Nigeria LP Gas Association, Mr. Dayo Adeshina, told me he is planning a meeting of the stakeholders to address the problem. We are waiting and hope it happens soon.’’

Umudu said LPG retailers planned to meet with agencies, such as the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and Products and Pipeline Marketing Company (PPMC), on the issue. “Meeting the regulatory bodies is part of activities we have planned for next week and beyond. This battle may take longer than one may ordinarily imagine because the powers of the people and organisations involved. I don’t take them for granted at all. They approximate themselves to the whole sector.

“They often advance the argument that it is a free market. But they don’t realise that even in the Western world where liberalisation originated, you dare not manipulate the system for personal gains,” he said, adding that the monopoly must be broken and the NLNG should get more involved in the process beyond making the product available. They should monitor what happens at the transportation level.

  • EgyptAir hijacked, passengers freed

An EgyptAir plane was Tuesday hijacked  and forced to land in Cyprus, where most passengers were eventually allowed to get off.

Egyptian and Cypriot officials said the crew remained on board,

The  motivation of the hijacker an Egyptian was unclear, but President Nicos Anastasiades said the hijacking was “not something that has to do with terrorism” and a Cyprus government official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation, said the man “seems (to be) in love.”

A civil aviation official, also speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t allowed to disclose details of ongoing negotiations, said the man gave negotiators the name of a woman who lives in Cyprus and asked to give her an envelope. It’s unclear what relationship she and the man have.

Flight MS181 took off from the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria en route to Cairo with at least 55 passengers, including 26 foreigners, and a seven-member crew.

  • How oil barons, others hijacked Senate, House election

How oil barons, others hijacked Senate, House election

Tuesday elections of Dr. Bukola Saraki as Senate President and Mr. Yakubu Dogara as House of Representatives Speaker tipped in their favour on account of the intervention of top businessmen, high-profile investors, and some ex-Ministers in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, it was gathered yesterday.

The plots were hatched in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Abeokuta, Abuja and Ilishan, Ogun State by four serving governors and seven ex-governors in what a source described as a bid to “decimate APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.”

Two of the serving governors are from the South-West and one from the North-West, while two of the ex-governors are from the South-West, three from the North-West, one from the North-East and one from the South-South zone.

An influential Emir was also involved in the anti-Tinubu campaign, according to sources. The monarch had first sought Tinubu’s support for Saraki’s bid in a move he described as “politically strategic” for the future of Nigeria.

Sources said that although Saraki had aspired to lead the Senate as a “mere political game which anyone could win,” the contest attracted vested interests because of the anti-corruption agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Some oil barons, especially those indicted in the subsidy scandal, high-net worth investors, and top businessmen were said to have found it difficult to reach out to Buhari.

They decided to form a ring around the new President by hijacking the National Assembly through which they believe they could checkmate and frustrate any anti-Jonathan policies initiated by the Buhari government.

It was learnt that the affected businessmen, some of whom benefited from curious waivers, concessions and unmerited subsidy funds, had reached out to Tinubu to assist them to appeal to Buhari for soft-landing on ongoing investigations but the ex-Lagos State Governor declined to intervene.

One of those whose investment was linked with the missing $20billion oil cash personally begged Tinubu who insisted that any financial infraction must be punished.

The high-class businessmen were said to have found allies in four serving governors, seven ex-governors who allegedly have a political axe to grind with Tinubu.

With the support of a top APC leader eyeing the presidency in 2019, it was agreed by the amalgam of forces to “cut Tinubu to size” by taking over the National Assembly.

The plot of the aggrieved businessmen was buoyed by the fact that the ‘New PDP’ elements in APC felt “sidelined” in the scheme of things by not getting any of the top posts.

Three highly-placed sources gave a rare insight into the intrigues behind the election of Saraki as Senate President and Dogara as House Speaker.

A former governor said: “The coup against APC in the Senate assumed a magnitude which Saraki and Dogara did not imagine. What appeared as a mere aspiration turned into hi-wire politics and business intrigues. These aspirants did not expect that the race for Senate Presidency and House Speakership would turn into a big project that would threaten the fabric of the APC.”

A member of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the APC admitted that some serving governors and former governors in the new governing party participated actively in the plot.

