Few individuals have left a legacy as profound and far-reaching as the Late Captain Hosa Okunbo: a man of extraordinary vision, unyielding determination, and boundless generosity.

Captain Hosa Okunbo was a true polymath, excelling as a business magnate, investor, philanthropist, and trained commercial pilot. His remarkable journey through life was marked by significant contributions across multiple sectors, leaving an indelible mark on the nation and beyond.

Born into a humble family, Captain Okunbo’s early life was characterized by an insatiable curiosity and a relentless drive to achieve greatness. These traits led him to the skies, where he trained and served as a commercial pilot, mastering the art of aviation.

However, his ambitions extended far beyond the cockpit. Captain Okunbo’s entrepreneurial spirit soon propelled him into the business world, where he would go on to establish an empire that spanned the agro-allied, petroleum, telecommunications, power, real estate, and banking industries. One of his earliest ventures was the establishment of Hoslyn Ventures Nigeria Ltd., a company involved in the procurement sector of the Nigerian petroleum industry.

This marked the beginning of a series of successful enterprises that would define his illustrious career. As a visionary leader, Captain Okunbo understood the importance of diversification, and this strategic approach was evident in his extensive portfolio of business interests.

Captain Okunbo was the founder and chairman of several prominent Nigerian companies, each contributing significantly to the nation’s economic development. One of the most notable was CMES-OMS Petroleum Development Company (CPDC), which, in September 2019, secured an $875.75 million alternative financing deal for the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) operated OML 65.

This monumental achievement underscored his ability to navigate complex financial landscapes and foster partnerships that drove growth and innovation.

In the hospitality sector, Captain Okunbo’s vision materialized through The Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments in Abuja, a luxurious establishment that set new standards in the industry. His commitment to excellence and attention to detail ensured that the hotel became a beacon of hospitality, attracting guests from around the world and contributing to Nigeria’s tourism industry.

Agriculture was another area where Captain Okunbo made a significant impact. In March 2016, he unveiled Wells San-Carlos Agro Farms Ltd., a $750 million, 9,000-hectare farm designed to create 85,000 jobs in Edo State. This ambitious project not only addressed food security concerns but also provided employment opportunities, empowering local communities and fostering economic development.

Security was another critical sector where Captain Okunbo’s influence was felt. Ocean Marine Security Ltd., an offshore asset-protection company he founded, rendered invaluable services to major oil companies in Nigeria, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The company’s completion of the 46-kilometre Escravos–Warri Crude Pipeline was a testament to his commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s vital infrastructure and ensuring the stability of its energy sector.

Captain Okunbo’s entrepreneurial ventures also extended to the maritime industry. Ocean Marine Solutions Tankers Ltd., under his leadership, became the proud owner of Nigeria’s first marine tankers, demonstrating his foresight in enhancing the nation’s maritime capabilities. Additionally, his involvement with Westminster Security Solutions Nigeria Ltd., a franchise of Westminster Group Plc UK, highlighted his dedication to enhancing security measures across the country.

Furthermore, Captain Okunbo served as a member of the Board of Directors of NatCom Development and Investment Ltd., the holding company of Nigerian telecommunications giant NTEL. His contributions to the telecommunications industry were pivotal in driving connectivity and technological advancement across the nation.

Captain Okunbo’s philanthropic endeavors were as impressive as his business achievements. His philanthropic efforts spanned education, healthcare, and community development, touching countless lives and creating a lasting impact.

In remembrance of Captain Hosa Okunbo, we celebrate not only his numerous accomplishments but also the values he embodied. Today we honor the memory of Captain Hosa Okunbo, as we recall the profound impact one individual can have on a nation and its people. His contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth, social development, and global standing are immeasurable, and his spirit of innovation and generosity will continue to inspire for years to come.

Captain Hosa Okunbo’s journey may have ended, but his legacy lives on, woven into the fabric of Nigeria’s progress and prosperity. His life was a beacon of hope, a testament to the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to dream and strive for greatness.

