  • Why we honoured Olubadan, by CEO Africa

Why we honoured Olubadan, by CEO Africa

The Chairman of CEO Africa, Mr. Cletus Ilobanafor, has explained why the magazine unveiled a docu-drama and magazine to mark the centenary birthday of the Olubadan, Oba Samuel Odulana, Odugade I.

The docu-drama, titled: Olubadan of Ibadanland: The living legend, The pride of Africa, was unveiled yesterday at the ancient Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Addressing reporters after the event, Ilobanafor said: “We are keen on celebrating Africa’s living legends and projecting Africa’s image. The Olubadan is a living legend and he needs to be celebrated.

“Olubadan is the oldest living monarch and that is why we are trying to put his name in the Guinness Book of Record. There is no first-class monarch in the world that is up to his age. We are packaging him so that the world will begin to celebrate our own. We want to project personalities, qualities, characters and others to the world, so that they will join us in celebrating him.

“During our research, we found out that Oba Odulana has a passion for education, believes in justice and you cannot buy him with money. Such people are rare in our society. I believe in the unity of this country and if a Hausa man can do a project on an Igbo man, if a Yoruba man can also do a project on a Hausa man, there is no doubt that the country will be united.”

President, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero said the Olubadan’s centenary celebration is history in the making, adding: “We are grateful to CEO Africa for the great job it has done to honour our monarch because it is not an easy task to compile all this materials on a man that has lived a meaningful life.”

Dignitaries at the occasion include, the Otun Olubadan, Chief Omowale Kuye; Mr. Seyo Makinde; former Secretary to the Oyo State Government Chief Sarafadeen Alli; President of Jerico Business Club Ismaila Bello; Aare Alasa of Ibadanland Chief Lekan Alabi; CCII Vice-President Chief Wole Akinwande and Chief Olatunde Aboderin, among others.

  • Honoured by their people

The 2013 Ibadan Festival has been held at the main bowl of the Liberty Stadium. It featured presentation of awards to prominent Ibadan indigenes.  OSEHEYE OKWUOFU reports.

    THE crowd was huge.

Liberty Stadium in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, brimmed with people last weekend for the 2013 Ibadan Festival.

The award was conceived by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana, and the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), the umbrella body of the town’s indigenes.

Different T-shirts with the portraits of those being honoured adorned the venue.

Others wore the Ankara Fabric chosen for the occasion by some awardees. Hawkers make brisk business, selling pastries and soft drinks.

It was an Ibadan event to the core. The Ibadan king of fuji music, Alhaji Rasheed Ayinde (a.k.a. Fuji Merenge), was on the stage. There was an array of drummers drummed and sang the praises of guests.

Security operatives had a hectic time, controlling the crowd.

Some of the awardees who are politicians mobilised their supporters from the 33 local governments to the state for the event.

The President of CCII, Chief Bayo Oyero, said the award was to spur honourees to do more. He praised the recipients for their contributions to the development of Ibadan, the home of warriors and valiant men and women.

“It is in recognition of their efforts and immense contributions to the development of Ibadanland that brought about this award. When you appreciate what someone did, the person will in turn do more. A good turn deserves another,” he said.

The demand for Ibadan State was not left out. While some spoke in favour, others expressed mixed feelings.

An awardee, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, described the award as a mark of honour.

“I am elated and honoured. I feel very glad. It is a great honour that you cannot come by easily.

” The recognition of one’s little contribution towards the progress of Ibadanland, the fact that it is recognised and commended is pleasing and also it gives one the courage to do more and put more effort. By the grace of God, the creation of Ibadan state through prayer will be a reality,” Lanlehin said.

Hon. Seyi Makinde described the award as a call to service.

He said: “You can see how colourful this place is and I believe they would take up the challenge. Some of us that are watching the event will definitely contribute their own quota towards reviving Ibadan common heritage.”

Though he was optimistic about Ibadan state, Makinde said the process of state creation as enshrined in the Constitution would make the realisation of Ibadan state a bit difficult.

However, a member of Olubadan-in-Council, High Chief Omowale Kuye, expressed reservations about the call for the creation of Ibadan state.

“Well, everybody is talking about it, not only Ibadan people, almost every village wants a state; every community about two or three houses are saying we want our state. I don’t want to join in the chorus. At the time they were creating various states, Ibadan people did not demand a state because if they had demanded for it, they would have had it on a platter of gold,” he said.

