    •Father Adodo launches new book

Traditional Medicine (TM) and Alternative Complementary Medicine (CAM) experts have restated the need for holistic treatment, saying it is the best way to go in healthcare.

According to them, holistic healing touches the whole person –  body, mind, spirit and emotions.

They spoke at the launch of the Director of Pax Herbal Clinic and Research Laboratories, Fr. Anselm Adodo’s new book, entitled: “Integral Community Enterprise in Africa” in Ikeja, Lagos.

According to them, modern medicine has evolved into more discoveries of new drugs and  forms of treatment to cure diseases. These are the conventional methods to give relief and to cure illness that are applied to most people.

However, another kind of treatment has given rise to a more realistic approach to cure illness – the holistic way which is a kind of treatment that would go back to the basic roots of the cause of the illness and the person’s whole being as an important part of this treatment.

Fr Adodo said holistic treatment is an approach rather than a treatment. It treats more the lifestyles of the person and identifies the imbalances which may cause some negative effects to his health,, he said.

“It focuses on the root cause of the disease and the goal is to eliminate the disease by encouraging the person to strive for wholeness and healthy living. The benefits of holistic treatments are: Quicker relief for pain, improvement of over-all general health,  understanding the need for a well-balanced lifestyle, awareness of keeping environment safe and healthy, use of more natural resources- natural herbs and medicines. And the application of more natural methods to cure illness, such as proper nutrition, exercise, detoxification and other natural non-invasive treatments.

“That is why I am advocating that Africa needs a new model of development, is the summary of my book; that is, Communitalism as an Alternative to Capitalism. That is the reason I wrote the book. I was inspired to write the book because of my desire to make a change, no matter how small, in the society,”Fr Adodo said.

He said communitalism is thinking African to solve Africa problems. Seeing community problems through an African eye and proferring solutions that is at home to the indigenes.

“It is a new theory and it is deliberate. It challenges capitalism. It is about researching African problems and bringing about solutions to enterprises, education, health etc, with African eyes based on nature, communities models, and not following eurocentric models that has not worked for us,” Fr Adodo said.

Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Emma Egwu, a member of the House of Representatives, thanked Fr. Adodo for sharing his knowledge and documenting same in a book form. He urged all Nigerians to cultivate a culture of reading and appreciating ideas rather than focusing on materials things.

Former consultant, National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), Prof Joseph Okogun,  described the book as ambitious and revolutionary, adding that it offers refreshing and positive insight into a more integral way of business management, enterprise and community development as well as holistic healing in Africa.

Okugun, a Emeritus professor of chemistry, said through extensive fieldwork spanning 20 years, the author goes beyond mere polemics to demonstrate that there is an alternative to capitalism in Africa, and in the world.

In her remarks, wife of former  Lagos State governor, Dame Abimbola Fashola, praised Fr. Adodo and the management of Paxherbals for charting new frontiers in herbal medicine and touching the lives of many Nigerians.

She urged Fr. Adodo to un relent in his research and vision to transform the society.

Book reviewer of the day, Dr. Reuben Abati, a former Special adviser to president Goodluck Jonathan, described the book as of significant scholarly insight and interest.

He said: ‘’It seems to me that  Adodo’s most compelling argument is that the world needs a new model of development, and that new model may not come from the centre, but from the periphery.  The problem however with that periphery, is that the leaders and the people themselves seem to have bought into the inferiorisation project, into one way of seeing the world, a kind of slave mentality co-optation which violates the people’s identity and pushes them willy-nilly into an identity and self-authentication crisis.

‘’This predominance of an emerging unitarist view of reality robs the world of the advantages of inclusiveness, also of a broad range of useful knowledge.  We live then, in a divided world that is in urgent need of transformation, innovation and a new paradigm of thinking. This transformation would require new modes of doing, of action, of being, of learning and understanding.’’

Other dignitaries at the book launch were The Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Most. Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins; former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof. Maurie Iwu; Director-General, Nigeria Institute of Medical Research, Prof. Babatunde Salako, and President of Nigerian Council of physicians of Natural Medicine, Archbishop Magnus Atilade.

  • Study confirms holistic approach to health: Diet cures, not drugs

A ground breaking study, conducted by a doctor at Seattle Children’s Hospital and published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, has demonstrated, for the first time, that dietary intervention alone can allow complete remission of symptoms in cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

“For decades or longer, medicine has said diet doesn’t matter, that it doesn’t impact disease,” researcher and gastroenterologist, David Suskind, said adding: “Now we know that diet does have an impact, a strong impact. It works, and now there’s evidence.”

