  • 13 Delta pilgrims abscond in Israel

No fewer than 13 pilgrims of the 156 who travelled to Israel on pilgrimage last year absconded, the Delta Commissioner of the Bureau for Special Duties, Mr. Ernest Ogwezzy has said.

Ogwezzy who spoke in Asaba on Monday said that the pilgrims to the Holy Land, made up of 146 people and 10 officials, were sponsored by the state government.

He assured that the government has put in stringent measures to check future occurrence.

He said: “The state government frowns at pilgrims absconding. We will not tolerate it. It is supposed to be for religious obligation. We have put stringent machinery in motion to ensure that pilgrims sponsored by the state government come back.”

For 2015, Ogwezzy disclosed that 200 pilgrims and four officials were sponsored while a total of 104 persons made up of 100 pilgrims and four government officials embarked on the pilgrimage in 2016 at the expenses of the state government.

For Muslims, he noted that in 2015, 107 persons were sponsored by the state government to Saudi Arabia, 88 in 2016 and 75 persons last year.

‘Don’t abscond in the holy land’

Bauchi State Governor Mohammed Abubakar has urged the Christian contingent visiting Rome, Greece and Israel against absconding.

The governor addressed the Christian pilgrims yesterday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House.

He urged them to be ambassadors of the state and shun acts that can tarnish its image, warning that the government will not condone such.

He said: “It will be wrong if you abscond and seek to remain in the holy lands, or relocate elsewhere in search of greener pastures at the expense of tax payers.

“Such an act would not be condoled by this government; we shall not allow such irresponsibility.

“Going to Israel is a journey of spiritual renewal. In this regard, you go not only for yourselves, but as ambassadors of our state. It is our expectation that you will serve as respected citizens of Bauchi State and Nigeria who you represent. Your journey to the holy land is sacred.

“We expect you, therefore, to pray fervently for the restoration of all that is good, development, health of leaders in the state and Nigeria.”

The Chairman, Bauchi State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Daniel Shawulu, hailed the governor for the opportunity given them to embark on pilgrimage to Rome and train workers of the board.

He, however, appealed to the governor to provide the board with a permanent office accommodation in the capital.

  • Deaths in the holy land

Before anything else, Hardball must enter this caveat.  Muslims and their beliefs are inviolate.  This year’s tragedy does nothing to negate the Islamic holy injunctions for the Hajj, for who can afford it, at least once in a life time.  It is one of the five pillars of Islam; and the faith is not about abandoning one of its fundamental pillars because of human negligence.

The kingdom and people of Saudi Arabia no doubt feel blessed to yearly be home to millions of Muslim faithful worldwide.  It is a grave spiritual privilege that must be matched with no less secular responsibility, in pilgrim safety and security.

Mecca, Medina, Mina and allied sacred cities are only among the privileged few, among the globe’s holiest religious destinations, to which pilgrims flock every year.  Even if the whole of the pilgrim population were to perish, that calamity would still not dull these cities’ appeal.  Faith, after all, is a thing of the mind.

Besides, by Islamic belief, dying in Mecca during pilgrimage is religious bliss; for to the deceased would come additional blessings the living cannot boast, as (s)he enters Al-Jannah a privileged soul indeed.  But it was never conceived as being crushed by cranes or being squashed in stampedes.

Which is why the Saudi authorities must take the blame for these twin-tragedies; and must wake up to their responsibilities.

By Allah, Nigeria has paid dearly for these man-made errors, in lost lives and crushed limbs.  From the stampede, no fewer than 56 Nigerians — and still counting — out of a casualty figure of 769 so far have perished, many of them the cream of their generation.

The morbid list: Justice Abdulkadir Jega, presiding judge, Court of Appeal, Abuja, and brother to Prof. Attahiru Jega, former INEC chairman, Justice Musa Hassan Alkali, another Court of Appeal judge, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim, the Panti Zing (traditional ruler of Zing, in Adamawa State) and Amirul Hajj (leader) of the Adamawa delegation, with two of his four wives, Prof. Tijani Abubakar El-Miskin, the famed Islamic scholar, Hajiya Bilikisu Yusuf, former editor of defunct Citizen magazine.  And to think of the fate of Alhaji Bello Gidan-Hamma, former caretaker chairman of Illela Local Government of Sokoto State, with himself, mother, stepmother and two wives perishing in the stampede!

Pray, how can a nation lose such calibre of people, on a pilgrimage, just because the host country is remiss in its safety responsibility?

To worsen matters, a Saudi prince’s convoy is claimed to have caused the stampede; with another Saudi prince reportedly making a racist statement, blaming the dead for their own death!  That is reprehensible and should not be tolerated.

Which is why Nigeria must lodge the sternest of protests to the Saudi government.  Nigeria cannot stop its Muslims from Hajj.  But it certainly can expect the Saudi government to appreciate the enormous responsibilities in pilgrims’ safety.

We can’t just sit back and mop in agony, while our compatriots die avoidable deaths because they are on pilgrimage — and let no one mouth any pious fatalism about Allah wanting it that way!

Allah’s will is one thing.  Human negligence is another.  This is why the Saudis must sit up.  Enough of these harvests of needless deaths!

Nigerian pilgrims warned against illegal movement in Saudi Arabia

Nigerians on Holy pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, particularly women have been warned against illegal movement in Madina and Makkah.

Chairman of the Preachers Team from Kaduna State, Malam Mukaddas Zaria gave the warning in Madina while addressing pilgrims on their conduct in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night.

He said, report reaching officials had it that pilgrims, particularly female allow strange men, most of whom are illegal residents of Saudi to lead them around the two cities.

According to him; “in the name of going to install gold or silver plated teeth, some of our pilgrims follow strange men around. And when they get their unlawful men touch their bodies in the process of putting the golden teeth for them.

“Besides, installation of gold or silver plated teeth is mostly done to show people at home that you have gone for Hajj. Is it not better for you to perform Hajj without showing off? He queried.

He however advised that, henceforth, any female pilgrim who desires installation of gold or silver plated teeth should look for her state official guide, particularly those who understand Arabic Language to accompany her to the dental clinic.

“If you go on such journey alone, and you allow yourself to be molested by bad elements, you are as good as someone who deliberately commits sin in the Holy Land, those whom the Prophet had cursed. May Allah guide us against such,” he prayed.

He however urged the pilgrims in general to maximise their opportunity of being in the Holy Land by praising God and asking for forgiveness at all times.

According to him, pilgrims are not in the Holy Land for tourism; therefore, they must take advantage of their presence in Saudi Arabia to pray at the Prophet Mosque in Madina and Holy Kaaba in Makkah.

“The Prophet, may the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him, said whoever observes 40 prayers in his Mosque in Madina, he will ask for forgiveness for the person on the day of judgment,” Mukadas stressed.
