Hoodlums burn INEC office in Suswam’s local govt

Gun-totting thugs last night,  believed to be supporters of one of the candidates yesterday set the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ugba town, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State on fire.

Ugba is the headquarters of Logo Council, hometown of Governor Gabriel Suswam, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial candidate. His opponent is Senator Barnabas Gemade of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The place has supporters of both parties.

Eyewitnesses said Ugba town became rowdy as people were scampering for safety, with sporadic gunshots which resulted to injury of several persons.

It was learnt that the armed men who unleashed the terror were dressed in military uniform.

Police Spokesman  Ezeani Ameachi confirmed the incident and said policemen had been deployed to the affected area to maintain peace.

    Hoodlums attack commissioner’s home

Suspected hoodlums, on Saturday, stormed the home of Lagos State Commissioner for Transport Kayode Opeifa in Agege, Lagos.

They were said to have attacked the residence about 1am following a failed attempt to kidnap his brother, Mr Adeyinka Akeem, Executive Secretary of Orile-Agege Local Government Area of Lagos.

They shot at the massive gate, the building and the two vehicles parked in front of the house.

It was learnt that the team was led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives candidate for Agege Federal Constituency, Niyi Raheem.

Opeifa’s aide, who pleaded not to be named, said they had just returned from preparing for the day’s election when the incident occurred.

“We were relaxing at the front of the house when we sighted some youths who identified themselves as Awawa boys. When they tried to create a nuisance in the neighbourhood, we dismissed them. Few minutes after, we saw a colleague running as if he was chased. Suddenly, we saw some men clad in black attires wih bullet proofs. As they shot sporadically, we ran into the building. They tried to enter the premises but they couldn’t. We were all at home with the commissioner. It was after the police officer attached to him shot into the air that they stopped and left.  My vehicle was damaged,” he said.

Speaking with The Nation, the council’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Mr Oluremi Abosede, said: “I was at my duty post eating when a man entered the office and raised a machete on me. He shook his head and left. As I locked the door, I heard release. They shot once but damaged parked vehicles. They managed to enter the premises thinking Oga was within the premises. Even when people hid inside the council’s canteen, they shot at them.

“There was no casualty. The man who was injured is now hale and hearty.”

  • Hoodlums shoot Amaechi’s convoy in Port Harcourt

Hoodlums shoot Amaechi’s convoy in Port Harcourt

•Soldiers lay siege to Oshiomhole’s  country home

Barely 24 hours after the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, raised the alarm that a plot to assassinate him was on, his convoy was yesterday attacked in Port Harcourt.

Thugs, who are suspected to be working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  fired gunshots at his convoy.

Amaechi met at the Government House, Port Harcourt yesterday morning with the caretaker chairmen of the 23 local government areas and other stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers Governor, David Iyofor, said in a text message at 7:33 p.m. yesterday: “Gunshots fired at Governor Amaechi. This (yesterday) evening, gunshots were fired at the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, in Rumuolumeni (Port Harcourt), Obio/Akpor LGA (of Rivers State) by PDP thugs. Obio/Akpor LGA is the home of PDP Rivers governorship candidate, Nyesom Wike (an indigene of Rumueprikom).

“The thugs attacked the governor and his entourage with bottles, stones and various dangerous objects. Then, gunshots were fired at the governor.

“For now, two APC supporters are confirmed injured and bloodied. When the governor was leaving the community, a bonfire was set up on the road to prevent him from leaving. More gunshots were fired at his convoy. Governor Amaechi was on a door-to-door ward campaign in the state.”

Police spokesman Muhammad Kidaya Ahmad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said he was still trying to get the details.

Amaechi, raising the alarm that his life was under threat, said he would not leave Nigeria, as advised and would vote for all the candidates of the APC.

Commissioner for Information and Communications Mrs. Ibim Semenitari last night in Port Harcourt said:

“The PDP in Rivers State has concluded plans to launch house-to-house attack on APC chieftains in the state, with the aid of security personnel.

“The APC wishes to draw the attention of the police and other security agents to this unwholesome development on the eve of the election scheduled for March 28. It is more worrisome seeing that a few days ago, a team of security personnel visited Governor Amaechi’s hometown to carry out a reconnaissance. The visit coincided with authoritative information that Governor Amaechi had been marked for assassination by a combined team of the army and state security service personnel.”