IBD is a cluster of related diseases characterised by pathological inflammation of the digestive tract. The two most common forms are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC). The causes of IBD are unknown, but it is believed to arise from an interaction of genetic factors, abnormal composition of the gut microbiome, and immune dysfunction. It is typically treated with steroids or immune-suppressing drugs, both of which can result in lifelong side effects.

Neither treatment addresses the underlying causes of the condition. The new study consisted of an analysis of a small group of pediatric Crohn’s and UC patients at Suskind’s clinic whose parents consented to their treatment solely with an experimental dietary treatment for IBD.

For 12 weeks, participants were placed on a diet called the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD), which is designed as a nutritionally balanced diet based around natural, nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, meat, and nuts, but does not contain any grains, dairy, sugars (except honey) or processed foods. No other treatment was given.

At the end of the study period, eight of the 10 patients were in remission, showing no further IBD symptoms. “This changes the paradigm for how we may choose to treat children with inflammatory bowel disease,” Suskind said.

More studies will be needed before the medical establishment is willing to embrace the SCD as a treatment for IBD. But no further proof is needed for Nicole Kittelson, whose daughter Adelynne was diagnosed with Crohn’s at age eight. At the time, Suskind offered a variety of treatments, and Kittelson opted for the SCD.

“Today, Adelynne has been in clinical remission for more than two years. She’s a healthy, happy and thriving 11-year-old girl. I can’t believe how far we’ve come. When we first walked into Seattle Children’s, she was an 8-year-old girl, who was barely heavier than our 4-year-old. Now, she’s growing and foods are no longer an enemy,” Kittelson said.

According to Kittelson, adjusting to the SCD was hard at first, but following the diet is relatively effortless and automatic. “Her lunch doesn’t look much different than other kids at school. There are so many options out there. We haven’t felt like we’ve had to sacrifice. We’ve even adjusted holiday traditions to fit into our new lifestyle. Instead of candy for special occasions, we swap them for other things,” said Kittelson.

The implications of Suskind’s findings are potentially far reaching. The study is the first to demonstrate clinically that dietary change alone can be a safe and effective method for treating IBD. “Each person’s disease is unique, just as each person is unique. SCD is another tool in our tool belt to help treat these patients. It may not be the best treatment option for everyone, but it is an effective treatment for those who wish to try a dietary therapy,” Suskind said.

If further, placebo-controlled studies back up the effectiveness of the SCD, it may lead to treatments for other chronic inflammatory conditions — which includes most chronic diseases that plague modern civilisation, including cancer and heart disease.

Because foods are more complex than drugs and don’t make profit for drug companies, medical research has been slow to research dietary intervention. Perhaps the new study will help that pattern start to change.

“I don’t have the words to thank Dr. Suskind for what he did for us. To have a doctor that is willing to explore other options and is willing to try new things, it’s incredible,” Kittelson said.

  • Foundation canvasses holistic approach to cancer treatment

To ensure good care of patients, the Cancer Education and Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria (CEAFON) has advocated a multi-disciplinary approach to the disease treatment.

CEAFON president Prof Abayomi Durosinmi-Etti said the rising incidence of cancer calls for a holistic approach to its management and treatment.

Durosinmi-Etti, who was briefing reporters the forth coming 2016 Cancer Summit, said the age-long practice of patients being attended to by a particular doctor is no longer acceptable.

Moreover, the treatment of patients requires multi-faceted expertise.

He said: “We are mobilising the medical experts in the various aspects of cancer management to key into this approach so we can proffer solutions to the disease.”

The don spoke of the need for a National Standard Operating Protocol for cancer treatment to make cancer management easier in the country.

“We are looking at having the same kind of teletherapy radiotherapy machines and techniques for treatment of cancer across all the centres. That way, a patient can walk into any other centre for treatment, if for instance, one breaks down, knowing that he/she will get the same kind of treatment,” he said.

On the summit tagged: “The Fight against Breast cancer in Nigeria”, which will hold between October 5 and 6  in Abuja, the nation’s capital, Prof. Durosinmi-Etti said  breast cancer would be on the front burner again, because of its prevalence.

He said: “Last year it was about breast cancer and this year we are still focusing on it, because it is a major problem, especially for women. Right now, breast cancer is about 26.6 per cent, while cervical cancer is about 23.2 per cent of all cancers we manage in Nigeria. We will also touch the issue of cervical cancer, but breast cancer is really the major focus.”

