  • NAAN urges Nigerians to study in Holland

The Netherlands Alumni Association of Nigeria ( NAAN ) has urged Nigerians to attend the Study in Holland Fair Lagos.

The study fair is scheduled to hold at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

According to Olusesan Olukoya, the National Coordinator of the alumni body in Nigeria, the study in Holland Fair will be a platform for intending students to meet one-on-one with the representatives of institutions of their choices from the Netherlands.

He said the program is a rare opportunity that has been designed for Nigerians seeking international undergraduate, postgraduate and/or professional education courses in the Netherlands to get direct advice on the opportunities available to them for study in the Kingdom of the Netherlands on scholarship and paid courses.

While also encouraging Nigerians seeking admissions to international schools to turn out in large numbers, Olukoya explained that a stand has been apportioned to NAAN where alumni members would be informing the fair participants on studying and living in Holland, on courses to participate in and so on.

He also advised the forum attendees to honour the invitation and be at the venue on time to meet one on one with representatives of several top higher educational institutions from the Holland and get direct advice on the opportunities available to them for study in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

‘Tuition, cost of living low in Holland’

Come Saturday, June 10, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria will host the maiden Study in Holland fair at the Federal Palace Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos. It is designed for Nigerians seeking foreign education in the Netherlands. Fellowship Officer/Consular Affairs, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria, Temitayo Akinbiyi, told ADEGUNLE OLUGBAMILA that the fair will serve as a confluence for prospective Nigerians and representatives of several top higher educational institutions in The Netherland on available opportunities.

What is rationale behind the maiden Education fair in the Netherlands?

The purpose is to create awareness of the Dutch educational system and all the possibilities within it in Nigeria. The fair is also to invite students from Nigeria to consider reputable educational institutions in the Netherlands and establish a lasting relationship between both parties.

A greater percentage of Nigerians have little knowledge of the Dutch educational system, its admission process, knowledge of schools and the undeniable fact that there are numerous English taught courses in The Netherlands. They are not aware of the many opportunities available to international students, of which Nigerians can be a part. Therefore, the fair is a good avenue to learn more about the Dutch educational system, create a good level of awareness and at the same time recruit students.

What stands out The Netherlands education system from other developed economies?

Higher education in The Netherlands has a global reputation for its high quality. This quality is guaranteed through a national system of regulation and quality assurance. The Dutch teaching style is interactive and student-centred. Studying in The Netherlands means developing your own opinion, an open mind and increasing your international orientation. There are also lots of scholarship opportunities.

What does the term ‘internationalising  higher education ‘mean? How can higher education bridge the skills-employability gap that exists among the youth?

Internationalisation of higher education is the approach being adopted by governments to improve and empower higher education in their countries, making it comparable to the best in the world. It is a response to globalisation by ensuring that universities have a curriculum that encompass international and local elements and can produce graduates that can meet the needs of an increasingly international labour market.

Can you give us an instance?

Holland’s many international students come from 190 different countries because the Dutch society is strongly connected to other cultures, the business community and the world. Some of the world’s biggest multinationals, including Philips, Heineken, KLM, Shell, ING and Unilever, are Dutch. The Netherlands is a world leader in many areas of expertise, including agriculture, water management, art & design, logistics and sustainable energy.

Specialised and practical higher education, which meets our national productivity needs is the solution to the skills-employability gap that exists among Nigeria’s youthful population.

How affordable is studying in The Netherlands for an average Nigerian?

Tuition fees are comparatively low and living is comparatively cheap.

How many universities are you expecting from The Netherlands at the fair?

Several Dutch higher educational institutions will be represented at the fair. Amongst these are universities of applied sciences, research universities and institutes for international education.

What are the entry requirements for foreign students seeking university admission in The Netherlands?

First, foreign students need to find a study programme and then check the admission requirements. Application procedures may vary by institution and type of programme. The education institution usually sets a minimum qualification requirement for admission to the programme. In many cases it is essential that foreign students can speak, read and write well in English. They must have passed an English language test, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), are commonly accepted.