  • Protesters block Delta govt. house gates over hijack of jobs

Regular official activities at the Delta state Government House in Asaba were held to a standstill for close to one hour on Thursday when protesting youths and ex-agitators blocked the only access in protest of an alleged hijack of their surveillance jobs.
The protesters, under the aegis of OML 30 communities youths and ex-agitators from the first to the third phase of the federal government’s amnesty programme, who stormed the governor’s office in tens of buses from various Urhobo, Isoko, Ijaw and Itsekiri communities, accused business tycoon, Captain Hosa Okunbo and his company, Ocean Marine, of scheming to hijack the the surveillance contract of OML 30 facilities and render thousands of them jobless.
However, the state government, represented by the Attorney-General of the state and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Peter Mrakpor, affirmed to the angry protesters that the agreement with the operator of the facilities was that the communities handle the surveillance and security of the facilities, adding that the government would not let that agreement fail.
Expressing the displeasure of the protesters to the state government, from a position paper which was later handed over to the Attorney-General, spokesman of the youths and ex-agitators, Mr Lord Tennyson, said thousands of youths of the state were about to lose their jobs to the alleged hijack, noting also that if not prevented, the security situation in their areas might be adversely affected.
He also charged the state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, to investigate the process attending to the alleged hijack, alleging also that the the contract value had been inflated more than five times the actual price, saying , “we have learnt from very reliable sources that the intent of Captain Okunbo, his company; Ocean Marine and his presidency backers is to use the surveillance job as a mere front to siphon millions of dollars for the purposes of executing the 2019 elections in Delta state and rig their party, the APC to power in the state.

“To achieve this, we gathered that the corrupt gang in the presidency has corruptly and unilaterally awarded the surveillance contract to Ocean Marine at a rate almost five to six times of the contract award rate of the previous contractor company.
“Your Excellency, we feel that this is the point at which you, as the Chief Security Officer of our dear state, must rise up to take steps to nip this madness in the bud to avert the impending danger that this greedy set of ‘soldiers of fortune’ is about to impose on not just our communities, but also our dear state.
“You may wonder how this is our concern. It has become our concern because we have sat down to imagine what the picture will look like when Ocean Marine successfully takes our jobs away from us, using either traditional rulers or president-generals of communities as fronts, how many youths with bustling capacities and abilities will be rendered jobless. We imagine what other uses can hitherto busy, but now idle youths can engage their abilities and capabilities in.
“We are imagining the level of confrontations and conflicts we might start to have to witness and how much work the security agencies might have to be dealing with by the time these thousands of jobless, able-bodied youths start engaging those they will inevitably blame for their new unpleasant status and how much more chaos the state government might have to be grappling with, having to add the problem of restive youths from an area that had hitherto maintained its peaceful calm all along. Your Excellency, we hope you know these might eventually be the least of the problems you may expect to come out of the 111 communities under OML 30”, he said.
Responding to the presentation of the protesters, the Attorney-General, Mr Mrakpor, recalled that the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU) between the operators of the OML 30 facilities, Heritage Energy Oil Services Limited (HEOSL) and the communities had just been recently, after a whole year of processing, noting that the agreement was that surveillance of facilities will be the job of Deltans and had rejected any involvement of non-Delta personnel or companies.
He, however assured that he would take the matter to the governor the moment he returns to Asaba, adding “I can assure you that you will not be disappointed”.

  • OMS clears air on crude oil transportation contract

OMS clears air on crude oil transportation contract

PPP Fluid Mechanics Ltd, a company that was later acquired by Ocean Marine Security Limited through share purchase agreement, has debunked the claims making its rounds on Social Media that it secure the contract without due process.

Contrary to reports trending in the social media, OMS noted that it secured the contract for the transportation of crude oil by marine vessels from Escravos Terminal to Warri Refinery through an open international competitive bidding in which 13 other companies participated.

This is according to a press statement made available to journalists, after OMS, an offshore assets protection company, promoted by corporate titans, Tunde Ayeni and Hosa Okunbo, had come under media searchlight in respect of the crude oil transportation by marine vessels contract which it executed for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC), in recent past, with two online publications grossly misrepresenting the terms of the contract.

For instance, while the reports claimed that the contract was awarded at the cost of $15.4 per barrel, the company disclosed that the contract cost never exceeded $5.68 per barrel while it lasted, and that was inclusive of the provision of dedicated security posts in addition to the transportation of crude oil to the refineries.

