  • Hoodlums brutalise trader in Lagos market after destroying ware

A textile trader, Mrs Bola Badmus is now in a critical condition after she was allegedly brutally assaulted by suspected thugs at the Oke Arin Market, Lagos Island.

The incident happened at about 4.30 pm on Saturday April 14, 2018 along Lawrence Lane inside the market.

The Nation learnt that Badmus, had reprimanded one of the hoodlums identified as Aregbe for his refusal to apologise after colliding with her ware and scattering her clothes on the ground while passing through the market.

Her remarks were said to have upset Aregbe, who took it as an affront and left only to return some minutes later with about eight cane-wielding gang members and mercilessly beat Badmus, causing her injuries on her body.

The 38-year-old trader was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment, while the case was reported to Ebute Ero Police Station.

It was gathered that the police has yet to apprehend Aregbe and his boys. Instead the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the station was said to have called Aregbe’s boss called Okoro on his mobile telephone asking him to intervene in the matter, while the culprit was not arrested.

Speaking with our correspondent on the telephone on her sickbed, Badmus said she had queried Aregbe for scattering her wares on the floor, only for the man and his boys to brutalise her in full public glare.

“I had displayed my wares at my stall and Aregbe who was passing through the market suddenly collided with my stall and scattered my wares on the floor. He was angry that I queried him for his inappropriate conduct and left only to return with about eight men wielding cane and they mercilessly descended on  me , beating me a to pulp.

“Despite the fact that I was bleeding, the hoodlums ignored the intervention of my colleagues in the market and continued to beat me until I almost passed out. I was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where I am currently receiving treatment. It is sad that the police which should protect people from injustice have become indifferent to my plight and made no attempt to arrest those who brutalised me to date.”

Also, in a petition forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command, the victim’s husband, Mr Saheed Badmus appealed to the Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohinmi Edgal to intervene by ordering the arrest of the masterminds of the assault.

The petition entitled “Assault, harm and conduct likely to cause breach of peace” dated April 17, read in part: “Aregbe had a friction with my wife in the market and as a result, her market was scattered on the ground; my wife challenged him (Aregbe) and an argument ensued between the two of them in the presencxe of other people in the market. Aregbe, instead of apologising for what happened left the scene and later came back with a group of boys armed with sticks and other dangerous weapons and attacked my wife, Mrs Bola Badmus. She was seriously beaten, brutalised and injured. After that, Aregbe and his gang left the place because no person dared to challenge them.

“The matter was reported at Ebute Ero Police Station, and she was asked to go to hospital and treat herself. She later made statement regarding the issue but up till this moment, the police has not responded positively because they know the gang leader, Aregbe and his notorious boys.”

Contacted, the spokesman of Lagos State Police Command, Mr Chike Oti said the incident was not reported to the police.

He said: “The DPO of the station said the case was not incident or reported to the station.”

  • Senate: mace theft a positive development

Sen. Abu Ibrahim (APC-Katsina South) has described the Wednesday’s invasion of the Senate Chamber by hoodlums as a “positive development’’.

He stated this on Friday while he fielded questions from State House correspondents in Abuja.

Some hoodlums had on Wednesday entered the Senate chamber during plenary, attacked some persons and made away with the mace.

The legislator, however, observed that the attack was a blessing in disguise as the incident had revealed the security lapse at the assembly.

“Obviously, what has happened is a concern to every Nigerian politician. But, at the same time, we have to accept in Nigeria or all over the world politics sometimes can create a situation of this kind of what happened.

“But this has given us two opportunities; one, to look at the security of the National Assembly itself whereby I think Nigerian National Assembly is the most insecure assembly I have seen in my life.

“Wherever I went to there was good security, you can’t just go in, you cannot access, you cannot go to officers.

“But now if you go to our offices, like my office yesterday there were over 50 people waiting for me and I didn’t give anybody appointment.

