Honda CEO Ito to step down

Honda Motor Co Chief Executive Takanobu Ito will step down in late June after six years in the top post and be succeeded by Managing Officer Takahiro Hachigo, a low-profile engineer with global experience, the company said in a surprise announcement.

Japan’s No.3 auto maker has hit a rough patch over the past year with quality problems that have led to multiple recalls of its popular Fit hybrid subcompact, which Ito conceded earlier this month could have been caused at least in part by an aggressive sales target.

Such self-inflicted setbacks had been compounded by multimillion-vehicle recalls to replace air bag inflators made by top supplier Takata Corp that have so far been linked to six deaths, all in Honda cars.

For the past three years, Ito, 61, a feisty former supercar engineer, has shaken up Honda’s decades-old, tightly-knit supply chain as the auto maker sought to trim costs and find more cutting-edge technologies. That has predictably rankled local suppliers, and some retired Honda executives manoeuvred to have Ito removed, sources have told Reuters.

“I think this move is an attempt by Honda to tread a different course, with someone who upholds harmony,” said Takaki Nakanishi, a veteran auto analyst and CEO of Nakanishi Research Institute.

A former senior Honda official said he was surprised by the announcement. Hachigo had been widely expected to join Honda’s board, but “like many inside Honda, I’d thought Ito was ready to continue as CEO at least for another term.”

The former official said he thought Ito’s resignation was his own decision.

Hachigo, who worked on the popular U.S. Odyssey minivan and CR-V crossover, would skip several ranks to become CEO after Honda’s annual shareholders’ meeting in late June. He joined the company in 1982 with a career spanning several countries including the United States, Britain and China. He is currently Vice President of Honda’s R&D arm in China.

Ito, 61, became CEO in 2009 as the auto industry was licking its wounds from a crushing global financial crisis.

The ensuing years were no easier, as a disappointing launch of the Civic model caused many to question whether Honda had lost its edge. Natural disasters in Japan and Thailand also hit production and profits hard.

  • Ali tops Honda poll as ‘most unbeatable sporting star’

Ali tops Honda poll as ‘most unbeatable sporting star’

THE 1966 World Cup win over Germany is still considered the greatest British sporting triumph in history according to a poll released Monday.

The victory, which took place a staggering 48 years ago, came out ahead of Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win last year, the first for a British player since 1936, while Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean’s Bolero in the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics which saw them take gold, made it into third position.

The Survey, commissioned by Honda to celebrate some of the world’s unbeatable champions ahead of this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, asked over 2,000 UK respondents what they considered to be the best British sporting triumphs of all time.

The survey also asked people to vote for the ultimate unbeatable male and female sporting stars of our time, with Muhammad Ali and Martina Navratilova, former World No. 1 Tennis player, taking pole position.

In the men’s category, 37 per cent of those surveyed believed that Ali, former undisputed heavyweight champion, was the official number one most unbeatable male sport star. Usain Bolt, the fastest man on earth, came in at second place with 20 per cent of the vote, while Pelé, previously named World Player of the Century in 1999 by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics, was placed in third position.

Among the top ten male stars also recognised in the poll, were Sir Steve Redgrave, former British rower and five times Olympic gold medallist, Ayrton Senna, triple World Champion Formula 1  racing driver, Mo Farah, Great Britain’s double Olympic gold medallist, and George Best, professional footballer.

Martina Navratilova topped the list as the ultimate unbeatable female sporting star with forty three percent of respondents placing her in the number one slot. Navratilova was world No. 1 for a total of 332 weeks in singles, and a record 237 weeks in doubles, making her the only player in history to have held the top spot in both categories for over 200 weeks. Jessica Ennis-Hill followed in second place, with 14 per cent of the vote, for her performance at the London 2012 Olympic Games, whilst Serena Williams, No. 1 ranked American professional tennis player, came in third in the women’s category.

Jane Torvill, British Olympic winning ice dancer just missed the top three spot being placed fourth, closely followed by Olga Korbut, Belarusian gymnast. Steffi Graff, former World No. 1 German tennis player, Dame Ellen MacArthur, and Dame Kelly Holmes were also among the coveted stars the British public considered to be the top ten unbeatable female sports stars of our time.

Honda net profit doubles to $1.56 billion in Q3

Honda said over the weekend its net profit doubled to $1.56 billion in the three months to December, thanks to brisk global sales and a weaker yen.

Net profit for October-December rose to 160.7 billion yen ($1.56 billion), while revenue rose 24.5 percent to 3.02 trillion yen in the quarter.

