  • Lawmaker builds ICT, skill acquisition centre for constituents

The lawmaker representing Ikpoba-Okha/Egor in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ehiozuwa Agbonyinma, has inaugurated a skill acquisition centre and an Information and Communication Technology centre for the people of Egor Local Government Area.

Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon Philip Shaibu, who inaugurated the projects said some lawmakers would rather line their pockets instead attracting projects that will enhance the well-being of members of their constituencies.

Shaibu said the projects were in line with the vision of the Edo State government to build skilled work force.

He said the 200,000 jobs promised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) under Governor Godwin Obaseki were to be achieved by providing skills for youths and not through the civil service.

He said: “We are creating job opportunities for our youths. It is only when labour are skilled that they can become self-employed. We are driving an economy that is private-sector driven.

“The only way is when we have skilled man power. People trained here will be employers of labour. This project is in line with our vision. We urged other lawmakers to build same for their constituencies.”

Agbonyinma said he has attracted projects that his constituents are happy about.

He assured that he would reclaim his mandate at the tribunal because those that rigged him out have been charged to court.

His words: “In the last election, they voted for me. Whatever happened, the end will justify the means. We are at the tribunal. The mandate stolen by some people will be retrieved.

It is not only physical infrastructure I attracted; I have bills and motions I sponsored that helped to move the country forward. The bills helped to return stolen money back to the country.

“I sponsored the Money Laundering Bill, the NNPC Motion on crude oil that left the shores of the country. Nigeria’s undeclared crude oil was taken to 41 countries. $18 billion worth of crude oil was taken to the United States. I went to the US Customs and they provided comprehensive details of what came to their country through the back door.

“The issue of gas flaring and payment to host communities by the Federal Government was also achieved. I moved the motion for oil leakages. Is it Abacha loot? The PENCOM probe I investigated uncovered missing $33billion. “

  • Lawmaker: why I’m empowering my people in Etsako

No fewer than 800 residents of Etsako East, Etsako West and c local government areas have benefited from an empowerment programme organised by the lawmaker representing the areas at the House of Representatives, Hon. Johnson Oghuma. The event held on Saturday. The beneficiaries were trained in fishery, tailoring, welding, solar power repairs and installation, cosmetology, CCTV installation and repairs as well as aluminium fabrication. Petty traders also received N10, 000 each to boost their businesses.

Items given out to the constituents were mobile fish ponds, sewing machines, motorcycles and welding machines, among others.

Oghuma was elected to the House of Representatives in 2017 after Hon. Philip Shaibu was elected Deputy Governor of Edo State. He won re-election to the National Assembly in last year’s general election. Oghuma said he resisted pressure to provide the empowerment packages before the general elections because he didn’t want the electorate to misconstrue the gesture as inducement for the people’s votes.

He told reporters that he planned the empowerment package to be different from what the people were used to by training the beneficiaries in various aspects of available skills before providing them with the appropriate tools.

Hon. Oghuma, who promised to support them with cash grants to kick-start their trades said he has attracted many capital projects to the three local government areas.

His words: “My purpose in life as well as in politics, is to provide opportunities for my people; giving hope to the hopeless. My people just re-elected me and I will do more for them. As you can see, I made sure they were trained so that they would value what was given to them.

“Those that have been trained on fishery will get the empowerment items as well as 500 fingerlings and a token to start up their businesses. The same will go for others that we have trained.

“Similarly, about 200 market women will get N10, 000 each to boost their businesses, while 160 farmers will get sprayers and other items to improve their yields.”

Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Estako West Local Government Area, Alhaji Abubakar Akokhia, hailed the lawmaker for achieving so much within two years in office, even as he cautioned the beneficiaries against selling the tools given to them.

He said: “We believe Oghuma will do more in his second term. Those that did not get anything now will get something in the next empowerment phase.”

Some of the beneficiaries said it was the first time they would benefit from such programme in their constituency.

  • Edo monarchs at war over land

There is a looming war between Uzairue and Auchi communities in Estako West local government area over alleged unprintable words used by the Otaru of Auchi, HRH Aliru Momoh, Ikelebe III on the state Deputy Governor, Hon Philip Shaibu.

The lingering crisis between both communities was said to be over a parcel of land on which the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) installed its sub-station.

It was gathered that the TCN sub-stations could not be installed for over three years following ownership of the disputed land between‎ both communities until the intervention of the State Government.

The Otaru of Auchi was said to have worked out on Hon Shaibu after using unsavoury utterances when he was at Auchi to represent Governor Godwin Obaseki to mark the Muslims celebration of Sallah last Friday.

Peeved by the abuse of one its prominent subjects, the Ogieneni of Uzairue, HRH Kadiri Imonikhe Omogbai IV, in a statement he personally signed warned that “the Uzairue will resist any attempt from the palace of the Otaru to rubbish, embarrass, hurt or tarnish the image of Shaibu”.

The Ogieneni stated that the utterances of the Otaru of Auchi was aimed at embarrassing Shaibu.

He said the friendly and accommodating nature must not be taken for granted by the Otaru of Auchi.

The Ogieneni of Uzairue insisted that the land on which the TCN sub-station is cited belongs to the Uzairue saying it was unthinkable for any community, not even Auchi Kingdom to lay claim to the said land.

He said the community released it because the State Government needed it for the good of the Etsako and the Afemai people in general.

According to him, “In as much as we are very ready to live in peace with our neighbours, the Uzairue are not ready to yield an inch of their God-given land to any community not even Auchi.

“We want to call on the state government and relevant security agencies to check the excesses of the Otaru of Auchi and his unguarded and overzealous palace Chiefs to avert the breakdown of law and order in the local government”.

‎In his reaction, the Otaru of Auchi, Aliru Momoh, Ikelebe III, said the Ogieneni “has right to do what he should do.

“That right is given to man by God. I won’t join issues with him. I want to wait to see what Government will do”.

The Otaru added that he has great love for his community and does not want any ‎of his subjects to die over land.

“Government has the duty and responsibility to investigate. Government cannot judge without looking at the evidence. If Government does that that would be injustice,” the Otaru said.