“So, this has probably influenced us in the leadership to sit down and critically examine the security of the National Assembly itself. So, it is a positive development.’’

He said the second `benefit’ of the Mace saga was that members of the senate became more united, and they renewed their pledge to abide by the constitution and rules of the national assembly.

According to the senator, the incident has also afforded the senators opportunity to ask themselves questions on what happened and why it happened.

He said: “Secondly we sat at executive session as senators, we asked ourselves what happened and why. And we told ourselves the truth.

“We even pin-pointed culprits in what led to this and we came out with a promise that everyone of us will support and abide by the provision of the constitution.

“Our rules in the national assembly in the senate and obviously we accepted that we are all senators, the same rank, elected by our people and we have the same right and privileges.

“Therefore, this is the second benefit if we can call it benefit of what has happened what we saw two days ago.’’

On the activities of the Buhari Support Group, Ibrahim disclosed that the group would be inaugurating its offices in Edo, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States on Monday.

He added that the group’s campaign buses would also be inaugurated at the same time.

  • Hoodlums assault 86-yr-old Lagos traditional ruler

Hoodlums led by suspected chieftains of a factional commercial tricycle association have allegedly assaulted the Baale of Baruwa area of Ipaja, a Lagos suburb, Chief Khalid Baruwa.

The incident happened penultimate Saturday, when Baruwa tried to prevent them from forcibly taking over parks operated by a rival commercial tricycle operators in his community.

The traditional ruler claimed those who attacked him were led by a chieftain of a transport union called Abiola.

The hoodlums who rode on 20 motorcycles left with a promise to return in a more violent manner.

In a petition sent to the Lagos State Police Command, the traditional said the hoodlums who came from Amikanle and Kola areas of Alagbado.

The petition dated March 10, 2018, read in part: ”As the traditional ruler of Baruwa town in Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, I humbly write to quickly alert you of the invasion of the ever peaceful town by hundreds of hoodlums who were said to have been brought from Kola and Amikanle areas of Agbado Oke –Odo Local Council Development Area to forcibly take-over tricycle parks in my domain.

”Some concerned residents came to quickly alert me in my palace that some armed intruders had invaded the tricycle parks in Baruwa, physically attacking the operators. I went straight to the scene and alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ipaja Police Division, who quickly sent his patrol team to the spot.

”Most of the intruders refused to be cautioned and this made me to summon all those concerned to my palace. At the palace, through the submissions of the stakeholders, I discovered that the State Ministry of Transportation, through its Permanent Secretary had intervened into the lingering union issue and made all the parties to sign an undertaking in your office on Friday 9th March, 2018 in the presence of the Area commander Area “P” Command, ACP Alade Abdulsalam

According to Baruwa, but for his quick intervention and that of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ipaja Police Division, the fully armed thugs would have turned his domain into a war zone.

”I advised all of them to go and maintain peace until Monday 12th March, 2018, for me to do a proper investigation into the matter with the police. It was at this point that one of the thugs removed the cap of a (tricycle) operator in Baruwa, Olalekan Sorinola and when I asked him to return it immediately, he pushed me at the chest. I was prevented from falling on the floor by one of my grandchildren, Hakeem Ajulo whom they equally attacked.

Calls placed to the mobile phone number of police spokesman, Mr Chike Oti were not answered, while he did not also respond to a text message sent to his phone number as of press time.

  • Residents flee community as hoodlums kill one, injure others over selection of traditional ruler

Residents flee community as hoodlums kill one, injure others over selection of traditional ruler

Residents of Ayila community in Ogun Waterside Local Government, Ogun State, are allegedly fleeing the town after a man identified as Bayo Oluseyi was killed and several others injured during a fracas over selection of new Baale(traditional ruler) of the town.

It was learnt that the nomination of an unnamed man for the traditional stool by a powerful politician in the community triggered the fight.

The controversial nominee was said to have been rejected by a section of the community.