The results were “mainly due to a rise in automobile and motorcycle net sales as well as the positive impact of foreign exchange effects,” the company said.

A sharp decline in the yen this financial year has boosted profitability at major Japanese exporters including Honda rivals Toyota and Nissan.

For the nine months to December, Japan’s third-largest automaker logged 403.60 billion yen in net profit, up nearly 40 percent from the same period the previous year.

Revenue for the three quarters rose 23%, with its sales in North America up 30% year-on-year thanks to healthy sales of four-wheeled vehicles, it said.

Honda also enjoyed good sales in the motorbike business in Asia, where net profit was up more than 50% from a year ago.

  • Honda targets 10,000 unit sales in 2020

Honda targets 10,000 unit sales in 2020

Honda Motor Company (HMC) has set a target of 10,000 units sales in Nigeria by 2020.

Managing Director, Honda Automobile Western Africa Limited (HAWA), Mr Takayuki Yamashita, said this during HMC partnership with The Honda Place (THP) Limited – a division of Stallion Group.

Honda, it would be recalled, recently launched improved versions of the Civic, Accord and CR-V. Other impressive Honda range includes Pilot, Odyssey, Crosstour and City.

At a media parley to announce the establishment of its subsidiary HAWA in partnership with THP, Honda Chief Operating Officer for Regional Operations (Europe, the Middle and Near East and Africa), Mr Manabu Nishimae, pledged that HMC will strengthen its presence in Nigeria.

At the the event were representatives from the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria and representatives from Honda Japan.

Nishimae said the establishment of Honda’s liaison office in Nigeria was a strategy to develop and enhance Honda’s business in Nigeria, the most populous country in the region where continuous growth is envisaged.

Yamashita told motoring correspondents that HAWA would oversee marketing support initiatives as well as sustainable business development and customers’ satisfaction, while THP takes charge of sales and service operations.

He emphasised that the basic idea behind the move was to “connect the market with Honda’s global resources and accelerate the expansion of our business in Nigeria.”

Reiterating Honda’s commitment to deliver “Three Joys,” Yamashita elaborated further saying “there is “Joy of Buying” for customers first, dealer’s “Joy of Selling”, and Honda’s “Joy of Creating” should follow. Together with our partner THP Limited, we will put customer’s “Joy of Buying” first, no matter what, and no matter when”.

Yamashita said Honda would fully support THP, taking advantage of Honda experience of 50 years all over the world, selling automobiles.

Also announcing his intentions to prioritise after sales services for Honda products in the country, Yamashita said the company would ensure continuous satisfaction of the existing and future customers throughout the ownership.

He, however, commended THP for investing in a new facility in Lekki area that would enhance sales and aftersales operations.

  • Honda unveils new motorcycle

    Honda unveils new motorcycle

Honda Manufacturing (Nigeria) Limited has launched a new motorcycle – Dream 110.

This is in continuation of the company’s determination to take over the two wheelers’ market largely dominated by Chinese manufacturer and Bajaj Boxer from Indian. Bajaj’s Boxer has a very strong brand name and it commands brand premium over Chinese model in Nigeria. Both Chinese and Indian manufacturer will now have tough fight from Honda, the Japanese auto giant.

The presentation of Dream 110, held at the Ota, Ogun State office of the company, was witnessed by the company’s top officials, clientele, private and commercial motorcyclists.

The country Managing Director, Osamu Ishikawa described the new motorcycle as the best for Nigerian market.

Ishikawa said the vision behind the new Dream 110 motorcycle included excellence and user -friendliness.

Honda, he said, has intensified efforts, both high quality and affordable products.

“Our study has shown that the demand for personal user of motorcycle is increasing. The best motorcycle must also be affordable, economical and durable to withstand high terrain considering Nigerian road condition,” he said.

He boasted that the new bike is elegant, comfortable and fuel efficient.

Narrating the features of the new bike, Honda’s Sales Manager, Amos Ogoigbe, said the motorcycle, has 110 CC-engine and developed as a part of the strategy of low price, models for newly emerging markets with focus on ease of handling, fuel efficiency, elegance and durability while leveraging Honda’s global network to increase cost competitiveness.

He said there is demand for more private motorcycles due to increase in the nation’s GDP yearly, hence the introduction of new product.

Honda Dream 110, Ogoigbe said, is 20 percent better than Chinese models.

“It is designed to take care of customers’ desire to have the best brand; security and safety are embedded. It has a shield that protects leg and feet from the muddy splash. It is the best personal motorcycle for lovers of two wheelers,” Ishikawa interjected.

Honda has set 10,000 units sales target for the segment.