The Rivers government, according to Semenitari, reminded the security agencies that they owed their allegiance, first of all, to Nigeria and to its people, and must remember that they owed every Nigerian a duty of protection, regardless of the person’s religious, political or social affiliation.

Soldiers yesterday laid siege to the country home of Edo State Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in Iyamho, Auchi, Etsako-West Local Government Area – an action seen by residents as an attempt to “intimidate him on the election day”.

Besides, there were unconfirmed reports that the military high command in Abuja had drafted a special unit to All Progressives Congress (APC) strongholds in Edo North and Edo South senatorial zones to work against the ruling party in the state.

According to a statement by Edo Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Louis Odion, last night, the aim is to manipulate the election’s outcome in favour of PDP.

Odion said: “Family members of the Comrade Governor were shocked to find his country home taken over by soldiers this afternoon. When asked, the invading force said they were acting on orders from above. We also have it on good authority that the Army high command in Abuja had sent some soldiers to Edo State on what they described as ‘special operations’. In order not to arouse suspicion, these soldiers were told to dress in suits and pose as SSS operatives and station themselves at polling units on Election Day, particularly in areas seen as APC strongholds. They were told to harass and possibly detain polling agents of APC in order to clear the ground for rigging by agents of PDP who would be wearing special hand bands. It is a rehash of the rigging manual implemented in Ekiti last year.

“Two days ago, our campaign jingle on Channels Television in which Oshiomhole endorsed General Buhari was stopped abruptly after few exposures on orders from above.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to use this medium to tell the Army high command that Comrade Oshiomhole cannot be intimidated even with whole might of the Nigerian Army from insisting on the application of the principle of ‘One Man, One Vote’ on the Election Day. We hope that as patriots, officers and men of the Nigerian Army will not allow themselves to be used by political desperadoes to truncate this democracy.”

  • The Nation man attacked by hoodlums

The Nation man attacked by hoodlums

Hoodlums attacked a graphic artist with The Nation Joe Ukah, last Monday, taking away his phone and N15, 000 cash.

The incident happened around Dopemu under bridge on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway at 10.30pm when he was returning from office.

Ukah was injured on the head.

He withdrew the money to give his brother who was billed to travel the following day. Part of the money was also meant for his mother in the village.

Ukah, with a bandaged head said yesterday: “A colleague dropped me off near Dopemu bridge; It was really dark so I decided to walk to the next bus stop since my chances of getting a bus there were slim; I was still heading to Abule-Egba. I was almost at the bus stop when suddenly someone grabbed me from behind and searched my pocket. As I began to struggle, four other men came with sticks and hit me on my head. They beat me mercilessly that I bled. Before I knew it, my phone, wallet and the N15, 000 I withdrew earlier on that day had gone.”

Ukah said he wanted to give the money to his brother who was travelling and send some part of it to his mother.

“I used my shirt to tie my head because I had bled so much. I didn’t have a kobo on me. It was a Good Samaritan who saw me that gave me his shirt to put on and N100 to Abule-Egba. When I got to the hospital few minutes past 11pm, the nurses on duty didn’t want to attend to me if not for one of them who recognised me. I wasn’t given first-aid treatment because I had no money on me. They only stopped the blood and wrapped my head with bandage

“The following day, I went back to the hospital because the pain deprived me from sleeping and I thought my head was going to fall off. I was asked to pay N20, 000 for treatment but I deposited N15, 000. My head was stitched in five different places before it was bandaged. I couldn’t resume office for two days because of the pain.

Ukah thanked God for saving his life, urging people to always be on the alert especially at night.

  • Hoodlums attack petrol stations, injures 65-yr-old guard, others

Hoodlums attack petrol stations, injures 65-yr-old guard, others

Residents of Itamasa village in Ijofin, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, were thrown into panic on Monday February 9, 2015, when suspected hoodlums attacked two petrol stations, injuring a 65-year-old night guard, Hungbeme Asogba, and customers at the stations.

The affected petrol stations are Exalt and Jokuns Petrol Stations.

Asogba, who suffered machete cuts on his face and several parts of his body, is now receiving treatment in a hospital in Benin Republic. He was not allowed to speak with our reporter, who visited him in company with other sympathisers last weekend.