The BOT member said it was shocking that those initially thought to be Tinubu’s loyalists were among the aggrieved APC governors and ex-governors.

The source added: “Little did the undiscerning observers of the power play know that some of the APC leaders, especially those who have succeeded in forming a ring around President Muhammadu Buhari, were a party to the plot. They have since been shedding crocodile tears to give an impression of their commitment to the party’s tenets.

“They did not only support Saraki and Dogara against the candidates of their party, they went as far as participating in the wooing of PDP Senators who rallied against their candidates.

”At the outset, Tinubu supported the candidacy of Senator George Akume from the same North-Central geopolitical zone with Saraki as the Senate President. Akume is a known friend of Tinubu and the president did not hide his preference for Lawan.

“However, Tinubu had to withdraw his support for George Akume when presidential preference became obvious and it was made clear that the Northeast, particularly Borno and Yobe should be rewarded having been marginalized by past governments apparently because of the states’ solid support for the opposition. It was at this point that Tinubu shifted support to Lawan.

However, it became a moral burden for Tinubu to communicate the new decision to his friend. But he eventually did and encouraged him to step down for Lawan. Akume then agreed to take the Deputy Senate President slot.

“Initially, he turned down the offer, believing it was the turn of the North-Central to be the Senate President, but later felt he had no option than to accept it. He said there was no need to rock the boat of the party or tamper with the peace of the fledgling administration.

“Curiously, but true, certain elements in APC resolved to work against the interest of, not only their leader, Asiwaju Tinubu, but also that of President Buhari. They chose three musketeers to coordinate the project which will demystify their leader. These beneficiaries of Tinubu political goodwill held clandestine meetings on different occasions on how to outsmart both their master and the president, while giving maximum support to the candidacy of Saraki.

“ Part of their strategy was to invite some of the moneybags with financial baggage, who would want to curry the president’s favour to escape investigations, dis-empower Tinubu by circulating negative stories about him and thus cause disaffection between him, Buhari and some other leaders in the APC.

“They also asked the president to live up to his words of ‘belonging to everyone and belonging to no one’ as a way of further boosting his soaring democratic credentials. They were also able to frame up Senator Lawan, who has been in the Senate since 2007, as a marked boy in the upper chamber

”At one of the meetings held on Thursday June 4, 2015, these three musketeers and APC accomplices were said to have invited the businessmen to sell the Saraki candidacy to them, with an assurance that there would be a shield for any probe against them.

“Well, these business and financial moguls with vast interests in fast moving consumer goods, the downstream sector, banking and hospitality industry had no option than to key into the plan.

“ Consequently, the three musketeers expanded their frontier, sought and got support from some members of the National Working Committee   to  further give ‘credibility’ to their action as well as convince the president of the need to stay away from Tinubu, who according to them, was becoming overbearing within the party.”

A PDP chieftain spoke extensively on how his party negotiated and benefited from the coup against APC.

He said: “Capitalizing on his past influence in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the dwindling fortunes of the party of late, Saraki and some members of the ‘New PDP’ caucus employed a former South-South governor who helped to perfect the strategy of winning other PDP Senators over for his candidacy in exchange for choice position compensations.  Saraki also brought in a South-West state governor with a promise of soft-landing.

“Having been sold the possibility of negotiating with the pro-Saraki elements, the PDP elected senators saw it as an opportunity to get their pound of flesh from the APC. They also felt they could position themselves for juicy Senate committees. With 49 Senators, they resolved to demand for the concession of the office of the Deputy President of the Senate for PDP. They said once the slot was given to PDP, it would  go to the South-East

“A former top official of the Senate was then saddled with the job  of getting his colleagues together for a “retreat’ in Port Harcourt, where they did not only discuss the modalities of decimating the APC Senators but how to hijack the Senate

“The strategy included inviting some of those involved in the fuel subsidy fraud to back them financially with a promise to ensure that President Buhari would not be able to pursue their matter. The financiers were assured that no such probe would see the light of day because some forces around the president were also with them in the game.”

The Port Harcourt meeting resolved that in order to ward off any suspicion, they would continue to discuss with Tinubu and other APC NWC members, selling them a dummy that PDP Senators would support the APC candidates for both Senate and House of Reps in order to ensure a peaceful reign in both houses.