The statement reads: “If only the journalists who did these stories had been a bit more painstaking and cross-checked their facts with NNPC, they would not have come up with this inaccurate and false report,” adding that OMS delivered a total of 65, 597, 698 barrels of crude oil to refineries between 2011 and 2015, the exact figure that was made available at the drilling terminals.

“Such media claim that OMS delivered less than what it received from drilling terminals is an embarrassing demonstration of ignorance by the section of the media that came up with the report. NNPC has its records of what each vessel loaded and discharged. In any case, if that was true, wouldn’t the present government have summoned the company to come and account for the alleged shortage?”

“In any case, if that was true, wouldn’t the present government have summoned the company to come and account for the alleged shortage?”

Contrary to the false claim in the reports that crude oil transportation through the pipeline was deliberately circumvented to yield way to transportation by marine vessels, the facts on the ground indicated that if NNPC did not resort to the vessel option at the time, the refineries would have shut down completely owing to non-supply of crude oil.

Before NNPC embarked on the marine vessels option of transporting crude oil, a report commissioned by the corporation indicated that it was no longer economical to transport crude oil from Escravos to Warri Refinery through the pipeline as a result of unsustainable expenditure of about $121million for the maintenance and repairs of the Escravos-Warri broken crude oil pipeline. Even at that, this huge expenditure became a regular one which still did not solve the problems associated with transporting crude oil to the refineries through pipelines.

The report further indicated an estimated 40-60 percent loss of crude oil pumped through the Escravos-Warri pipelines owing to ceaseless pipeline vandalisation and oil theft.

Another indisputable fact is that before the engagement of PPPFM, the Warri and Kaduna refineries had been shut down for about 48 months owing to non-supply of crude oil feedstock to keep the refineries running.

OMS said: “It is important to state that with our company’s intervention, it is estimated that the nation has been saved over $2billion based on NNPC’s admittance of an average loss of about 40-60 percent of crude oil pumped through the Escravos-Warri pipeline due to vandalisation and crude oil theft.

This saving is definitely more if the analysis were to be based on the additional loss recorded while pumping crude oil through the Port-Harcourt-Bonny-Okrika pipeline.”

It must be stated for public records and without fear of contradiction that OMS is a projects solution providing corporate concern and not a trading company. For 30 years, we have offered value-driven services to our clients and we were never found wanting.

NNPC, as a performance driven corporation, has never found us wanting in delivering quality service and the records are there to attest to this.

We are not a trading company, we have never traded in one barrel of crude oil or one litre of product whether legally or illegally.

Even at the risk of sounding repetitive, therefore, OMS, wishes to state that we remain totally committed to transparency, efficiency and global best practices in all our ventures.

  • Hosa Okunbo’s explores new ground

Before the wind of change that ushered in President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC government, Hosa Okunbo was one of the top guys around former President Goodluck Jonathan. It was impossible for him to operate in the background because his deep pocket and high status naturally tossed him to the limelight.

This came as no surprise since it is hard to remain anonymous when you are sitting on a fortune in the range of millions of dollars. If your lifestyle does not betray you, your loyalists would. Still, one of his most attractive traits is his modesty. Okunbo is not one to toot his trumpet. For this reason, men discuss him animatedly and women drool in admiration.

Okunbo is in the news again but this time for a project he has just initiated. He has kicked off a $750 million farm project with an initial investment of $300 million targeted at creating 25,000 direct and 60,000 indirect jobs in Edo State. Unveiling the project in a presentation to Governor Adams Oshiomhole in Benin City, the state capital, he said it had been his dream to go into such a mega agricultural project.

Okunbo, who introduced his technical and financial partners from the San Carlos Group in Mexico, explained that the farm, located at Odighi and Odiguetue in Ovia North East Local Government Area, has already taken off with an $11 million investment on a 20-hectare Green House vegetables farm. The products are to be exported.

Hosa believes he has had the opportunity to conquer his profession as a pilot at the age of 30. He went into shipping and with over 60 vessels, he has conquered the sea. His new project is therefore an opportunity to conquer the land. According to the presentation, the farm is expected to produce cash and arable crops such as cocoa, pineapples, pawpaw and banana. Other products are livestock, including cattle, poultry and piggery, just as it will also engage in the production of tilapia  all targeted at export and meeting local protein and milk requirement.

The farm also has plan for an agro-industrial park and airstrip to evacuate products to Europe and elsewhere.
