Buhari, Osinbajo’s leadership style worthy of emulation – Obasa

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has urged leaders around the world, politicians especially, to emulate the exemplary leadership style of President Muhammdu Buhari and Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

Obasa in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Political and Legislative Matters, Hon. Mufutau Egberongbe commended President Buhari for handing over the baton to Prof. Osinbajo when he was leaving for London for his vacation.

According to him, the President has done the expected and necessary thing by handing over to Osinbajo, “and since the president has left for his vacation, activities in the country have not been put on hold, in just one week, Osinbajo visited Rivers state two times despite being an opposition state.

“The Acting President didn’t just visit the state, while there he flagged-off the reconstruction of doctors’ quarters in Port Harcourt and also inspected the ongoing construction of the Rivers state Ecumenical Centre.

“And just last week, he paid an unscheduled visit to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the state of some of the facilities within the airport, and noted that there was need to urgently make the facilities function at optimal level.

“Few days after this visit to the airport, the Federal Government sacked all the nine directors of the nine directorates in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). This shows that we have a Vice President who is not docile; in other climes, the Vice President would have to wait for the President to return before taking action,” Obasa said in the statement.

The Speaker further explained that the attributes displayed so far by Osinbajo has given President Buhari the confidence to attend to his health, adding that he (Osinbajo) has shown that he is capable and can deliver in the absence of his principal.

Obasa maintained that Osinbajo has served as a Commissioner for Justice under the tutelage of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his contributions to the state judiciary and legal system cannot be over-emphasized.

“He has been in the thick of the action since Buhari left the shores of the country to proceed on vacation and a routine medical check-up in the United Kingdom. Leaders must emulate this leadership style of Buhari and Osinbajo,” Obasa added.

Traders protest planned demolition of Ojodu retail market

Scores of market women and men on Tuesday stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly to protest alleged plan by the state government to demolish Ojodu retail Market.
The distraught marketers chanted several solidarity songs and passionately appealed to the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa to use his office to help them stop the state government from implementing the policy.
The leader of the protesters and Treasurer of the  Market Men and Women, Ojodu Retail Market Branch, Alhaja Fadeke Bello disclosed that the marketers were surprised when some officials of the state government gave them only one day notice for the demolition.
Bello said in an interview that she stood in for the Iyaloja of the market, Alhaja A.A Adegbola, who she said went for a weekly meeting of the Iyalojas in the state.
“We are here on behalf of the people of Ojodu Retail market. We heard that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode ordered the demolition of parts of the market, which we did not agree to because the notice was short.
“They called us for an emergency meeting yesterday that they were coming today to demolish the market and we told them that we could not accept that because of the short notice.
“This was why we decided to come and inform the Governor, Speaker of the Assembly and our Iyaloja General, Alhaja Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.
“We are going to her office to see her now. They told us they would only demolish part of the market, but we don’t know what they would do. They gave us a short notice,” she said.
The woman revealed that the market belongs to Ikeja Local Government and that it was established 32 years ago by the Marketing Board.
She stated that they were later told that there were issues with the owners of the land while appealing to the government not to send them away from the market.
According to her, Ambode is trying his best for the beautification of Ojodu Local Government, adding that they also want to enjoy the gesture of the government.
“The Governor should not send us away from where we earn our daily bread. We depend on the market for survival. We don’t know their plans for the market, but we want them to help us,” she stated.
Addressing the protesters later, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa urged them to be peaceful with their protests, promising to get across to the executive on the matter and report to the leaders of the protesters in due course.

Recession: ‘Leaders must rise above personal interests, differences’

    • Says fairness, equity, obedience to rule of law key to good governance
    • Urges South west governors to scale up Odu’a Investment Initiative

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday said that Nigeria’s present economic situation urgently requires its elected leaders to rise above their personal differences and interests with a common unity of purpose and deliver good governance to the people who they represent.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at the opening ceremony of the maiden edition of the Executive/Legislative Retreat held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, said the recession taking its toll on Nigerians is a wakeup call for Nigeria leaders to come together for the purpose of rescuing the nation.

Harping on the central theme of the retreat, “Good Governance in a Recession,” Governor Ambode said the economic downturn was no respecter of tribe or religion, neither does it discriminate along political party lines, hence, every Nigerian was feeling the impact.

He said the retreat, which had brought together members of the Executive and the Legislature from the State and Federal level from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), was a statement of fact that the people come first in Lagos.

The Governor said, “Our people demand, and request from us, good governance, leadership and hope at a critical time like this in our nation. We must therefore rise above our personal differences and interests, with a common unity of purpose; staying focused on our promises and manifesto at all times.

“If our economy must grow, it must also have the mindset and culture to want to grow. It is therefore left for all of us to learn to emphasize the people and de-emphasize the power to get good results. Getting good results requires that we abide by the principles of good governance; whether we are in or out of any economic recession. It is very clear, and I also make bold to say that our concern is, and should be, about our people, Lagosians and Nigerians in general.