The mafia fell for the proposition and supported the execution of the Saraki-for-Senate-President project. The expensive presidential suite on the 10th floor of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja was the coordination base.

“And in order to make it appear that their party was carried along in the scheming, the PDP Senators briefed a former Chairman, Board of Trustees of PDP and enlisted his and the entire party’s support for them to go along with the Saraki team.

“The ex-BOT chairman, however, advised PDP senators to meet the Sunday night before the election to put the matter to vote in order not to betray one another. Of course the idea received a unanimous voting both as a result of anti-Tinubu agenda and the joy of watching the ego of the APC deflated on Tuesday.

“When Tinubu learnt of the Port Harcourt meeting and all that transpired, he met with the former official of the Senate who dismissed the plot as a mere rumour and that APC should take the promise of the PDP Senators to the bank. Well, they did and the rest is now history.”

Sources said last night that Buhari had “uncovered” the plot and was weighing his options.

A presidency source added: “This discovery made one of the spokesmen of the President to come out strongly against the ‘coup’. The spokesman was able to give the mindset of the President about what transpired. What happened embarrassed Buhari and he has been trying to intervene to broker peace and ensure reconciliation.”

The source further said that the President is determined to implement his reform agenda, bring to book all those who soiled their hands in the last dispensation.

The source added the new leadership of the National Assembly would not deter him from pursuing his goals. “Did former President Olusegun Obasanjo not live with a hostile senate under the late Chuba Okadigbo and adversarial House of Representatives under ex-Speaker Ghali Na’Abba? Why do corrupt businessmen think that they can escape justice by controlling the National Assembly?”

‘Boko Haram hijacked to achieve Nigeria’s break-up’

The founder and President of the Divine Ministry for Inter-Religious Harmony (DMIRH), Prophet David Folorunsho Oyekan, has claimed that the Boko Haram insurgent group known in the public domain was not the original group that was formed in Borno in 2009 by the late Mohammed Yusuf.

Oyekan, in a statement, titled: “A final spiritual submission of divine demand of God Almighty to the Nigeria”, said the new Boko Haram group came about because some Nigerians being used by “the darkness” wanted to achieve the prediction of the breakup of the nation.

His words: “Minions of darkness hijacked the Boko Haram group of the late Mohammed Yusuf. Their intention is to thwart the peace that was ushered into the country with the signing of the agreement with the Niger Delta militants. They capitalised on the emergence of Goodluck Jonathan.”

The founder of the spiritual non-governmental organisation said God has a purpose and plan for Nigeria and that the grand design of the Creator must be achieved.

God, according to Oyekan, had a hand in the amalgamation of Nigeria and was not happy with the acts of disunity in the country.

‘How we hijacked fuel tankers with fake army uniforms’

Two impostors, Okoh Patrick (48) and Aniekan Emmanuel (32) have been arrested by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly leading a six-man robbery gang whose members paraded themselves as highway traffic task officials in order to hijack and divert trucks conveying petroleum products. Patrick, a 48-year-old native of Iselukwu, Delta State, was said to have paraded himself as a combatant soldier while Emmanuel, an indigene of Rivers State, claimed he was a merchant naval officer.

Four other suspected mebers of the gang arrested by SARS include Alex Ogbu Ugbuagu, a 35-year old native of Abakaliki, Ebonyi State; Izuchukwu Udeagwu, a 36-year-old native of Umudioka town in Dunukofia Local Government Area, Anambra State; Thirty-nine-year-old Evans Boniface from Mbano, Imo State and forty-eight-year-old Taiwo Oyadara from Ikirun, Osun State. The syndicate was said to have been smashed by SARS during its fifth operation.

The first operation, according to a police source, occurred in August 2013 when one Alex Ugbuagu and Boniface connived with one Alloy and one Kazeem to hijack a truck at gunpoint. They allegedly diverted the truck to a filling station in Ikorodu between 3 am and 4 am while the victim driver of the truck has remained in the hospital since then.

In the second operation, the gang allegedly snatched a PMS truck between Ijora and Apapa, Lagos in March 2014 and sold the content worth about N3 million to a filling station in Ajah, Lagos for N1.3 million.