The Managing Director admitted that the restriction of motorcycles in some parts of Lagos by the state government affected their sale last year but the company has devised means to address the situation.

He, however, said Honda Nigeria is not introducing the 200CC-engine recommended by the state government anytime soon.

“We are still studying the situation to understand its market viability. We have embark on producing products that are affordable compare to our competitors; it will be unwise for us to delve into 200CC-engine segment which will automatically catapulted the price into a thing that will be difficult for average users of the bike to purchase,” Ishikawa said.

  • Honda Civic: sleek, energetic

    Honda Civic: sleek, energetic

The previous generation Civic has always performed well in the driver power survey and, as lots of technology has been carried over straight from the old car, it is expected that the new 9th generation car would do just well as its predecessor, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

The Honda Place Nigeria has joined the rest of the world to unveil the ninth-generation Honda Civic that was recently face-lifted to incorporate upscale features such as sleek, energetic and aerodynamic design with a new ECON button that adjusts throttle response and air conditioning to improve fuel economy.

In a chat with motoring journalists in Lagos, The Honda Place Head of sales and marketing, Mr Deepak Daryanani, said the previous-generation Honda Civic had a revolutionary look, but Honda has chosen evolution for this latest model.

The Civic, according to him is also smoother and sleeker in shape with curvy wheel-arches and longer front and rear overhangs.

This is in addition to the LED lights that run across the front and are standard across the range.

The tail of the Civic, however, retains the split screen of its predecessor with the lights incorporated into the split, but a windscreen wiper has been added.

On the inside, the cabin material and switchgear has been improved while the digital dashboard is simplified so that it’s easier to read.

Available in two –trim levels, LX and EX, the entry level LX comes equipped with automatic air-con, USB connectivity and 16-inch alloy wheels while the EX adds luxuries like cruise control, front fog lights, dual-zone climate control and Bluetooth and panoramic sunroof.

A mock test drive after the product familiarization meeting reveals that the new Honda Civic strikes a good balance between fun and comfort – courtesy of the new smooth electric power steering system and fluid-filled rear suspension bushes, which soaks up bumps convincingly.

Coupled with this are the slippery aerodynamics that helps resist wind noise, so it is pretty quiet on the motorway.

The previous generation Civic has always performed well in the driver power survey and, as lots of technology has been carried over straight from the old car, it is expected that the new car would do just well as its predecessor.

As for safety, Daryanani said Civic has a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating, adding that every Civic comes fitted with a full complement of airbags, as well as LED daytime running lights, ESP and ABS as standard. The EX model gets adaptive cruise control and a Collision Mitigation Braking System, which uses radar to detect imminent collisions at low speeds.

Daryanani said only the 140bhp 1.8-litre petrol engine with a five-speed automatic transmission system will be available in the local market.

Talking practicality, there’s plenty of room for adults in the back – thanks to the car’s generous dimension of 4,300mm long, 2,065mm wide and 1,590mm tall.

“The clever rear bench ‘Magic Seat’ is also still there; this means that you can fold the seats flat when you want to carry longer items, or flip the seats up cinema-style when you want to transport taller loads,” Daryanani said.

Daryanani said: “The Civic has always been cheap to run, and this latest version is no different. All of the engines are economical. You can get the 1.8 litre to post 28/29kmpg and emit 137g/km. And with strong residual values across the range, you’ll get a lot of your money back come resale time.”

  • Honda begins free Check-up

The Honda Place (THP) has commenced free check-up camp for customers with old and new Honda models at three locations.

They include Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt.

The company’s Head of sales and marketing, Mr. Deepak Daryanani said the check-up camp will offer a comprehensive 40-point check-up and a thorough examination of the engine, suspension, transmission, electrical system, under-body, AC, exterior among others.

Daryanani added that the check-up camp would also avail participants’ series of discounts on products and services.

He listed some of these offers as special discounts on old models; parts and labour charges, full body spray and up to 50 percent discount on wheel alignment and balancing.

Other incentives are 25 percent discount on parts for models earlier than 2005 though excluding service parts and 15 percent discount on parts for 2006 – 2008 Honda model years.

He said the objective of the campaign is to provide the best of products and services while also availing customers an unprecedented value-added experience.

“The services are designed to help customers rediscover the value of their cars and appreciate the commitment of the dealership to the brand,” he said.

Customers, Daryanani said, would be trained on fundamental ways to maintain their vehicles and keep them in top shape to avoid needless breakdowns.

“The training will include regular and routine inspection of car, tips on managing emergency situations as well as driving tips and safety features,” Mr. Daryanani added.
