  • Honeywell tasks youths on entrepreneurship development

Honeywell Flour Mills Plc has urged youths to sharpen their entrepreneurship skills with a view to be self-dependent with less emphasis on pursuing non-existing white collar jobs.

Senior Brand Manager, Mr Lanre Da-Silva, who stated this in Ado Ekiti during the Honeywell-sponsored second Trade Fair for Public Primary Schools in Ekiti said the company partnered the Ekiti State Government on entrepreneurship development at the primary level of education to combat the geometric increase in the level of unemployment in the country.

Besides, he said the objective of the fair was in tandem with the philosophy of Honeywell which believes in introducing the children to entrepreneurship development to make them self-sufficient when they grow up.

He, however charged the parents to be conscious of the natural potentials in their children, saying such natural knack must be nurtured to maturity for them to have sustainable and prosperous future.

Da-Silva, who said his company was glad to partner with Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to boost early education in Ekiti, said “there is no human being without potential or natural endowment. You don’t have to be Professors before you become great in life. With minimal education and good skills, you can rise to any level”, he said.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Prof Modupe Adelabu, while commending Honeywell for investing in such project, said the essence of the programme is to enhance the pupils’ entrepreneurial and technical skills that could make them employers of labour in future, rather than job seekers.

  • Bakers endorse Honeywell Flour’s SME initiative

Bakers endorse Honeywell Flour’s SME initiative

Bakers, under the aegis of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), Lagos State chapter, have commended the Management of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc for sustaining the quality of its flour production, noting that the product has contributed to the profitability of its users, especially small businesses.

According to the bakers, the flour, which is used mainly in the production of bread and other flour-based confectionery, have met with their expectations, especially through increased production with positive multiplier effects on the profit margin.

In a statement, the bakers, while at the certificate award ceremony of the regular course 23 of the Honeywell Flour Mills baking school, lauded the company for instituting a programme that seeks to transform bakers’ businesses.

Chairman, Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), Lagos State chapter, Jacob Adejorin, lauded Honeywell for instituting such a programme, saying his members have benefited immensely as they have utilised knowledge acquired to transform their respective businesses.

Describing Honeywell’s gesture as wonderful, he urged other corporate organisations to emulate the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative.

Speaking for Alumni of the school, John Johnson who graduated from Regular Course 22 urged the graduands, to put knowledge acquired into practice, saying every detail in production counts.

Executive Vice Chairman, Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, Babatunde Odunayo noted that the school, which has trained and graduated over 300 Master Bakers from different parts of the country in 22 Regular Courses and 1 Executive Course, is a highly subsidised programme aimed at empowering bakers with modern baking skills and flour handling procedures that they can use to maximise yield from flour and run their bakery operations more professionally and profitably.

Odunayo, represented by Production Director, Dr. Nino Ozara said the school remains the best any flourmill in the country has given to bakers since it touches not only their financial needs, but intellectual and social needs.

He assured that the company would continue to serve them with increased quantities of superior quality products with the recent addition of two new mills, which are state-of-the-art facilities and which has brought production capacity to 2,610 metric tonnes from 1,610 metric tonnes, a 62 per cent increase.

The flour milling business in Nigeria has evolved over the last two decades. In the past, Nigeria was largely dependent on flour imported from overseas to meet growing demand for flour derivatives such as bread, cakes, burgers etc. Nigeria’s dependence on imported flour came at a huge cost to the country as capital flight was the order of the day. This sad situation meant that jobs were not created for Nigerians as the flour-producing companies were located abroad, the quality of imported flour could not be guaranteed due depreciation in transit over time.

The emergence of Gateway Honeywell Flour Mills Limited in 1985 set the tone for transformation of the industry. In June 1995, a change in the ownership structure of the company led to a change of the name from Gateway Honeywell Flour Mills Limited to Honeywell Flour Mills Limited (HFML). After its initial public offer (IPO) and listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2008, Honeywell Flour Mills Limited became a public liability company. Trading as a publicly quoted company on NSE in 2009 also necessitated a slight adjustment in the company’s name to Honeywell Flour Mills Plc.

The entry of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc into the flour milling industry in Nigeria was a game-changer as it redefined industry standards. HFMP’s top quality flour products compelled an improvement in the quality of flour products by other players. Over the years, HFMP has positioned itself through product quality, deployment of world class facilities and manpower, as a market leader in milling, processing & packaging of flour and other wheat based products.