“One common feature of most of us gathered here today is the social contract we have with our people; having elected us to serve them. The Executive-Legislative collaboration is strongly required and desirous in order for us to deliver and create dividends of democracy.”

Governor Ambode who also dwelt on the need to entrench good governance, listed fairness, equity and obedience to Rule of Law and inclusion as key ingredients, adding that the last 16 months of his administration has focused on these principles.

“Allowing everyone to participate to reach consensus is good governance. There must be direction as to where our government is going. Strategic vision, performance, responsiveness in getting the needed results in the most cost-reduced efforts possible is good governance,” he said.

Besides, Governor Ambode also stressed that there was no better for the six States in the South West region under the Odu’a Investments Group to activate the partnership for economic growth.

“As you may recall, Lagos joined the Odu’a Investments Group last year to become the Sixth State in the South West with Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo State as founders. This historic move is not only Strategic, but deeply falls in line with our vision of reawakening the political economy and socio-economic hegemony of member States.

“As we proceed to extract the greater opportunities of inclusion, it is, of necessity to call on other State Governments, irrespective of our political leanings that the Odu’a Investment initiative is a veritable economic vehicle for us to take our people out of recession,” the Governor said.

In his goodwill message, Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa commended Governor Ambode for the retreat and his purposeful leadership, saying that it was a good thing that the State is championing a platform for elected and appointed officials to deliberate on matters of paramount interest to the people.

He said for good governance to be feasible in an economic recession, sound anti-corruption policies devoid of mere speeches and lip service must be put in place, as well as cordial relationship between executive, legislature and judiciary.

According to the Speaker, all arms of government must be up and doing on their duties, focusing more on governance that is accountable, transparent, responsive, equitable and all inclusive.

On his part, Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Mr. Gbenga Ashafa, commended the Governor for how he has been handling affairs of the State, especially the issue of kidnapping, saying that Lagos remains the only State that usually respond swiftly to such issues with the Governor leading the security operatives from the front.

Ashafa also commended the Governor for the retreat, saying that such platform should be organised periodically to foster cohesion and unity of purpose among elected and appointed representatives of the people.

In the same vein, Senator representing Lagos West at the Senate, Hon. Adeola Olamilekan Solomon, said the retreat was a confirmation of unity among people’s representatives, which according to him, was important for development.

The retreat also had in attendance members of the State Executive Council, party chieftains including Chairman of the APC in Lagos, Otunba Henry Ajomale, his Vice, Cardinal James Odunbaku, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, former Deputy Governor of Lagos, prince Abiodun Ogunleye, among others.

Obasa stated further that there is the need for corporate investors to collaborate with the parliament, which is saddled with the task of providing the laws for creating conducive environment for investors to operate.

Boat mishap: Lagos speaker blames transport ministry, LASWA

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has pointed out that lack of effective regulations from the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the state ministry of transportation were responsible for incessant boat accidents on the state waterways, saying henceforth they will be held responsible for any accident.

Obasa made the observation yesterday at plenary after members had taken comments from the State commissioner for Transportation, Dayo Mobereola and Managing Director of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Abisola Kamson during plenary.

The House had last week summoned the Commissioner and the MD LASWA over re-occurrence of boat accidents that have claimed several lives in the state.

The speaker who conspicuously expressed displeasure over the responses of the duo when they quizzed at plenary, stated that “as we speak, you have no regulations. You have not been able to do the necessary regulation to monitor the activities of the operators and you have been operating without a board.

“How many times have you taken time to be on the waterways? What is your staff strength? What is the local government doing about this? It shows in fact that you are not in existence,” Obasa said.

He however, said that a stakeholders meeting with all the relevant agencies, would be called to address the issue holistically. Earlier in her reaction to questions posed by the lawmakers, LASWA MD said that some of the challenges the Authority has been facing included a judgement that was delivered against LASWA, adding that Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has been leveraging on the judgement.

Kamson explained that some of the causes of the tragedies recorded on the waterways were as a result of over speeding by operators, vessels not fitted with the required technology like speedometer and running into fallen logs along the waterways among others.

She added that, “what we are now doing is to work in collaboration with marine police and operators to adhere to safety regulations.”

She disclosed that over 2 million passengers ply the Lagos waterways on monthly basis, adding that all the 26 jetties on the waterways are being manned by water guards who would be responsible for ensuring regulation.

In his comments, the commissioner for Transportation, Mobereola said since the incident occurred there had been stakeholders meeting where LASWA, NIWA, Marine police and Lagos State Safety Corps were in attendance.

He added that the state government has been doing “everything humanly possible to avert such accident in future. Water transportation is one of the cardinal programmes of the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode and would also do things in accordance with that regards.”