What arrangements have you to educate visitors to the fair on visa regulations and local laws in The Netherlands?

The Consular Section of the Embassy will be at the fair to provide detailed information on study visa procedure and regulations, Dutch culture and society, among others.

What experiences await visitors to the fair?

The fair will have in attendance top higher educational institutions from The Netherlands to enlighten students, parents, career  counsellors and other visitors on study programmes, admission requirements, scholarships, curriculum, housing, and costs associated with studying and living in The Netherlands.

  • Holland sack Blind

    Holland sack Blind

Holland have officially fired Coach Danny Blind under 48 hours before their friendly against Italy in Amsterdam.

The final straw proved last night’s 2-0 defeat to Bulgaria in Sofia, which left the Dutch fourth in their World Cup qualifying group.

They already failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and seem very unlikely to make it for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The announcement was made this evening that assistant manager Fred Grim will take over the squad as interim manager for Tuesday night’s friendly against Italy at the Amsterdam Arena.

“We have respect for what Danny meant for us and the team during his tenure,” said KNVB director Jean Paul Decossaux.

“But because the sporting results were so disappointing and made our chances of qualification for the World Cup in Russia very difficult, we feel that unfortunately we have to say goodbye to him.”

Blind had an absolutely disastrous record for the Netherlands, losing five of their nine competitive matches.

He came under fire for the decision to debut 17-year-old Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt against Bulgaria, as the centre-back was at fault for the two goals.

De Ligt was replaced by the more experienced Wesley Hoedt for the second half.

Former international, Mike Obiku, who was a member of the visiting Feyenoord Academy team to the country praised NNPC/Shell for their decision to send two students to the academy.

Omeruo: I’m popular now in Holland

    Nigerian thrilled with astronomical rise

More accolades have not ceased coming the way of the Super Eagles’ defender, Kenneth Omeruo after his scintillating performance for his country’s senior national team which culminated in the victory at the recently held South Africa 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Chelsea of England on loan star to Dutch Club, ADO Den Haag got another recognition over the weekend when he was invited for a special interview by top Dutch football magazine, Voetbal International (VI) and would be published this Wednesday.

Speaking on the length of his popularity since the AFCON success in South Africa, Kenneth Omeruo told SportingLife exclusively that his profile has ranked higher than when he was newly introduced to the Dutch League and that one of his best special moments was when he was called up for an interview by the Dutch top football magazine in Holland, Voetbal International(VI) to grace their page.

“I am more popular now than it used to be in the past. I was told most of the fans of Den Haag supported Nigeria because of me and also watched the Nations Cup matches too for my sake.

“The celebration was awesome when I returned to Holland. I had the reception with the Nigeria’s Ambassador to Holland and on Friday I was invited for an interview by Voetbal International-the best selling sports magazine in Holland.

“The interview will come out on Wednesday. I am happy and grateful to God that all these are happening to me when I am just starting my professional career. I won’t be carried away by it but I will continue to strive harder to excel in my chosen field,” Omeruo disclosed.

Voetbal International which has been publishing since 1965 is the oldest Dutch football magazine that is still running. The magazine is read by approximately 800,000 people every week.

In addition to the regular magazine that comes out every Wednesday, VI every summer publishes season previews before the start of the Dutch league season.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria international was a rock solid in the heart of defence for Den Haag on Sunday in a Dutch Eredivisie Match Day 25 clash against Heracles Almelo after helping his club to another important win.

Den Haag won the match 3-1 and thus maintain their stronghold on their 8th position with 35 points from 25 games and widened the gap between them and 9th placed Heerenveen to 6 points.

The modest club could jump to 7th if they beat AZ Alkmaar on Saturday and NEC Nijmegen, who currently occupying that position with a point better, capitulate away against Heracles Almelo.