Since inception, Honeywell Flour Mills Plc has remained one of the most profitable companies in Nigeria. Listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange is proof of the high level of confidence in the company’s profitability. To further demonstrate the profitability of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, the company recently held its 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 24th, 2013 during which it declared profit after tax of N2.84bn.

Honeywell Flour Mills showcases N10bn plant

Honeywell Flour Mills Plc has recorded a major feat with the official inauguration of its multi-billion naira world-class flour mills located in Lagos, even as the company has hinted of plans to build a 66-hectare Flour-Gate Estate in Ogun State, which will house new factories for the production of flour and pasta in no distant time.

He spoke with journalists during a media facility tour of the company in Lagos.

According to him, the project which gulped around N10 billion was built to meet the quality standard for which the company is known.

He said with the expansion, the company had increased its production capacity by about 62 per cent to be able to meet the increasing demand for its products.

Odunayo stated that investment in building the flour mills was proof of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc commitment to ensure that it consistently produces and delivers top quality flour and a range of flour based products for the satisfaction of its valued customers in line with the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) for product quality from Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

Expatiating, the Honeywell boss added that the company’s automated warehouse which has a capacity to hold about 100,000 bags of 50kg flour is the only one of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

“The flour mills currently operate on installed capacity of 2,610 metric tonnes per day. It also has a wheat storage capacity of about 42,500 metric tonnes with a monthly usage of about 40,000 metric tonnes. The state-of-art facility has upgraded our production capacity by 63 percent.

“This is to show Nigerians what this indigenous company has been able to achieve.”

He stated that the new equipment which was supplied and installed by Bulher AG of Switzerland would guarantee operational efficiency and consistent production of top quality products.

Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Calvin Grieder, CEO of Buhler AG, Switzerland, the company which built the mills, expressed satisfaction to be associated with Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, as he noted that consumers of Honeywell products should be proud of the new equipment installed.

“It takes courage to invest in the state-of-the-art facility such as this because it is not for quick returns on investment but for quality,” said Grieder.

Grieder, who further commended Honeywell Flour Mills for placing a high premium on product quality, described HFMP as a Nigerian company that operates with the best international standard

Odunayo said: “It is a subsidised programme aimed at empowering bakers with modern baking skills and flour handling procedures that they can use to maximise yield from flour and run their bakery operations more professionally and profitably.”

Odunayo, who was represented by the company’s Production Director Dr Nino Ozara, said: “The school remains the best gift any flour mills in the country has given to bakers since it touches not only their financial needs, but intellectual and social needs.”

The school was started in 2006 and has graduated over 300 master bakers from different parts of the country in 22 regular courses and one executive course.

On the purpose of the school, Ozara said: “The company’s desire for a better world keeps us on our feet at all times, making us search for better ways to improve the quality of our brands, services and the life and businesses of our customers.”

He charged the 12 graduands, (nine males and three females), to continue to reflect on what they learnt and apply same to progress further.

Responding on behalf of the graduands, the class captain Mr David Agbonyin, said: “Blessed is the mind on which the idea of the Honeywell baking school was conceived.

“We cannot thank the management of Honeywell Flour Mills enough for the opportunity given us to be part of the school.”

  • Honeywell boss laments poor operating environment

Nigeria manufacturers have continued to rue the poor operating environment in the country, saying it is a disincentive to business.

The legion of woes confronting the manufacturing sub-sector include but not limited to the problem of increasing input costs, higher energy costs, weak infrastructure and more recently security challenges.

The Executive Vice Chairman/CEO Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, Mr Babatunde Odunayo, said that much.

He spoke at the company’s 2013 Customers’ Forum held at Golden Tulip Hotel in Lagos recently.

Despite the poor operating environment in the intervening months, the Honeywell boss, however, said, it was heartening to note that the company was able to scale through because of its strong relationship with it various customers.

“Honeywell Flour Mills forged stronger relationships with its distributors and strategic partners through several business-to-business engagement fora and initiatives aimed at improving its distribution network ahead of planned capacity increase,” he said.

“We are pleased to inform you that we have successfully completed our expansion projects with the addition of two new mills which are state-of-the-art facilities designed, produced and installed by BUHLER, the best milling equipment supplier in the world.