Among the recipients were the Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Oloye Jumoke Akinjide and Makinde.

In attendance were Prince Gbade Lana; Hon. Aliu Ahmad Pategi; High Chief Omowale Kuye; Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Olufemi Olaifa; Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Eddy Oyewole; Prof Femi Lana; Alhaji Isiaka Akinpelu; Chief Yewande Durosaro; Ekerin Iyalode of Ibadanland, Chief Mrs Rasidat Adefunyi; Gomo of Kuje, Abuja Alhaji Haruna Tanko Jubrin; Etsu of Yaba, Abuja Abdullahi Adamu; Chief Yekini Adeojo, Elder Wole Oyelese, former Minister of Power, Alhaji Olayiwola Olakojo; former Secretary to state Government (SSG) and members of CCII executive Council.

The award was given to him at the EMRC Agribusiness 2013 Forum held at the Serena Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda.

The forum, themed: “The Agri-food sector: A catalyst for sustainable and inclusive growth in Africa”, was organised by EMRC and Rwanda’s Ministry for Agriculture and Animal Resources.

Rwandan Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi, who was the Guest of Honour, said no nation could develop without agriculture.

He said: “This forum must highlight the important business opportunities agriculture and the agribusiness can provide sub-Sahara Africa. The Agri-food sector must be a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive growth in Africa, so all hands must be on deck to attract investors to sub-Sahara Africa.”

EMRC lauded the Osun Rural Enterprise and Agricultural Programme (O’REAP), which trains youths in various aspects of farming.

About 610 youths were trained last year at the O’REAP Youth Academy Farms located in the nine federal constituencies. Twenty participants were selected from each local government and 10 from the Ife East Area Office.

This year, 996 youths, three from each of the 332 wards, are undergoing training.

Forty Osun youths are being trained in mechanised farming in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The Aregbesola administration assists farmers by giving them improved seedlings, fertiliser, fumigants and hectares of cleared land.

“To reach a top executive position in private and public establishments is not an easy task, you will all agree with me. So also you will agree with me the more that reaching the top is not as difficult as remaining and even sustaining the momentum that took you to the top,” he said.

He noted that the gathering was meant to tap from the experience of the elders.

“Therefore, in addition to the physical effort of individuals, you need spiritual effort and words of elders. “I know what kind of effort goes into earning these feats. You guys are icons of your individual field and that of our generation and good sons of Ibadan. You have just made us to realise that, whatever man can conceive, he can achieve,” he said.

  • ‘Why Adekunle Fajuyi should be honoured’

The Federal Government has been urged to give a posthumous honour to Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, a former Military Governor of the old Western Region, who was killed in a military coup in July, 1966.

The organisers of the Adekunle Fajuyi Festival Project (AFFP) made the call while briefing reporters on the forthcoming maiden edition of the Adekunle Fajuyi Festival, 2013.

They said the late Fajuyi should be accorded his “rightful place in the scheme of things in the country”.

The event starts on July 22 and ends on the 29th.

It would feature an international peace conference, culture and art exhibition, peace concerts, rallies and many other events.”

The organisers, led by Mr. Femi Alufa, in a statement, said: “It is time the Federal Government named a standard monument, hospital or academic institution after him.”

The Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe, said: “Fajuyi exemplified courage, peace, patriotism and loyalty to one’s fatherland.

“He symbolised the unity of the country. The virtues he exemplified are absent in many people today, which explains the problems currently facing the country.

“The late Fajuyi had an opportunity to save his life, as the coup plotters only wanted to kill Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi, the then Head of State, who visited Fajuyi at his Ibadan base.

“But Fajuyi chose to die with his guest, remembering the proverb ‘Aepa alejo oni sakin’, meaning ‘you cannot claim bravery when your guest has been killed.’

“He could not, as governor, have thrown Ironsi out to be killed like an unwanted dog. He died with him.”

Alufa said the festival has become necessary to sustain the late Fajuyi’s legacies.

He said: “The annual festival will be the ultimate honour to celebrate the universal value of peace, patriotism, selfless leadership and courage which the late Fajuyi symbolised and to teach these lessons in service to humanity.”

One of the late Fajuyi’s sons, Donald, urged the people to sustain his father’s values and vision, so that his efforts to keep Nigeria together would not be in vain.

He solicited the support of state governments and corporate bodies in making the festival a success, saying: “Nigeria’s heroes should not be confined to a corner in the history of the country.”