He added that the summit will also discuss treatment of advanced cancer, given that over 80 per cent of cancer cases in Nigeria today are in the advanced stage.

“We are looking to see how we can increase awareness and educate the public on early detection because we believe that many forms of Cancer are preventable and potentially ‘curable’, if detected on time,” Durosinmi-Etti said.

  • Holistic medicine key to sustainable health

Holistic medicine key to sustainable health

A natural health practitioner, Dr Gilbert Ezengige, has advocated holistic medicine for the treatment of diseases. Holistic medicine identifies (diagnoses) and treats diseases from the roots (causes).

According to Dr Ezengige, this form of medicine allows practitioners to diagnose the major causes of patients’ illnesses because, “that is the best way for treating the problem and preventing future occurrences of diseases. Palliative measures would not take anybody anywhere”.

Besides, this principle impresses on heathcare service providers the responsibility to ensure that all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures carried out on a patient are safe.

“The procedures should not worsen a patient’s health status. If this advice is taken seriously by health care givers, over 80 per cent of iatrogenic (doctor- induced) disorders would not occur.

“The father of modern medicine, Hippocrates says, “If a doctor can’t help, he should be prevented from doing harm”.

Ezengige said holistic medicine embraces the healing power of nature.

Moreover, the duty of health practitioners is to facilitate and augment a well-ordered, intelligent and natural healing process.

“Care givers should facilitate the healing process as they are known to enhance it with their timely intervention. They do not start the healing process because it is inbuilt. The cells in the body follow the inbuilt healing programme as instituted by God and executed by the natural forces.

“Holistic health care providers at best imitate nature’s ways and cooperate with her to dispense healing to the sick,” he said.

Holistic medicine practitioners, he said, make out time to teach their patients healthy lifestyles.

“Some time is devoted to teaching the patient or educating him about his diseases and most especially the role he or she is expected to play towards recovery and indeed good health. The healing approach allows treatment to be directed to the person’s mind, body and soul,” he said.

Other benefits of Holistics healing, according to Dr Ezengige are, “Adequate attention paid by practitioners to his patient’s words, non-verbal heart transmissions (often sensed by conscientious practitioners), gesticulation, demeanor, carriage, voice and tone. Having identified the area of his clients’ life requiring urgent attention, the practitioner consequently incorporates or modifies his treatment plan to cater specifically for those needs.”

He said holistic medicine places emphasis  on prevention rather than cure. “This is because prevention of diseases is cheaper and more noble (very befitting of humanity) than seeking for cure. Methods of disease prevention are among the top priorities for holistic medicine practitioners. If all the sophistication, technological ingenuity and efforts are geared towards the development of modern medicine therapeutics and research pursuits channeled in the direction of preventive medicine, the world would become a better place for all,” Ezengige said.

  • Our approach to education is holistic

Its approach to education is to engender spiritual, rational and emotional intelligence in its students; and this is why every programme of Regenesys Business School is weaved around its motto-‘awakening potential’. The philosophy is to have people discover their innate potentials and consolidate on same to build better leadership.

“We believe that every human being has great potentials that are blocked by our fears. Our role is to block those fears so that people can now achieve their aspirations. Our mission is making the world a better place by developing and becoming better leaders. The problem the world is involved in today is lack of dedication and leadership in management skills; so by developing leaders, we are creating a ripple effect for families, organisations,” said Regenesys Business School Chairperson, Dr Marko Savania during a one day seminar on Effective Strategy; held at Eko Hotel and Suites on Friday last week.

“It’s holistic education  is one of the initiatives of Regenesys,” Savania continued. “We approach education holistically by developing rational, emotional and spiritual intelligence of our students”.

Savania said the seminar  would be a forerunner to several other similar programmes Regenesys would be rolling out especially in facets of business and human resources.

The theme of the seminar, Savania explained, is not only tailored towards Nigeria’s needs alone but stretches globally since organisations now face stiff competitions.

“The initiative is not tailored to Nigeria alone. Globally, competitive strategy is compelling.Companies are competing not only within their immediate locality but across the globe. So there is a clear need to develop a robust strategy that allows you compete and also think globally. It is to expose people to global best practices, to inspire participants to share experiences as well as to learn,“ he added.

Regenesys Country Head, Supo Fawole, noted that the Regenesys, though started in South Africa yet  birthed in Nigeria two years ago, aligning its strategy in two key areas of leadership and management.