Eyewitnesses said the hoodlums looted the petrol stations and carted away unspecified amount which was the proceed of the day’s sales.

The hoodlums were said to have been led by one Samuel, who claimed to be collecting unsubstantiated fee for an amorphous association in the council area.

Recalling the incident, the Manager of Jokuns Petrol Station, Mr Hunpevi Mathew, said the hoodlums who were armed with dangerous weapons swooped on the station and dispossessed customers and workers of money.

“We were selling fuel to customers around 6.30 pm, when some members of the gang stormed our station and demanded for the payment of an unsubstantiated levy for selling fuel to customers. When they noticed that I was not going to accede to their demands , one of them handed his phone to me and asked me to speak with their boss called Samuel, but insisted that I would not talk to anybody because I am not the owner of the station. The hoodlums then forcibly took away some jerry cans of fuel from customers.

“Again, the (hoodlums) returned in a Nissan car around 9pm same day, led by Samuel. They were armed with cutlass, axe and gun and they switched off our generator before unleashing terror on us. They hijacked a Ford bus from a customer and loaded it with fuel stored in several jerry cans and took away all the proceeds of the day’s sales. They also robbed many of our customers who were buying fuel at the time of the incident. We had to run for our dear lives.

‘’As a matter of fact, I trekked through the bush path to town, following which I contacted Ipokia Police Station for help. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station immediately led his men to the scene and they searched everywhere for the missing bus that was stolen from our customers, all to no avail. It was much later that the bus was sighted in a particular place in the community, where it was abandoned by the hoodlums.”

The Baale of Itamasa, Chief Suru Poviwhede, explained that Samuel and his boys had been terrorising petrol stations owners in the community lately. He recalled the incident: ”Samuel has become the nemesis of petrol dealers in our community and beyond. On the day of the incident, I received information around 6 pm that he (Samuel), was planning to invade the community and attack some filling stations. I quickly informed the Ololo of Ijofin, Oba Moruf Awode, and the monarch asked me to inform  one Titus Jide Oppressor, who Samuel claims to be his boss. When I spoke with Oppressor on the telephone, he said he was not willing to reprimand Samuel, because he was no longer under his authority. Oppressor added that he had warned Samuel to desist from harassing petrol station owners, all to no avail.

“About 9pm on the day, distraught residents, who fled from the scene, informed me that Samuel had led his boys to attack workers and injured a guard at Exalt Petrol Station. They even raided some customers who were buying fuel into their vehicles and kegs. They were said to have also robbed customers and fuel attendants of a lot of money before moving to another petrol station called Jokuns, located in the neighbourhood. They vandalised the station, dispossessed customers and workers of the station of money and wounded a night guard and several others before stealing a Ford bus with number plate, XC 961 FST, from a customer.

‘’It was the DPO of Ipokia Police Station that took the night guard that was attacked with cutlass by Samuel and his gang to a hospital, while a number of customers and residents that also sustained various degrees of injuries are now being treated in various hospitals in Ipokia and Benin Republic.”

It was gathered that Samuel is now at large, while nine members of his gang have been arrested and are now being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, alongside their operational vehicle allegedly stuffed with dangerous weapons and three motorcycles.

A source, who asked not to be named, explained that the residents of the community are yet to get over the shock of the attack.

She said: ”My brother , we have not overcome the shock which the attack  by Samuel and his boys  has left in us. We fear he might regroup his boys and unleash terror on this community because the residents actually played an important role in apprehending some members of his gang when they were trying to escape after the attack.”

Several attempts made by our correspondent to get Samuel’s response were futile as he did not respond.

A female voice, who answered his call on Tuesday, claiming to be his wife said: “I am Samuel’s wife. He is not around now, he forgot his phone at home. Please drop your identity and comments and he would call you back when he returns.”

Samuel did not revert to our correspondent as of the time of filing this report.

In a telephone conversation with our correspondent,  Samuel’s lawyer, who simply identified himself as Barrister Jide, said his client was a concerned resident that was simply fighting against illegal sale of fuel to a ‘petrol smuggling syndicate’ in the community.

“As a concerned resident, my client (Samuel) was miffed by the fact that some petrol dealers have been using their stations to perpetrate illegal sale of fuel to trans-border petrol syndicate.