The Nation learnt that a lingering tussle for the stool which started in 1957 had polarised the ruling houses, despite various mediation by community leaders and government.

One of the ruling houses was said to have declined the offer to present candidate for the stool when it was its turn to ascend the throne a few years ago.

It was learnt that a candidate from the next ruling house was selected as Baale, following the rejection by the rightful ruling house.

Trouble however started after the death of the Baale, when the ruling house which initially rejected the offer insisted the vacant stool must be filled by one of its members.

A source said: ”There is tension in the community as we speak because of the recent killing and violence following the insistence of a ruling house that its candidate should be the next Baale.

” A top politician in this area is the one who is backing an unpopular candidate from a rejected ruling house and it has caused serious problem and palpable fear in this community.

”Many residents are leaving for neighbouring communities for fear of being hit during reprisal attacks by those contending for the vacant stool. This is the reason why we are calling on government and law enforcement agencies to step into the matter in order to avoid a complete breakdown of law and order.”

Contacted, the spokesman of Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi said the suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID) for further investigation.

He said: ”There was a tussle for the position of Baale of the community involving two factions. One of those contending for the stool was cautioned by the police against imposing himself as the Baale but he ignored the warning. It was while he attempted to install himself as Baale that violence broke out during which one person was killed and others injured.

‘’However, some suspects including the man that was carrying out the unlawful coronation have been arrested and they are now in police custody, while the matter has been transferred to SCID.”

  • Peace returns as police flush out hoodlums from Lagos community

Peace returns as police flush out hoodlums from Lagos community

Relative peace has returned to Gberigbe Orelade, a sleepy community in Ijede Local Government Area in Ikorodu, Lagos, after men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force dislodged some hoodlums from the area.

The community had been enmeshed in a tussle over selection of new traditional ruler for over one decade.

It was learnt that the hoodlums had supported a faction of the contenders who forcibly over the leadership of the community.

It was also learnt that a recent court ruling had declared Orelade and Ladera family of Gberigbe Orelade as the ruling house entitled to produce the Baale of the community.

The intervention of the police, according to sources, followed the decision of the family to enforce the ruling delivered on March, 15, 2010, after several failed attempts to remove the usurpers.

A source said : ”The activities of the hoodlums reached its crescendo Tuesday as the Orelade family, whose turn it is to take over the rulership of the community after the death of former Oba Salaudeen Oyefusi of the Ladera family, took the bull by the horn, to confront the hijackers with the assistance of men of the Nigeria Police. The entrance of the men of the SARS into the community sent many of the hoodlums scampering for safety while a handful of arrests were made.”

Our correspondent gathered that a mild drama ensued when women, believed to be wives of the fleeing hoodlums stripped themselves in an attempt to evade arrest.

Although, the women could not be apprehended but four notorious hoodlums were arrested while a shrine belonging to their gang was demolished.

The police, it was learnt, also intercepted a cache of arms from the fleeing hoodlums.

A cross section of residents who spoke with our correspondent said there had been a reign of terror in the community due to the presence of the hoodlums.

A resident, Tunji Ajanaku said: “The hoodlums always commit crime and get away with it with the backing of a retired senior police officer. That is why they were able to sustain their activities since the rightful ruling family secured judgement against them in 2010. They have made enforcement of the verdict impossible and we were almost giving up before this hope came alive.”

  • Sergeant killed as hoodlums invade three petrol stations in Igando

A police Sergeant was allegedly killed and several others injured when hoodlums stormed a filling station in Igando on the outskirts of Lagos. The incident happened at Dapsey Petrol Station near Igando Police Station in the night of January 28.

The hoodlums also  attacked two other gas stations on the LASU-Iba that fateful day.

According to sources, the robbers, who were confronted by the late Sergeant Akor, fled the scene and abandoned their  Honda Accord saloon car when their  bullets did not penetrate the cop.

But  the late Sergeant reportedly pursued the robbers in order to recover a service rifle they seized from his colleague, a Corporal, after shooting him.

