    Fare thee well, ‘peoples’ HOD’

It was a tearful farewell, last Friday, for  Prof Michael Ogbeidi, the late Head of Department of History and Strategic Studies in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Staff and students gathered at his funeral to pay their last respects. GERALD NWOKOCHA and ‘BAYO OGUNDIPE (Diplomacy and Strategic Studies) report.

He was described as “peoples’ teacher”. The death of Michael Ogbeidi, a professor of Business History, struck the University of Lagos (UNILAG) like a thunderbolt. Until his death last month, Prof Ogbeidi was the Head of Department of History and Strategic Studies.

The deceased took ill last year, a condition that warranted his absence from the school for several weeks. He resumed this year after he recovered. Weeks after, he took ill again and died.

It was all tears last weekend at the funeral of the late Ogbeidi. At the Service of Songs held at the University Chapel of Light, staff and students of the Faculty of Arts paid glowing tributes to the late lecturer, remembering fond memories of personal encounters with him.

Dr David Aworawo, his colleague at the department, described the late Ogbeidi as a “highly knowledgeable scholar”, adding that the deceased had “unique understanding” of research in public history and socio-economic development.

Another colleague, Dr Irene Osemeka, said: “The late Ogbeidi’s horizon as an academic was beyond the university. He organised many conferences and programmes that brought the town and gown together. He believed strongly that the university should be an integral part of the society, thus making efforts to create nexus between academics and people in Nigeria’s industrial sector. Beyond this, Ogbeidi never allowed his deteriorating health to restrain him from achieving his lofty dream of becoming a professor.”

It was learnt that the late Ogbeidi pioneered the discipline of Business History, which he created out of Economic History. His work on Fundamentals of Business History was described as cutting-edge research and an excellent piece.

Taiwo Olubiyi, a Master’s student of Diplomacy and Strategic Studies, said Prof Ogbeidi’s scholarship endeared him to many students. “His doors were always open to serious students. He was not just the HOD, he was a father to all students,” Taiwo said.

Florence Sulyman, a Diplomacy and Strategic Studies student, could not hold back tears as tributes poured in for the Ogbeidi.

She said: “Prof Ogbeidi was a principled man. He treated everyone like his children. His death is a big blow, not just to his family but also to humanity. It is sad that he had to die this time.”

Tokunbo Philips, who had personal relationship with the deceased, said: “Our paths crossed in 1999 when I had a problem with the Students’ Union officials. He defied the torrential rain that day and came to my rescue. He called me into his office and gave me advice when I wanted to marry. He always wanted his students to be happy, emotionally and academically. This is why I had to leave my workplace to honour him. We would miss him.”

It was learnt that Ogbeidi was greatly influenced by the works of Prof Akinjide Osuntokun and the late Prof Babatunde Agiri. The late Agiri, it was gathered, stimulated Ogbeidi’s interest in Economic History, while Prof Osuntokun taught him International Relations and Public History.

The late Ogbeidi, aged 55, hailed from Fuga in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State. He studied Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degrees in History at UNILAG. He was employed as Lecturer Grade II at UNILAG in 1997, after which he got his doctoral degree in the same institution. He was appointed a Professor in October 2015. He is survived by his wife, three children and three grandchildren.

    History students mourn ‘amiable’ HOD

It was a moment of grief at the Department of History and Strategic Studies in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), last Monday. Students gathered to mourn the department’s head, Prof Michael Ogbeidi, who died on February 25 after a protracted illness.

Clad in black, the students held a candlelight procession round the campus in honour of the late Head of Department (HOD). They turned out in large number for the procession, which started at 7pm. They moved round the school, chanting dirges. Some of them wept as they paid tributes to the deceased.

The late Prof Ogbeidi took ill last year. He resumed this year after he recovered. Weeks after, he took ill again and died.

In tears, many students spoke on his “kindness” and “fatherly care” towards them. Deborah Emmanuel, a 200-Level student said: “I received the news of Prof Ogbeidi’s death with shock. At first, I thought it was a hoax. When I learnt it was true, I broke down in tears and wept uncontrollably. He was a nice man. I can’t forget the favour he did to me while I was in my first year. He helped me with the signing of my course form. I would miss his words of encouragement, too. He always made us believe nothing is impossible as long as we are determined.”

Razak Aminu, also in 200-Level, described him as a “lovable father” and “easygoing teacher”. His death, Razak said, has left a vacuum that may not be filled in the department. He said: “We never saw it coming. He was an easygoing lecturer and a mentor to all students. We will miss him dearly. He talked to us as a lovable father and we will miss his word of encouragement.”

Suleiman Oluwatosin, a 400-Level student, said the deceased taught Business History and he was supposed to have his lecture on the day the procession was held.

“I am sad, because we have lost a fine lecturer. In fact, today (procession day) is supposed to be the time of his lecture. He postponed the lecture because he took ill. We will miss him.”

The procession ended with  prayers at the front of Faculty of Arts. Students sang dirges as they gathered their candles around the picture of the deceased before leaving for their hostels.

Don’t beg lecturers for marks, HOD warns freshers

The Head of Department (HOD) of Mass Communication of University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, has warned freshers against begging their teachers for marks.

The department, she said, would recommend expulsion for any student who engages in such act. She said the school would not tolerate indiscipline, urging the students to abstain from what could make them lose their admission.

She spoke last Friday at an orientation organised by the Mass Communication Students’ Association (MCSA) for the freshers.

She said punctuality and obedience remained were the conerstone of their success, adding that the department was concerned about how students would get the best training to help them survive.

Ogwezzy, an associate professor of Mass Communication, said: “Let me emphasise that punctuality and class attendance are very highly required. If any student doesn’t have up to 65 per cent attendance, the university rule is that such a student won’t write the examination. Therefore, you must manage your time well.”

She warned them against joining unlawful organisations, urging them to be obedient.

“Once you are obedient, no lecturer will maltreat you,” she said.

A guest speaker at the event, Dr Shuaibu Husseini, urged the students to do away with assumptions and get the best from the department. He advised them to measure their level of engagement in social activities, noting that their primary aim in school is academic.

He said: “Invest in books, especially the e-version. Identify friends that will assist you positively in your studies. Don’t be among students that will go and be begging lecturers for marks.”

The HOD said: “There are so many vices and dangerous trends students engage themselves in. Some people fraudulently collect money to help students manipulate their results. Don’t fall into their hands because they cannot help you with anything. You must not join them or seek for their help. You all have equal access to your lecturers. Our offices are open for you. Feel free to come to us and explain your challenges.”