“He told me that he visited the two stations to prevent the nefarious transactions and that he was also wounded in the course of carrying out a ‘patriotic’ responsibility. He had lately written several petitions to various police formations and other law enforcement agencies without fruitful intervention. I have, however, advised him not to take laws in his own hands.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of Ogun Police Command, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, explained that the command has arrested Samuel.

He said: “ The man called Samuel, has been terrorising the community lately. It will be recalled that he carried out similar attacks on petrol station operators in the community last year. He is fond of attacking people violently and running to the police to claim that he was attacked. This is what he has also done in this case by lying to the police that he had been attacked, whereas he was the one that led his boys to attack people who were carrying out their transactions at the petrol stations. He went to the two petrol stations and attacked the people there, including a night guard, who sustained injuries and has been taken to a hospital by the police.’’

The PPRO, however, said that the police could not jump into conclusion until the ongoing investigation is concluded.

“The DPO of Ipokia Police Station said he was surprised to find out that contrary to Samuel’s statement, he was the one that actually attacked the two petrol stations. However, we have also arrested nine members of his gang that participated in the attack and they are now being held at the SCID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, where further investigation is ongoing,” Adejobi added.

It will be recalled that Samuel was accused of complicity in the attack on Alpha Petrol Station, Ijofin on April 3, 2014, where a 70-year-old Pa Simeon Hunkokoe and his four sons who were the station’s attendants were attacked with cutlasses.

Samuel was said to have stormed the petrol station to demand for the sum of N50,000 as ‘settlement’. Samuel and his gang were said to have been angered by the posture of one of the attendants called Mathew Hunkokoe, who asked for time to get clearance from the owner of the station on the telephone, hence, the gang attacked Mathew and his three brothers with cutlasses and dangerous weapons, while their father, who rushed to the scene to rescue his son, was also severely brutalised.

  • Hoodlums kill retired headteacher in Delta

A retired principal of Ughelli Government College, Ughelli, Delta State, Chief Dennis E. Ekee, has been killed.

The retired teacher was said to have been killed by suspected hoodlums when he was going for a cross-over church service in the town in the presence of one of his daughters.

It was learnt that the late Ekee hailed from Irri in Isoko North Local Government Area.

Also, a journalist and publisher of Rainbow Newspaper, Comrade Mathias Ogbagah, was attacked on Wednesday at 8.30pm by suspected robbers at his home on Ogodo Street in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area.

Ogbagah is the Secretary of the Ughelli chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ).

It was learnt that he was returning from a ceremony when he walked into about eight robbers in his compound.

The hoodlums were said to have shot him thrice at close range.

Narrating his ordeal to our reporter, Ogbagah said: “Just when I entered the compound, they stopped me and collected all I had, including my phones and the cash in my pocket. One of them shot me and left me, believing l was dead, considering the pool of blood that was coming out from my body.

“On noticing that they had gone, I did all I could to seek help. I tried to jump through the fence behind the compound. But they shot at me, on realising that I was trying to escape. So, I acted like I was dead. I was later taken to a hospital.”

Police spokesman, Celestina Kalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (ASP), confirmed the incident.

She said the command was investigating the matter.

  • Hoodlums attack church

Some hoodlums invaded yesterday the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Pillar of Fire,  at LA Primary School area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, during service.

They allegedly flogged the pastor and church members.

The thugs, who came to the church on motorcycles, were also said to have destroyed some items, including chairs, clock, windows and electrical appliances.

An eyewitness said policemen, who came to calm the situation, arrested some of the hoodlums but were attacked by a mob, which rescued the thugs. A policeman was stabbed in the neck.

A rival pastor within the vicinity was said to have sponsored the attack.

Police spokesman Wole Ogodo said details of the incident were still sketchy. He said the command was still investigating.

  • Three killed in Ilorin street brawl

Three killed in Ilorin street brawl

    •Police: two dead

    •APC, PDP trade blame

Hoodlums suspected to be supporters of a party in Kwara State engaged in a free- for-all yesterday in Ilorin, the state capital.

Three persons were said to have been killed and 15 others were injured.

But the police confirmed that only two persons died in the process.

Among those who were injured were three siblings, who were said to have been hit by stray bullets.