Among those injured, The Nation gathered, were a soldier, a young woman and two others.

It was gathered that when the robbers entered the station, they went after a soldier and a policeman who stood beside a petrol pump.

They were said to have attempted to crush the soldier and the policeman with their vehicle.

A witness, Francis Adeleke said: “But the soldier and the policeman immediately ran. They were hit on their legs and they fell. The soldier also sustained face injury. The policeman’s rifle was taken away and the robbers started shooting indiscriminately.

“Stray bullet hit a young woman and some others. There was confusion and apprehension. As this was going on, Akor, who had earlier left the filling station, returned and confronted the robbers.

“He was not armed but he ran towards the armed robbers and they opened fire on him but the bullets did not penetrate and the Sergeant was shouting ‘you no fit! You no fit!’.

“When the robbers noticed that their bullet wasn’t penetrating, they fled the station and took the police rifle they seized.  Akor pursued them to recover the police rifle but he never returned.”

It was gathered that  Akor’s body was found about 30 minutes later at O’Mark Bus Stop by the station manager, Tijani, who led some of his subordinates in search of the policeman.

The robbers, it was gathered, killed Akor with the service rifle that was seized from his colleague..

Akor’s body has been deposited in a morgue and   the robbers’ abandoned vehicle moved to the police station.

The injured  Corporal is in an undisclosed hospital.

According to the gas station owner, the late Sergeant’s bravery  prevented the robbers from invading his office.

He condemned the  Igando Division for allegedly not responding to the station’s    distress.

The command’s spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said it was untrue that the robbers attacked three filling stations.

He said: “Some armed robbers in a Honda Accord came into Dapsey Petrol Station, ostensibly to rob but the attempt was foiled by policemen on duty at the filling station.

“The armed robbers drove hurriedly out of the filling station when the attempt was foiled. The gallant policeman gave them a hot pursuit and in the process, they shot and killed him.

“A number of arrests has been made in respect of the incident and investigation is ongoing. It is not true that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO)  did not respond to the distress call. The DPO was alerted and he mobilised, alerted his men on the route possibly taken by the robbers.

  • One feared dead, others injured in hoodlums, customs clash

One feared dead, others injured in hoodlums, customs clash

At least one person has been feared dead, and multiple others severely injured during a fatal clash between Nigerian Customs Service officials and suspected hoodlum gangs.

Mojeed Olayiwola was allegedly shot when the Nigerian Customs Service officers attached to the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Ikeja trailed a bus perceived to be used for smuggling operations around Abule Egba.

It was gathered that the officers acted on intelligence received about the use of buses by criminals to smuggle into the country bags of rice from neighboring Republic of Benin.

The police source who identified the deceased said he was shot while inside a moving commercial bus by unidentified customs officers.

But authority in charge of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja debunked incidence of death, saying the fracas was between suspected smugglers of rice and the custom men who were performing enforcement duties.

It was also learnt that the driver who was afraid of his consignment being seized drove recklessly from Sango-Ota area of Ogun to Abule-Egba.

According to witnesses, the driver jumped out of the bus at anintersection at Abule-Egba, to get help from colleagues.

A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Femi Adurogba, who witnessed the incident said that the fleeing driver started calling for help from his members.

He said as soon as the group sighted the customs vehicle approaching, the smugglers, started hauling stones and other items at the customs men.

He said: “The custom men opened fire, but someone who was still inside the bus was hit by a bullet. This made the onlookers to charge after the approaching custom vehicles. The group wages war on the custom men, threatening to retaliate the death of one of their own. It was the timely arrival of policemen and soldiers attached to Ops Mesa to dis pass the hoodlums who were spoiling for war.”

A commercial bus driver, Chukwudi Emerole, alleged that what worsened the situation was an attempted by the hoodlums to prevent the custom men from go away with the vehicle.
According to him, the driver of the vehicle, in a bid to resist arrest, struggled t disarm one of the custom men.

