  • UNILAG group holds command performance

    One of the theatre groups in the Department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos (UNILAG) will tomorrow stage a command performance of Sango De Ihima.  The event will hold from 4pm at the Creative Arts Theatre Hall, University of Lagos.

    Sango De Ihima is a Cuban interpretation and a version of the African story of Sango.

    It is more of an adaptation of Yoruba costomology about the story of Sango and his encounter with Obatala, Osun, OyaObba, Iku and other gods interpreted in the Cuban way.

    The Stage Manager of the Production, Flourish Olalekan, said the performance is designed to showcase African culture and its importance and connection with the Cuban culture.

    Head of Department Prof. Olapeju Olayiwola said the performance would showcase the competencies and capabilities of the students to engage in proper production, exhibit their innate talents and potentials in creative arts.

  • Beer Festival holds October 25

    The Second Nigeria Beer Festival billed to hold from September 25 to October 1 has been shifted by one month. It will now hold between October 25 and 31.

    Its organisers, On and One Events (001) Limited, explained that the postponement was to allow the rain to subside and guarantee a more conducive environment for participants.

    Following an assessment by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA) showing that all indices of flood disaster were manifesting in many states, the Federal Government had warned that flood was imminent and hence the decision to raise the alarm.

    General Manager, 001, Mr. Akinola Oluwaleimu, noted that the warning was timely considering the volume and days of rainfall especially in Lagos of recent. He added that the shift became expedient in the interest of the exhibitors, participants and the thousands of fun-seeking Lagosians who are looking forward to the entertainment and the tourism potentials of the Beer festival.

    “All the stakeholders are in agreement on the need for this shift for better safety, better planning and better result. The festival is an outdoor event and we must take note of the weather and the warning from the experts,” Oluwaleimu said.

    He reiterated that the Lagos State government, which is passionate about tourism, is committed to providing massive institutional support, particularly security, emergency response and related logistics for the event, which will enrol Nigeria into the league of Beer Festivals around the world and boost the country’s tourism opportunities.

    The   event, which promises to propagate responsible drinking among drinking-age (18 years and above) consumers at all its touch points, will be held at the Waterfront Bar Beach grounds, Eko Atlantic to give it a carnival atmosphere.

  • Felabration holds Afrobics audition Friday

    As part of preparation for this year’s edition of Felabration, auditions for the Afrobics dance competition of the festival will hold on Friday September 28, 2018 at the New Afrika Shrine, Ikeja, Lagos.

    Thirty seven dancers will audition for eight spots to compete during this year’s Felabration at a yet to be announced date. The first prize winner gets N250, 000, second prize winner gets N150, 000 and third prize winner gets N50, 000.

    Judges at this event are award-winning dancer/dance instructor Adedayo Liadi aka IJODEE and Segun Adefila, founder of Crown Troupe. Others are Funke Kuti, Femi Kuti’s ex wife and a renowned dancer and Yeni Kuti, founder of Felabration and creator of the Afrobics dance competition, herself a dancer and dance instructor.

    This is the second edition of the Afrobics Dance Competition which was inaugurated in 2017. It was created to popularise the Afrobeat Dance Styles created and internationalised by Fela Anikulapo Kuti. .

  • FEAAN holds shows in Nigeria, South Africa

    The Female Artists Association of Nigeria (FEAAN) is  to hold twin epoch-making exhibitions of diverse media in South Africa and Lagos, Nigeria to commemorate the 58th Independence anniversary.

    Both exhibitions will be opening on the same day in South Africa and Nigeria. With “Nigeria @58: The journey so far”, the South African-leg is held in Partnership with the Consul-General of South Africa, Godwin A. Adama, and the Consulate- General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It will open on Saturday, September 29 and run till Monday, October 1 at 16 Rivonia Road, Ilovo, Johannesburg. It will feature artworks of diverse media 16 women artists from across the country.

    Similarly, with the theme: “Art-mosphere: Celebrating Nigerian Cultural Heritage”, the Lagos-leg featuring 15 artists in FEAAN Southwest Zone, in collaboration with The Roots, will open on Saturday, September 29 and run till Friday, October 5 in Ikoyi. It will feature 45 works of diverse media, including painting, sculpting, textile, photography, and installation.

    At a press conference at the weekend in Abuja, FEAAN National President, Chinze Ojobo, said the exhibitions were meant to showcase rich cultural heritage of the country to the world while projecting the talents of women artists.

    She said: “At this time, our country needs a binder and a healer for the wounds which have for so long, threatened our stability. Undoubtedly, Art is that healer.  Art in Nigeria dates back to at least 500 BC, continuing in this rich tradition, “Nigeria @ 58: The Journey So Far”, FEAAN’s first outing to South Africa, and “Art-mosphere: Celebrating Nigerian Cultural Heritage” by FEAAN Southwest Zone, boast an impressive array of Nigeria’s contemporary art.

    She praised two consulate for their support, saying: “We greatly appreciate the Consul-General and the Nigerian Consulate in South Africa for giving us this platform as part of the celebration of Nigeria’s 58th independence Anniversary.”

    The participating artists in South African exhibition  include FEAAN founding National President, Prof Rita Doris Edumchieke Ubah; Addis Okoli; former FEAAN National President, Akande Ngozi Rosemary; Amarachi Kelechi Odimba; former FEAAN National President, Dr Awoh Stella Mofunanya; Millicent Nkiru  Okocha; and Mayen Madeleine Owodiong.