Trouble started last Friday after some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Alore area of Ogidi ward in Ilorin West Local Government allegedly defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It was gathered that the hoodlums clashed with one another as they could not agree on a sharing formula for the N20,000 reportedly doled out to them.

Another version linked the crisis to a clash between the hoodlums and some vigilance group men shortly after the programme.

The fracas, it was gathered, started at Abayawo and later spread to Alore-Ode Adana-Omoda, Ode- Alawusa Okelele, all of Ilorin downtown.

It was gathered that in a reprisal attack on Sunday, a man simply identified as Ebba, was allegedly killed at Ode Alwusa.

To avenge his death, hoodlums went on rampage yesterday by setting up bonfires and paralysing commercial and social activities in the affected areas.

The “hoodlums” wore masks, brandishing dangerous weapons went on a rampage that lasted for almost five hours.

Combined team of soldiers and anti-riot policemen were drafted in the areas at 10am to disperse the warring factions.

Before the arrival of the security personnel, some youths in the areas also took up arms against the “hoodlums”.

Several property, including cars, were damaged.

Police spokesperson Ajayi Okasanmi said 12 persons have been arrested.

The APC and PDP have accused each other of causing the crisis. APC spokesperson Sulyman Buhari said that “the APC expresses sadness that the life of a young Kwaran can be brutally cut short by PDP thugs due to mere controversies surrounding the distribution of a largesse given to PDP members by a former senator.

He said: “PDP’s violent activities are of concern to the APC. The APC has consistently alerted the people and the police on the violent disposition, gangterism and the rich record of violence the PDP flaunts. Surprisingly, the PDP has broken its own record of violence in the state. We warn the PDP to desist from oiling its evidently weak political machinery with the blood of Kwarans.”

But the PDP in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Rex Olawoye, accused the APC supporters of attacking PDP members shortly after their alleged defection to APC on Friday last week.

He said: “Our party is saddened by yet another violent attempt on its supporters. There has been a well oiled plan to cow our members by the opposition elements.  “A similar occurrence happened in Omu Aran on Saturday, where daredevil APC thugs invaded what was supposed to be a private meeting of the Ifelodun chapter of the party, and chased all the stakeholders present away.”

  • Six killed as hoodlums attack NDLEA officials

Three operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and three villagers have been killed in a clash between  security personnel and hoodlums in the Owode area of Idi Iroko, Ogun State.

The NDLEA officials were said to have stormed the village in search of some suspected drug dealers allegedly operating within the Idi Iroko-Owode axis.

Trouble started when the NDLEA operatives arrived the sleepy village at about 8.30 am, firing sporadic shots into the air and killing three villagers in the process.

An eyewitness alleged that it was the death of the three yet-to-be-identified persons that triggered off a reprisal attack by the village youths.

The youths alleged that the killing of the residents by security personnel posted to Idiroko border was becoming a recurring decimal.

“When the enormity of what happened dawned on the NDLEA operatives, they made a quick u-turn and headed back to base. Unfortunately, they ran into some irate youths who had gathered at the village square with the corpses of three of their community members earlier felled by the bullets fired by the security men.

“The youths opened fire at the approaching patrol van and in the ensuing exchange, three NDLEA operatives lay dead in a pool of blood. Other NDLEA officials in the team sustained various degrees of bullet wounds. The NDLEA managed to escape with the bodies of their deceased colleagues,” the witness added.

Another version said it was the villagers who opened fire at the security men, killing three in the process.

The source said: “The swift response of the villagers and the number of guns in their hands shows that they were battle-ready” the source said.

Now, an uneasy calm is in  the area as a combined teams of military men and riot policemen from Elewe Eran in Abeokuta are on ground to restore peace.

NDLEA’s Head of Public Affairs, Mitchel Ofoyeju, who confirmed the attack told The Nation that only three of their men were killed in the attack.

He said NDLEA officials got an intelligence report that some suspected drug dealers had shifted their operation to Owode.

Ofoyeju said based on the information, a team of NDLEA operatives were drafted to the area, adding: “I can confirm to you that our men were on an operation at Owode to recover and arrest some drug dealers. During the operation, three of our men were shot dead by some villagers.”

He said that the bodies of the deceased operatives had since been deposited at the mortuary, while investigations into the killing by both the police and NDLEA were ongoing.

Mitchel said a person had been arrested and was being detained at Owode.