The third operation occurred at Iyana Oworo, Lagos where they hijacked a truck conveying diesel and sold it to a filling station in Ikorodu while the fourth operation involved a truck containing diesel, which was snatched at gunpoint around Toyota bus-stop along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway on July 18, 2014.

The fifth operation was said to have occurred also in Lagos on July 21 when they snatched a truck containing petrol on its way to Sango-Ota, Ogun State. The police source said that luck ran out on the gang after their fifth operation.

  • Nine vessels hijacked in Gulf of Guinea in three months, says Alison-Madueke

Nine vessels hijacked in Gulf of Guinea in three months, says Alison-Madueke

Petroleum Resources Minister Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, yesterday said the Gulf of Guinea (GoG), in the first half of the year, witnessed the hijack of nine vessels and 55 unauthorised vessel.

She spoke at the ongoing maiden Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Africa Conference, organised by the Nigerian Navy and International Quality and Productivity Centre (IQPC) in Lagos.

Represented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company’s (NNPC’s) Group Managing Director (GMD) Andrew Yakubu, the minister said tackling sea crimes, especially illegal oil theft, must be multi-dimensional with the involvement of all GoG nations.

She said: “According to United States (US) Naval Intelligence Report, the region, in the first half of 2013, has witnessed nine hijacking incidents. Beyond hijacking, it also reported that there have been 55 incidents of unauthorised vessel boarding and kidnapping.

“Disruption in crude oil supply not only affects countries, such as Nigeria and Angola. It accounts for 47 per cent and 34 per cent of the total GoG oil supply, but ultimately has an impact on the global economy.

“It is, therefore, important that policing the sea lanes of the GoG must be a joint responsibility of the GoG countries and their allies, since the problem of illegal crude oil theft is multi-dimensional.”

Mrs Alison-Madueke said the GoG consists of 15 countries with oil production exceeding 5.4 million barrels per day as at last year.

She added: “This is more than the total import by European Union’s (EU’s) 27 countries and more than half of the U.S crude imports.

  • ‘Fake MASSOB members hijacked sit-at-home’

    ‘Fake MASSOB members hijacked sit-at-home’

    •Victim relives ordeal
    •30 missing, eight arrested

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday said its members did not perpetrate any crime during the sit-at-home it declared in Southeastern states.

MASSOB’s Deputy Director of Information Mazi Chris Mocha said those who committed crimes in Anambra State were fake MASSOB members.

Mocha said eight members were killed by soldiers; some others have been declared missing.

He said a 14-year old boy was killed at Anyamelum Local Government Area by soldiers; three others were killed at Bridge Head Approach, Onitsha.

The MASSOB leader said a man, Chukwuma, was arrested at Ogbunike Tollgate; another man, Innocent Okpoto, was arrested at Awka-Etiti.

He said robbery and vandalism were carried out by fake MASSOB members in collaboration with Association of Igbo Youths Organisation (AIYO) members.

Mocha said: “The fake MASSOB members and AIYO members set ablaze a police van.”

A man, Herbert Opara, who is based in the US, said he was robbed by people , who claimed to be members of MASSOB.

“It’s unbelievable that the Southeastern states would allow some groups of robbers to operate as MASSOB members.

“I was traveling to Lagos from Owerri on June 8. At the Onitsha-Owerri Road, near Idemili Bridge Oba/Obosi, our bus was stopped and all passengers were robbed.

“The suspects claimed they were MASSOB members and have the right to do anything in Igbo land.

“When I pleaded with them that I am an Igbo man living in the US that they should return my briefcase, they shot into the air.

“I stood my ground and asked them to return my documents and take the money.

“They started to beat me, shouting Anyi egbugo ozu, meaning they have made big money.

“One of them told me to open the bag and take my passport. I was given N10,000 to return to Lagos on the condition that I will not report to the army or police.”

In Abia State, the group said 30 of its members are missing.

But the police said only nine MASSOB members were arrested for allegedly carrying arms and combustible materials.

But the leaders of the group- Solution Edward, Davidson Ohaegbu and Emmanuel Eroh- said the whereabouts of 30 of their members are still unknown.

They said they have reported at the Ikwuano police station, the area where they were last seen.

Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna said six MASSOB members were arrested at the weekend in Ikwuano with cans of petrol, matches and used tyres.

Ogbonna said the suspects were transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation.