    Others are Chinyere Ibenye; Igbinovia Omon Sophia; FEAAN P.R.O., Chinyere Odinukwe; Lara Catherine Boglo; Chinze Ojobo; Doofan Kwaghhool; Ella Onyebe; Olumorin Catherine Oluwayemisi and Stanley Chinonso Ezeh (a guest artist)

    The Lagos-leg will feature Nwadejaa Chinma Ngozi; Dr Rita Doris Ubah; Dr Stella Awoh; Hasfat Kabir-Zayyanu; Clara Aden; Omovo Ayoola Oluwaseun; Ejiofor Ogochukwu; Aishati Dirisu; Evelyn Osagie of The Nation; Onyinyen Afam (Zennia); Mrs Patience Anthony Euba; Esther Omowunmi Adebayo; EsuruBelemaIchoku and Funmi Akindejoye.

  • Oyo APC holds parallel congresses

    The two factions of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Oyo State held parallel congresses across the state yesterday. While Governor Biola Ajimobi’s supporters held their congresses at the headquarters of local government councils, the Unity Forum held their  congresses at the secretariats of the party in the council areas.

    The two factions have been flexing muscles since last week over the conduct of ward congresses.

    Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) observed the exercise in different parts of the state.

    The Secretary of Unity Forum, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, praised members of the party who trooped out en mass for the congress. He said they defied attempts by the government to intimidate them from coming out for the exercise.

    Olatunbosun added  “Government officials were all over the place yesterday threatening that policemen and  members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) would be used to disperse party members,  if they assemble for the congress today. But, our members who are delegates were so determined that they turned out in their numbers to vote in the exercise. We have to stop impunity in our party.’’

    A member of the Unity Forum, Prof Adeolu Akande, said the congress went on peacefully, adding that it  confirmed that the group is the soul of APC in the state.

    He added: “Our members were peaceful in their conduct and are determined to ensure that the tenets of democracy as enshrined in the constitution of our party are followed”.

    A party elder, Dr Busari Adebisi, a former Secretary to Government,  had earlier commended members of the Unity Forum for standing against what he called impunity, urging them to brace up for the many tasks ahead of them. He said that is the only way to rescue the party from its present state of comatose.

  • Abia APC holds peaceful ward congress

    Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday held peaceful ward congresses across the 17 local government areas of the state.

    Our reporter who monitored the exercise in Osisioma, Aba North and South local government areas of the state respectively reports that APC faithful came out in their numbers to participate in the exercise.

    Information coming from other parts of the state, including Umuahia North and South, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East and West, Ikwuano and other wards in Bende Local Government Area has it that the exercise was also devoid of any violence and rancour.

     

  • Ex-CBN deputy governor holds summit in Kano

    Former Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kingsley Moghalu highlighted the importance of youth involvement and participation as an important measure in driving economic growth and development in Nigeria.

    Moghalu who is also Founder, Institute of Governance and Economic Transformation, spoke at the Kingsley Moghalu Youth Initiative, under the Isaac Moghalu Foundation, during its inaugural summit in Kano.

    Themed ‘The role of Nigerian Youths in the Quest for Political and Economic Transformation’, the event was held in collaboration with Towards An Intellectual Tomorrow Initiative, a youth group in Nigeria focused on driving youth participation in governance, policy formulation and economic transformation.

    The former CBN chief called on Nigerians to ignore political messiahs and unrealistic promises, emphasising the need for effective and true reform that would produce sustainable development for citizens.

    Speaking at the event, former Indepedent National Electoral Commission (INEC) boss, Prof. Attahiru Jega called for unity among the youths, explaining that it was necessary to organise voters and communities for true and effective change, stating that citizens should demand true and competent leadership.

    Giving the final remarks, Usman Bugaje advised youths in Northern Nigeria to take charge of their lives and educate themselves, especially in the Quran and Arabic Language.

     

  • PIND holds forum on Niger Delta

    The sixth edition of Niger Delta Development Forum (NDDF) 2017 with the theme “The future in our hands: A state-led framework for planning and development in the Niger Delta” holds on November 14.

    It is organised by Foundation for Partnership Initiative in the Niger Delta (PIND) in collaboration with Market Development in the Niger Delta (MADE)

    PIND’s Knowledge Manager, Chichi Nnoham-Onyejekwe, in a statement explained the forum will deliberate on collaboration with state and non-state actors on methodologies for long-term planning and implementation of domestic resource mobilisation and inclusive growth in the region.

    The forum, which enjoys the support of USAID’s Strengthening Advocacy and Civic Engagement (SACE), will offer opportunity for participants to frame and influence the discourse, hold consultations and research.

    Executive Director of PIND, Dr. Dara Akala, according to Nnoham-Onyekekwe, stated recession has given the region an opportunity to look beyond oil.

    The 2017 edition of the yearly three-day God of Mercy programme of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Mountain of Mercy, Erio Ekiti will hold between today and Friday on Erio Mountain, Erio Ekiti, Ekiti State.

    Conveners of the programme, including the newly appointed CAC General Evangelist, Prophet Hezekiah Oladeji and the pastors in charge of CAC Mountain of Mercy, Prophet Sam Olu Alo, Pastors Peter Ilesanmi and Pastor Ola Ojo said it would be yet another fulfilling experience.

    According to them, the programme with the theme: “Mercy Once Again” which will feature morning, afternoon and vigil sessions daily would be greeted with salvation of souls, healing the sick, socio-economic breakthroughs, deliverance from spiritual bondage and oppressions, divine mercy, and blessings among others.

    The clerics said the programme would afford Nigerians, worshippers and the anointed another platform to seek the face of God for divine intervention.

    Anointed gospel singers including Lady Evangelist Bisi Alawiye Aluko, Anointed Glorious Adebayo, Lady Evangelist Yemi Adeola and Lady Evangelist Titilope Aremu Oludare would minister with songs.