He said: “One of them even dared the security men to shoot him as if they can. They were behaving as if bullet can not penetrate them.”

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident said that the deceased was inside a bus when he was allegedly shot at by a yet to be identified customs officer, stressing that the deceased was not one of the hoodlums who attacked the custom men.

But in a swift reaction, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) FOU Zone A, Ikeja, Jerry Attah, said that no one died as reported by some online media.

He said: ” The attention of the Controller Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, has been drawn to reports by some online media to the effect that some Officers of FOU Zone A, shot one unknown smuggler whose bus was conveying smuggled rice at Abule Egba Area of Lagos State. The report is the figment of the reporter’s imagination, which is capable of misleading the general public hence the need to state the true facts as follow:

” On the January 17, 2018, at about 5.30am, Operatives of the Federal Operations Unit acting on a tip-off traced one LT Bus Loaded with unspecified bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice from Sango Area and eventually stopped it at Abule Egba. Before he was finally halted at Abule Egba, the driver started shouting and making inciting comments that attracted mob action against the officers with different dangerous weapons such as broken bottles, stones and cutlasses. Obviously, he had driven to where he could get his associates to help attack the Customs Officers.

“Given support of the mob, he resisted lawful arrest and the other armed operatives fired shots in the air to disperse the raging mob but to no avail. As a responsible organization, the Officers retracted back to avoid any casualty. We appreciate and thank God that no life was lost as at the time of the confrontation even though two of our Officers sustained injuries. For the avoidance of doubt, the fact that a smuggler has evaded scrutiny either by following unapproved route or compromising any Officer does not guarantee that the smuggled item will not be seized anywhere it is found by patrol officers whose duty is to ensure compliance.”

  • Hoodlums attack Lulu-Briggs’ convoy

The Chairman of Monipulo Nigeria Limited, Chief Olu Benson LuLu-Briggs, was allegedly attacked in Rivers State, at the weekend.

Sources said about 100 hoodlums stormed the venue of a peace and reconciliation meeting, which is to be chaired by Lulu-Briggs, destroying vehicles, including his bullet-proof Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

    But no one was killed.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning at his Abonnema hometown in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area.

The sources said: “Some youths we do not know attempted to kill High Chief Lulu-Briggs when he came to Abonnema for a peace and reconciliation meeting. They destroyed cars in his convoy but he was rescued because his car is bullet proof; the hoodlums were shooting.

“We do not know what their annoyance is, but we know they were hired.”

They believe the incident may be connected with last week’s suspension of the Chairman, Abonnema Council of Chiefs,  Chief Gbobo Bob-Manuel, for alleged witchcraft.

Lulu-Briggs was appointed regent/chairman, Abonnema Traditional Rulers’ Council, pending resolution of the matter.

Lulu-Briggs was said to have visited the place for a reconciliation meeting between chiefs, opinion leaders and elders.

The hoodlums, suspected to be hired by unknown persons, took over the venue immediately Lulu-Briggs arrived, throwing stones and brandishing weapons.

Shortly after the incident, however, Chief Lulu-Briggs addressed the people, saying violence and killing would neither resolve the situation  nor develop the area.

He spoke through Chief Ibim Iyibo Young-Briggs, noting that there is need to reconcile all factions.

Lulu-Briggs lamented poor infrastructural development in the area.

I want to call for dialogue  to resolve misunderstanding, acrimonies and grievances so that Abonnema will be restored to its characteristics acclamation of ‘York City’.”

  • Police recover N20m drugs from hoodlums

Police recover N20m drugs from hoodlums

The police in Lagos have arrested 60 persons and recovered drugs (Marijuana, Codeine and others) worth N20million during an early morning raid in Itire in Mushin.

The raid followed a fight, which broke out on Sunday at Idi-Araba between street gangs over a girl. Over 150 vehicles were allegedly vandalised during the fracas.