“With this expansion, we have increased our production capacity by about 62 per cent to be able to meet your increasing demand for our products. This will lead to business growth and more profits for you. The expansion project also included the completion of a first-of-its-kind automated warehouse in Nigeria. These will all allow us to serve you better,” he said.

He said towards the end of last financial year, following approval of the court and shareholders of the company, a business combination of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc and Honeywell Superfine Foods Ltd was effected.

“This led to the dissolution without winding up of Honeywell Superfine Foods Ltd and the company has now become the Ikeja Factory of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc. We now have the same management for the combined business and have fully integrated all our internal processes for greater efficiencies and improved quality of service for you,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, National Sales Manager, Honeywell Nigeria Plc, Mr Oluseye Ogunwole, said to support its longer term aspirations, the company is looking to expand its growth platforms via the introduction of new brands, in the near term, that will participate in fast growing food segments to meet the needs of consumers.

  • FRSC, Honeywell in road safety drive

Except for the Muslims among them, they would have joined others in the day’s Easter festivities. But they chose to embark on a life-saving enlightenment programme on the Good Friday. It was tagged, “Road Show Campaign.”

Leading the show was the Ojota Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). It was sponsored by Honeywell Superfine Foods Limited (HSFL).

As early as 8 am, HSFL’s Commercial Director, Lanre Jaiyeola, led his team to the FRSC office in a convoy of five of the company’s branded vans among other vehicles.

The Ojota Unit Commander, Leye Adegboyega, an Assistant Corps Commander (ACC), and his lieutenants, including Lucas Oguntade, evinced their readiness to make the campaign a success.

With every participant in high spirit, the carnival-like show started from the old Toll Gate, 7Up area en-route major roads including Mobolaji Johnson – Alausa, Ikeja – The Secretariat – CMD Road, Ketu – Lagos/Ibadan Expressway and finally back to the old Toll Gate.

A live band was on hand to spice up the show.

Adegboyega explained the motive behind the exercise: “It has been observed over the years that road crashes are usually on the increase during festive seasons like this; this is why we thought of intensifying public awareness drive on ensuring safety on our roads this Easter and beyond.”

With a megaphone, motorists were further enlightened on the need to adhere to traffic rules, even after any festive period, by eschewing over-speeding, phone calls while driving, dangerous driving like wrongful overtaking, overloading, covering/violating number plates rules. The importance of light signs – break lights, full lights and rear lights – was also re-emphasised.

Adegboyega reminded motorists about some of the initiatives of the FRSC in Zone RS2, including the Passengers Watch, which was recently initiated to check drivers’ excesses. Under the initiative, the FRSC official pretends to be a passenger with a view to monitoring the driver’s attitude.

The effort, he said, is aimed at achieving 50 per cent reduction in road crashes across the country in line with the UN Decade of Action.

Jaiyeola told The Nation that his company was involved in the programme because of its belief that safety is an issue that concerns everyone in the society. “Our company, Honeywell appreciates the Command’s commitment to the campaign and that spurred us into partnering with it, all for safety on our roads,” he said.

Handbills bearing messages on the causes and prevention of road accidents were freely distributed during the campaign. Honeywell-branded pens, notebooks, noodles, snacks and leaflets were also distributed. Regular and Special Marshals of the Corps were not left out.

A commuter, Mrs Anike Omolayo told The Nation at Ketu: “I’m impressed by all the efforts being made by this Command of the FRSC to make our roads safe; I only hope other Commands will follow suit.”

Having discovered that some drivers were suffering from hypertension among other health problems, the Adegboyega-led Command recently carried out blood pressure and blood sugar tests in some commercial motor parks its domain, all in a bid to promote safety on the roads.

Beyond the Road is another such programmes carried out at Biode Park on March 25, during which no fewer than 59 drivers underwent blood pressure and sugar level tests. Twenty-eight drivers were also tested at Owena Park, Ojota, the next day.

The beneficiaries and their leaders at both parks were full of praises for the Command over the exercise they adjudged laudable. The Command re-educated the public on the need to ensure safety at all times, even “beyond the road.”

After the Easter period, Adegboyega assured the public that his Command’s Motorised Patrol along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, embarked on through its Special Intervention Projects (SIP), would continue. “It is done essentially to restrict motorists to the prescribed speed limits,” he stated.