According to Fawole, Regenesys offers service in three key areas of academic qualification-post graduate diploma, executive education as well as short skills programme.

The seminar was being replicated all through last week in Mumbai, Johannesburg in South Africa and Nigeria.

“If you look at where Regenesys is located-India, South Africa and Nigeria are three key emerging markets each with a potential to make significant impact in the world. So taking this programme to a different location simply shows there is a lot we can learn from each other. The market is so huge and the challenge of education is so big in Africa generally that the space is big enough for everybody to play,” Fawole said.

At present, Fawole said Regenesys enjoys scholarships from Microsoft to run two of its programmes across 10 African nations. This is in addition to an agreement with global communication outfit MTN’s I-learning platform in which Regenesys provides exclusive and high quality educational content across 14 African countries, among others.

“Participants will go away with impact that gives you confident about the future,” said Savanja on expectation of participants at the seminar. “You can achieve your dreams. Things that were being discussed are things that people have read about but to come together in learning environments like this has tremendous impact on you.”

  • Holistic remedy for HIV/AIDS

Holistic Healthcare is the application of the best combination of natural therapies, in the provision of complementary and wholesome health care services. Natural therapy in this context implies a non-conventional system of preventing or eliminating physical, mental, social or spiritual ailments; which may rely exclusively on past experience and observation handed down from generation to generation, verbally or in writing. It involves the use of natural plants (herbs), animal matter and mineral compounds.

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a complex of diseases and symptoms resulting from unexplained immune deficiency; caused by a retrovirus, culminating in a “mixed-bag” of life-threatening opportunistic infections, which invariably result in death. The retrovirus that causes AIDS is known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) with types I and II already isolated.

During the past few years, a lot of technical and financial supports have been provided for scientists searching for a cure for AIDS. Many of their efforts have been to try and discover a single pharmacological or immunological solution to what is, in fact, a “mixed-bag” of different disease conditions.

Paradoxically, while orthodox researchers have been struggling unsuccessfully to produce a single drug remedy for AIDS, there has been a tremendous advance made by the unorthodox, self-financed but highly ridiculed holistic approach; and it has become clear that the natural defence mechanisms of the individual sufferer can be augmented towards evolving a panacea to the disease problem.

It is against this background of unproductive waste of human, material and financial resources, in the face of the physical, psychological and social hazards imposed on mankind by Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and several other devastating, insidious and otherwise intractable diseases; that I have embarked on this exposition of the “wisdom of ages”, as a private sector contribution to the strategies towards attainment of the much-desired “Health For All” in this millennium.

Over the past 30 years, I have conducted research at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria; as well as at Interdisciplinary Research Centres in Europe and Southern Africa; on holistic and complementary healthcare systems.

In the course of my research activities, it has become glaring that the body’s ability to protect itself from the onslaught of offending virus, bacteria, fungi, cancer cells, etc can be enhanced by holistic herbal ‘immuno-modulators’ , because, apart from supporting the body’s own immune defence mechanisms, they also prevent opportunistic infections.

In Holistic Lifecare, we are committed to total care of HIV/AIDS sufferers when they have just been tested and diagnosed positive, when they are still able to eat, drink and move around on their own, but not when they are expecting their funeral the next day!

The Holistic Natural Remedy being suggested for restoring good health, vitality, and longevity in HIV/AIDS sufferers; is a combination of herbal, nutritional and psycho-social therapies at the appropriate time and in the right proportion. Notable among the useful herbs for HIV/AIDS are Aloe vera, Allium sativum, Harpagophytum zeyheri, Echinacea augustifolia and Zingiber officinale.

  • ‘Holistic medicine best for treatment’

There are different methods of treatment but holistic medicine stands out. This is because it takes a deep look at ailments from the psychological and spiritual aspects, among others to provide a cure. A naturopath, Dr Gilbert Ezengige spoke with WALE ADEPOJU on the subject.

How can diseases be kept atbay? It is by the adoption of holistic medicine for diagnosis and treatment, says a naturopath, Dr Gilbert Ezengige.

Holistic medicine, he said, ensures that health care providers treat patients completely because the human body is not wholly a physical entity like a mechanical device or machine.

He said holistic medicine is becoming popular among health practitioners, adding that it addresses the totality of man’s health.

Describing holistic medicine, he said, it is an assemblage of practices, modalities and techniques that are relevant to an individual’s total health, saying they are physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual.