But Acting Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal told reporters that only five vehicles were vandalised, adding that the hoodlums engaged in the fight after consuming illicit drugs.

Edgal said although five suspects were apprehended, the command raided the neighbourhood following intelligence that such fights were  triggered by drugs.

He said: “You will recall that there was this very sensational and alarming report that there was a fight somewhere between Itire and Idi-Araba and 150 vehicles were vandalised. That got my attention and I called the Area Commander and got those residing in that location.

“They came to my office. Having interviewed them, I discovered that indeed there was a fight by some youths over a girlfriend. They confirmed to me that five vehicles were vandalised and the photographs were brought.

“As a result of that, I ordered an overnight raid in the general area. In partnership with the residents, I got relevant information that most of these youths that fight are emboldened by the intake of hard drugs such as Marijuana, Codeine and other narcotics.

“My raid didn’t only target the hoodlums. It also targeted dealers of hard drugs. We had well over 60 persons, both male and female arrested and we had various drugs worth over N20 million by their street value.”

Edgal, who was at the Area E Command,  Amuwo-Odofin for town hall meeting also decried the spate of minors in cultism, noting that steps were on to contain the trend.

He said: “Like I said earlier, cultism is a social problem that can only be solved through partnership. That is why I am reaching out to all stakeholders in these town hall meetings to fashion out long term solutions to cultism especially those involving minors. The problem has been there for so long and I do not think we can only use force to solve it. Arresting and charging them to court witho ut the structure for rehabilitation would not work.

“That is why I haven’t stopped at partnership with the local communities. I am also trying to involve relevant agencies of government in finding solutions. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Social Affairs was in my office recently and this issue was discussed.

“At the end of the day, we intend to achieve social cohesion in communities such that it is no longer a norm for youths to be involved in gangsterism and cultism. So, we are using the carrot and stick approach to handle this.”

On the menace of motorcyclists, Edgal said a joint security patrol would be conducted this month to rid the state of motorcyclists that ply prohibited areas as well as criminals who use motorcycle as means of transportation. He challenged the unions to ensure that unregistered motorcycles do not operate in their domain.

Assuring residents that there was improved vigilance on the waterways to keep armed robbers, kidnappers away, Edgal said empowered Marine Police operatives and personnel of the Nigerian Navy (NN) were daily patrolling Festac waters and those connecting it.

He urged school proprietors to ensure minimum security standard by emplacing perimeter fencing, gates, guards, observation posts and flashlights. He also admonished them to ensure there were no surrounding bushes around their premises, adding that police patrol team would henceforth, sign notebooks that would be provided by the Area Commands to all schools in the state.

  • Hoodlums on the prowl

    Hoodlums on the prowl

In the dark hours, under the bridges and in bushy neighbourhoods, hooligans are unleashing terror on residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), GBENGA OMOKHUNU reports

There is a growing network of bridges in the federal capital city. But so also is there an increasing army of hoodlums lurking under them and bringing misery to their victims. They rob and inflict injury on their preys.

The bridges are everywhere. Many are in use, some under construction. You see them along the ever-busy six-lane Apo-Maitama Expressway, Area One and Zone Seven intersections, and also at Abuja- Kubwa-Kaduna Expressway. There are some more bridges at Gwarimpa Junction linking residents of Dawaki in Buari Area Council, and, of course, elsewhere.

Bridges are good. They ease transportation. But findings have revealed that most of the bridges have become death zones, especially at night. Several attacks have been recorded around some of these bridges, helped by the fact that they are poorly or in bushy areas.

One of such attacks occurred last Monday when an Assistant Business Editor with The Guardian newspaper, Mathias Okwe was robbed by some hoodlums at the popular Apo Bridge at about 11pm.

Mr. Okwe, who narrated his ordeal to Abuja Review after he was discharged from the hospital, thanked God for saving his life.

He said, “Abuja is dark and it has become very dangerous to move around particularly at night. I just pulled by the road to urinate around 11pm at the popular Apo Bridge. I was coming from the Legislative Quarters where I went to see someone. From nowhere some hoodlums attacked me. I did not see them as they approached.

“When I got to the hospital that night I was told that there was no week that such incident didn’t happen. The nurses said people are usually rushed in with different cuts on their body. The police officers at the Garki police station where I reported the incident are also aware of the sad development and they confirmed it. They said it is always a recurring decimal.             “The prosecutor at the station also told me that when they take those boys to court [some people] will go and free them and the hoodlums will find their way back to the streets. That fateful day, I was in company of two other men including my little child in the car. I thank God that I was not injured too badly. So I drove myself to the hospital. I am still receiving treatment at home.

“My advice to people is that they should be wary of the bridges because from the look of things all of them are not safe. They should avoid the bridges at night. They made away with my phones, laptop and other valuables.”

Investigation by Abuja Review also shows that some girls have been raped in that area when they appeared unwilling to let go off their valuables. But almost always the targets of the hoodlums are mobile phones and wristwatches. One could imagine that Abuja, being the seat of power, is well policed to prevent crimes, but that is not the case at present. The city, like many other cities in the country, has its black places. Do not drive to some places in the FCT with your car window glass wound down even if the car is not air conditioned. The places include the junction linking NNPC Towers in Central Area, National Mosque and Zone Four.

Investigations showed that many women motorists have lost their handbags and other valuables to common thieves and hoodlums there. Many policemen out on night duty, many residents alleged, disappear from their duty posts any time after 10pm, making it easy for hoodlums to operate. Indeed, the policemen come out later, but they hardly meet emergency situations. If Abuja can be prone to insecurity on the bridges, especially at night, what then happens to other cities in the country? It is compelling to build bridges with electricity components, such that the streetlights would be on throughout the night to curb the activities of hoodlums.

A resident who spoke to Abuja Review, Abdul Musa said he has been robbed twice on the dark pedestrian bridge close to Area 3 Junction, adding, “On that fateful evening when I closed from work, I rushed to Area 3 to board a bus to Nyanya but due to the volume of cars that ply that expressway I decided to use the pedestrian bridge, but as I climbed the bridge in that dark hour, I saw some young men positioned on top of the bridge. They beckoned on me to come close and cooperate with them.

“When I got there, they quietly cornered me one side and dispossessed me of my handbag containing my phone, N40,000, debit cards, identity card and my international passport. It looked like a drama to me, until a few minutes later when it dawned on me that the whole game was real.”

Abuja Review investigation revealed that the aforementioned cases are just few out of the many being recorded everyday across the Abuja metropolis and other satellite towns. The investigation also revealed that personal belongings of the residents of the Abuja worth millions of Naira are lost on a daily basis on the account of the actions of these people.

Worried by the level of losses, the victims requested that the police and other security officials be positioned at these dark pedestrian bridges at night to guarantee the security of the pedestrians. They also advised that hawkers who occasionally occupy the bridges be sent packing.

Abuja Review spoke with the Acting Secretary Transport Secretariat, Alhaji Abdulhamid Suleiman who said efforts were being made to convert all traffic light signals to solar power.

Suleiman said government efforts are being thwarted by the vandals and hit-and-run drivers.

He said, “We are not resting on our oars. We are collaborating with all relevant law enforcement agencies to track down these criminals and bring them to justice.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Anjuguri Manzah, in a telephone conversation with Abuja Review, said the police are always on the trail of the hoodlums and have not been resting on their oars in bringing them to justice on a daily basis when they are caught.

Manzah said the police are always on patrol even without information from anybody, adding that it is not true that they let the hoodlums go after interrogation.

He advised car owners to be curious while on the road and always wind up and lock their vehicles either in or out of the car.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Muhammad Bello recently at a public function advised Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to properly install streetlights at strategic points in Abuja.