He said it publicises the teaching that an individual should strive to achieve equilibrium within and establish the necessary harmony between himself and his environment.

Ezengige, who is also an iridologist, said health practitioners who are indifferent to holistic medicine may be opting for irrelevance as the global age advances.

He said: “There are links between our physical organs and our higher faculties. The realities of such links are encountered frequently in our daily conversations and expressions. Statements such as I render my heart-felt apology, I can’t stomach it any longer, he hasn’t got enough liver, his circumstances make him to shoulder a lot of responsibilities, among others are indicative of organs/emotions links and relationship.

“From long time observation, many cultures have come to know that various emotions produce certain disorders in man and these speculations are well founded as science has being investigating and confirming them. It has been ascertained for instance that; an individual who is in the habit of always bottling up his emotional hurts is more likely to experience gastrointestinal discomforts and ulcers; hyper aggressive disposition causes a lot of white blood cells to flood our bloodstreams; uncontrolled anxiety and stress impacts negatively on the cardiovascular system leading to various types of heart ailments; frequent frowning add lots of wrinkles to your face and makes you age faster; constant unexpressed anger promotes gallbladder stone formation, grief and sorrow hastens various types of heart diseases and lowers your immunity significantly.”

Ezengige said there is a positive means of harnessing this emotional thought energy for healing, saying patients are taught to use it by the practitioners.

“The harbouring of fear is one of the negative ways of applying this neutral energy because human organs are harmed by it. The connection between human emotions/mental state and physical organs is fairly appreciated by all practitioners of medicine and health counselors. Disciplines such as psychology, psychotherapy and psychiatry are proofs of such acknowledgment,” he added.

He said holistic medicine discards the view that stamps spiritual or material approach as all that are needed for effective cure.

“A holistic medical practitioner gratefully accepts from creation any system that engenders equilibrium in his patients. The word ‘patient’ used in describing the sick person speaks volume. Patients must exercise patience before the forces of nature awakened through prayers, herbal administration, massage, nutritional therapy, homeopathy, among others will begin to act on them.

“If only patients that change their doctors frequently assimilate the meaning of patient, they would save themselves so much disappointments,” he said.

He said complementary, alternative and traditional medicine advocate the use of natural and non-invasive products and techniques in diagnosis and treatment. “Practitioners in this category who completely imbibe the philosophy of holistic medicine will not delay in referring surgical cases to surgeons for timely intervention. Such a referral do not depress them; instead, it awakens in them the feeling of gratitude to God for permitting and making ways in which health can be restored to the sick.

“In like manner, an allopathic practitioner that has welcomed the principles of holistic medicine will not tenaciously hold on to his patients that are suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, arthritis, among others, to the patients’ detriment. He should encourage such patients to source for alternative health care, especially when there is such desire to visit natural health practitioners,” he added.

The concept of equilibrium maintenance, he said, was fundamental to the practice of holistic medicine. Whenever anything upsets an individual’s state of harmony, balance, equilibrium or homeostasis, that person or his environment suffers, he added.

Holistic medicine practitioners, he said, do not regard germs as the primary culprits in disease conditions that befall people, adding: “Different types of germs have always existed and will continue to exist. Why? Oh, we need some of them to ferment our drinks, decompose our manure in the field for maximum crop yield at harvest time. Some microbes help in synthesizing different types of vitamins in our intestinal tracts. So useful are these microorganisms (harmless and harmful types) that without them the pollution level in the world would have reached an unimaginable level making it impossible for people and their loved ones to breathe fresh air.

Their roles in biodegradation are unequalled.”

Truly some of the microorganisms portend serious health hazards to humans, animals and the plant kingdom, he added.

“However, as long as we do not turn ourselves to heaps of wastes by indulging in unhealthy diets and poising our emotional, mental and spiritual states, all microorganisms; beneficial and non-beneficial, harmful and harmless ones will only be in transit within our bodies. If we adopt wrong lifestyles the strangers in transit become tenants. With further deterioration in health, they begin to lay claim to our bodies thereby becoming land lords.

“The destructive forces in this instance start to gain upper hand over the constructive forces; catabolism over anabolism, disintegration over integration,” he said.

Ezengige said cure starts from within (centre), saying an individual who has lost hope on life or fed up with life, as it is commonly expressed, is a difficult patient to treat.

“Recovery from his illness is made almost impossible by his state of mind. He falls sadly in the category of an incurable patient with a curable disease; the nightmare of any practicing physician.
